Gera targets Hungary return
Fulham star meets with new manager

Hungarian midfielder Zoltan Gera wants a return to the international fold, according to international boss Sandor Egervari.

The 31-year-old Fulham player resigned from the national team last year following a fall-out with coach Erwin Koeman, but last week it was announced that Egervari would become the new manager.

Egervari has met with Gera in London and after posistive talks he is expected to return to the Hungary squad to face England in August.

"We were talking through the whole morning and I talked to him about the present situation and outlined him my plans with the team," Egervari told www.origo.hu (http://www.origo.hu).

"Zoli said that there were so many positive changes lately that he'd like to come back to the national team and I'm very happy about it.

"At that time he told the national coach that he doesn't want to play in the team for a while and now he told the national coach (to me) that he wants to play again because of the changed atmosphere."

Former West Brom midfielder Gera has made more than 60 appearances for Hungary and could be given the captain's armband if he returns.

Cottagers move to front of Young queue

Fulham are believed to be leading the race to sign Aston Villa defender Luke Young following the collapse of a move to Liverpool.

Liverpool appeared to be favourites to land the versatile defender after agreeing a deal with Villa, but it is understood that move collapsed as the player does not want to move his family north.

The former Tottenham and Charlton man is believed to be holding out for a move back to the capital as he seeks a switch away from Villa.

Villa are ready to offload Young after he dropped well down the pecking order in Martin O'Neill's plans.

A number of clubs including Sunderland and Fulham are believed to have expressed an interest in the 31-year-old, but the Londoners are favourites for his signature.

Fulham have held a long-term interest in Young and incoming boss Mark Hughes is believed to be ready to push through a deal for the former England international as he looks to bolster the squad at Craven Cottage.

Mark Hughes Appointed as Manager
(http://www.fulhamfc.com/Images/MainNews/NewsPages/Management/Hughes/general1.jpg)

Fulham Football Club has today confirmed the appointment of Mark Hughes as its new Manager on a two year contract. Hughes begins his work with the team immediately, following their return from pre-season tour, and will take charge in the dugout for the friendly fixture against Werder Bremen on August 7, and will be officially unveiled to the media at a press conference on Tuesday August 3.

Mark Hughes' managerial career began with his appointment as the Welsh national coach in 1999. He remained in charge for five years and came close to qualifying for Euro 2004. In their qualifying group Wales beat Italy, but were denied a place in the final tournament after losing to Russia in the playoffs.

Hughes resigned from the Welsh national side in September 2004 to take charge of Blackburn Rovers in the F.A Premier League, the club he finished his playing career with. His aim on appointment was to keep Blackburn clear of relegation which he succeeded in doing, whilst also taking the club to an F.A Cup semi-final for the first time in over 40 years.

In his second season, Blackburn finished in the top six of the Premier League and qualified for the UEFA Cup, beating teams such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal during the campaign. After just missing out on the League Cup final, his team sealed their spot in Europe by defeating champions Chelsea 1–0.
During the 2006–07 season Rovers finished 10th and reached the FA Cup semi-final for the second time under Hughes' tenure, but were defeated by Chelsea 2-1.

In June 2008, Hughes left Blackburn Rovers and was appointed as manager of Manchester City, and finished 10th in his first season with the club, as well as reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. During this period City's home form was among the best in the league. He remained with Manchester City until December 2009, losing only two league games that season, prior to his departure.

The Chairman, Mohamed Al Fayed, said:

'I would like to welcome Mark Hughes to Fulham. I know that he understands my vision for the Club, and believes in what we want achieve.

'We have enjoyed two incredibly successful years, and my hopes and dreams for this club are for that journey to continue. I am confident that with his Premier League and National Team successes, Mark will be a great guy for the job.'

Mark Hughes commented:

'I am happy to have joined Fulham following much speculation regarding the appointment of a new Manager. I have discussed my aspirations with both the Chairman and Alistair Mackintosh and believe that we are aligned in our aims for what can realistically be achieved here.

'I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the Club's history, and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition. I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this Club forward in the right direction.

