FA Cup match report: Sheffield United 1-1 Fulham
Hugo Rodallega spared Fulham's blushes as the Barclays Premier League strugglers narrowly averted a humbling FA Cup exit at the hands of 10-man Sheffield United.
Cottagers boss Rene Meulensteen made his priorities clear with 11 changes for the game but he would still have hoped for better than a laboured 1-1 draw against a side who are not yet safe in Sky Bet League One.
On a waterlogged Bramall Lane pitch that made life hard on all concerned, the Blades went ahead through Chris Porter's 31st-minute finish and looked likely to hold on even after Michael Doyle's needless red card eight minutes into the second half.
But Rodallega's fourth of the season forced a replay, the Colombian drilling home from the edge of the area in the 75th minute.
Both sides were denied penalties, Rodallega and Ryan Flynn both apparently fouled in the area only for referee Andre Marriner to wave play on each time.
Fulham might have saved themselves a replay in the closing stages as Philippe Senderos headed against the crossbar and Darren Bent flashed wide from a yard but the Blades were well worth a second chance.
After a late pitch inspection saw the game given the green light, Fulham's day began badly.
John Arne-Riise's involvement lasted just 10 minutes, the full-back injured as he slid to dispossess Flynn at the byline.
With rain continuing to fall there was little chance of flowing football, Patjim Kasami and Rodallega coming closest only for Neill Collins to emerge at the last moment and shepherd the ball to safety.
Former Everton man Jose Baxter bent his free-kick towards the bottom corner from 20 yards but was a yard wide of working David Stockdale.
Another heavy downpour threatened to make life even more difficult for the players but just after the half-hour, the Blades gave the game the goal it needed.
Centre-half Harry Maguire was the unlikely creator, advancing up the field before powering a low ball into the box where Porter was able to get the crucial touch. Senderos might have reacted better in defence, but Porter's instant finish was decisive.
The celebrations would have been short-lived had Marriner awarded Fulham a penalty a matter of seconds after the restart but he was unmoved by Rodallega's appeal.
The striker was one-on-one with George Long after connecting with Muamer Tankovic's through ball and appeared to be clipped on his way through.
As it was the lead held until the interval and within 90 seconds of the second half, United were without both men involved in their goal.
Porter was replaced at half-time by new signing Stefan Scougall and Maguire followed him in making an early exit after collapsing in pain for the second time in the match.
The disruption was to get much worse for United in the 53rd minute when Doyle lashed out at Chris David off the ball and was dismissed without hesitation. David's reaction was theatrical to say the least, but the lack of dissent from Doyle suggested he had erred.
Remarkably, the sending-off was almost followed by the hosts' second goal as Flynn broke at pace, shrugged off Hughes and drilled low at the near post. Fortunately for Fulham, Stockdale stood firm and saved with feet.
The addition of Bent from the bench at least gave Fulham a proven scorer on the field, while the mercurial Adel Taarabt joined the fray with 24 minutes remaining.
But the League Two side would not lie down and with 70 minutes gone, the direct running of Scougall and Flynn left Fulham all at sea and just as the latter closed in on goal he was tripped by Hughes.
Marriner again waved away appeals, seemingly incorrectly. It was a massive call and the visitors cashed in with 15 minutes left.
It took a single moment of quality from Rodallega, who shuffled into space 20 yards from goal and fired low into the bottom corner.
That gave his side the platform to press for the win and it almost came as United finally flagged. First Senderos rattled the woodwork and the centre-half was involved again in a move that saw Bent fluff his finish after Pajtim Kasami nodded across goal.
Anything less than a return trip to Craven Cottage would have been harsh indeed and some stout defending in added time secured it.

Rene Meulensteen: 'We weren't good enough to win'
Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen has said that his players did not play well enough to beat Sheffield United in the FA Cup this afternoon.
The home side took the lead through Chris Porter, but Hugo Rodallega equalised for Fulham with 15 minutes left.
Despite some late pressure, the Cottagers were unable to find the winner and now face a replay at Craven Cottage.
"They [Sheffield United] gave it their all and got their noses in front. We didn't produce enough quality to get the second goal," Meulensteen told BBC Sport.
"If there are positives to take out of the game it is that we are still in FA Cup and the young players did well."
Fulham are back in league action against Swansea City on Tuesday night.

