Fulham admit "impossible" to keep Dempsey as he edges towards Liverpool

Clint Dempsey has stepped up a gear in forcing Fulham to sell him to Liverpool by handing in a transfer request.

The American international striker has been left out of Fulham's squad to face Norwich in their opening Premier League fixture on Saturday.

Fulham boss Martin Jol admitted that the club would now listen to offers for Dempsey and sell for the right price.

He said, "If we get the right price for Clint we will sell him. If not, he will stay.

"I would like to keep him, but I think it's impossible. It's a sad and an almost embarrassing situation."

Dempsey has been part of intense speculation regarding a potential move to Liverpool this summer, with the club's owners accidentally releasing a statement suggesting he had been signed.

The 29-year-old striker scored 29 goals last season for the West London club and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers admitted earlier this summer he is a player Liverpool have been monitoring.

He said, "Clint is a player we've enquired about, it is as simple as that."

Hughton ready for Jol battle
Chris Hughton admits he owes a debt of gratitude to Fulham boss Martin Jol, but will go all out to beat his good friend at Craven Cottage.

Hughton worked alongside Jol during his spell in charge at Tottenham from 2004 to 2007, before then stepping up into managerial roles with Newcastle and Birmingham before Norwich came calling earlier this summer after Paul Lambert left for Aston Villa.

The 53-year-old has nothing but respect for Jol, who had spells at Hamburg and Ajax before coming back to the Premier League with Fulham in June 2011 after Mark Hughes' departure, guiding the west London club to ninth place.

However, that admiration will not stop Hughton aiming to get the Canaries off to a flying start and a first victory for his new club.

"I had three enjoyable years with Martin at Tottenham, working closely with him," said Hughton.

"He was very successful, having two fifth-place finishes.

"I have also learned a lot from him, so he has played a very good part in where I am in this moment.

"You pick up about what it is to be a good manager. Martin is on the training pitch every day, tactically he is very good.

"He is great with the players, has high demands off them and wants to play the game in an attractive manner.

"Martin is a winner and has been successful wherever he has been."

Hughton, though, will put that relationship to one side when kick off at the Cottage comes around.

"There are almost two sides to it, because I am a really good friend of his, but also a rival manager," he added.

"When it came out we were playing Fulham on the first day, of course it is something you have a laugh and a quick joke about.

"But just because he is a good friend of mine does not make any difference - we will want to win and do well in the game against them as much as we will in any other game."

With Lambert's departure, Norwich - who finished 12th last season following their promotion - have found themselves the pundits' favourites for the drop.

Hughton, though, will pay little attention to the doom mongers, having yesterday added former Manchester City left-back Javier Garrido to the club on a season-long loan from Lazio to supplement the summer arrivals of Steven Whittaker, Jacob Butterfield, Robert Snodgrass and Michael Turner into the Norfolk club.

"It is hard to avoid stuff, but everybody has their opinions. Maybe last season, everybody thought Norwich would struggle and that was not the case," said Hughton.

"If you end up taking everything on board which you read and you see, then you would be permanently depressed.

"The overriding thing is you have to want to accept what the challenge is, and hopefully come through it."

Hughton added: "If we have had a good season, then that will be the answer to all the questions.

"All you can do is what you think is right - for us, that is about improving the quality we have within the squad, and preparing ourselves right for every game, keeping everybody level-headed - that means making sure you do not get too carried away with a good result and perhaps even more importantly you do not get too down with a bad result, because there are going to be some.

"The players will go into the season knowing how tough it is going to be, but you hope you can put things together to get enough good results."

Dempsey destined to depart
Jol overlooks forward as he edges towards exit

Clint Dempsey: Looking to move on after entering the final year of his contract

Clint Dempsey has been left out of Fulham's squad to face Norwich and appears destined to be on his way out of Craven Cottage.

Cottagers boss Martin Jol believes a transfer saga which has dragged on all summer has got to the point of becoming 'embarrassing'.