'I hope the Fulham fans will enjoy some special times during this season's campaign and we will work hard to achieve that. I'm looking forward to working with the squad as soon as possible, and in making sure the on-pitch preparations are complete before the first competitive ball is kicked in August.'

Fulham appoint Hughes
Welshman agrees two-year deal at Craven Cottage

Fulham have appointed former Manchester City boss Mark Hughes as their new manager at Craven Cottage.

Hughes has agreed a two-year deal to succeed Roy Hodgson at the West London club.

Hodgson left Fulham earlier this summer to take charge at Liverpool and Fulham have been linked with a number of names as they searched for a replacement.

Former Tottenham boss Martin Jol was the favourite for the role after Fulham made an approach to Ajax for his services, but the Dutch side rejected their overtures.

Sven-Goran Eriksson and Dave Jones were both mooted as contenders for the job, but Fulham have decided to go with Welshman Hughes.

Hughes has been out of work since being sacked as Manchester City boss in December 2009 and he is relishing the prospect of taking charge at Craven Cottage.

Aspirations

"I am happy to have joined Fulham following much speculation regarding the appointment of a new manager. I have discussed my aspirations with both the Chairman and Alistair Mackintosh and believe that we are aligned in our aims for what can realistically be achieved here," he told the club's official website.

"I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the club's history, and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition.

"I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward in the right direction.

"I hope the Fulham fans will enjoy some special times during this season's campaign and we will work hard to achieve that. I'm looking forward to working with the squad as soon as possible, and in making sure the on-pitch preparations are complete before the first competitive ball is kicked in August."

Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed welcomed the appointment of the former Blackburn boss and believes he is the right man to lead the club forward.

"I would like to welcome Mark Hughes to Fulham. I know that he understands my vision for the club, and believes in what we want achieve," he added.

"We have enjoyed two incredibly successful years, and my hopes and dreams for this club are for that journey to continue. I am confident that with his Premier League and National Team successes, Mark will be a great guy for the job."

The 46-year-old will take charge of Fulham for the first time in pre-season friendly with Werder Bremen on 7th August.

Hughes reign begins at Fulham

Mark Hughes was tonight confirmed as Fulham's new manager after agreeing a two-year deal.

Fulham had been seeking a replacement for Roy Hodgson since he swapped Craven Cottage for Anfield earlier this summer, and failed in a bid to prise Martin Jol from Ajax.

Former Manchester City boss Hughes emerged as the frontrunner after talks with the Dutchman ran their course, and he will begin work at the club immediately, taking charge of his first match in the friendly meeting with Werder Bremen on 7 August.

Hughes acknowledged the success Hodgson enjoyed at the club - most notably taking them to the UEFA Europa League final last season - but has already set out his own blueprint for taking them forward.

I hope the Fulham fans will enjoy some special times during this season's campaign and we will work hard to achieve that.

Hughes told the club's official website: "I have discussed my aspirations with both the chairman and (chief executive) Alistair Mackintosh and believe that we are aligned in our aims for what can realistically be achieved here.

"I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the club's history and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition," he went on. "I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward in the right direction.

"I hope the Fulham fans will enjoy some special times during this season's campaign and we will work hard to achieve that," Hughes added. Mark Schwarzer: I want to join Arsenal! New Fulham boss Mark Hughes is ready to swoop for West Ham keeper Robert Green

Mark Schwarzer remains determined to quit Fulham for Arsenal despite the appointment of Mark Hughes as manager at Craven Cottage.

Hughes' appointment on a two-year deal was confirmed by Fulham on Thursday and the former Wales, Blackburn and Manchester City manager will be in the stands to watch his new side take on Portsmouth on Saturday before being officially unveiled on Tuesday.

Hughes will earn £2million a year before performance - related bonuses and has been allowed to bring in his coaching team of Mark Bowen, Eddie Niedzwiecki and Kevin Hitchcock.

Fulham's caretaker manager, Ray Lewington, will stay at the club in a coaching capacity.

But despite the arrival of the new managerial team, Schwarzer, 37, has his heart set on bringing down the curtain down on his career at Arsenal meaning Hughes must decide whether to sanction a deal to sign West Ham keeper Robert Green.

