Commiserations to the US. lousy way to go out of any competition.
Have to say that I was very disappointed with our boy's game. I don't know if he was overwhelmed by the occasion combined with his captaincy duties, but I could find something to criticize in virtually every aspect of his play.
He seemed to be playing a sort of indeterminate central midfield role, sometimes too far forward, sometimes too deep. He didn't seem to take up any useful positions, nor did he demand the ball. He didn't even do much running off the ball. Although he occasionally saw a pass (the well organized Serbian defence didn't present many options) his execution was invariably poor, either too strong or causing the receiver to check.
Perhaps I was hoping for too much in anticipating that he would take control of the game, but this certainly did not happen. He didn't seem to be in tune with his team mates.
Both defences were good but both showed naivete going forward.
His penalty was a perfect illustration of how to take one (if you're not Berbatov).