Dempsey made it clear early on that he wanted to take on a new challenge, and Liverpool have admitted to holding an interest in the USA international.

No deal has been agreed for a man who still has 12 months left to run on his contract at Fulham, but Jol believes the highly-rated forward is not in the right frame of mind to start the new Premier League season.

He said: "Clint was not involved over the last four weeks so he is not going to be in the squad.

Impossible

"He is not committed to the club. He wants to leave.

"I would like to keep him, but I think it's impossible. It's a sad and an almost embarrassing situation."

Liverpool's decision to air their interest in public has frustrated Jol, with Brendan Rodgers' comments only serving to make a difficult situation harder for all concerned.

"That was very disappointing," said the Dutchman.

"There was never an offer. Clint himself told everyone he was going to Liverpool before he came back so we really thought there was quite a firm interest in him.

"Even (Rodgers) told everyone he was interested in Clint Dempsey, but our people never had an offer on the table, so it's almost embarrassing.

"If you have shown interest in a player, especially in England, you have to follow it up with an offer. They didn't."

Position

While accepting that Dempsey looks to be heading for pastures new, Jol insists Fulham will not allow the 29-year-old to leave for less than they feel he is worth - with the capital club still in a position to demand a fee.

"Maybe Liverpool will come back," Jol said.

"I can assure you that our chairman is strong enough. At first we didn't want to get rid of him, later on we had to change our position.

"But our view is that we won't let Clint Dempsey go on the cheap, that's for sure."

Martin Jol slams Liverpool over Clint Dempsey interest

London: Fulham manager Martin Jol has slammed Liverpool for unsettling Clint Dempsey after the American forward was left out of the Cottagers' squad for their Premier League opener against Norwich on Saturday.

Dempsey pulled out of Fulham's pre-season training camp in Switzerland earlier this month after Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers told his own club's website that he had made an inquiry about the player.

But the Anfield club have yet to follow up their interest with an official bid for Dempsey, who has one year left on his contract, and former Tottenham boss Jol has been infuriated by the Anfield club's behaviour.

"That was very disappointing," Jol said on Friday. "There was never an offer. Clint himself told everyone he was going to Liverpool so we really thought there was quite a firm interest in him.

"Even (Rodgers) told everyone he was interested in Clint Dempsey, but our people never had an offer on the table, so it's almost embarrassing.

"If you have shown interest in a player, especially in England, you have to follow it up with an offer. They didn't."

Now Jol admits the situation has left Dempsey unsettled and not in the right frame of mind to face Norwich at Craven Cottage this weekend.

"Clint was not involved over the last four weeks so he is not going to be in the squad. He is not committed to the club. He wants to leave," Jol said.

"I would like to keep him, but I think it's impossible. It's a sad and an almost embarrassing situation."

Dempsey, 29, has been training separately from his team-mates since Liverpool's interest emerged, but Jol insists the American, who scored 23 goals last season, will not be sold cheaply.

"Maybe Liverpool will come back," Jol said. "I can assure you that our chairman is strong enough. At first we didn't want to get rid of him, later on we had to change our position.

"But our view is that we won't let Clint Dempsey go on the cheap, that's for sure."

Season Preview 2012-13 – Fulham Interview

There's been quite a bit of change at Craven Cottage this summer. The midfield pairing of Murphy and Etuhu have both left to join Blackburn in the nPower Championship, whilst Clint Dempsey is also expected to depart before the end of the window after a fine season last time around. Forwards Andy Johnson and Pavel Pogrebnyak have also moved on, joining Queens Park Rangers and new-boys Reading respectively.

Martin Jol has introduced a new strikeforce of Hugo Rodallega and Mladen Petric to the club both on free transfers, with George Williams also joining from MK Dons on a free transfer. Sascha Riether has also joined on loan from FC Koln. After last season's 9th place finish it is hard to see how much further Fulham could go under the stewardship of Jol, but they may be hunting Europa League football once more.