Fulham have already rejected a £2million offer from Arsenal for Schwarzer who they value at double that amount.

A compromise deal is likely to be struck, however, and Hughes must decide whether to use that cash and a slice of his £20m transfer kitty to land Green who is valued in the £6m bracket by West Ham despite his howler for England in the World Cup.

Hughes must also decide whether to finalise a £2m deal for Aston Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell which has been on the back burner for several weeks as Fulham sought a replacement for Roy Hodgson.

The new Fulham manager has transfer targets of his own, of course, and unsurprisingly the names of Craig Bellamy, Stephen Ireland, and even Roque Santa Cruz feature on his shopping list given he brought the trio to Eastlands.

The trio are all available as City set about trimming their squad to the require figure of 25 for the coming Barclays Premier League campaign.

But Hughes will face competition from Spurs for Bellamy after Sportsmail revealed that Harry Redknapp had made a cheeky £4m bid while he would need to take a considerable in his £95,000-a-week wages to move to either side.

In addition, the Wales striker has told Roberto Mancini of his desire to stay at Eastlands despite clashing with the City manager last season, but it remains to be seen whether he will make the cut.

Ireland's relationship with Hughes certainly boosts Fulham's chances but a reported price tag of £10m and interest from bigger clubs are significant stumbling blocks.

And Santa Cruz's valuation and wage packet means a loan move is Hughes' only realistic chance of a reunion with the Paraguay striker.

Away from City, Luke Young's decision to back out of a move from Aston Villa to Liverpool over fears of a lack of first team action could encourage Hughes to make a move.

FULHAM 13/8 FOR TOP HALF FINISH

Fulham are 13/8 with Sky Bet to finish the 2010/11 Premier League season in the top half under new manager Mark Hughes.

The former Manchester City manager was confirmed as Roy Hodgson's successor at Craven Cottage on Thursday night having been out of football since December.

Hughes' new team narrowly missed out on silverware last term when they lost the Europa League final and are 16/1 with the online bookmaker to lift a trophy in Hughes' first season.

The Cottagers are 16/1 to beat Hodgson's new team Liverpool in both Premier League games this season, and 12/1 to do the double over London rivals Tottenham.

Hughes' first league game in charge of Fulham will be against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium on August 14.

They are 2/1 to claim maximum points from their opening fixture, while Bolton are 6/5 and the draw is on offer at 9/4 with Sky Bet.

Fulham are 20/1 to finish next season in the Premier League's top six, and 40/1 to secure one of the Champions League spots.

Sky Bet Football Compiler Joe Petyt said: "Hughes will have his work cut out matching Roy Hodgson's achievements at Craven Cottage but he's proven in the Premier League and always looked the logical appointment after Martin Jol was ruled out.

"After a disappointing end to his time at Man City I'm sure he'll be determined to succeed"

Hughes takes charge of Fulham

Mark Hughes is looking forward to "the challenges of expectation and ambition" at Fulham FC after being named the new manager of last season's UEFA Europa League runners-up.

Last season's UEFA Europa League runners-up Fulham FC have appointed Mark Hughes as their new manager on a two-year contract.

Fulham suffered a 2-1 extra-time defeat by Club Atlético de Madrid in the inaugural UEFA Europa League final in May and subsequently lost manager Roy Hodgson to Liverpool FC on 1 July. They have now filled that void with former Manchester United FC, FC Barcelona and Chelsea FC striker Hughes, who left the Manchester City FC helm in December. "I would like to welcome Mark Hughes to Fulham," said Cottagers chairman Mohamed Al Fayed. "I know he understands my vision for the club, and believes in what we want to achieve."

Hughes, also formerly manager of Wales and Blackburn Rovers FC, added: "I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the club's history, and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition. I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward in the right direction. Mark Hughes the right man to take Fulham forward

Mark Hughes has been selected as the man to build upon the foundations laid by Roy Hodgson at Craven Cottage. The Welshman is the correct choice as it leaves Fulham in capable and ambitious hands.

Whoever ended up at the helm, an unenviable task was always going to await the Cottagers' next manager. Replacing the popular and successful Hodgson is an almost impossible undertaking.