Fulham are looking to sign Porto midfielder Steven Defour ahead of this week's transfer deadline.
Craven Cottage chief Rene Meulensteen is interested in bringing the 41-cap Belgian international to the Premier League on a permanent basis - but may have to settle for an initial loan deal.
Meulensteen has been hoping to add Defour - who will be heading to the World Cup this summer - to his ranks for around £4million.
However, Porto reckon that they'll be able to get more for the former Standard Liege man in the summer - especially if he stars in Brazil.
Defour has been a key part of Marc Wilmots' side in the run up to the summer's tournament, increasingly playing a pivotal role as part of an all-Standard alumni at the heart of midfield - alongside Axel Witsel and Marouane Fellaini.
He's seen as both an alternative and a potential partner to the Cottagers' chief target, Ravel Morrison.

Sheffield draw with lucklustre Fulham
London – Sheffield United put their League One relegation worries aside and gave a battling performance to draw 1-1 with unimpressive Premier League strugglers Fulham in the fourth round of the FA Cup at Bramall Lane on Sunday.
United, who played most of the second half with 10 men after skipper Michael Doyle was sent off, went ahead after 31 minutes when Chris Porter scored. Fulham equalised through Colombian Hugo Rodallega 15 minutes from the end.
Porter reacted quicker to a cross from Harry Maguire, getting to the ball ahead of Fulham defender Philippe Senderos to touch home past goalkeeper David Stockdale.
The balance of the match tipped Fulham's way when Doyle was sent off for an off-the-ball kick at Fulham's Muamer Tankovic after 53 minutes and after both teams had strong penalty appeals turned down, Fulham equalised.
Rodallega made room for himself on the edge of the penalty area and fired wide of goalkeeper George Long. It was his fourth goial of the season with all four coming in cup competitions.
United, four times winners of the trophy but now the lowest ranked side left in the competition, were far from overawed by a Fulham side battling to avoid the drop from the Premier League and deserve their place in the fifth round draw at 7.35pm on Sunday.
The sides will replay will at Craven Cottage next month.

Fulham slopped through the mud at a half-empty Bramhall Lane this morning with a makeshift lineup and managed to come away with a draw. Fielding three promising young players and eight who haven't been able to nail down a regular starting position, Fulham faced another relegation struggler two divisions down. With the condition of the pitch, it was never likely to be a celebration of classic football. Instead, it had all the earmarks of a traditional January match in the third division.
The first victim of the playing conditions was John Arne Riise who went off after 9 minutes. He was replaced by Ange Freddy Plumain who slotted into midfield with Damien Duff taking over at left back. Plumain joined Muamer Tankovic, Chris David, and Joshua Passley to give us what must be our youngest lineup in ages – even accounting for Duff and Karagounis.
For Fulham there was a lot of patient buildup and either wild shots or loss of possession. Of the kids, Plumain was the most disappointing. He moves well and is comfortable with the ball at his feet, but he seemed unable to pass or cross from wide positions. David is easily the most mature and "at home" of the four, and Passley – who I'd not heard much talk about – was more than competent in the RB position.
Fulham continued to control the ball – ESPN gives us 74% possession over the 90+ minutes – with little danger imposed on the Blades' goal. United scored first completely against the run of play, and it took the sending off of United's captain for a disgusting off-the-ball attack on David to finally rouse Fulham to the realization that they might actually win this tie. The last 20 minutes saw the introduction of Bent and Taraabt to supplement the woefully ineffective Rodallega. Our enigmatic Colombian provided the equalizer with a clinical turn and shoot from just outside the area. It was Tankovic who found him.
Senderos hammered the cross bar with a nice glanced header, and there were a couple of decent saves by the Blades' keeper, but when the whistle finally blew it was clear that neither relegation struggler got a result they could be happy with – another match in a crowded schedule just ten days from now.
Oh, each team had a reasonable shout for a penalty ignored by Andre Marriner. Of the two, I thought United had the better claim, but that's all academic.
HatterDon's Man of the Match is Pajtim Kasami. If I were Alistair MacHatter, I'd be building Fulham's future around the guy.

Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen has backed his decision to make 11 changes in the 1-1 FA Cup draw with Sheffield United.
Not one player who started in the 2-0 defeat at Arsenal made the cut and Meulensteen watched on as Hugo Rodallega's second-half equaliser forced a replay after Chris Porter's opener.
Fulham's League One hosts looked to be good value for their lead but the dismissal of captain Michael Doyle for an altercation with Chris David gave the Premier League outfit a way back into the game.
Youngsters Josh Passley and Muamer Tankovic were handed their first senior starts and Meulensteen believes that he needed to swap things around with one eye on his side's vital league meeting with Swansea.
"I think every person with a bit of common sense can understand (my team)," he said.
"If one person respects the FA Cup it's me and I'd love to stay in it but we play Sunday at 1pm for television and then go to Swansea on Tuesday then every man with a little common sense understands you have to maximise your possibilities and minimise your risk. That's what we are doing.
"The Swansea game is important to us so it works two ways: It gives a chance to the players who are going to face Swansea to have an extended preparation and a chance for the others to play here.
"That's what you've got a squad for. Every squad member is a valuable player and has to deliver when called upon."
Speaking of the replay, Meulensteen said: "It's like an extended Christmas period for us. I haven't even taken my tree down yet."
However, the Fulham boss admitted his frustration at not being able to find a way past the Blades who played the majority of the second-half with 10 men following Doyle's sending-off.
"I'm not happy with a replay, I don't think that is the right word because looking at the second half and the red card you should - as a Premier League team - be able to put the game to bed," he said.
"We lacked a bit of quality. In hindsight we were a bit lucky to still be in the cup because one of the breaks they had could have hurt us and they had a penalty shout that could have been given."
Meulensteen also bemoaned a late chance that substitute Darren Bent failed to convert from close-range after an onslaught of pressure from the visitors.
"Darren's was a poor miss, especially for him because that's what he's made his life on - goalscoring and those little chances," he said.
"That's where those players turn up and he's disappointed with himself as you can imagine."
Blades boss Nigel Clough saluted his side's work-rate and admitted to a sense of disappointment, despite the numerical disadvantage.
"It was an incredible effort by the players to go down to 10 men and work the way they did and also to be a threat for that second goal which we kept trying to get," Clough said.
"The first half we were a little bit disappointed that we didn't play more. We got the the goal but I thought we should have been better on the ball.
"I thought we were better on the ball in the second half, we defended on the ball when we had to and, apart from their brilliant strike from the edge of the box, we might have won it."

The winners of North End and Forest's FA Cup with Budweiser fourth round replay face a fifth round tie away from home.
They will face the winners of the only other drawn tie, at either Sheffield United's Bramall Lane or Fulham's Craven Cottage, after the two sides drew 1-1 in south Yorkshire on Sunday afternoon.
The replay date and ticket details will be confirmed before 9.30am on Monday morning, once The FA have confirmed the TV selections and dates.
The fifth round tie between the winners of the two ties would take place on the weekend of 15th and 16th February, when North End are currently scheduled to face promotion rivals Leyton Orient at Deepdale.

Fulham's move to sign Porto and Belgium midfielder Steven Defour has been blocked and he will remain in Portugal.
The 25-year-old has been the subject of advances from the Premier League side and held talks with the west Londoners over a move to Craven Cottage.
However, the Portuguese champions have instead sold Argentine midfielder Lucho Gonzalez, who heads to Qatar.
Therefore, former Standard Liege star Defour is now required at the Estadio Dragao.
"Steven has to stay at Porto," the player's agent Paul Stefani told the Independent.
"They sold Lucho Gonzalez and decided that Steven can take his place.
"We had to wait some days because to find out what Porto wanted to do and he had a meeting on Saturday night where they informed him of the decision.
"He is happy to stay but he was also happy go to Fulham. He had some good talks with them and it was a fantastic option but he has two years left on his contract in Portugal.
"Fulham made a very good impression and maybe we will see what happens in the future."

Meulensteen defends 11 changes for Sheffield United FA Cup draw as 'common sense'
Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen defended his decision to make 11 changes for the FA fourth round clash at Sheffield United, insisting it was basic common sense.
An unfamiliar Cottagers side containing debutant Josh Passley and rookies such as Chris David and Muamer Tankovic were almost dumped out of the cup by their League Two opponents, who played the last 37 minutes with 10 men following Michael Doyle's off-the-ball kick.
Chris Porter's instinctive first-half finish had put the Blades ahead and that looked to be enough until Hugo Rodallega's score secured a 1-1 draw and a replay 15 minutes from time.
It may have been a different story had Meulensteen fielded a full-strength team but with a relegation battle to fight and a trip to Swansea on Tuesday night, that never crossed his mind.

Fulham have made a bid for Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley and have enquired about a loan move for Valencia midfielder Sergio Canales.
Former Manchester United defender Bardsley has excelled under manager Gus Poyet and Cottagers boss Rene Meulensteen sees him the right sort of character to help his side's bid to beat relegation.