We chatted to Fulham fan Russ Goldman (@Russ_Goldman) about what lies ahead for the club, and how he feels going into the new Premier League campaign.

How did last season measure up, compared to your expectations?

With a third new manager in three seasons, I was hoping for a top ten finish, and Fulham came in at ninth, so the season for me met my expectations.

What do you think of your club's summer transfer activity, are there more arrivals/exits on the horizon?

I think Fulham have brought in some nice players without really spending much money at all. I am still hoping that a midfielder and a striker will be added before the transfer window closes. I am also worried but hopeful that Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele are still in the team after the window is closed shut.

What would be a dream new season for you?

I would like Fulham to get up to seventh and maybe get into Europe with the Europa League. Fulham have the club now that should be contending for a Europa League spot each season.

What would be your worst nightmare?

I think ending 14th would be a major disappointment based on the talent Fulham still has at the club. I do not see a relegation battle on the horizon at all.

Who will be your most important player/s this season?

I would say it would have to be Moussa Dembele and Bryan Ruiz. Dembele was moved to centre midfield and flourished last season. If he can work on his finishing, he will be a complete player.

I expect a huge season from Bryan Ruiz, and I think you will see more than ten goals from him this season. I think you will also see him setting up goals for other teammates.

Any players you would happily see the back of?

There really isn't any player that I feel I would like to see leave Fulham.

Do you have the best manager for the job?

I think Martin Jol is reshaping Fulham for the future, and that is something that the last two managers were not focused on. He is bringing in younger talent and adding that to established players. Jol is the right manager to move Fulham forward.

Opposition players that you respect?

Stephane Sessegnon is a player I would love to see on Fulham as I think he is a great player. Nani is a player that I always fear and I think he is a wonderful talent.

Opposition players that you despise?

I despise the entire Manchester City team, because I feel most of those players are there for just the money. Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri are two players I do not like at all.

Best away fans in your league?

I think Liverpool has fans that always bring a great atmosphere when they come to Craven Cottage

Which teams do you really want to beat this season?

I want Fulham to end up ahead of Liverpool and Everton. Both clubs just got ahead of Fulham in the league last season.

Finally, where do you honestly think you will finish?

I think Fulham will finish seventh and will be back in the Europa League.

No Real approach for Dembele
Anonymous Premier League club fail in bid to sign Belgian

Moussa Dembele: The Belgium international enjoyed an excellent campaign in 2011/12

Real Madrid have yet to bid for Moussa Dembele and an unnamed Premier League club have failed in an offer for the Fulham star, manager Martin Jol has announced.

The Belgium international enjoyed an excellent campaign in 2011/12 and his agent earlier in August claimed Spanish champions Real had made an approach.

Jol insists that was not the case and has had stern words with Dembele's representative, Jan de Visser, regarding the issue.

Ahead of Saturday's Premier League opener against Norwich City at Craven Cottage, the Fulham boss said: "I spoke to his agent and I said to him it's not the cleverest thing to do, to speak about players.

"There was no offer on the table (from Madrid) and hopefully the situation will stay as it is. Hopefully Dembele will stay here."

Jol, however, did admit there had been one bid from an anonymous Premier League team for the player.

"There was one low bid from one Premier League club, very low," Jol said.

"Moussa is quite happy here. He wants to play here and if something happens, we will have to wait."

Jol Says Dempsey's Off, Rips Liverpool

Martin Jol has been forced to sell Clint Dempsey, and he's none too happy about how things have gone down.

Martin Jol added a new chapter to the Clint Dempsey saga this morning, and it's probably the penultimate one. He also tore into Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool for effectively brainwashing his star midfielder into wanting to leave, then not actually making an offer. Here is what the BBC has given us from Martin Jol himself:

"Clint was not involved over the last four weeks so he is not going to be in the squad [against Norwich]. He is not committed to the club. He wants to leave. I would like to keep him, but I think it's impossible. It's a sad and an almost embarrassing situation."