But it now falls to Hughes to stamp his own identity upon the club and a British manager was a sensible choice.

The time it would take Roberto Donadoni to settle into English football and the media circus which would follow Sven-Göran Eriksson made them both unsuitable options.

The foreign candidates which lay at Chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed's disposal such as Donadoni and Eriksson may have added glamour to the modest surroundings at Craven Cottage, but there would be no guarantee of instant success.

Vitally, Hughes has Premier League experience in abundance. He worked under tight financial constraints at Blackburn Rovers with an average squad and displayed a sharp eye for a bargain—the signing of Roque Santa Cruz a testament to his talent-spotting ability.

Other acute acquisitions include Bennie McCarthy for £2 million, Christopher Samba for a measley £400,000 and Stephen Warnock, who was prised from Liverpool for £1.5 million.

It bodes well for Fulham fans who have become accustomed to bargain purchases for small fees.

And a quick glance at his record in the League shows that Hughes breeds success. For a club with moderate funds, under the guidance of the former Manchester United forward, Blackburn finished 14th, 6th, 10th and 7th.

Similar to Blackburn, Fulham will not be expected to challenge the financial mite of the top six clubs. Thus they will look towards lengthy campaigns in the domestic cup competitions to provide chances of silverware.

During Hughes' four-year spell at Ewood Park, Blackburn reached three consecutive FA Cup semi-finals. Additionally, in the League Cup, Manchester United narrowly defeated Hughes' side in the semi-finals in 2005-06.

Al-Fayed has a reputation as a difficult chairman to work with. Yet Hughes dealt admirably with the weight of expectation that he shouldered during his time at Manchester City.

His eventual dismissal from Eastlands was met with outrage throughout the Premier League. The facts showed Hughes was a mere six points away from the objective demanded by the City hierarchy: fourth place.

Fulham's style of football has improved in recent years under Hodgson and it would be folly to suggest that the great European nights, such the magical performance against Juventus, will be instantly replicated by Hughes.

Yet the Welsh manager's passion will propel Fulham to continued success. And it is not unforeseeable that Fulham will grace a domestic cup final in coming seasons with the good times at Craven Cottage looking set to continue.

Mark Hughes relishing Fulham role

MARK Hughes has vowed to continue the success story at Craven Cottage after being confirmed as the new Fulham boss this evening.

The Welshman fought off the challenge of Sven-Goran Eriksson to become Roy Hodgson's successor when he penned a two-year deal in SW6.

Hodgson led Fulham to a top-10 finish and a Europa League final in his two full seasons in charge of the club.

But Hughes insists the Whites can get even better.

He said: "I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the club's history, and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition.

"I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move the club forward in the right direction."

Mark Hughes becomes new Fulham boss: Sparky pens two-year deal at Craven Cottage

Mark Hughes was confirmed as Fulham's new manager after agreeing a two-year deal.

Fulham had been seeking a replacement for Roy Hodgson since he swapped Craven Cottage for Anfield earlier this summer, and failed in a bid to prise Martin Jol from Ajax.

Former Manchester City boss Hughes emerged as the frontrunner after talks with the Dutchman ran their course, and he will begin work at the club immediately, taking charge of his first match in the friendly meeting with Werder Bremen on August 7.

'I'm looking forward to working with the squad as soon as possible, and in making sure the on-pitch preparations are complete before the first competitive ball is kicked in August.'

Hughes, who will be presented to the media on Tuesday, began his transition from highly-decorated player to manager when he took charge of the Welsh national team in 1999.

He won praise for his efforts in the role, although he could not quite steer them to the major championships the nation desired.

He resigned his post in 2004, taking over at the club where he had ended his playing days, Blackburn.

From there he was appointed Manchester City boss, enjoying an 18-month stay at Eastlands during which he had greatly increased funds but also hugely inflated expectations.

The latter eventually proved his undoing and he has been out of work since leaving City in December.

His new employer, chairman Mohammad Al Fayed, said: 'I would like to welcome Mark Hughes to Fulham. I know that he understands my vision for the club, and believes in what we want achieve.

