Utaka wants England stay
Nigerian attacker linked with Bolton, Sunderland and Fulham

Portsmouth forward John Utaka has indicated that he wishes to secure a move to a Premier League club.

The Nigeria international is expected to depart Fratton Park this summer, such are the Championship team's financial woes.

Bolton, Sunderland and Fulham have all been mooted as potential suitors for Utaka, who joined Portsmouth from Rennes in 2007.

German pair Cologne and Bayer Leverkusenhave also been linked with the 28-year-old, but Utaka is keen to stay in England.

He said: "My manager is looking into the offers before him. Everything is in the air. I would like to stay in the Premier League.

"It is quick, aggressive and direct and there are loads of goals every week. And, yes, the money in England is also good."

Cottagers Refuse To Be Rushed

Fulham insist they have set no deadline for the appointment of their new manager despite the club's search for Roy Hodgson's successor threatening to drag on into its fourth week.
The Cottagers' attempts to replace Hodgson with Ajax's Martin Jol ended in failure last week when the Dutch club refused to allow their manager to join the Barclays Premier League side.

A spokesperson insisted the club will not be rushed into appointed a successor to Hodgson, who left last year's Europa League finalists for Liverpool on July 1.

"The chairman is obviously confident that we will have someone in place but we won't be rushed into making a decision," she said.

"There is no deadline. The chairman wants to make sure that he has the right man for the job and will make that decision as and when he sees necessary.

"We have our second friendly of the pre-season tour of Sweden and the chairman is very happy with the way that preparations are going under Ray Lewington so we are not panicking here."

John Pantsil returned for pre-season training at Motspur Park this week following a busy summer schedule.

The Fulham right-back represented Ghana in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa as the Black Stars produced a number of fine performances before going out to Uruguay in the harshest of circumstances.

"It was my second experience in the World Cup and it was a great experience," Pantsil said looking back on the tournament. "I played against good players and also meeting different fans was great. The atmosphere was fantastic and it was good to have a World Cup in Africa. It really felt like home when the crowd was there, everything was great.

"We were always singing and dancing to bring good spirit to the team, the Ghana team is always one, we move together and play together as a team – so that helped us."

Now back at Fulham's training ground, Pantsil explained how his pre-season training has got off to challenging start.

"There was a bit of running today," he explained. "It was intensive but my condition is pretty good and I am keen to do a lot of running and technical work. When the Team comes back from their training camp I will join in with full training. At the moment Clinton [Dempsey], Andy Johnson and I are working here.

"Last season we played a lot of games and plenty of matches in Europe on top of our Premiership games. I think that didn't allow us to get into the top ten so I think this season we will be more rested and we will be able to focus on the league and achieve our aims like we did two seasons ago."

Malmo FF 0 - 0 Fulham

The Whites travelled to the impressive Swedbank Stadium for their second and final fixture, where a bright start saw Bobby Zamora held back by Guillermo Molins and a penalty awarded after just five minutes.

However, the usually dependable Danny Murphy fired wide.

The Whites continued to press, although at the other end Molins made a more telling contribution, threading through to Daniel Larsson who was expertly beaten to the ball by Aaron Hughes.

The Northern Ireland defender also did well to block Edward Ofere moments later, with the Malmo striker taking up a dangerous position in the Fulham box.

Managed by former Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry defender Roland Nilsson, the hosts certainly suggested they were a side that would pose problems, with Brede Hangeland also on hand to out-jump Ofere and see the ball to safety.

Having found their early rhythm, it was Fulham that again went closest to a breakthrough, with Zamora meeting Bjorn Helge Riise's excellent delivery from the right. Unfortunately, last season's top goal-scorer's header dropped the wrong side of the bar.

With 20 minutes gone Murphy tested Johan Dahlin from distance, while Zamora had the ball in the net moments later, only to be ruled offside from Zoltan Gera's clever through ball.

An equally intelligent free-kick from Molins tested David Stockdale, with the young 'keeper quick to react to the midfielder's near post effort.

Impressing from the off, Dickson Etuhu could well have put his side in front with the goal at his mercy, but the Nigerian international took his eye off Zamora's teasing pull-back.