Then, he took it to Liverpool and their handling of the situation:

"That was very disappointing. There was never an offer. Clint himself told everyone he was going to Liverpool before he came back so we really thought there was quite a firm interest in him. Even Brendan [Rodgers] told everyone he was interested in Clint Dempsey, but our people never had an offer on the table, so it's almost embarrassing. If you have shown interest in a player, especially in England, you have to follow it up with an offer. They didn't."

Finally, he reassured Fulham fans it's not completely over at this point, there's still business to be done:

"I can assure you that our chairman is strong enough. At first we didn't want to get rid of him, later on we had to change our position. But our view is that we won't let Clint Dempsey go on the cheap, that's for sure."

Many have pointed out to me on Twitter, and I tend to agree, that Fulham still hold the cards in these negotiations. What is Clint going to do if no one ponies up what Fulham want for him? Sit out the whole first half? I guess stranger things have happened, but that'd be up there.

However, I can assure you that Jol and Rogers won't be doing business much in the future after this blows over. In fact, from the sound of things, it seems like Fulham may even have a case against Liverpool for unsettling Clint. Don't be shocked to see something in that department in the future.

UPDATE (12:00 PM EST): ESPN are reporting on Twitter that Clint Dempsey is refusing to play for Fulham...ever again.  In addition, Sky is reporting Fulham have fined Dempsey for refusing to play in this particular match.  We'll continue to monitor the situation.

UPDATE (12:55 PM EST): Now, according to the Liverpool Echo, LFC have no more interest in signing Clint Dempsey. If he refuses to play, where will he go? According to Jol's quotes he said Clint himself has said he was going to Liverpool. Not anymore, if this proves to be true. This is turning into a mess.

Blast from the Past

A real blast from the past now!

Does anyone remember a certain Shefki Kuqi?

His Fulham career, if I recall right, was far from magnificent and he was soon on his way. However, it transpires that he is still carving out a living in the professional game and has just put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal with the Scottish club - Hibernian.

It could be interesting to follow how he does in Scottish football, after all many an amateur hack has advertised the fact that their granny could score a hatful of goals in Scottish football!

N`Zonzi Deal on the Cards

Could Fulham and Blackburn be about to get involved in some more transfer business!

After amicably settling the deal that took Dickson Etuhu to Ewood Park, rumours suggest that Martin Jol is keen to bring the Blackburn midfielder Stephen N`Zonzi to Craven Cottage.

It would appear that N`Zonzi is surplus to requirements at the Lancashire club after falling out with Steve Kean and refusing to play for the club.

Our only concern is that Jol may need to get the deal done quick; especially with Blackburn touting that if Kean loses three game son the bounce he`ll be sacked, that could very well happen before the transfer window slams shut and who knows how a new manager might perceive the situation.

West Ham try to pinch Clint Dempsey ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool
West Ham are hopeful of beating Arsenal and Liverpool to the signature of Clint Dempsey, who is determined to leave Fulham before the start of the season according to manager Martin Jol.

Hammers boss Sam Allardyce is on the lookout for more new players in the final stages of the transfer window, despite already bringing in James Collins, Alou Diarra, Mohamed Diame, Modibo Maiga and goalkeepers Jussi Jaaskelainen, Stephen Henderson and Raphael Spiegel this summer.

The club are still keen to add a true marquee signing though, and after missing out on an £18million deal for Liverpool striker Andy Carroll they now hope to mix with the big boys to try and land Fulham forward Dempsey.

Dempsey, who scored 23 goals last season and has a year left on his contract, had looked on the verge of a move to Liverpool but the switch never materialised.

And the prospect of the American saying his goodbyes look increasingly likely, as Jol - who has left out of his squad for tomorrow's clash with Norwich - said: 'Clint was not involved over the last four weeks so he is not going to be in the squad.

'He is not committed to the club. He wants to leave. I would like to keep him, but I think it's impossible. It's a sad and an almost embarrassing situation.'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said last month that he had made an inquiry for Dempsey, and a website belonging to Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group published a story claiming he was a Liverpool player.

