Title: Dan Burn to return to Birmingham after cup game
Post by: Zu-Meister on January 10, 2014, 10:37:58 PM
Fulham defender Dan Burn is poised to return to Birmingham City on loan next week.

The towering centre-back made 28 appearances for the Championship club earlier this season but had his loan spell at St Andrews cut short after being recalled by the Cottagers.

Burn played 90 minutes in last weekend's FA Cup draw with Norwich and will feature in Tuesday's replay before returning to Birmingham.

Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen said: "We were delighted with his performance against Norwich, which showed that his loan deal was working.

"There's some good guys there in Lee Clark and Steve Watson who I know really well.

"It's important at this stage of his career that he plays a lot of competitive games. We brought him back so we can have a look at him.

"We want to keep him here for the next cup game, then after that we'll most likely loan him back to Birmingham."

That is disappointing, but I trust Rene. I said before he returned that we can't put this kind of weight on his shoulders at this time of his development, then there was a feeling amongst those who had watched the cup game that he was ready but Rene obviously feels different.
We have to sign a centre back though, even if it's just on loan.

Position we need cover in but obviously something isn't quite right, probably the pressure of coming into a team that is fighting relegation, only Rene knows. Shame were going to be wondering 'what if' should we keep leaking 4 a game!

Disapointed to hear that, but hopefully hes performance at Birmingham, an the cup matches has been so good, that he becomes regular on first team next season?? :)

I can understand this. RM needs to keep some very experienced, international centre backs committed and motivated. Whatever people may think, we do have 4 Premiership standard centre backs on our books already.

Come the summer, I reckon Hughes will be off, with possibly Senderos as well. I am sure that RM has had a long chat with the lad and Burn will slip nicely back into the space created.

We are in a real pressure cooker of a situation putting all that pressure on a young players shoulders in a key position would be unfair, should he make a mistake that costs us the game could seriously hinder his development. With Hangeland about to return gives Rene time to make a considered decision whats best for dan and Fulham. Giving him the reward of playing in the return game will boost Dan, letting him know he has staked a claim and if he keeps it up will be in the mix next season. I'm sure Birmingham will benefit and see an even better Dan Burn on his return.

He will not have any better experience than playing in a relegation fight with Fulham. We ended up protecting a lad call Smalling until we made a huge profit. So I would prefer to play the lad than have our present defenders. Brede coming back is not too wonderful if his form wasn't all down to his injury. Still Rene does at least know what he is doing. Shame though.

With Brede back we have 4 center backs - Senderos, Amorebieta and Hughes so having Burn get splinters in his backside rather than playing each week makes no sense. As others have noted he is very similar to Hangeland, very tall but not the most mobile. He will get to play against Norwich in the replay though.

Burn will get his shot NeXT season.

We should sign one CD now and ship off Hughes and Sanderos this summer that would leave us with 4 CD incl. Burn For next season.

However would love to seen him making his breakthrough now, but another half season a Birmingham will only make him stronger.

:plus one:

Should we win the replay next Tuesday I would be inclined to keep Burn and play him at Sheffield Utd & then loan him back to Brum. He is now cup tied & they are probably going to get to the 4th round too

Also gives us time to assess whether Brede has fully recovered from his injury or not

Fully agree lets Rene make the decision about who what and when after all that's what he gets paid to do 049:gif

Is Hangeland coming back, he has been out for over 3 months. If he is due to return soon he will need time and games to get match fit and meanwhile we will limp along with Senderos, Lovebite and Hughes.

We need a new premiership proven central defender now.

Hangeland only resumed training two weeks ago... Got to make sure he is fully match-fit before pitching him back in.

Maybe Burn is returning to Birmingham as Rene is bringing another defensive player in, Hangeland is our skipper, Rene seems to rate Senderos & Amorebieta, we also have Hughes so if Senderos & Hangeland are back fully fit it makes sense for Burn to keep learning at Birmingham

How much longer does he have to learn? he played well against a prem team, what more can he do? he is more assured and talented than Senderos and adapted better straight a way than Love bite has. fp.gif

But a prem team with 8 changes - doubt that team would even hold its own in the Championship. So really not much of a test of Burn's ability.

didn't see that Norwich had 8 changes from their first team, Wolfswinkle and co played, sure you are not thinking us?

Wolfswinkel is the only one you can name because the rest of their team were certainly not the main 1st team.

Everyone who is declaring how great Dan Burn is, did you actually see him play versus Norwich or are you taking Gentleman's Jim word for it? Sending him back to Birmingham is for the best, he gets guaranteed 1st team game time which is what he needs at this age.

Him and Hangeland are very similar players in that they need a marker alongside them whilst they are allowed to go out and attack the ball. Playing them together wouldn't work which means he'd sit on the bench hence the loan back to Birmingham. My reckoning is that he'll be in the 1st team as of next season.

Yes I did go to Norwich and see him play  and get your facts right

No, we had 9. They made 8 changes (although their goal scorer whose name escapes me is a normal first team choice but was returning from injury and therefore counted a s a change). Burn did well and did all that was asked of him. Not his fault he was playing some 18 year olds. All I am saying is I'm not getting too excited on the basis of one match. Hopefully he will be regular next year, but not sure I would be happy if he was thrown in the deep end this year.

Rene needs to rethink this after watching today's repeat, pants performance from our back 4. Shocking.

Funny how people have changed their opinions on this since the full time whistle. It would have been a joke of a decision imo anyway

see above they had 8 first team players out there, hardly the reserves.

He won't play for Fulham this season after the cup game regardless of whether people think he is better. I'd rather he got first team games at Birmingham than sit on the bench here. I'm sure we will see a massive reshuffle in defence come the summer.

I'd keep him around until we get someone of real quality in, but if we do that send him out on loan so he can become a regular next season. This kind of pressure will only hinder him. Imagine if he makes mistakes and people get on his back? That kind of confidence shattering will be difficult to handle at such a young age.