Malmo also saw a chance come and go on 35 minutes, with Miljan Mutavdzic seeing his strike deflect wide off the boot of Freddie Stoor when well placed.

The Whites certainly finished the half on top, in what was a controlled and professional 45 minutes of football.

A positive start to the second-half followed, with Zamora all but finding the breakthrough but for some brave goalkeeping from substitute Dusan Melicharek five minutes in.

Chris Baird almost found the net with a deflected strike from Gera's cross, while Hughes rose highest to one corner from the right.

Simon Davies fashioned a half chance for Zamora on the hour as Fulham continued to threaten.

That said, the home side still frustrated Fulham at every opportunity, showing exactly why they currently sit second in the Swedish Allsvenskan, five points behind leaders Helsingborgs.

Hughes was called into action again with 12 minutes remaining, beating Dardan Rexhepi to what looked a certain goal from Jiloan Hamad's drag back.

With the game drawing to a close Eddie Johnson flashed a low delivery across the box, where David Elm was unlucky not to turn the ball past the Malmo 'keeper.

Teams

Malmo: Dahlin; Vinzents, Pernennel, Andersson, Elanga; Molins, Mutavdzic, Figueredo, Durmaz; Ofere, Larsson

Fulham: Stockdale; Stoor (Kamara 76, Smith 79), Hangeland, Hughes, Konchesky; Duff (Davies 45), Etuhu (Baird 45), Murphy (Kelly 63), Riise (Elm 45); Gera (Greening 63), Zamora (E.Johnson 76).

Fulham concluded their pre-season training camp in Sweden with a goalless draw against Malmo on Tuesday evening at the Swedbank Stadion.

Speaking after the match, Ray Lewington gave his reaction to the game.

"This was another very tough game for us tonight, and first and foremost this was a great match between two teams that wanted to get the ball down and play," he said. "It was a very technical encounter with chances at either end – which was ideal for us.

"It was played in a very good spirit and that's what it's all about in friendly matches. Okay we didn't win, but I think we got a lot out of it.

"To be honest we have taken so much from the last 10 days - it's been a fantastic trip for all involved both for the players and the staff.

"We've been lucky enough to use an excellent training camp, with everything we needed to prepare. The players have worked very hard, and I think they are good for the experience.

"As I said last week, they look in top shape and have shown a lot of desire and dedication to be in the best possible condition.

"The standard of opposition has also been very high. We've had two tough games and this was a good result for us tonight considering they [Malmo] are second in their table and half way through a season.

"The younger players like David Stockdale, Matt Saunders and Alex Smith have been brilliant. Stocko has played very well, and Smithy has come in and shown that he has a lot to offer. It's been a learning curve for him, but he's coped very well. It was a shame that Matty picked up an injury, but despite that he's also acquitted himself very well too.

"The spirit is just very high in this group of lads, right from the most senior to those that perhaps do not have the experience of others.

"A few of the boys haven't perhaps played a lot of football for the Club in the last year or so, some have come back in over the summer from various loan spells too. And this has been their opportunity to show what they can do.

"We return to Motspur Park now, with the focus very much on Saturday's trip to Fratton Park to face Portsmouth. That will be another good test for us, as will the last pre-season fixture against Werder Bremen. I have to say at this stage, the squad looks very strong. It's been great preparation for the new campaign.

"For me personally, I've enjoyed the last few weeks as much as the players – they have made life very easy for me. They've been terrific.

"They haven't sulked or complained, they've just got on with the job and remained thoroughly professional, and as a result Mike Kelly, Billy McKinlay and myself have been very grateful.

"They're a smashing bunch and a real pleasure to work with."

Briggs, Hoesen, Trotta: ready or not?

Fulham's first team squad might still be feeling the effects of their epic campaign last time around so, whoever ends up replacing Roy Hodgson as the club's manager, this season could herald the emergence of some talented next generation Cottagers.

Every football fan loves to see home-grown talent coming through the ranks, so join Sport.co.uk in looking at three Fulham youngsters who could be set to make a big impact at Craven Cottage this year.