Jol admitted on Friday he had not been amused by Liverpool's actions.

'That was very disappointing. There was never an offer,' the Fulham manager claimed.

'Clint himself told everyone he was going to Liverpool before he came back so we really thought there was quite a firm interest in him.

'Even [Rodgers] told everyone he was interested in Clint Dempsey, but our people never had an offer on the table so it's almost embarrassing.'

Dempsey, 29, has been training separately from his team-mates this summer, and Jol added: 'I can assure you that our chairman is strong enough.

'At first we didn't want to get rid of him, later on we had to change our position.

'But our view is that we won't let Clint Dempsey go on the cheap, that's for sure.'

Jol hopeful on Hangeland
Fulham manager keen for defender to sign new deal

Brede Hangeland: Has one year remaining on his contract and Martin Jol hopes he will stay

Fulham manager Martin Jol is optimistic that Brede Hangeland will sign a new deal and extend his stay at Craven Cottage.

Jol has had to deal with speculation surrounding the futures of several of his key players this summer, with Clint Dempseyapparently destined to leave and Moussa Dembele also attracting interest.

Hangeland has just one year remaining on his current contract and his agent revealed earlier this week that he was 'not even close' to penning fresh terms.

Jol admits it is a tricky situation and he is keen for the Norwegian to put an end to the uncertainty.

Hangeland has been a commanding figure at the heart of Fulham's back four since being signed from FC Copenhagen by Roy Hodgson four years ago.

"It's not easy," said Jol. "Hopefully he will make a decision for us and if not we have to try to cope with the situation, but hopefully Brede will sign his new contract."

Fulham v Norwich City

Fulham will be without key man Clint Dempsey when they take on Norwich at Craven Cottage in their opening match of the Premier League season.

Dempsey has been continually linked with a move away from the club, with Liverpool understood to be leading the race for the forward's signature.

The American international had an outstanding 2011/12 season, scoring 17 goals in the league, but will not feature in his side's top-flight opener.

The Cottagers are likely to partner debutants Hugo Rodallega and Mladen Petric upfront, both of whom joined in the off-season and will be keen to prove to manager Martin Jol that they can bang in the goals in the absence of Dempsey.

Aaron Hughes is doubtful, but the medical staff will make a decision closer to kick-off. Simon Davies will miss out with a neck complaint, while Phillipe Senderos is sidelined with a knock picked up in pre-season training.

Norwich will be looking to consolidate their Premier League status this season but might suffer from the infamous second-season syndrome after losing their enigmatic manager Paul Lambert.

Former Newcastle boss Chris Hughton has taken the reins at Carrow Road and will have to make efficient use of the rather limited quality at his disposal.

New signings Robert Snodgrass and Michael Turner will add some of this quality to the Canaries squad and both are expected to make their debuts against Fulham.

However, Hughton's other new recruits Steven Whittaker (ankle) and Jacob Butterfield (knee) have been ruled out, while David Fox and Elliot Ward continue their recovery from long-term injuries.

Jol promised funds to bolster Fulham squad

MARTIN Jol insists he has fund available to strengthen his Fulham squad – even if Clint Dempsey remains at the club.

The American has told his manager he wants to quit Craven Cottage, but the Whites have received no firm bids for the wantaway forward despite interest from Liverpool.

Fulham have so far brought in frontmen Mladen Petric and Hugo Rodallega on free transfers, while Sascha Riether has arrived on a season-long loan from Cologne.

Jol still wants to add a midfielder and striker to his squad before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, and insists he's got money in the kitty to improve his options.

"Of course, we will get the money [to invest if we sell Clint], and even if he doesn't leave we will have the money to invest because we're a healthy club," said the Dutchman.

"It's about the right players. We were happy to get a player on loan, but we would like to have one or two [more] players because we've got the funds.

"They've got to be better than the players we've got."

Dempsey punished by Fulham
American hit with a fine for lack of commitment at Craven Cottage

ky Sports sources understand Clint Dempsey has been fined by Fulham for refusing to play for the Premier League club.

