Was just thinking about players I have liked who have played for Fulham and simply wanted to make a topic, asking you guys, wich player have you liked the most playing for Fulham? You can name several as well:
To me who are 26 I never got to experience the time back when Haynes, Sir Bobby Robson or Langley where in the club I thought maybe I would name from the time I have been living and experiencing Fulham who I have liked the most
Nr 1: Brian McBride. In my time as Fulham fan, this is a man, a player I simply loved, a man who was a great footballer, a man with passion and gave it all!
Nr2: Louis Saha. Scored a heck of a lot of goals and alot of great ones, fantastic striker and I was sad when he left us.
Nr3: Edwin van der Saar, a great goalkeeper allso a man of passion and great saves!
Nr4: Clint Dempsey, fantastic player who knew where to be at the right times, and now hes back, didnt like the way he left, I am thinking hes overall time here!
Nr5: Jimmy Bullard, I instantly liked Jimmy when he came to us, great freekicker but allso a comedian and passionate man!
The list could go on, and is hard to pick and someone will probablu question the picking, but its a personal feeling :) Would like to see who other you mention though :)

oh yes that was a fantastic player, but wanted to ask a question, what has to be done to become a Legend for a club? he was at Fulham from 58/66 right? But isnt mentioned as aLegend on Fulham website, while Jimg Langley where at Fulham from 57/65 but is mentioned as a Legend.

Not sure what 'website' you're reading....but trust me, Graham Leggat is probably only one beneath J. Haynes when it comes to Fulham legends....GET A GRIP !!!!

I think, my friend, that to be included on the Fulham FC website as a 'Legend', you have to be dead.
Graham Leggat, although in his eightieth year, is happily still with us and living in retirement near Niagara falls in Canada, the country where he made a second career for himself as a tv presenter.
Sadly his son, also Graham, who achieved some fame as a filmmaker, died some years back - which may give rise to some confusion.
It would be nice if this wonderful player, who is now beginning to get the kind of recognition he deserves, could be invited, one day, to return to the Cottage.

Thanks for explanation, kinda thought he deserved to mentioned at least on the list, but now I know! :)
Some of my favorites, apart from the obvious, are Tony Macedo, Tosh Chamberlain, Gordon Davies, Graham Leggat, George Cohen, Alan Mullery, Steve Earl, John Mitchell & Roger Brown.
Apart from the Maestro, my hero as a schoolboy was Graham Leggatt and I can';t think of a better attacking player than him in the subsequent years. He had everything. He was fast, had wonderful ball control, two-footed, was as brave as they come, a terrific finisher and for his height was extremely good in the air. He could play on either wing on the inside or down the centre and was equally effective in each position. A wonderful player and a very pleasant, intelligent man.

What are you talking about ? GL was a Fulham legend full stop.......... read some FulhamFC history books. No offence.....just don't rely on everything you read on-line. Most of it is ill-informed and 'premier-centric' !
I am a 65 year old woman who was watching Graham Leggat score goals, create chances, and win us important games in the days of the black and whites when stands had no roofs, we sat on benches with our seat numbers painted in white , and smoke from cigarettes wafted across the pitch, mingled with the smell of hotdogs.......he was stunning ! Do more reseach.
...jms, K33NY is not from these shores, and like many new, or foreign, or both fans of the whites their main point of reference is the official website, they eventually come on here to be educated, not berated, let's make points without stabbing people - thanks...
As a recent fan of only around 8 years:
1 - Gera
2 - Murphy
3 - Davies
4 - Schwarzer
5 - Dempsey
6 - Dembele
EDIT - Nevland and Mcbride too

...no worries jms, I had the pleasure of speaking with Graham whilst campaigning for the Johnny Haynes statue, a very bright man and passionate - "Do it - do it" he said to me!
Although there are many books about Fulham few can afford them, and some need points of reference about which are the best books to try to buy when funds become available. There is also the issue that they may not know where to buy them as most have been written and published by the fans but the club refuses to sell them for reasons best known to themselves.
On FoF we have a section for the FFC bibliography, I hope to do a review on each book as I have over 40 books on our great club, in the meantime here is the link:-

The lionhearted Fred Callaghan

I kind of like watching blood and guts players.
Les Barrett
Alan Slough
John Mitchell
Fred Callaghan
Jimmy Conway
Rory hamill
Terry Angus
Simon Morgan
Brede
Dembele
Probably a lot more
Ones I dislike,
Mark Cooper
Berbatov

Do you allso have links for online stores I could buy them? This may sound strange, but back in my school days I even made reports about Fulham when we had topic free reports etc, but our libraries in Norway have so little about Fulham, since Fulham isnt so big here and I live on the country side its not just to take a buss or train to Oslo to go to bigger libraries etc, I would love to find some Fulham history books to order!

