Brazil v. Chile and Netherlands v. Mexico are the two stand-out fixtures...
Algeria won't beat Germany but I'd expect a great effort by them since their strengths, pressing and speed on the wings leads right into Germany's weaknesses. It's possible their could be a surprise. Mexico is playing with as much confidence and skill as I have ever seen them but I doubt they have enough to handle the Dutch. But like Algeria, they have a shot. Argentina,Brazil & Columbia will advance as will France as they continue avoiding any strong teams. I would expect Costa Rico to advance if they can avoid the frustration of playing a bunkering, flopping team. The US is a head and a heart match. My head says Belgium & my heart says the Yanks. Even if we win we'd have the Argies next. I find it interesting that the whole thing is set up for a Euro-South American final. The way the WC is put together is to require a CONCACAF, Asian or African team to wade through Europe and South America to advance. No wonder no one wins unless they are from those two continents.
I still think all 32 teams should be put in a hat and drawn out. The big boys all get easy groups so they can rest their squads during the 3rd group match while the rest have to go balls to the wall to advance. Ah, the magic of brown envelopes.
Come on Belgium!

Mexico to beat Netherlands. U.S. to beat Belgium. Uruguay v. Columbia? Don't know without Suarez... Everything else is beyond peradventure.

Honestly cannot see Mexico beating the Dutch, but this WCF has definately not been the 'usual suspects' type, so who knows?

Can't argue with any of them, although I've put a few pounds on Chile today just in case...
.. and they're off, with Webb officiating ....

Seems like everyone does nothing but the long ball nowadays. You hardly see any of the beautiful quick passes down the field anymore.

Long passes can be beautiful, too. e.g Oscar to Neymar. (We had someone once who could do that.)
Wall balls can be absolutely beautiful what do you remember the Brazil evolve who would make a perfect little tight triangles passing the ball deftly down one side of the field
Meant long balls stupid autocorrect
I see that Gary Medel, berk of the parish, is still acting the 'hard-man'. The guy epitomizes Chile, and is going to find he gets a few more bruises in the Fizzy league with that attitude.
I feel bad for the hulk not sure that was a handball in my eyes
I get the feeling Webb might need a few of his larger colleagues over there with him if this carries on, just so's he can get home by plane and not in little pieces in envelopes!!

The reverse angle replay does tend to indicate it was the top of the arm rather than the shoulder, but its never really conclusive, is it?
Actually think Howard has done a really good job this game.
Boring football. Occasion and involvement of home nation making it an exciting spectacle.
FT: 1-1 - another 30 minutes and then the abominable Penalty shoot out spectacle.
Brazil is lucky to still be in the WC
Brazil, in my opinion, did not deserve to win that game. My heart goes out to Chileans everywhere.
Surely their name is on the trophy. Never seen a more underwhelming team go so far in a tournament. Not impressive at all. Fred plays like my Uncle Fred and he's 80 years old. Their luck summed up by the Chilean rattling the crossbar in the final minute of extra time. Gutted for Chile.
Yea. Beat Manure at Old Trafford with Sir Alex on the pitch wailing at the ref. Brazil hasn't looked good at all but the same thing applies to them at the WC and does being in the 'big four" in the Prem. France is another one I don't get. Is Septic Bladder of French descent?
Really feel for Chile. If that shot right at the end had gone in that player's name would have lived for ever in his country. Compare Chile's endeavours with our pathetic shambles.

I thought Chile were the better side for the first 90. Brazil haven't seemed to mesh together well as a team so far.

Try this one: "Rich man busy dancing, poor man pays the band"
or" "the rich get richer"
or" "Fergie time"
You can't argue that France hasn't had the easiest route to this point and should ease into the quarters.
Brazil really lacks a striker. The first team that gets in front of them might just need to double up on Neymar and then hold on.
Brazil are very lucky to still be in the tournament. I hope to Christ they don't win it all.
wow, did anyone just see the chest and volley by the Columbian kid? Very classy strike.
Yep, hadn't heard so much of him prior to the WCF, seems to be a little prolific, whilst at Porto averaged 2.5 goals per game it seems!
Absolutely brilliant strike.