Bent fires high and wide to let Blades off the hook

t was the kind of missed chance that made Sandra Redknapp famous, with Darren Bent rediscovering the inaccuracy from two yards that has dogged his career just when he could have given Fulham a fortuitous place in the FA Cup fifth round.
Two yards out and with the goal at his mercy four minutes from full-time, Bent skewed his shot high and wide to evoke memories of the howler which signalled the end of his Tottenham career when Harry Redknapp suggested his "missus could do better."
As a result of Bent's miss, and a similar wasted opportunity by Philippe Senderos, Fulham must prepare for a replay tomorrow week after failing to overcome Nigel Clough's League One outfit.
The fact the Blades are languishing fourth from bottom of the third tier yet were still able to hold Fulham after being reduced to 10 men following the 53rd-minute dismissal of their captain, Dubliner Michael Doyle, emphasised the paucity of the Premier League team's performance.
"Looking at the second half, we should be able to put the game away after the red card," Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen said. "But maybe we have been lucky because they had a penalty that could have been given. Then again, Darren should have scored. He is disappointed, but he hasn't said anything. He knows."

Meulensteen's admission that the home side were unfortunate not to be handed a penalty after 71 minutes, following Aaron Hughes' foul on Ryan Flynn, was echoed by Clough, who erupted following Andre Marriner's refusal to award a spot-kick.
Clough and Marriner exchanged words on the touchline following the incident and the United manager insisted that the Premier League official had failed his team.
"Andre is one of the nicest guys you will meet, but some of his decisions today were not the greatest," Clough said.
After incessant rain fell overnight, Marriner was forced to undertake two pitch inspections before passing the sodden surface fit just an hour before kick-off.
United deservedly opened the scoring on 31 minutes when Chris Porter netted at the near post following a cross by Harry Maguire.
The red card gave Fulham a route back into the game, but they took their time to navigate themselves to safety. They finally took advantage of their extra man when Hugo Rodallega scored from 20 yards after 75 minutes to equalise.

Fulham are hopeful of sealing a £4m deal for Porto midfielder Steven Defour this week, according to reports from The Mirror.
West Ham's Ravel Morrison has been the Cottagers' top target for some time, but it is believed that the East London club are against the idea of selling one of their star names to a side they are in direct competition with to avoid relegation.
As a result Rene Meulensteen has been looking at other targets, and has outlined Defour as a priority.
The 41-capped Belgian international is valued at around £4m, and the Fulham chief is confident that a deal can be struck before the transfer deadline passes.
However, he may have to settle for an initial loan swoop with a view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season, with Porto keen to see if their man's valuation will rise if he impresses at the World Cup.
Defour is a regular in his national side's squad, and is expected to represent them in Brazil later this year.
Although he is seen as an ideal alternative to Morrison, Meulensteen is said to be ready to make a fresh offer for the Hammers ace this week.

Fulham have reportedly made a bid to bring defender Phil Bardsley to the club from relegation rivals Sunderland.
Sky Sports report that the London side have made a bid for Bardsley, who played under current Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen when the Dutch manager was a coach at Manchester United.
Bardsley found himself out of the Sunderland side at the beginning of the season, following a much publicised falling out with former Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio, but has since returned to favour and has made 15 Premier League appearances for the Black Cats this season.
However Sky report that he could be set to move on. Fulham are targeting defensive reinforcements in their battle to stay in the Premier League and are believed to have targeted Bardsley to help shore up their leaky defence.
The Cottagers have conceded 48 goals in the Premier League this season – more than any other side – and currently sit one place outside the relegation zone in 17th place. Sunderland are currently two places behind in 19th position and must now decide whether they are willing to sell to a relegation rival.

Fulham want to sign Valencia midfielder Sergio Canales on loan, according to the Daily Mirror.
Valencia are reportedly willing to sanction a loan move in order to put the 22-year-old in the shop window for a potential sale.
The Daily Mail say Everton are also interested in Canales but that Fulham are hopeful they will be able to agree a deal for the former Real Madrid youngster.
Manchester United were apparently keen on Canales during Whites boss Rene Meulensteen's time at Old Trafford.

