Title: Please read - Anti Jol/Fulham FC Remarks
Post by: Admin on September 19, 2013, 12:33:16 PM
We appreciate that things are not particularly rosy right now, be it with Martin Jol, the team or just Fulham FC in general.

What I would like to remind members of, is that FOF still remains one of the most popular fans forums out there, and that our reputation is to be a friendly, welcoming website.

Of late, we've noticed an increase of anti-Jol/Fulham posts, naturally because of our performances, or simply because people have an opinion. That's fair enough, it's a forum at the end of the day, and people are entitled to their opinions. Something that I am personally big on.

However..

What we have also noticed, is a big increase in people hijacking other peoples 'general' posts with anti-Jol/Fulham material, or members mocking others about their opinions of Martin Jol/Fulham.

At the end of the day, you'll always get members who will be with or against something, or those who will simply sit on the fence. It's a forum and it will always be filled with opinions.

Because of this, we'd like members to naturally think before posting. Does a thread about removing the Michael Jackson statue really need turning into an anti Jol/Fulham thread? or does another member need mocking simply because he doesn't share the same opinion as yourself.

To keep the peace, and the general mood on FOF happy, all moderators will be reviewing posts and editing them accordingly if they feel something has been hijacked, or that another member has abused or mocked another about their opinion.

This isn't a big brother situation, but will be done in an aim to uphold FOF's reputation through this difficult period. I hope you all understand.

Regards,

Admin.

Well said.  That's an example of why this is now my number one Fulham forum.  :clap_hands:

Great move. Makes it easier to escape the bile when you know not every post is going to be hijacked.

Although I agree with your point, I would like to add whether editing without signifying is the right way to go about things? Perhaps send a message to the offender and explain why this may not be acceptable and maybe even ask how they would reword it. Some people sound aggressive of offensive when it's not intended that way.

It's just an opinion. Good work though, the board was starting to become tedious so perhaps this will sort things out a bit. Fair play.

good call - debate is healthy but doesn't mean I have to agree with you and I'd defend your right to disagree with you without getting personal or offensive. I'd hate this board to degenerate into some of it's predecessors where one word disagreed with some posters ensured a heap of vitriol came down on your head!

You will often find that most moderated comments are also accompanied by a PM to the poster from the Mod. In the case of obvious breaches like swearing, perhaps not.

If anyone feels hard done by, and they do not get a PM, then please use the report to Mod button, and ask why. All Mods are emailed the request so it should get picked up.

Agree with Frankie, if the Mods edit something without a reference how will we know when and where and whose posts are affected. The board isn't as good as its been in the past but as you say results haven't gone our way so the mood is dark. I think if the mods could somehow arrange for a win this Saturday things would be back to normal sooner rather than later.

A win on Saturday would clearly be despite Jol and not because of him.

This post is now nicely highjacked.

But does that actually matter?? (other than to the poster who, as has been said, will likely receive a PM from the MODS.)

Not at all, we're not "censoring" anyone. If you think that removing disruptive comments like "JOL OUT" from within perfectly good posts is censorship, then I think you may want to look the word up again and read a bit more about it. These type of comments are aimed at disrupting posts, or simply mocking the original poster about his/her opinion causing arguments. I'm big on members having opinions, in fact, I'm really big on it and want to encourage "healthy" discussions where at the moment, 9/10 post are being hijacked with some type anti-Jol vile.

D'you know what, I've been growing disillusioned with the online community as a whole lately.  When things go to pot there's always someone who crawls out and does nothing more than stir the pot for the sake of it.  They're basically kicking others when they're down, and then have the gall to get all pissy when someone tells them to do one (of course, that's all part of the act - draw others in and then act the innocent).  Quite what they get out of it, I don't know.  But it is a sad reflection on them.

As a result more interesting folks seem to be abandoning online discussions. Which is a shame as it means fewer interesting discussions for those of us that remain.

In short, I admire your intentions.  You've got to try.  But sadly the internet gives every bloody idiot a say, and there's always a surfeit of those

Spot on. i am all for pro vs anti Jol debates and respect both sides of that argument, although I think it is becoming rather stale, but there is absolutely no need to distort other threads in pathetic attempts continually reopen it.  If someone has a new angle on this well trodden debate then start a separate thread.

That is censoring...it is what happened in the East before 1989, mail was intercepted and doctored. the meaning of the word censor is to stop someone saying what they had originally written. Why worry if someones position is that they want Jol out? are you worried the club may not like it?

What a load of old Tosh Chamberlain. This is a message board that was brought to fruition by somebody who wanted mild little controls on what is said. So they had mods. That same chap, himself a fan who loses it from time to time, wants to make sure we all keep calm and not introduce the Jol out topic even on threads to do with Buttons and baking and sex slaves in the Slavic country.

Well the answer to that is - OK mate, fine with me, lets move on. If you live in FOF land you stick to the rules and pull a few legs. Censorship it is not. It is just saying 'you know that post on garden footware and grey coats. It shouldn't have Jol is a smellypoo half way down'  Let's keep the attacks down a bit because it becomes pointless and boring. A bit like Fulham with Jol in charge. Oh bugger.

I dont think admin is suggesting that moderators will replace a 'JOL OUT!!!' comment with 'VIVA JOL!!!'  The sentiment is more to keep 'Jol out' statements/rants to appropriate threads.