Craven Cottage boss Martin Jol on the eve of the new season has already confirmed the American is not committed and has not been involved with the squad for the past four weeks.

Dempsey is believed to be trying to force through a move to Liverpool and Jol is less than impressed, describing the situation as 'sad and almost embarrassing'.

The USA international has as a consequence been punished by Fulham in the form of a fine and it remains to be seen if he is still at the club beyond the 31st August transfer deadline day.

Jol had said ahead Saturday's first game of the season against Norwich City: "Clint was not involved over the last four weeks so he is not going to be in the squad.

"He is not committed to the club. He wants to leave.

"I would like to keep him but I think it's impossible. It's a sad and an almost embarrassing situation."

DARTS BORROW YOUNG FULHAM KEEPER
Blue Square Bet Premier new boys Dartford have signed goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli on a month`s loan from Barclays Premier Leaguers Fulham.

Marcus Bettinelli

The 20-year-old's path to date has certainly not been without set-backs, having spent considerable time on the sidelines as a result of injury.

But he has shown his character time and time again, with his desire to return stronger than ever, clearly evident.

In recent seasons he has worked closely alongside the likes of Mark Schwarzer and David Stockdale, who have both commended Bettinelli for his shot-stopping ability.

Brave off his line and when taking crosses, Bettinelli`s father Vic is Fulham's Academy goalkeeping coach.

Exclusive – Man United see 'very low' bid for Fulham star rejected

Manchester United have had a 'very low' bid for Moussa Dembele rejected by Fulham, talkSPORT can reveal.

Cottagers boss Martin Jol admitted on Friday that there had been no offers from Real Madrid, who are reportedly interested in the midfielder, but revealed there had been a derogatory proposition from a Premier League outfit.

And talkSPORT understands that the club who made the bid, which was less than £5million, was Man United, as Sir Alex Ferguson looks intent on strengthening his squad further after sealing the signing Robin van Persie.

But it seems it will take a much larger offer to prise the skilful schemer away from west London as his manager believes he is happy to continue his career with Fulham.

The Belgian midfielder, 25, has excelled at Craven Cottage since his arrival from AZ Alkmaar two seasons ago and he has attracted interest from several other top European clubs.

I want to spoil opening day for my good friend Martin, admits Hughton

Norwich manager Chris Hughton admits he owes a debt of gratitude to Fulham boss Martin Jol, but will go all out to beat his good friend at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Making their day: Chris Hughton signs autographs during training

'I had three enjoyable years with Martin at Tottenham, working closely with him,' said Hughton. 'He was very successful, having two fifth-place finishes.

'I have also learned a lot from him, so he has played a very good part in where I am in this moment.

'You pick up about what it is to be a good manager. Martin is on the training pitch every day, tactically he is very good.

'He is great with the players, has high demands off them and wants to play the game in an attractive manner.

'Martin is a winner and has been successful wherever he has been.'

Looking forward: Martin Jol at a pre-season friendly between his Fuilham side and Wycombe

Hughton, though, will put that relationship to one side when kick off at the Cottage comes around.

'There are almost two sides to it, because I am a really good friend of his, but also a rival manager,' he added.

'When it came out we were playing Fulham on the first day, of course it is something you have a laugh and a quick joke about.

'But just because he is a good friend of mine does not make any difference - we will want to win and do well in the game against them as much as we will in any other game.'

'It is hard to avoid stuff, but everybody has their opinions. Maybe last season, everybody thought Norwich would struggle and that was not the case,' said Hughton.

Eye for goal: Orlando Sa scores for Fulham against Norwich last season

'If you end up taking everything on board which you read and you see, then you would be permanently depressed.

'The overriding thing is you have to want to accept what the challenge is, and hopefully come through it.'

Hughton added: 'If we have had a good season, then that will be the answer to all the questions.