After playing the entirety of Fulham's 1-1 draw at Sheffield United in the FA Cup with Budweiser on Sunday, Muamer Tanković's appetite for First Team football has been well and truly whet.
The 18-year-old was making his full debut for the Whites at Bramall Lane and was many fans' choice for man of the match following a confident display full of intelligent passing, while he also set up Hugo Rodallega for the equaliser.
"I enjoyed myself very much," Tanković told fulhamfc.com. "When you play with good players, that can only help you improve, and we have a lot of good players here. That's what I love to do, I love to play football, and I know that I have to keep working hard.
"It felt very nice to play 90 minutes and hopefully I'll get more minutes. I was pleased I was able to provide Hugo with the assist for the goal and I'd love to play again in the next game."
The Sweden youth international began the match in the hole behind Rodallega but, shortly after Blades captain Michael Doyle was sent off, he was positioned slightly deeper to accommodate substitute Darren Bent as the visitors looked for a way back into the tie.
It's not a role that he's occupied regularly in his career, but Tanković demonstrated his versatility by linking play up brilliantly alongside Giorgos Karagounis in the middle of the park – between them, the pair had 225 touches of the ball.
"I played central midfield second half and felt alright there," he said. "There was a bit more space there because they obviously went down to 10 men.
"I'm not used to playing in that role but I can play it and whatever position I'm asked to fill, I'll do my best to perform well there. I want to do my job for the team regardless of what position it's in, and I enjoyed it on Sunday."
There were real concerns pre-match that the game would have to be postponed following heavy downpours, with referee Andre Marriner conducting three pitch inspections before giving the green light.
And while much of the pitch was playable, there were some areas where Fulham's desired tactics weren't at all feasible.
"It was a little bit difficult to play on the pitch after all the rain," Tanković admitted. "It suited Sheffield United but it didn't suit us very much with the way we want to play football because we prefer to keep the ball on the ground.
"Sometimes the ball would get stuck in the mud and just stop. You could see when Ange-Freddy [Plumain] got the ball on the left, he was running with it and the ball just stopped. It was very frustrating because when you get one-v-one like he did and the ball stops then it's a missed opportunity to score."
The draw means the sides will meet again on Tuesday 4th February for the right to face Preston North End or Nottingham Forest in the Fifth Round, and Tanković is hoping he did enough to convince René Meulensteen to give him another run-out at Craven Cottage.
"Hopefully I'll get that – I'll work hard in training and we'll see," he said. "Hopefully the weather will be better in London next week – the pitch will be better at home and we'll be able to play our football.
"I think, on Sunday's performance, we deserve to be in this cup, whereas I'm not sure Sheffield do. A Replay wasn't what we wanted but I think they got a little bit lucky when they scored the first goal because we seemed to have the game under control, but next game when we play at home I'm confident that we can shut them out."

Fulham dashed in bid for Steven Defour
Fulham's bid to sign Steven Defour has ended in failure after Porto decided they will not allow the Belgium midfielder to leave.
Defour, 25, held talks with Fulham's chief executive Alastair Mackintosh last week and was ready to sign a three-and-half-year deal to move to west London for around £4million.
But after the Portuguese champions confirmed the sale of club captain Lucho Gonzalez to Qatar Sports Club on Saturday, Defour's agent revealed that his client will not be leaving.
"Steven has to stay at Porto. They sold Lucho Gonzalez and decided that Steven can take his place," said Paul Stefani.
"We had to wait some days because to find out what Porto wanted to do and he had a meeting on Saturday night where they informed him of the decision. He is happy to stay but he was also happy go to Fulham. He had some good talks with them and it was a fantastic option but he has two years left on his contract in Portugal. Fulham made a very good impression and maybe we will see what happens in the future."
German side Schalke were also interested in taking Defour, who has struggled to hold down a regular place since joining Porto from Standard Liege in 2011. But Defour, who tweeted a good luck message to Argentina international Gonzalez on Sunday, is now expected to play more of a part under coach Paulo Fonseca.