Do you agree with our picks? Which other youngsters do you think Fulham fans should keep their eyes on? Who would be your pick to replace Hodgson as manager? Have your say in the comments section below...

Matthew Briggs – In 2007, the defender became the Premier League's youngest ever player when he came on as a sub for Moritz Volz in a 3-1 defeat at Middlesbrough aged just 16 years and 65 days, but he has not made a first team appearance since. He spent a month on loan at Leyton Orient last season, playing just once – and now, aged 19, it's time for Briggs to start making his mark lest he face a career in the lower leagues.

Danny Hoesen – The 19 year-old Dutch striker was released from his loan spell at Finnish club HJK a month early this summer, which is not a particularly good sign. More encouraging, however, is his record of 5 goals in 8 games for Fulham's reserves and the club's development coach, former Blackburn and Scotland midfielder Billy McKinlay, said of him: "He's an intelligent player who has good technique and he's a threat in the final third with the movement and his positional play. Since Danny's played for the Reserves at the turn of the year, he's been a real plus for us - he's been arguably our best player."

Marcello Trotta – A 17 year-old Italian striker with a physical presence and a "natural eye for goal", Trotta (or 'Del Boy', as he'll no doubt come to be known if he makes it on these shores) quit Napoli for a crack at the Premier League and came to Fulham via a brief stint at Manchester City. He is yet to feature for the first team but, by the way he is described, he would appear to have an excellent potential mentor in Bobby Zamora.

KLINSMANN MAKES LATE APPEARANCE IN FULHAM BETTING

It's now been 25 days since Roy Hodgson left Craven Cottage for Liverpool and yet Fulham are still without a manager, and absolutely nobody - perhaps even Mohamed Al-Fayed - appears to be in a position to state with any certainty whatsoever who the next man in charge will be.

Martin Jol wasn't the only man to distance himself from speculation over the last few days, Cardiff boss Dave Jones, the supposed fallback option, has also committed himself to the Welsh club, causing his price to drift out to 13.5.

Early frontrunner Sven-Goran Eriksson is once again top of the pile at 3.8, though his agent Athole Still himself questioned the latest flutter on the Swede, claiming that no discussions had been held.

So the latest name to make an appearance among the favourites in the betting is Jurgen Klinsmann, not for any particular reason, but just presumably because punters have looked for an unemployed manager with decent name value that could be an option, and turned him into a contender.

The Bayern Munich boss, who worked for the BBC during the World Cup (does that adds anymore credence to the link?), is in to 12.0, with the German and Sven separated by Mark Hughes at 4.3, despite his advisor Kia Joorabchian hinting that he wouldn't be interested earlier this month.

Other names to linger on the outskirts are Alan Curbishley at 19.0, ideal in many ways but unwanted by Fulham fans, and current caretaker Ray Lewington at 19.5, who hasn't publicly shown interest in taking the job full-time, yet could be stuck with it for a while if Al-Fayed doesn't get a move on.

Al Fayed to bide time over Fulham appointment

FULHAM supremo Mohamed Al Fayed won't be rushed into appointing a new boss at Craven Cottage.

Despite the start of the season less than three weeks away and with potential transfer targets slipping through their fingers, Al Fayed is biding his time to find Roy Hodgson's successor after missing out on Martin Jol.

Cardiff chief Dave Jones has also ruled himself out of the running, while German Jurgen Klinsmann has emerged as a candidate for the post.

A club spokesman said: "The chairman is obviously confident that we will have someone in place but we won't be rushed into making a decision.

"We have our second friendly of the pre-season tour of Sweden [today] and the chairman is very happy with the way that preparations are going under Ray Lewington so we are not panicking.

"It's business as usual. Ray Lewington is doing a great job with the pre-season campaign and the managerial situation will be resolved as and when we have the right man for the job."

Next Fulham Manager Odds Has Mark Hughes As Strong Favourite

The Next Fulham Manager odds are coming under close scrutiny as Mark Hughes is backed into a strong favourite as support weakens for Sven Goran Eriksson.

