Title: Is it me?
Post by: BalDrick on July 01, 2012, 04:13:17 PM
Or has this board got quite a bit quieter of late?

I'll admit, recently I haven't found it as good value as it has sometimes been and I've moved back to TIFF (which at times is still awful, but I just get on with work when that happens now). My personal opinion is this board can be too cliquey at times, with long discussions taking up a lot of room when people quote an entire piece then add a smiling face (or another equally annoying smiley/symbol; those really wind me up I'm afraid) or a +1, not exactly top level conversing is it? I'm not having a go I hasten to add, carry on adding smileys all you like, just saying I find it rather childish. Maybe that's the problem, maybe it's me, don't know.

It seems some highly respected posters don't seem to be on here much anymore, which is a real shame.

Am I alone in thinking this?

I think also I may have become a bit bored with discussing football.

Yeah there tends to be the same thread at the top of the main thread list for a long time, so I guess it is a little bit quiet.

Could it be that the sad news on Finn has taken the wind out of a lot of peoples sails, I know it has mine.

And you made the effort to publicly announce this in the forum because...?

Bottom line is Tiff isn't a shade on FOF. I'm not being bias but it's full of idiots and a playground for some of Fulham's special brigade. They know they can go there and get away with blue murder. You can't on FOF.

FOF always drops off about this time, it always does. I myself don't look in to much about this time because its silly season, people go on holiday, watch a bit cricket or generally have a break from football.

If Tiff's the place to be then please, don't let me stop you..

To be honest, I was feeling like this for quite a while before that. It's obviously sad that people on here have lost a friend - there are several things more important than football, but to be brutally honest, I'm getting sick of seeing the post about the poor guy's death at the top of the Show new replies to your post section. Which is not to say I wish people would shut up about it, just that it's symptomatic of how quiet things are.

Not in any way whatsoever denigrating the loss of a friend to people on here (I never met him, knowingly anyway, nor did I ever have a rapport on here with him), I'm sure it must be awful.

Maybe we are just footballed out.
A year ago yesterday our 11-12 season kicked off.
The season before we lost our manager after getting to a cup final.
This summer England have failed again.

As for TIFF I still read it but never post, too many wum. I wish it was not like that as I used to be on it all the time.
Its quiet here I think because its summer and we are not playing. Come Aug 18th it will all kick off again.

'And you made the effort to publicly announce this in the forum because...?'

Because I would hope from the tone of my post that I'm not saying 'I hate you all, especially your smileys' but instead wondering if anyone else has started to feel the same way. If all I wanted to say was the former, I wouldn't bother, I'd just go. Who knows, it's possible tomorrow (I guess more people look on here during work hours, at least in the close season, than over a summer weekend) there'll be lots of people saying 'yeah those smileys have got beyond a joke' and there'll be some kind of a cull. Doubt it, my point being I have liked this board and I'm not about to close my account, just wondering if others feel the same.

'Bottom line is Tiff isn't a shade on FOF. I'm not being bias but it's full of idiots and a playground for some of Fulham's special brigade. They know they can go there and get away with blue murder.'

I'm well aware of that, but actually there can also be decent discussions (just lost another wicket) on there, of which there have been a few recently.

It's probably just because of the time of year as Admin and MJG said. Once the next season kicks off, there'll be a lot more to talk about.

Surely the fact that we are out of season is a factor. Bound to be quieter. During the season there are bound to be far more posts / opinions around our manager, the players, our form, where we will end up, and so forth.

I'm sorry, but I'm watching this post and if it gets out of hand, I will close it down and consider issuing you with a cooling off period for provoking it.

Well I am genuinely sorry you see it that way, it is absolutely not the way it was intended, as you'll see from what I've said. If other people turn it into a witch hunt, I'm sorry but I ain't taking the rap for that - as it happens I have now finished working and won't be back online till tomorrow morning, some time between half 7 and 8 UK time. So whatever happens over the next 14 hours, it's not down to me.

Personally I feel that it gets a bit quieter because there are posters (of which I am one) who are wholly and blissfully ignorant of the career statistics of a player in France/Belgium/Wherever that I've never heard of.