Swansea City - Fulham Preview: Both sides look for relegation reprieve
Michael Laudrup's Welsh outfit have endured a poor run of form of late, while Rene Meulensteen is yet to significantly reverse his side's fortunes since taking over from Martin Jol
Swansea City will regard the visit of Fulham as an opportunity to arrest an eight-game winless run in the Premier League.
That alarming dip in form has seen Michael Laudrup's side drop to within three points of the relegation zone, having enjoyed an eight-point cushion in early December, when Fulham were 18th.
Rene Meulensteen's side have since climbed one place but the gap to Swansea is just two points and Fulham can go above their hosts for the first time since August with a victory on Tuesday.
But away days have provided Fulham with little reason for cheer this season, particularly since the 4-1 win at Crystal Palace in October.
Fulham have played seven away matches in the top flight since that triumph, winning just one and conceding 22 goals in the process.
A laboured 1-1 draw at League One side Sheffield United in the FA Cup underlined Fulham's difficulties on the road, although Meulensteen made 11 changes for Sunday's game.
Swansea's recent home form will offer the visitors some cause for optimism, however, with Laudrup's men having lost their last three at the Liberty Stadium.
The hosts may cite mitigating circumstances, though, having played Everton, Manchester City and Tottenham in that run.
Nonetheless, if Swansea are unable to halt the slump soon, they will be in danger of losing their Premier League status after three years in the top flight.
November's meeting between the two saw Swansea run out 2-1 winners, as Jonjo Shelvey netted the winner in the last 10 minutes.
Wilfried Bony was the Welsh club's hero on Saturday as he came off the bench at half-time to score twice and secure a 2-1 FA Cup triumph over Birmingham City.
With six goals in his last six games, the Ivorian is likely to start against Fulham, but Laudrup has several injury concerns.
Shelvey (hamstring), Michu and Jose Canas (both ankle) are definitely out, while midfielders Nathan Dyer (ankle) and Jonathan de Guzman (calf), as well as goalkeeper Michel Vorm (knee), could come into the reckoning.

I was in and out yesterday but heard the game on the radio.
I thought the team selection was spot on: a good blend of abilities, personalities and seniority.
In some ways the red card probably went against us. I know people will say "we couldn't beat 10 men from down the leagues" but these days red cards can focus the minds and it probably made United feel happy with their "what we have we hold" approach, making it even harder for us to find a way through.
It's something we've talked about a bit in the past but if a team is well organised and can't be drawn out then it can be mighty hard to get through them. Then we'll see stats like we saw yesterday: ¾ of possession, not much penetration. Yeah, you'd hope that class would tell in the end and if United had had 11 I suspect we'd have found a way through, but there we are.
We were away from home in bad weather with a team of kids and reserves, against a team who would have seen this as a great chance to kick start their season. I think a draw is nothing to moan about and seems entirely reasonable. Yes, a certain disappointing forward might have won it at the end but I think we're learning that the certain disappointing forward isn't quite as advertised (we once bought something off ebay for Stanley: it was described "as new" but certainly wasn't, being broken in some places and covered in food. We complained, heard nothing, then sent it back and ebay gave us a refund. Would that such things were possible with broken centre-forwards).
We'll win the replay and then have a nice home draw against a team from a lower division. This season has been many things but the cup is opening up for us.

Fulham are weighing up a January swoop for Reading utility man Royston Drenthe, Sports Direct News understands.
The Cottagers are on the lookout for a left-back and, having had their £4million offer for Swansea City's Neil Taylor rejected, they have switched their attention to Drenthe, who can operate on the left side of defence or midfield.
Head coach Rene Meulensteen is considering a £2.5million move for his fellow countryman, who has 18 months remaining on his Royals deal.

Fulham Transfers: 5 Strikers To Escape Relegation
Fulham are in a heap of trouble. They currently sit 17th in the table, just a single point above West Ham, Sunderland and Cardiff City.
The worrying thing is that the other sides are improving, whereas the Cottagers aren't.
Cardiff are revitalised under Ole Gunnar Solksjaer and Sunderland, with the help of Adam Johnson, are beginning to capture some form. West Ham are the masters of the great escape and you wouldn't bet against them doing it again.
Fulham have only scored seven goals in 2014, three of which came against Norwich. The Cottagers don't score more than a single goal in a game either, just five times out of the last 12.
The concerning results include a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Hull City, as well as a 4-1 drubbing against Sunderland.
On the horizon Fulham have crucial games against Swansea and Southampton, as well as the difficult task of Manchester United and Liverpool.
Although they leak goals, the concern lies up front. Against Sheffield United they wasted some golden chances, including a sitter from Darren Bent and an air-kick from Hugo Rodallega.
It's looking likely that they'll keep hold of Dimitar Berbatov but he can't save Fulham singlehandedly. He needs help- here's five players that can give him exactly that.
5. Troy Deeney

The Watford big man is enjoying a successful season, hitting 11 goals in this years Championship. The Hornets are currently ten points off a play-off place so promotion looks unlikely.
If Deeney wants to play Premier League football this is the sort of chance he must take. He came painfully close last year after his side lost in the play-off final to Cardiff and this year he won't get that same chance.
He's certainly capable of making the step up. He gets a lot of goals and causes defences real problems due to his size. The Premier League is very physical but theres no denying that Deeney can take it.
He even has an FA Cup goal against Manchester City on his CV, which shows he can beat the leagues top defences.
Deeney will also be a cheaper option to most alternatives and everyone loves a bargain.
4. Danny Ings