Ex-Man City Boss Hughes Linked To Fulham
Fulham Chairman Mohamed Al Fayed has sought talks with Mark Hughes to see if the former Man City manager can be tempted back to the Premiership. Al Fayed has been in no rush to replace Roy Hodgson, who has taken over at Liverpool, but Hughes has come in for significant recent support and is now a best-priced 7/4 with 888Sport and Blue Square to take over the reins at Craven Cottage .

Eriksson On The Drift But Bilic, Klinsmann or Hitzfeld Still Tempt Punters
Former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson is weak in the Next Fulham Manager market and is out to 5/2 with Bet 365 and VC Bet. This doesn't necessarily mean that Mark Hughes is a certainty to take the Fulham job and plenty of punters think Fulham could go with an overseas manager next season but just not with Eriksson.

Former Germany manager and Spurs player Jurgen Klinsmann continues to attract support and is steady in the market at 10/1 with Coral.

Another German manager Ottmar Hitzfeld has been attracting interest at big prices and the former Bayern Munich manager (now manager of Switzerland) is now only 20/1 with a couple of firms including Ladbrokes.

Perennial management candidate Slaven Bilic also makes an appearance here and the Croatia coach has attracted support with some firms but remains 25/1 with Bet 365.

Fulham - Bradley Backing
Fulham's search for a new manager has taken a few knocks, and seen a few twists and turns although rushing into this appointment is not going to happen.

One man that has been linked with the job is America coach Bob Bradley, who has now been backed by none other than Sir Alex Ferguson: 'I think he would do well. I like Bob, I like his approach, I think he has a steely determination about him and he goes into a lot of detail in his coaching.'

Fergie, who should know a thing about good managers, also expressed his surprise at the news that Bradley has not yet been offered a new contract, with this due to expire in December so this might see him ready to move on.

The 52-year-old might not be interested in the Fulham job but the Man United manager feels he could do a lot worse than accepting the Craven Cottage post if offered to him: 'He may want the challenge himself, I think that what he has achieved with the USA has been very good.

'He is a young man and I don't think there is anything wrong with taking a challenge in Europe or England.

'I know he has been linked with Fulham and I don't think it is beyond his boundaries at all. I think he is very capable of taking on a challenge like that.'

Quite a glowing recommendation from Fergie who is, like him or not, one of the finest managers of all time!

Cottagers pay penalty

Captain Danny Murphy missed a penalty as Fulham ended their tour of Sweden with a goalless draw against Malmo FF.

The former Liverpool midfielder fired wide from the spot in the fifth minute after Guillermo Molins was penalised for holding back Bobby Zamora.

Zamora, last season`s leading goalscorer, headed just wide from an excellent Bjorn Helge Riise delivery before the striker had the ball in the net only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.

Cottagers goalkeeper David Stockdale saved well from Molins while Zamora was foiled again, this time by a fine save from substitute stopper Dusan Melicharek early in the second half.

Malmo, who sit second in the Swedish Allsvenskan, created several opening for themselves and Eddie Johnson and David Elm went close to a late winner for Fulham.

Zamora to get England chance after surgery - Exclusive

Bobby Zamora is set to be included in the next England squad after successful surgery to cure his Achilles problem.

Fulham striker Zamora, 29, had a brilliant season last term scoring 19 goals to help fire the Cottagers to the Europa League final.

But the marksman finished the season in agony due to his Achilles and needed injections to play as Fulham lost to Atletico Madrid in Europe.

His persistent nagging injury meant Zamora was unable to accept Fabio Capello's invitation to join his provisional England World Cup squad.

But Zamora has since had a successful operation to scrape scar tissue off his troubled Achilles tendon, going under the knife in late May and resting for six weeks over the summer.

He has now returned to pre-season training fully fit after playing in the club's last two friendlies - including getting on the score-sheet against Bournemouth.

Now Capello is set on finally handing the forward his international debut against Hungary at Wembley on Wednesday August 11.

Capello intends to blood new players after England's World Cup flop in South Africa.

And long-term England targetman Emile Heskey, 32, has now retired from playing for his country.

It creates a void in the England squad upfront which Capello believes Zamora is the best candidate to fill.

Zamora's imminent international debut will mark a huge turnaround in fortunes since being offloaded by West Ham to Fulham for £4.8million in July 2008.