OK then, first of today, Netherlands Mexico are off - and here in the US we have two Mexican-sounding commentators, should be fun! :005:
Interesting to see Salcido in a midfield role rather than at left back
Doing well against the Dutch
Mexico 1 up @50 mins
1-1 88 mins
2-1 Holland @ 90 mins.
2-1 Netherlands pen 93 min
El Tri......screwed the pooch in the last 5 minutes :005:
Good win, very lucky, but they deserved it after the pressure they were putting on (I'm not biased, but my troubles family are Dutch!!)
Really disappointed for Mexico. I really rate their coach who is so passionate but why do so many teams now not have defenders on each post for corners? There was a ruddy great hole to aim at. Like the FA cup I want a smaller outfit to win. I know it aint going to happen but it would be nice.
Thank you and good night.

I was up for Mexico too, can't be doing with that cheat Robben. Columbia have a chance.
Without Robben Holland would be back home like our rabble. He knew what he was doing at the end and the nitwit ref fell for it. A BAFTA for his descent to the grass? :dft007:

I felt like Mexico were the better team until they scored. From then on the Dutch dominated play. I really feel like Mexico took their foot off the gas and the Dutch made them pay.

agree with this, I had the same feeling.
Costa Rica v. Greece, captains were Fulham players last year.....only solidifies in my mind how poorly run Fulham Football Club was run last season and behind. It's a shame really.
Still love the guy. Not long at Fulham but one of my favorite players.
Karagounis has already dispossessed Ruiz, knowing full well if you pressure him in close spaces, he will usually cough up the ball.
Surely he is worth a one season contract. His enthusiasm is infectious. He still has 60 mins in him.
Just robbed Ruiz when he dwelt too long on the ball.
Could he be charged by FIFA for using " insider information" :005:

Kara has done it to him twice now. Sure think having Kara back would be good in the Championship. He still has football in him.
Looking unimpressive or am I missing something? Where did all this recent hype come from?
Well done Ruiz.
Greece went to sleep for that goal. Ruiz does it again.
Ruiz - good finish!! Still think the same of him. Given time and space he is decent. Under pressure he seems to panic or over play it.
Nice to see these supposed underdogs doing well this World Cup though. Just goes to show hard work and a good team ethic does pay off.
Interesting to see the broken greek brought in. Can he save the day?
Kasey Keller on Mitro's form for club vs country, "Well he's on the field and that's a step forward."
Wow red card. Feel for CRC.
Gekas is now on though,so it's 10 against 10.
Mitroglou has touched the ball!

When properly motivated, Karagounis can clearly go more than 90 minutes
Luckily Mitroglou and Gekas are on the field ,so Los Ticos have a good chance of taking this to penalties.

Yes congrats! I've always liked the way that the Ticos play and if it weren't for snow, we might have traded groups. I just hope they didn't burn themselves out playing so hard for so long down a man. They have the WC leading foulers with a tendacy to dive coming up. Good luck!
Ha! See ya in the final with no snow! LOL

Would we have? I mean, once there are 4 qualifiers from CONCACAF, aren't there just four ping-pong balls with those qualifiers' names on them (or however it's done) put in Pot 3, with no distinction between them due to where they finished in the Hex?
Not that it's important, just curious.
It took, what, 118 or so minutes for Argentina to finally score on lowly Switzerland, and the Swiss almost tied it up after that! I'm not that impressed by the majority of the starting 11 for Argentina. If the U.S. can get past Belgium today...
Messi has a heavy load on his back.
Had it not been for Messi they'd have been out. He had 2/3 men on him practically the entire game yet the other Argentine attackers couldn't muster anything between them until right at the end when he laid it on a plate for Di Maria, who was by far the worst player on the pitch.
Very strange considering the players at their disposal, Higuain, Di Maria, Zabaleta, Garay, Mascherano and Rojo; I mean, these aren't bad footballers at all, and that's not including Sergio Aguero and Ezekiel Lavezzi.
Without a doubt, they're beatable, however, with a player like Messi, it can only take a moment...
Congrats to Costa Rica. Now it's time for the US to bring it big! Come on USA!