Another option from the second tier of English football is Burnley's Danny Ings, who has become his sides saviour this season after the departure of Charlie Austin to QPR.
He's also been in fine form and taken the league by storm, hitting 16 goals and forming a deadly partnership with Sam Vokes, taking Burnley from relegation trouble last season to promotion aspirations.
Burnley were top of the league for a while but now slip to third, nine points behind leaders Leicester. They're still hot on the tail of QPR but there's a real danger they could fall in the play-offs.
That's what could swing the move in Fulhams favour. The chance of playing Premier League football would be a difficult one to turn down, especially as Burnley seem to be stuttering.
It may take a bit of cash to convince Burnley to part with their star man but if they could it would be a tremendous boost to Rene Meulensteens side.
3. Rickie Lambert

The Southampton striker is proven in the Premier League and can boast that he's a full England international, scoring with his first ever touch in a three lions shirt.
However, that was a while ago now and if Lambert wants to seal his plane seat to Brazil it may take a fresh challenge.
Southampton were the surprise package at the start of the season and were pushing for a spot in Europe. Though that is still very much achievable the Saints steam train is starting to slow down and Lambert is at the centre.
He's hit 6 goals this season but everyone knows he is capable of a much better return. He's beginning to become second-string at Southampton so this could be the perfect time to move.
He's been involved in a lot of speculation this January, which suggests the Saints are willing to listen to offers. All Fulham have to do is make the right one.
2. Wilfried Bony

The Ivorian forward is a shiny light in what has been a fairly disappointing display for Swansea this season, as they get sucked towards relegation trouble.
They're not in as bad a situation as Fulham but they will be looking over their shoulders and there are some doubts as to whether they can avoid the drop after losing Roberto Martinez to Everton.
Bony has hit seven goals this season, the same amount as the current tally of last years golden boot winner Robin Van Persie. It's also more than Roberto Soldado, Christian Benteke and Samuel Eto'o.
It may be time for Bony to jump ship. He won't attract the attention of the top clubs in the league, nor will he want to drop down a level or play for a smaller side.
That's what makes this difficult, as it would take some serious negotiations. Stranger things have happened, he'd create quite a partnership with Berbatov.

He's the championships golden boy, the pride of Yorkshire and a superb striker. The Scotsman is high on a lot of peoples wish list.
Ross McCormack is bringing back the glory days at Elland Road this season and currently has a total of 17 goals in the league this season. However, there's a problem.
The problem is his club, Leeds United, aren't good enough for him. They currently sit 12th in the league and frankly he's wasted at a mid-table Championship club.
They could still reach the play-offs as they are just six points behind but with the talented teams around them, Leeds won't be promoted this year.
He's attracted the attention of West Ham this window but they haven't been able to pry him away. A real problem is that he is the clubs new captain, clearly a move to try and keep him.
At the start of next season there is a very high chance he will be playing in the top division- so why not jump now, enjoy a good half season in the Premier League and attract the attention of a top half club?

Rene Meulensteen says he is confident Dimitar Berbatov will still be a Fulham player at the end of the week.
Berbatov's agent has stated that the Bulgarian, whose contract expires in the summer, would like to leave Craven Cottage during this month's transfer window.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has dismissed reports he is interested in Berbatov, who has also been linked with a return to his former club Tottenham.
Meulensteen insists Fulham have received no approach for the player – and he does not expect one before Friday's deadline.
"I expect him to stay, yes, because there has been no interest so far," said the Whites head coach.
And the Dutchman says he has no current plans to add a forward to his squad as Fulham battle to stay in the Premier League.