Zamora also hopes to pen a new lucrative contract at Fulham once Roy Hodgson's successor as manager is appointed.

But he continues to attract interest from rival Premier League clubs including Birmingham City.

Mirrorsport revealed on June 30 that Brum had tabled a £6m bid for Zamora which was rejected by the Cottagers.

Birmingham and Fulham ready to swoop for Gudjohnsen after Spurs move stalls

Eidur Gudjohnsen is a target for Birmingham and Fulham after his move to Tottenham stalled.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is keen to sign the Icelandic forward after he enjoyed a successful loan spell at White Hart Lane last season.

There have been complications in renewing his loan from Monaco this summer and that has alerted a number of clubs.

Birmingham and Fulham are watching developments closely while there has also been interest from Dubai in the 31-year-old.

Fulham - Don`t Panic!
There`s only 18 days to go until the 2010 / 2011 Premier League season kicks off and without a manager at the helm of our football club I feel a bit like Corporal Jones (from Dads Army) about to issue a cry of "Don`t Panic" Mr Mainwaring!

I can`t help thinking that those eighteen days are going to shoot by and that we`ll be kicking off the new season still in something of a lull managerial wise.

But the word from inside the Fulham camp remains that the club are in no rush to make a rash appointment with a club spokesperson leaking to the media,

"The chairman is obviously confident we will have someone in place but we won`t be rushed into making a decision."

"There is no deadline. The chairman wants to make sure he has the right man for the job."

"He is very happy with the way preparations are going under Ray Lewington so we are not panicking."

"It`s business as usual, Ray Lewington is doing a great job with the pre-season campaign."

"The managerial situation will be resolved."

I should hope so, Ray Lewington has already intimated that he doesn`t want the job permanently and at the moment he`s being left to shape our hopes for the forthcoming season!

Don't Forget Ray Lewington as Big Names are Linked With Fulham Vacancy

One week ago, the talk was that striker Robbie Keane would be joining the new manager Martin Jol at Fulham.

No wonder Mohamed al Fayed, the Craven Cottage chairman, is keeping quiet about his search for a manager after Jol's snub deflated all the hype and optimism surrounding his "imminent" arrival.

Since Jol's announcement that he would stay at Ajax, there has been no comment, public or leaked, from Fulham.

The only statements have come from men supposedly in the frame for the job - or those singing candidates' praises.

Sven Goran Eriksson's agent Athole Still has issued a textbook "come and get me plea" from his client, while stating there has been no contact from the club.

Meanwhile Cardiff manager Dave Jones has ruled himself out. Whether he was ever ruled in is another matter.

Mark Hughes, who has been out of work since being fired from Manchester City, is another supposedly in al Fayed's sights, although again there has been no confirmation,

Bob Bradley, the US coach, has not stated whether he would be interested, but he has received a vote of confidence from none other than Sir Alex Ferguson, who said he would be "very capable of taking on a challenge like that".

The lack of a clear favourite and lack of urgency shown by al Fayed is good news for Ray Lewington, who has been in charge during their pre-season tour to Sweden.

The players have reacted well to their assistant's elevation to the top job and he has shown over the last three weeks that he is an able manager.

There has been one statement to come out of Fulham since their move for Jol fell through, saying that al Fayed "won't be rushed" into a decision. Which is fair enough, as is the radio silence over who is on their list since the Jol embarrassment.

But the Premier League season starts in just over three weeks' time - and it would be handy if Fulham could negotiate a route of their current state of limbo.

Lewington is, by all accounts, happy to carry on in a temporary role. But the longer he stays in charge and the closer the start of the season comes, it makes more and more sense to hand the job to him on a permanent basis.

He is of course a familiar face among the players and one with whom they would associate the success of the last two seasons: finishing in a Europa League spot in 2009 and making it to the final of that competition last term.

He has experience of management, both at Fulham and Watford. And the Fulham spokeswoman added the chairman is "very happy" with the way he has conducted his duties on their pre-season tour.

Which begs the question: if he has done so well and assisted in the club's most successful period in their history, why not give him the job?