'All you can do is what you think is right - for us, that is about improving the quality we have within the squad, and preparing ourselves right for every game, keeping everybody level-headed - that means making sure you do not get too carried away with a good result and perhaps even more importantly you do not get too down with a bad result, because there are going to be some.

'The players will go into the season knowing how tough it is going to be, but you hope you can put things together to get enough good results.'

Fulham v Norwich City prediction: Clint Dempsey's absence major boost for Canaries

Certain things in football you can take as a given. Opening day games in Factor 15 temperatures is one. City's exits from Craven Cottage with little tangible reward for their efforts should not necessarily be another.

Despite the weight of evidence that suggests the opposite over the past 25 years whenever these two clubs meet by the Thames.

Fulham's quaint home holds ghoulish memories for the Canaries. That hoped for exorcism last season was effectively ended after barely a quarter of an hour when Clint Dempsey and Damien Duff punished a sluggish start from the visitors.

Dempsey's absence as a result of his contract impasse and stated desire to seek pastures new is a major boost for the green and yellow hordes. The American was a major influence in both Norwich games last season on his way to a 23-goal campaign. Nevertheless, Fulham remain a well-drilled, experienced Premier League outfit with an astute manager in Martin Jol.

Chris Hughton spoke during the build up how much he owes his former mentor. City's boss is an innovative thinker in his own right.

Norwich's friendly exercises this summer have been notable, in part, for a degree of innovation. Andrew Surman and Wes Hoolahan were paired for the earlier games; Robert Snodgrass deployed off Grant Holt for the last few outings. Now is the time to produce when it really matters.

Fulham 1, Norwich City 1

JOL VENTS ANGER AT LFC OVER CLINT, BUT REDS DROP INTEREST?

ACCORDING to Sky Sports, Clint Dempsey has been left out of Fulham's squad for their opening Premier League fixture against Norwich at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

The American has been a long-term target for Liverpool as they seek to re-shape under new manager Brendan Rodgers.

Dempsey, who scored 17 Premier League goals for the Cottagers last term, has made it clear to his current boss Martin Jol that he is determined to move to Anfield come what may and has been training alone since opting out of Fulham's pre-season tour of Switzerland.

Speaking to reporters, current Fulham boss Martin Jol stated:
"Clint was not involved over the last four weeks so he is not going to be in the squad. He is not committed to the club. He wants to leave.

"I would like to keep him, but I think it's impossible. It's a sad and an almost embarrassing situation."

Jol, who is resigned to losing the 29 year old forward, is upset that that Liverpool's interest has entered the public domain, without a firm offer having been tabled. Furthermore, the Dutchman insists that the club will not let him go for less than he is worth, despite the USA international being in the final year of his contract at Craven Cottage.

"That was very disappointing," he went on.

"There was never an offer. Clint himself told everyone he was going to Liverpool before he came back so we really thought there was quite a firm interest in him.

"Even [Rodgers] told everyone he was interested in Clint Dempsey, but our people never had an offer on the table, so it's almost embarrassing. If you have shown interest in a player, especially in England, you have to follow it up with an offer. They didn't."

Jol finished with a warning for Liverpool and any other potential suitors:
"I can assure you that our chairman is strong enough. At first we didn't want to get rid of him, later on we had to change our position.

"But our view is that we won't let Clint Dempsey go on the cheap, that's for sure."

Whether a deal is thrashed out between the two clubs remains to be seen. However, tonight's Liverpool Echo now claim that the Reds are no longer interested in signing the player.

Hughton reveals Jol respect
Friendship will make no difference on Saturday, says Norwich boss

Norwich manager Chris Hughton will put his friendship to one side when he takes on Martin Jol's Fulham on Saturday.

Hughton owes a debt of gratitude to Jol after working alongside the Dutchman when he was in charge of Tottenham between 2004 and 2007.

Jol went on to manage Hamburg and Ajax while Hughton had spells at Newcastle and Birmingham but the two will now face each other in the Premier League when the Canaries travel to Craven Cottage.