'We have enjoyed two incredibly successful years, and my hopes and dreams for this club are for that journey to continue. I am confident that with his Premier League and national team successes Mark will be a great guy for the job.'

Fulham's Mark Hughes plans to hijack Tottenham's bid for Craig Bellamy
• Hughes makes deal priority after signing two-year contract
• Bellamy previously signed by Hughes at Blackburn and City

Mark Hughes will attempt to scupper Tottenham Hotspur's move for Craig Bellamy after he was confirmed as Fulham's new manger. Hughes has signed a two-year deal as Roy Hodgson's successor at Craven Cottage and he will make Bellamy, the Manchester City striker, one of his top transfer targets.

Ray Lewington, who has been in caretaker charge since Hodgson's departure, has been retained on the coaching staff.

Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, has a long-standing interest in Bellamy, having tried to sign him in January of last year from West Ham United only for the player to move to Eastlands for £14m. Redknapp is aware the City manager Roberto Mancini has to slim down his squad to 25 senior players to comply with this season's regulations and he hopes to exploit the situation with a bid for Bellamy. Redknapp also wants the City defender Micah Richards.

But Hughes has a close relationship with Bellamy, having worked with him during his first managerial job in charge of Wales; taken him to Blackburn Rovers from Newcastle United in the summer of 2005 for £5m and then signed him for City. Although Bellamy's weekly wage might represent a stumbling block, Hughes would like to buy him for the third time. Bellamy, 31, has played for eight clubs during his career and has had £45m spent on him in transfer fees. Hughes is also interested in another two of his former City players, the midfielder Stephen Ireland and the striker Roque Santa Cruz.

Hughes acknowledged the success Hodgson enjoyed at Fulham – most notably taking them to the Europa League final last season – but has already set out his own blueprint for taking them forward.

Hughes said on the club's website: "I have discussed my aspirations with the chairman [Mohamed Al Fayed] and [the chief executive] Alistair Mackintosh and believe that we are aligned in our aims for what can realistically be achieved here. I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the club's history and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition.

"I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward. I hope the Fulham fans will enjoy some special times during this season's campaign."

Redknapp himself would not be drawn on the Bellamy deal last night. "I like Craig Bellamy but I don't know if they [City] would sell him," said Redknapp after Spurs' 4-1 friendly defeat by Villarreal. "The chairman deals with all the transfers. He asks me what I want and I tell him. I don't know where he's at with Bellamy, if anywhere."

Schwarzer still keen to quit Fulham for Arsenal

Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is reportedly still keen to quit the club to make a dream move to Arsenal.

The 37-year old Australian veteran has been linked heavily with the Gunners for much of the European summer and reports emanating from the UK suggest he is still determined to land at Emirates Stadium.

Fulham are set to announce ex-Manchester City manager Mark Hughes as their replacement for Roy Hodgson and that is set to spark some transfer action out of Craven Cottage as there will now be a man in place to make decisions.

West Ham United's Robert Green is being earmarked as Schwarzer's replacement despite his gaffe for England at the World Cup but the decision is likely to rest with Hughes who may have final call on whether or not Schwarzer gets to end his career with one of England's 'big four'.

Mark Hughes admits he's got his work cut out at Fulham

Fulham come in for Villa's Young

Fulham have joined Liverpool in the queue for Aston Villa defender Luke Young.

The Reds appeared to be the only club interested in the 31-year old right-back but Fulham have now made their intentions clear by expressing considerable interest.

Reports suggest Young does not want to head north and would rather return to London where he had stints with Tottenham and Charlton Athletic.

Incoming Cottagers boss Mark Hughes is believed to be keen on Young and is expected to push through a deal when he arrives in the Craven Cottage hot seat.

Mark Hughes is new Fulham manager

Mark Hughes is to become to new Fulham manager.

The Cottagers stopped short of confirming that Hughes was their choice, but they are now close to announcing his arrival as successor to Roy Hodgson.

Hughes is believed to have reached an agreement on a two-year contract with the club.

He is likely to be given around £15million to spend on players by Mohamed Al-Fayed and he will link up again with chief executive Alistair Mackintosh, with whom he worked closely during his time at City.