PREM QUARTET ON COLOMBO'S CASE

Argentine starlet Mikhail Colombo is being targeted by a host of Premier League clubs, according to reports. Colombo, 16, is currently playing for Independiente in Argentina, and is part of their youth set-up where his displays have now caught the attention of a number of clubs from Europe. But it seems that England could be Colombo's destination as he also possesses an Italian passport which allows him to move without a work permit. It is understood that Fulham, West Ham and Birmingham are keen to check on him, but Tottenham are understood to be leading the chase for the goalscoring midfielder. Colombo's representatives are now understood to be holding talks over his future, with Independiente seemingly willing to listen to offers for one of their most exciting prospects.

Osasuna interest in Manuel Almunia could spark Arsenal move for Fulham's Mark Schwarzer - report

Osasuna have set their sights on signing Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, according to The Daily Mail.

The 33-year-old's position at the Emirates has looked uncertain over the last few weeks. He watched on from the stands as manager Arsene Wenger opted to play three of his back-up goalkeepers in early pre-season friendlies, while Fulham's Mark Schwarzer has been heavily linked with a move to the Gunners.

Arsenal had a £2 million bid turned down from Fulham for Schwarzer earlier in the summer but a move may still be on the cards if Almunia, who has also been linked with Atletico Madrid, opts to move back to Spain.

The Gunners may have to accept a bargain price for Almunia to make room in the squad for Schwarzer.

However, a move for the Australian may take some time to materialise. Fulham are yet to appoint a new manager following Roy Hodgson's move to Liverpool, which means Arsenal may have to wait for a new boss to arrive at Craven Cottage before any deal can be completed.

Pre-season 2010: Malmo 0-0 Fulham - Cottagers fire blank in Sweden as Danny Murphy misses first half penalty
Fulham end Swedish tour with eventful stalemate...

Fulham ended their 10-day tour of Sweden with a goalless draw at the Swedbank Stadion against Swedish side Malmo.

The Cottagers enjoyed the best of the opening exchanges, but Danny Murphy, known for his cool head from the penalty spot, missed from 12 yards after just five minutes on the clock, side-footing wide of Johan Dahlin's goal.

The miss would see a swing in the game when just minutes later a threatening corner-kick almost led to an opening goal for the home side. Malmo failed to take advantage of a David Stockdale slip, however, with the goalkeeper close to a blunder on his fourth appearance of the pre-season campaign.

That moment seemed to inspire Malmo and further danger was created without worrying Stockdale, although the best chance would fall to Fulham on the 25 minute mark, with Dahlin quick off his line to save a close-range Zoltan Gera attempt with the Hungarian through on goal.

Fulham did eventually have the ball in the back of the net, but Bobby Zamora's effort after 40 minutes was judged correctly as offside.

Paul Konchesky was then booked moments before Zamora slashed a close range effort over the crossbar, minutes before the half-time whistle was blown.

The ending to the half-time break saw the introduction of Chris Baird, Simon Davies, and David Elm, as Fulham continued the second half as they ended the first, Zamora producing an acrobatic save from Dahlin after 49 minutes.

Minutes later, substitute Baird saw a close range effort deflected off a defender for a corner, moments before the introduction of Jonathan Greening and Stephen Kelly.

The game eventually lost all fluidity, however, as both sides caused disruption with further substitutions, but Malmo dominated possession without creating any meaningful chances.

With 20 minutes of the game remaining, Fulham finally began to pressure Malmo, but the Swedish side remained resolute and defensively strong throughout.

Diomansy Kamara eventually replaced Zamora with just 10 minutes remaining, but the Senegalese forward was injured in a clash and had to leave the field of play.

Fulham ended their tour of Sweden as it began with an eventful draw, although the London side will be happy with the chances created and the football produced.

Fulham: Stockdale; Stoor (Kamara 76 (Smith 79)), Hangeland, Hughes, Konchesky; Duff (Davies 45), Etuhu (Baird 45), Murphy (Kelly 63), Riise (Elm 45); Gera (Greening 63), Zamora (Johnson 76).

Fayed Seeks Hughes Talks

Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed is seeking talks with former Manchester City boss Mark Hughes.
The Guardian reports that Al Fayed has sought talks with Mark Hughes over the managerial vacancy at Fulham, as he broadens his search in the wake of the failure to prise Martin Jol from Ajax.