And the Norwich boss' admiration for his opposite number will not detract from the desire to get his team off to a flying start and a first victory for his new club.

"There are almost two sides to it, because I am a really good friend of his, but also a rival manager," said Hughton.

"When it came out we were playing Fulham on the first day, of course it is something you have a laugh and a quick joke about.

"But just because he is a good friend of mine does not make any difference - we will want to win and do well in the game against them as much as we will in any other game.

Enjoyable

"I had three enjoyable years with Martin at Tottenham, working closely with him.

Dempsey: The truth will come out soon over Fulham bust-up
Last season's top goalscorer has refuted claims by manager Martin Jol that he withdrew from Saturday's matchday squad to face Norwich City to push an exit from the club

Clint Dempsey says "the truth will come out soon" after it was revealed on Friday that he is attempting to force a move away from Fulham.

Manager Martin Jol told the media that last season's top goalscorer is keen to switch to a Champions League-chasing club and has subsequently withdrawn from Saturday's matchday squad to face Norwich City.

However, Dempsey has seemingly rejected these assertions via Twitter.

"There are two sides to the story," Dempsey wrote. "The truth will come out soon."

The 29-year-old's future has been up in the air ever since he pulled out of the club's pre-season tour of Switzerland last month, as exclusively revealed by Goal.com, in an attempt to force through his exit, with Liverpool long-term admirers of the player.

However, Jol confirmed at the same press conference that Brendan Rodgers' side never cemented their interest with a concrete offer - to the disappointment of Dempsey.

"There was never an offer," Jol told reporters. "Clint himself told everyone he was going to Liverpool before he came back, so we really thought there was quite a firm interest in him.

"Even [Rodgers] told everyone he was interested in Clint Dempsey, but our people never had an offer on the table, so it's almost embarrassing. If you have shown interest in a player, especially in England, you have to follow it up with an offer. They didn't."

"Maybe Liverpool will come back. I can assure you that our chairman is strong enough. At first we didn't want to get rid of him, later on we had to change our position - but our view is that we won't let Clint Dempsey go on the cheap, that's for sure.

"If we get the right price for Clint we will sell him. If not, he will stay. We want to keep him but it's impossible because he wants to go. Clint wants to go to a Champions League club."

Fulham's Tough Start

According to sportingintelligence, we have the sixth hardest starting schedule in the league for the first 7 matches. And it's not like today wasn't already a downer!

From Brian Sears:

Within an objective 'tough rating' system, the lower the rating, the harder the start. Liverpool have the lowest rating at 41, followed by Southampton at 44, while at the other end of the spectrum, Swansea's rating is 87, and West Ham's is 78.

***

To arrive at the 'tough rating', we simply added the finishing positions of last year's Premier League teams (1 to 17), and then rated Reading at 18 (automatic Championship promotion in first place), Southampton at 19 (second) and West Ham at 20 (play-offs).

I won't lift their chart, so be sure to go check it out. If you need reminding what our opening matches are: Norwich (home), United (away), West Ham (away), WBA (home), Wigan (away), City (home). That gives us a "tough rating" of 60, 1 better than Arsenal in 7th, and 6 less than Stoke and QPR who are both tied for 4th. But even with that data aside, our opening set is against two big guns, one bogey team, and two matches that could really go either way. Eesh.

If at first glance this season seems harder than last season, it is (although this season has one less game in their sample size). Last year we were tied with City for third easiest opening set. And we didn't win until the 7th game. But data and expectations can often deceive. Which is why last season I maintained that it's easier for anyone to play their equals at home and our unequals away. Playing your equals away is difficult; playing your unequals away is playing with house money: you lose, oh well; you win; GRAVY! and although their data proved otherwise, check this: our matches away to Wolves, Newcastle, and WBA that ended with just 1 point gained and 1 goal scored. These reverse fixtures saw 6 points (really should have been 9) and 11 goals scored.

Nonetheless, unless we are undefeated, today's Dempsey situation won't help our outlook come October. But it was probably going to be a dreary one anyway.