FIFA don't rank Switzerland that lowly:
Jun 2014
Rnk Team Pts +/- Pos
1 Spain 1485 0 Equal
2 Germany 1300 0 Equal
3 Brazil 1242 1 Up
4 Portugal 1189 -1 Down
5 Argentina 1175 2 Up
6 Switzerland 1149 2 Up
7 Uruguay 1147 -1 Down
8 Colombia 1137 -3 Down
9 Italy 1104 0 Equal
10 England 1090 1 Up
I think those standings are before the competition started.

Yedlin ??? is a nice little player
Chris Waddle, Rio and Sherahhhhhhhh
Amazing
Rio looks sunburnt.....
Seems like we get mentioned during every game of this WC
Tim Howard is a great keeper. No matter what happens.
got to feel sorry for the yanks defence. give it all for 90 only to see a fresh lukaku come off the bench. he is a beast, and from what ive seen, far superior to costa who chelsea have just signed
and now he has scored, what a team belgium have. gonna be a cracker against the argies
Agreed if not for Howard score would be 4 or 5 to zero

Devastated
good effort, lacking a decent striker for me. got to put those chances away. no shame in losing to a very talented belgium team
Well done by Belgium. Better quality side. US played hard, were committed, defended well, and were physical... but in the end, it was the better quality side who won.
Possibly the game of the tournament. Absolutely insane, and even as a non-American you've gotta be proud of that sort of effort.
Yedlin looks like a hell of a player too, maybe Clint can put in a good word?
Wow... Game of the tournament. Phenomenal. Howard made 19 saves. The US should have been dead and buried but fair play to the US they came back really strongly. Brilliant game.
Gutted man. Really had a slew of chances to somehow tie it at the end. The bounces just wouldn't go our way. And Howard for president.
Prior to joining the national team 5 weeks ago, Yedlin had played 13 professional games. You really didn't see his pace today. When he came on against Portugal you would have thought he had a motor cycle the way he went by the tired Portuguese. The kid can flat fly and seems to have a decent first touch for a defender. The future is bright both for him and the US team.
First things first, Belgium were deserving winners but I am so proud of the fight in my national team. So agonizingly close they came to pulling the match back to even through that indomitable spirit.
Tim Howard was simply amazing and cemented his place in my mind as the best US keeper ever. His perforfomance really did deserve a match winner to go with it but there will be no whining or complaining from me.
Congrats to Julian Green for what will hopefully only be his first WC goal and I do look forward to watching DeAndre Yedlin's development. He showed quite well for being thrown in the deep end of the pool during this WC.
Wondolowsky missed an easy goal at point blank range. We had enough opportunities to at least tie. Our quick short passes, especially in the midfield, were very effective. But there weren't enough opportunities in the final third. That team worked so hard. They were so determined. You could see it in their faces. They played with pride.
I had to watch it at work in a conference room. Would Donovan have made a difference? I think so. Oh, well. Klinsmann played youth, played MLS players. A work colleague watching with me commented that it would be interesting to see the difference between the club wages paid to the Belgian national team members and the U.S national team members. Can't say the U.S. team's players were 'fat and happy', or lazy from the realization they were rich rich at a young age and would never need to work again. They are still hungry. We needed a Senderos to go on when a team brings on a Lukaku and didn't have one.
Fair play to the US, they played with so much fight and passion, and are such a good footballing side...won me over after their first game....
Colombia look the best, by a country mile, but Brazil are growing into this tournament, and if they get through the next round they will win it imo

sorry I wasn't clear. I think the point he was trying to make was the presumption that huge salaries can make a player self-satisfied over time, and then fail to give his best effort once the bank account has an obscene number attached to it. I think there are players who will play hard for pride and competitive spirit regardless of how wealthy the game has already made them. But not all players, I think, are like that. Heard someone on the radio this morning claim the club team wages for the U.S. MNT players was 1/10th that of the Belgian squad. Don't know for sure that that is true, though.
I don't know about 1/10th but MLS players with the exception of a few "names" all make well less than a million $'s a year.
Besler, Yedlin, Beckerman, Zusi & probably Beasley (who plays in Mexico) all would be included. Gonzalez, Dempsey & Bradley are "designated" players and make decent salaries.
As a MLS rookie, Yedlin likely makes less than a 100k per year.
Just a couple of links to salaries to MLS players. They are a lot better compared to just a few years ago. There were a lot more players in the $30K-$50K salary range just a few years ago.