The Fulham chairman also has Sven-Goran Eriksson and Ottmar Hitzfeld on the shortlist to succeed Roy Hodgson, who has left for Liverpool, but he is keen to know whether Hughes, the former Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers and Wales manager, can be tempted before he makes a firm move.

Eriksson, who has the offer of another contract with Ivory Coast on the table, had hoped to hear from Fulham at the weekend to invite him in for discussions.

Palace boss considering signing ex-Fulham keeper

CRYSTAL Palace boss George Burley says he is mulling over offering former Fulham keeper Wes Foderingham a deal.

Bookies tipping Hughes for Fulham post

Former Blackburn and Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has emerged as the bookmakers' favourite to take over at English Premier League club Fulham following the recent departure of Roy Hodgson to Liverpool.

After a distinguished playing career with the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona and Chelsea, Hughes moved into management with Wales in 1999 before progressing into the English Premier League with Blackburn Rovers in 2004. Four years later he was named as the boss of free-spending Manchester City and guided the side to tenth spot during his first season on charge before being sacked seven months later.

SkyBet.com is offering odds of 11/10 on 46-year-old Hughes being named the new manager for Fulham while WilliamHill.com, Bet365.com, BetFred.com, Ladbrokes.com, StanJames.com, VictorChandler.com, Coral.co.uk and PaddyPower.com show 6/4.

Regarded as one of the most talented young British football managers around, Hughes would have to relocate from the northwest of England to London in order to manage Fulham but this may not be a problem considering the rumoured money on offer. BlueSq.com and 888Sport.com shows odds of 7/4 on the Welshman taking over at Craven Cottage while punters can get 19/10 from Betfair.com.

Another name possibly in the running is former England, Mexico and Ivory Coast boss Sven-Goran Eriksson. The Swede already has an offer on the table from the Ivory Coast but is hoping to speak to Fulham Chairman Mohamed Al Fayed about the possibility of a return to management in the English Premier League.

SkyBet.com has the 62-year-old at odds of 13/8 to be named as the latest Fulham manager this season followed by Ladbrokes.com, StanJames.com and PaddyPower.com offering 2/1.

Slightly longer, 888Sport.com, WilliamHill.com, BetFred.com and BlueSq.com are going with 9/4 on Eriksson being the new boss of 'The Cottagers' while bettors can get 5/2 at Coral.co.uk and VictorChandler.com alongside 76/25 from Betfair.com.

Keeper set to stay

Fulham may have missed their chance to cash in on Mark Schwarzer as Arsenal have turned their attentions to Federico Marchetti.

The Gunners have had one bid of £2m for the 37-year-old Schwarzer turned down already with Fulham holding out for closer to £4m but they may not get it now that Marchetti has become available.

Cagliari have put him up for sale but the keeper, who replaced the injured Gianluigi Buffon in Italy's opening World Cup match and then kept the shirt, believes they have priced him out of a move to Sampdoria, who have had an offer turned down.

That leaves the door open for Arsenal who are looking for a new number one after losing patience with Manuel Almunia and seeing offers for Schwarzer turned down.

Aspire 2 Move is a locally-run project delivered by the Fulham Football Club Foundation, targeting young women (between 12 and 21), aiming to involve them in positive activities and get them physically active through dance and sport.

Last season, the Fulham Aspire 2 Move football team entered the national Futsal (South American five-a-side football) regional tournament which was organised for girls aged 14-16.

The girls met some fierce competition on the day but were victorious, winning 3-0 in the final, ultimately qualifying for the National Finals.

Teams from the North West, East Midlands, Wales as well as the Fulham Football Club Foundation Aspire 2 Move team from London competed for the honour of becoming the StreetGames National Futsal champions. The final was hosted at Manchester United FC's prestigious Carrington Road training ground.

The Aspire 2 Move girls team reached the final and beat the Wales One team 2-0, to be crowned girls National Futsal winners for the 09/10 season.

The team had an invaluable experience and deserved recognition for all of their hard work.