I personally hope they remove Jol tomorrow. You've obviously not been posting long enough to realize that I'm possibly Jol's biggest critic, I can't stand the guy. Unfortunately, I just tend to take a back seat these days with my opinions because when I do post, I'm usually targeted by other members who must see it as a power trip. Anyway, getting back to the point, we're not "censoring" anyone, it will work the same way if someone posts an anti-Jol thread and people decide to mock that poster as well.

For the avoidance of doubt, not at all.  For example, I don't agree with Admin's views on Jol nor the way he puts those views across.  But I don't have a pop at him for either of those things.  But there are those that do have a go at him (and others on both sides of the Jol fence) for apparently no other purpose than to agitate. Those are the people who I'm referring to as idiots

That is censoring...it is what happened in the East before 1989, mail was intercepted and doctored. the meaning of the word censor is to stop someone saying what they had originally written. Why worry if someones position is that they want Jol out? are you worried the club may not like it?

I dont think admin is suggesting that moderators will replace a 'JOL OUT!!!' comment with 'VIVA JOL!!!'  The sentiment is more to keep 'Jol out' statements/rants to appropriate threads.

At last, thank you akf.
I don't agree...but hey that's what freedom of speech is about

Not to be too harsh on just you but for those who feel the same. You don't get a guarantee of free speech on here. I routinely remove or edit posts with swear words or mocking behavior. Please read the rules posted above. This is a private club and we get to decide what's what for the good of the whole. If it bugs you, there are other forums where you can say whatever you want. We believe in civility, and when that is not adhered to an extent we believe is detrimental, we will let you know about it, and if need be, we will throw you out of the pub when deemed necessary. Not threatening at all. You're clearly not up on the rules, so I wanted you to be aware of what they are. You can choose on your own whether that works for you or not. It was your choice to throw out the "freedom of speech" plea, I am merely letting you know, you have limitations on here and you can say what you want as long as its civil and adheres to the rules. Thats pretty much how life is everywhere.

Here's the thing: censorship is a problem only if governments do it. When publications exempt certain content from what they publish, they are exercising editorial control NOT censorship.

Admin and the Mods [the name of my next band, dammit] have the function of maintaining the standards of editorial content. I don't have the slightest bit of a problem with that. This is a very well-regulated and transparent site. I have been on other sites where those who agree with "the establishment" can pretty much say anything they like without fear or response, while minority opinions are routinely challenged as "inappropriate."

I haven't seen that here ... and neither have you. This site is often several hundred yards from my cup of tea, but that's okay because I don't ever believe it was created specifically for me.

Thanks, Admin; thanks Mods.

The rest of you: move along; there's nothing to see here.

This isn't about censorship, because nobody is prevented from expressing their point of view.  This is about posters who become annoying by making the same point repeatedly, and hijacking thread after thread to make that point.  We heard you, now if you don't have anything new to say, please don't say it.

OK, let me put it plainly to you, as you obviously have some issue with Censorship and Freedom of Speech, and I don't think anyone is talking about altering what you say at all.

If a thread is a discussion/debate as to whether Jol should be sacked or whether he's doing a great job, then for you to post your thoughts on that subject, is welcomed, and the only 'censorship' would be if you used sear words, threatening or abusive language towards another member, or any other items that are specified in the guidelines for posting (http://www.friendsoffulham.com/forum/index.php?topic=24809.0 (http://www.friendsoffulham.com/forum/index.php?topic=24809.0)).

Now, if the thread was, say, about the Jackson statue being removed, then posting a comments concerning whether Jol should stay or go would not be within the accepted remit of the discussion, and therefore would be removed.

Therefore, freedom of speech is preserved by the fact that you can post anything pertinent to a discussion on the relevant thread, and if there is not a thread that deals with what you wish to say, you have the freedom of speech and from censorship to create your own thread.

It's really as simply as that.

If you don't like the limits placed on you for posting, that is accepted by all members when they sign up and are accepted as members, then you are on the wrong board, or you must have misread/misunderstood the rules concerning posting, either way, you have the freedom to choose to stay, or leave, your choice.

If you need any further clarification, you are welcome to contact any Mod via PM or Email, and one or more will be willing to discuss your issues with the FoF MB. There is always a but though, and here it is. If you wish to keep arguing the toss on this thread, then you might not be posting here much longer, that is not a threat, its a warning.

Can I make the scenario any clearer to you? If so, please PM me and let me know and I will try and spell it out a little better so you can be provided the service you deserve and need.

Thanks,

LM

I have to say this thread has been worth it. The Mods took a decision on what to do with regard to language and the hijacking of posts. Certain members raised opinions  (including me) about how that would work and now we have, in my opinion. An answer that explains how threads will be dealt with. Whilst preserving the rights of members to air their opinions in a manor that is respectful of the views of others. Whether or not the original post was clear enough or members didn't understand or wanted clarification of the thinking behind it. Debating the subject seems to have worked.

A lot of the hype from this post from admin could have been avoided if the title dropped the "Anti" , it gives the impression that it is the anti Jol people who are at fault, I know this is not Scott's intention as he has made his feelings quite clear regarding our manager.just a thought