Now that's a list ! I liked from the Simon Morgan era... Julian Hails and I remember Paul Broker's debut against Swansea in the FA Cup, magic. Simon is about as close to a modern day Fulham legend as you can get.
Favourites though (players I have seen):
1. Van der Saar
2. Luis Saha
3. Moussa Dembele
4. STEEEEEEEEED
5. Alain Goma
6. Steve Finnan
7. Rufus
8. Martin Thomas (obviously)
9. Jim Stannard
10. Julian Hails
Manager: Tigana
Micky Conroy set the old Division 3 on fire in my first season as a supporter so I've got fond memories of him.
Also loved Paul Peschisolido from a few years later.
In the Premier League era, Vincenzo Montella was very entertaining but for consistency and impact, you can't really best VDS.
Started watching Fulham in 1959 and like many others on the message board my favourite was Graham Leggat. It's always great to see former players at The Cottage and it was a delight to see Tony Macedo. I've always hoped that Graham will appear on our pitch one day.
...K33NY, getting hold of books is a problem, nearly all the books about FFC are written by fans and published independently, usually by Ashwater Press. The club, as mentioned, don't stock these which is a disgrace as people like you are unable to learn about this clubs' history.
Because they are published independently they are usually limited 'runs' because of cost (which would not be the case if FFC bought loads) and as such the chances of re-prints are very unlikely.
The immediate option is to go to Ashwater Press - who ship all over the world - and see what they have left in stock - go to this link:-

Near the bottom of the page is what remains of their stock.

So many recent favourites as well. Danny Murphy, of course, Digger Davies, Gera and Steve Finnan and the great Edwin (our best-ever keeper surely) , but my biggest idol in recent years was Brian McBride. A terrific player, a true gentleman on the pitch and a real professional in the very best sense of the word. A sportsman fit for any youngster to look up to and attempt to emulate. A true legend.

Wow this is quite a shocker to be honest! I know Fulham is a club of great history, and are proud of it as well, but I would allso think that the owners/board through the history would be so as well, and take this knowledge to them to help new and old fans to get a valued history in writing and to enjoy! This may be a stupid question but has this topic ever been taken up by fans or even the writers with the club itself? (Wich it probably has been) And what did the club say when it was taken up? Surely they have to realise what a great history is written in these books, either its official or not!
...K33NY, it has been taken up with the club by these authors on numerous occassions, the club appear to feign interest and then pull out of deals.
The publications are still made even so, but with the club backing them and allowing them to use the club badge etc., they could have a larger book run, which would provide wider access to the fans of this sort of material. Because of their relative rarity, buying through Amazon and ebay can lead to some ridiculously high prices on books.
The club seem to prefer to limit books they sell from the season of it becoming a premier league side - almost as though the club didn't exist up to that point.
Maybe one day the club will change their attitude if there is an administative reshuffle...

Such a disapointment to read this. But I did order all 3 books featured on the website you showed me! Cant wait to read them now! :) Thank you alot!
Eddie Johnson.
No mention of Sean Davis. Personal fave of mine as that was the sort of time I started following. Boa's up there too.
Brian McBride
Chris Coleman
Steed Malbranque
Van Der Sar
Brede
Steed certainly goes on my list. So does Etuhu, Davies, McBride, Van Der Sar, a healthy Hangeland, Dempsey, Murphy, and about 10 more for sure. But not Bullard. No way.
Les Barrett, John Mitchell, Mullers, Saha, Tosh Chamberlain, Paul Went, Vic Halom, Simon Morgan. I don't much care for most of the modern prima donnas.
Obviously McBride, Murphy and Steed. I always liked Claus Jensen, Andy Cole and Carlos Bocanegra too.
And why on earth has nobody mentioned the awesomeness that is Moritz Volz. Great on the pitch, and phenomenal off the pitch. Somewhere out there is a Texan that will agree.

Sean Davis would be an excellent choice. 100% Fulham product.
I was amazed to find, however, when I looked it up, that Sean (140 + 10 sub) actually started fewer games for us than Bobby Moore (150).
Although he will always be an absolute hero to me, Moore is obviously somebody else's Legend. But what a shift he put in for us. After a slightly dodgy start he provided a continuous master class in how to defend. He also nursed and encouraged the younger players and controlled all our referees for almost three seasons. Knew how to enjoy himself, too.
Steeeed
(then McBride)
I have been supporting Fulham for about 42 years and my favourite is the great GORDON DAVIES
always played with a smile on his face and scored for fun
great entertainer
Has to be Brian McBride for me. On the pitch he was pure class. Off the pitch he is genuinely the nicest man in the world. Always has time for fans and anyone that wants to talk to him
I always liked players who had personality off the field so I'd go for (in no particular order) dirk lehmann bullard(judas) Simon Morgan horsefield and moussa!! Five great lads to go for a pint with I'd say!!!
Favorite players I have seen
1. Gordon Davies
2. Luis Saha
3. Moussa Dembele
4. STEEEEEEEEED
5. Boa Morte
6. Bobby Moore
7. Paul Parker
8. Brian McBride
9. Viv Busby
10. Peschisolido
But Ivor the Engine Gordon Davies would be by far and away my favorite. There are many who deserve a mention, Horsfield, Sean Davis, Dempsey, Rufus, Barry Hayles to think of just a few.
Haynes, Cohen, Mitchel, Clarke, Barrett, Conway, Mullery, Marsh, MacDonald, Ivor, McBride, Steed, Saha, Dembele
Viv Busby????gaawd funny though.
I'm a relative newcomer, so my favourites are guys from the recent era. My individual favourite player so far is Simon Davies. Clearly not the best they've had but a stylish, agile, hard working player. Good team man, too.
My first game being in 87, my favourite players as I grew up were Gary Barnett, Gary Brazil and Jim Stannard, then followed later on by Darren Freeman and Danny Cullip, moving on to the likes of Peschisolido, then Saha and Boa Morte, then Mcbride and VDS, now Hangeland and Parker....we have really been on some journey and are lucky to have so many favourites at all levels of the game in such a short space of time.
Leroy Rosenior, Justin Skinner, Jeff Eckhardt, Jim Stannard.
How did I forget Fred Callaghan? Shall never forget his goal at Charlton. Also Darren Freeman and Danny Cullip, left behind by the money era.