Jemima Morris, ProActive West London Partnership Development Manager, commented:

"It was great to see so many girls participating in Futsal and getting involved at a regional and national level. Taking part and copmpeting in sport really helps to build confidence and self esteem, particularly in vulnerable young people and Fulham Football Club is doing some great work with girls to provide them with many sports opportunities."

Mark Hughes close to deal over taking charge of Fulham

Fulham are closing in on naming Mark Hughes as their new manager.

The Cottagers are without a boss as they prepare for the new season after Roy Hodgson's move to Liverpool earlier in the summer.

They suffered a major blow in their bid to replace him with Martin Jol's decision to eventually stay with Ajax over a return to the Barclays Premier League.

But Fulham are now close to unveiling Hughes as their new man despite Sven Goran Eriksson's emergence as a contender.

Hughes has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester City last year but is highly-rated in the game.

Fulham owner Mohammed Al Fayed is keen to sustain Fulham's progress after they went all the way to the Europa League final last season.

Hughes, who initially impressed at City after fine work at Blackburn, is keen to return to management and views Fulham as an ideal post.

However, with just over two weeks until the start of the season, he will have to work quickly in the transfer market if he wants to rebuild their squad.

Fulham Manager - will it be Hughes?
Rumours are growing that Mark Hughes will be the next Fulham manager.

Hughes has been out of work since Manchester City moved him out in order to accommodate Roberto Mancini.

Despite Sven Goran Eriksson's name being bandied about its seems that Hughes is now favourite according to the bookmakers.

SkyBet.com have odds of 11/10 on 46-year-old Hughes being named the new manager.

Ladbrokes.com, StanJames.com,PaddyPower.com and others also have Hughes as favourite ahead of Eriksson.

Whoever takes over though will have to get their skates on with just over 2 weeks to the start of the new season.

GERA MISSES ROY - SKY REPORT  :012:

Fulham forward Zoltan Gera admits he 'misses' Roy Hodgson, following his defection to Liverpool.

Hodgson worked wonders during his time at Craven Cottage, turning the club from relegation fodder into European challengers.

He helped Fulham to the Europa League final last season and cemented their standing as a resolute and competitive Premier League side.

Hodgson's absence around the club will be keenly felt, especially as his successor is yet to be announced, and Gera has revealed that the atmosphere around the place is different since he left.

"Though Roy Hodgson has gone and we still don't have a manager, we have done well in pre-season," the Hungarian playmaker told Pepsifoci.

"I'll miss him very much because he was an unbelievable coach and took us to the Europa League final."

Interesting
Gera accepts that the Hodgson era must now be left in the past and has already turned his attention to the 2010/11 campaign.

He has been deployed as a striker at times during the Cottagers' pre-season plans and hopes he will be given further opportunities alongside Bobby Zamora once the new season gets underway.

"I enjoy playing right behind him," said Gera.

"It's interesting, that I have played as a forward in some games, but when I train I am always on the left or right.

"Why? I think our coaches want to give our strikers more of a chance. I don't mind that and it makes me more determined to play in my favoured position during the matches."

ROBERTO DONADONI IN CONTENTION FOR FULHAM JOB

ROBERTO DONADONI is a surprise contender for the vacant manager's job at Fulham but they insist they won't rush an appointment after failing to land Ajax boss Martin Jol.

The Dutchman was on a shortlist along with former Manchester City managers Mark Hughes and Sven Goran Eriksson.

But Fulham have decided to widen the search and former Italy coach Donadoni is being looked at.

Donadoni, 46, led Italy to the Euro 2008 quarter-finals but he has been out of work since being sacked by Napoli last October.

Cardiff's Dave Jones and former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann have also been linked with the job.

Fulham rule out Bradley and Klinsmann

ULHAM have ruled Bob Bradley and Jurgen Klinsmann out of the running to become their new boss.

The pair have been linked with the vacant manager's hotseat at Craven Cottage since Roy Hodgson left for Liverpool last month.

But Mohamed Al Fayed and chief executive Alistair Mackintosh have dismissed the possibility of USA coach Bradley and German legend Klinsmann taking over in SW6.

A club insider revealed: "There was never any contact with Klinsmann in the first place."