I cannot join in discussions about which right back to buy when I've no idea who the player is that's being discussed. This is probably down to my age - I don't follow football avidly in other countries, or play video games, so would rather leave it to those that do. I suspect (cue sweeping generalisation) that these will be mainly the younger generation of posters, and it is evident that there are a sizeable number of us that don't fall into that category.

Given that premise, then I  will find at this time of year I am more interested in the posts about what people are reading, or holiday recommendations, or Peabody's upcoming operation, or best looking women over 40.

So, anyone been on a good holiday lately?

...I have noticed this only in the last four or five days to be honest, and I think there are various factors, which have been alluded to already, but they are worth pointing out for their relevance:-

1) Finnster's death has taken posters aback and his passing has left a void and a bit of a pall on here.
2) It is midway through the football summer break, yes there is football on the box, but it is not Fulham. This is much the same most years.
3) Fulham are keeping the transfer negotiations close to their collective chests and this creates a vacuum of information so little to discuss, apart from sheer speculation.
4) This time last year we were preparing for our European tour (Part II), with a new manager and there was plenty to discuss.
5) Some of the posters you mention may be on summer breaks/holidays themselves.

We have many more new members than last year and the sites popularity is increasing to grow,  when the season starts this board will come back to full life....

I'd have to agree with MJG, Ad's. I just saw it as an open question without an ulterior motive. I've found FOF the best of all the Fulham boards. A good mix of posters and a light touch when it comes to the administration of the board. The way Finns passing has been handled is a prime example of that.

Keep posting Baldrick. I find your points of view interesting  :54:

I think alot of people are doing outside stuff this time of the year, even with the wet weather, therefore are not indoors sat behind a computer. As has previously been said, over the last few summers Fulham FC have had a few issues plus football matches to sort out, so there was more for Fulham fans to discuss. I'm sure things will liven up soon enough

This board is the best Fulham discussion board around I reckon and I'm sure the recent downturn is just the usual summer lull. However, those in charge (moderators I believe they're called in modern-day speak) do seem to take themselves rather the seriously and tend to throw their toys out of the pram at the first sign of criticism. Am I banned now?

I have a look on here several times a day but don't really have a lot to say that's football related in the absence of games.

Transfer speculation fascinates but is mostly bollox. I'm looking forward to the friendly at Wycombe but that's a month away.

Complaining about lack of interest on here ought to put the onus on the complainer to say something interesting. Baldrick hasn't quite done that but he's prompted this not very interesting response.

It's the close season..  we can bang on about stupid transfer rumours till the cow comes home, but 99.9% of them are just not true. If the truth be known.. there isnt much to talk about.

Baldrick  im sorry you feel this way, ive looked on TIFF recently and i agree the standard seems to be on the up again..  and i hope it continues.  If you feel more comfortable posting on there..  fill your boots..  we just want a well run board. It's not a popularity compettion.

If anyone has any queries or questions or anything..  please pm me and ill do my best to help out.

If you fallen out of love with FOF  post on another board..  we honestly wont hold it against you..

We're all Fulham at the end of the day...

It is summer/ close season as others have said. Bound to be a bit quiet.  As an exile, I love some of the posts about other topics, pubs in Putney, Fulham and most recently, the post on cricket. For me, it is like having a chat/beer with a few mates I have never met but have quite a lot in common.

Quiet? yes. Boring? not.

If we sign Rhodes, can we get a Scottish flag please. Actually, didn't we sign a teenage Scot? Does that not count yet?

Can I just say that I really don't think anyone should be getting all defensive about Baldricks post. I really didn't see it as a personal dig at FOF, and he was at pains to make that clear. A simple question, which had been answered very well by several people, I think.

I read Tiff, but rarely post on there. I find it an easier format to read, especially on my Mobile, and I am sure there are plenty on here that do the same. But FOF is my true love, and I'm sure others feel similar.

I have decided to try a bit harder to generate new posts over the next few weeks to fill some gaps. So be prepared for lots more very average posts from me.  098.gif

It's the off season and no real transfer rumours are circulating (with the exception of made up ones that we have to take as gospel), so it's understandable.