...jms, K33NY is not from these shores, and like many new, or foreign, or both fans of the whites their main point of reference is the official website, they eventually come on here to be educated, not berated, let's make points without stabbing people - thanks...
Well said.

...I was at the not so happy Valley to see Fred (Tank) Callaghan's goal at Charlton, I actually kept that programme, Fred's equalizer basically kept us up and consigned Charlton to the drop if I remember rightly. I was right at the top of the east terrace (if you never saw it - it was one of the highest terraces I have seen, bigger than Villa's old Holte end and Wolves). Big barney before the game at a local, smashed windows etc., and the coach got bricked after the game..!
My first favourite player was Allan Clarke, being a prolific goalscorer in a struggling team he seemed the right choice at the time. I did not really appreciate JH who was pulling all the strings during those mid sixties years, we just saw Clarkie turning after scoring with one arm in the air. Graham Leggatt was also an exceptional talent who we should of kept another season at least.
Why has not mentioned the legend that was Bedford Jezzard, or the one club players like Arthur Stevens or Joe Bacuzzi. Also Eddie Lowe and Tony Macedo and of course our only World Cup winner George Cohen. The list goes on.
For me there is only one Davies (both spellings) and that's Gordon 'Ivor' Davies. Never forget pretending to be him in the school playground scoring and then giving a David Coleman "Davies, 1-0".
Also have to mention Paul Parker, best right back I've seen play for us and we've had some decent ones over the years.
Graham Leggatt, Bobby Robson and Boa.
My top 5:
1. Ivor
2. Roger Brown
3. Sean Davis.
4. Louis Saha.
5. Brian McBride.
With apologies to Rufus, Boa, Steeeeeeeed, Dembele, Finan, Clarke, Parker, Pesch, VDS, Dixie, and all the others that have given me enjoyment down the years.

I was just to the side of the goal for the equaliser. When Fred came up (and he rarely did) I thought that if anyone were going to score it would be him.
If you still have the programme, the editorial says something like "Charlton's season isn't exciting this year as we're not in danger of relegation and not pushing for promotion" We were below them before that game but they went down and we stayed up.
when I was younger (im early 20's) i use to love saha then it was steed and mcbride later on it was dempsey& dembele and strangely enough AJ the first game i took the missus to he scored and with her choosing we bagged a big bet payout. shame he went to QParse I always excited when he ran through the lines and the worldies he scored in the europa

Luis Boa Morte was my hero growing up. Adopted the good and the bad from him as a left winger. Yet to bite someone though!

What this thread has demonstrated is that we have had some great players wear the black and white of our beloved team. Conversely there have been a few mentioned who I wouldn't select for my local pub team, but that is because they have been nominated by our newer supporters, and I am an old fart.
That being the case, in my view nobody compares with John Norman Haynes, followed by the other ten men he led for so long – Macedo, Cohen, Langley, Mullery, Bentley, Lowe, Stevens, Robson, Jezzard, and Chamberlain. Add to these Leggatt, Jim Taylor, Joe Bacuzzi and Gordon Davies and you have my squad of the century.
For sheer guts and determination and the bloke you would most wish to have at your side in the trenches - Fred Callaghan without any hesitation

Here's how big the east stand was...

... great shot of the East terrace Burt, but from the air the dimensions are a little lost. This is what the terrace looked like in it's hey-day:-

I LOVE that picture!
1.Alan Clarke
2.Les Barrett
3.Steed Malbranque
4.John Mitchell
5.Johnny Norman Haynes *****
Only two for me. Barry Hayles and Luis Boa Morte
Only a few (too few) appearances but it was obvious that Malcolm Macdonald had great talent, plus he did a job for us in management.
Paul Parker had great balance and touch.
Loved Morgs for his attitude and ability.
A little mentioned favourite of mine was Bjarne Goldbeak, would have loved to see him at Fulham earlier in his career.
Paul Peschi was a great game changer.
For too long we were a selling club and Sniffer was a prime example.
Where to stop, so many grteat players have passed through the club over the years.