Fulham FC's Motspur Park training ground was the venue for the latest stage of the Zesh Rehman Foundation's (ZRF) efforts to tackle under-representation of British Asians in football.
The ZRF flagship project, 'Sidelined-2-Sidelines', funded by the Professional Footballers' Association and the Premier League, aims to address the imbalance in the number of British Asian coaches in football by giving 50 young participants the opportunity to gain football-related qualifications, learn from professional club coaches and acquire the necessary skills to act as role models within their communities.
Fulham FC has nominated this Saturday's home fixture against Southampton as its designated 'Kick It Out' awareness match and, earlier this month, coaches from the Premier League club delivered a theory session focusing on 'Producing Technical Players' and a coaching master class for a number of coaches from the ZRF.
Fulham Under-11s Academy Lead Coach and Coach Educator Keith Stiles, who co-hosted the session alongside Under-12s Support Coach Rupesh Popat, said: "The coaches were very receptive and actively involved throughout. Initiatives like this are very important as they give young people an opportunity to get a better insight of how the Academy system works and the step-up from grassroots coaching to Academy level.
"I fully support the aims behind the ZRF, and for them to have a mentor on board like Rupesh who is already working within the Academy system, will give the cohort of coaches a ready-made role model to aspire to".
Rehman was the first British Asian to play in the Premier League when he made his debut for Fulham against Liverpool in April 2004.
Now playing his football in the Malaysian Super League for Pahang FA, for whom he recently lifted the Charity Cup on his debut, the foundation that runs under the Pakistan international captain's name continues to grow with strong support from the football governing bodies and a number of professional clubs all geared towards striving to change perceptions and myths surrounding British Asians in football by providing opportunities to disadvantaged and under-represented communities.
Rehman said: "I am delighted that Fulham FC has opened their doors to give young people from my Foundation an opportunity to learn from experienced Academy coaches. To have Keith and Rupesh spend over four hours on a Saturday afternoon to support the development of community coaches is a testament to everyone at Fulham.

Since the launch of the initiative, a number of young coaches have experienced coaching roles within professional club academies and community departments, including Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers who are formal partners of the project, as well as Fulham and Crystal Palace.
Vikas Sadiq, who coaches on the Schools Programme and Soccer Schools at Fulham FC Foundation, said: "12 months ago this was just a distant dream. I've always had a passion for football but never thought I would be working at a professional club.
"Without the support of the ZRF this would not have been possible and it's like a dream to be coaching at Fulham and one I hope to make the most of. The workshop at Motspur Park was possibly one of the best we've had and I know I will be implementing the information given to me into my future coaching sessions."

Swansea City v Fulham – Premier League preview
Two Premier League strugglers clash in south Wales on Tuesday night as Swansea City and Fulham tussle for three vital points.
Both sides survived FA Cup scares against lower league opposition at the weekend and will turn their focus to moving away from the Premier League relegation zone this week.
Swansea came from behind at Championship side Birmingham City thanks to a Wilfried Bony brace, while Fulham's Hugo Rodallega scored a late equaliser to spare the Whites any blushes at League One Sheffield United on Sunday.
Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen made no less than eleven changes to the side that lost 2-0 at Arsenal in their previous game as their Fourth Round tie was rescheduled for television, meaning the Cottagers have just one day to recover for their trip to Swansea.
However, history bodes well for Fulham when it comes to this fixture. The away team has won this match on the last four occasions – including Swansea's 2-1 win at Craven Cottage back in November.
Swansea have been awful at home this season too, winning just two Premier League games at the Liberty Stadium. In fact, no side has won less home games that Michael Laudrup's side in the Premier League this season.

Jonjo Shelvey, Michu and Jose Canas are definitely out for Swansea. However, midfielders Nathan Dyer and Jonathan de Guzman, as well as goalkeeper Michel Vorm, could come back into the team.
Having made 11 changes to the team for Sunday's FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Bramall Lane, Fulham will be comparatively fresh, with Fernando Amorebieta and Matt Briggs the Whites' only absentees. Left-back John Arne Riise is also a doubt after limping out of Sunday's draw at Sheffield United.

Fulham target Canales loan
Premier League strugglers Fulham want to sign Valencia playmaker Sergio Canales, according to reports.
The Daily Mirror have revealed this morning that the west London side are tracking the Che attacker, and hope to bring him in on loan before the end of the transfer window.
The former Real Madrid man has been plagued by injuries in his short career, suffering two cruciate ligament knocks.
But Cottagers Coach Rene Meulensteen is confident that he can get the best out of the 22-year-old, and will offer to bring him to the Premier League on a six-month deal.

This is a big game for both teams, with Swansea and Fulham both sitting just above the relegation zone.
Swansea striker Wilfried Bony is a player I have been looking out for since the start of the season, because he arrived with a big reputation. He has always looked decent but he has suddenly kicked on, which is exactly what Swansea need to get out of their slump in form.
Fulham were quite good defensively in their last Premier League game, at Arsenal, but I just do not see them scoring goals on the road.