I like to dip in and out, but I'm not especially part of the clique and wouldn't really consider anyone here a friend, so the majority of the posts during this time do descend into friendly banter and chat, which is fine, but it's not especially intersting to me; this will undoubtedly change however as soon as the transfer window hots up and the season starts!

i tried to start a cricket thread a few weeks ago and had zero replies. We then got a bit of a cricket thread going a couple of weeks ago, but it died out after a couple of days. That seems to be the way of it at the moment, it's off season, low volumes, and NFR threads seem to die out pretty quickly. It's the dead part of the year for football fans

I have to admit I don't post or read the board as much as I'd like, what with work and other football duties

But it's the only board that I do bother to read or post

So what if it's quiet, as others have said its the close season and I'm in the minority as I can't be bothered with idle transfere gossip as 99% of it is bullpoo

I'm more interested when we've actually signed a player and 8 times out of 10 it's a player no ones even mentioned

We all know Admin is I big girls drama queen  :hook:, but to be fair Admin and the other Mods keep this board very well run and do it in their own time without asking for payment, in fact I believe they even put their own money into this site

There is always going to be cliques as the more you post the more you get to know someone which a lot of the times turns to becoming more friendly with each other

Relax, enjoy the break and I'm sure once we sign players and the season starts, things will pick up...... So that will keep the mods on their toes.

Well without football on a football site we can all become a bit naval gazing.

Fact is FOF works very well. Politically correct mods stop us from blaming Blair f..........

So while we struggle to come to terms with Fulham without AJ. We may as well enjoy the twaddle that we may think is interesting or not interesting. We may not love everything but it is a bit like the best dressed poster. Appearing in gold lame dress clearly defines me as best dressed. But I may well appear on the worst dressed list as well.

FOF is the best around so it also attracts the worst.

''when people quote an entire piece then add a smiling face (or another equally annoying smiley/symbol; those really wind me up I'm afraid) or a +1, not exactly top level conversing is it?''

Baldrick, with respect I find the above line within your post a bit pompous.

Not all of us have time whilst at work to reply in detail to something that has we have obviously had time to sneak a quick read of and happen to think was a very good point.

Therefore a  plus one is a valid response given time constraints.

If you want something more highbrow, you aint gonna find it on TiFF  :011:

Other than that, I agree with a lot of people who don't view the original post as controversial. It was just another point that people could agree with or not, or ignore

Mrs. Berserker, I really like the smilies too. The blushing one is my favourite but I can definitely empathise with those who don't like them.

I like the blushing one with eyelashes,  :009: and the worried looking one  :001:, as I'm abit shy and also a bit worried alot of the time!

Congrats by the way on your 500

It is summer/ close season as others have said. Bound to be a bit quiet.  As an exile, I love some of the posts about other topics, pubs in Putney, Fulham and most recently, the post on cricket. For me, it is like having a chat/beer with a few mates I have never met but have quite a lot in common.

Quiet? yes. Boring? not.

If we sign Rhodes, can we get a Scottish flag please. Actually, didn't we sign a teenage Scot? Does that not count yet?

As I've said before, I'm not a big fan of the rule that doesn't allow arguements or "heated" discussion. But I certainly appreciate the fact that many of my favorite people from the old MB really hate the WUMs and the overly arguementative individuals and those that are just plain ignorant. I admit the Offal isn't perfect but when you get sick of it, it is very nice to have a place of refuge like this one. Long may my fof brothren and sisteren(?) continue to enjoy this well run site. I'm also very footballed out at the moment too so I haven't been on any sites all that much. It's not you(plural) its me. :54:

Sistren is actually the right word though it's very rarely used.

Get in the line mate, Costa Rica's flag comes first... although I'm not sure what do I have to do to include it, do I need to fill out a form? I'll do it! I mean I know Dembele has played well, Demps is an idol, and Kakaniclic, Brede, JA Riise, Kelly and Swarchzer (?) are all great players... but Bryan made two out of the best three goals of last season!! It has to be recognized in this forum somehow!!!

Hereby I formally demand the flag of the Republica Democratica de Costa Rica waving with the other flags!!!

PS, just be carefull not to confuse with Thailand flag...

Dear Baldrick,
I was wondering whether you added "The Bridge on the River Wye" to the old Welsh Hollywood film titles thread?  Or was that someone else?
Nogood "dammo mae'n dowel iawn, yn odie" Boyo
P.S.  Forget the Costa Rican flag - we don't even have a Welsh flag!

Apparently there is a 15 page application form and a £750 processing fee for a flag smiley to be made available.