Among the players being linked with a move to Fulham is City striker Craig Bellamy.

Hughes took Welshman Bellamy to both Blackburn and City and, although wages may present a problem for the Cottagers, it is understood Bellamy is a genuine target.

Hughes right for Fulham - Hodgson

Former Fulham manager Roy Hodgson believes Mark Hughes is an excellent choice to succeed him at Craven Cottage.

The Cottagers have confirmed the appointment of the ex-Wales, Blackburn and Manchester City boss on a two-year deal.

Hodgson, who led Fulham to the Europa League final last season, created the vacancy when he left the London club for Liverpool last month.

Speaking after the Reds' Europa League qualifier against FK Rabotnicki in Macedonia on Thursday night, Hodgson said: "It is a good appointment.

"I am very pleased for him and Fulham Football Club.

"I think Mark is a very good manager and he has proved his worth many times.

"It is good Fulham have got such an experienced man to take over.

"I think he will enjoy working at Fulham because it is a fantastic club with fantastic people and magnificent players.

"I wish him well, but not too well when he plays against us - but I know he will do well."

Mark Hughes up for the challenge after being confirmed as Fulham's new manager
Mark Hughes fearless as he prepares for latest challenge after signing two-year deal with Fulham to become the successor to Roy Hodgson.

Although he stands at a relatively modest 5ft 10in, throughout Hughes's career he has made a habit of filling big shoes.

As a 20 year-old at Manchester United, he took Norman Whiteside's place in the United front line. A quarter of a century later, he replaced the formidable Sven-Goran Eriksson at Eastlands. Now, in taking the reins at Craven Cottage, he is following one of the most successful acts in Fulham's history.

Say what you like about Hughes, but he could never be accused of shirking a challenge.

Last night Hughes was confirmed as Fulham's replacement for Hodgson and he will be presented at a press conference next Tuesday.

The 46-year-old Welshman has signed a two-year deal, ending owner Mohamed Fayed and chief executive Alistair Mackintosh's month-long search for a man capable of emulating Hodgson's achievement of a top-seven Premier League finish and a European final.

Fulham were disappointed at failing to land their preferred option after Martin Jol was unable to break free of his shackles at Ajax. But tempting Hughes to Craven Cottage, rejecting names such as Eriksson and Cardiff manager Dave Jones, will hearten Fulham fans who feared that in hiring their second choice, they would be forced to settle for second best.

In the circumstances, Hughes's signing is a considerable coup.

"I know that he understands my vision for the club, and believes in what we want achieve," said Fayed last night. "We have enjoyed two incredibly successful years, and my hopes and dreams for this club are for that journey to continue. I am confident that with his Premier League and national team successes, Mark will be a great guy for the job."

For his part, Hughes has evidently judged that this is the right moment to make his re-entry, seven months after falling victim to Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan's bloodless coup. Since finding himself unemployed, he will not have been short on offers – Hull City and Turkey were among the potential suitors – but clearly needed a little time away from the game.

'I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the Club's history, and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition," Hughes said. "I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward in the right direction."

There were also words of encouragement last night from Hodgson. "I am very pleased for Mark and the club. He has proved his worth already many times."

A number of transfers had been put on hold by the limbo at Fulham. They have reached an agreement with Aston Villa over a £2 million move for midfielder Steve Sidwell, while Arsenal want to sign goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer. Paul Konchesky may well follow Hodgson to Liverpool, providing Hughes can secure a replacement before the start of the season – likely to be Aston Villa's Nicky Shorey.

A phone call to his old employers at Eastlands may be Hughes's first move. There are deals to be had among City's disaffected, and Hughes is expected to be handed a transfer budget of around £15 million. Roque Santa Cruz could make Fulham the third club at which he has worked under Hughes, along with Stephen Ireland, neglected by the current regime.

Craig Bellamy would be the most ambitious move of all, as Fulham would have to stave off interest from Tottenham.

In any case, those Fulham supporters expecting continuity with the Hodgson era underestimate Hughes's determination to assert his identity on his teams. He did it at Blackburn, where he dismantled a struggling team and bought – at very little expense – an entirely new one. David Bentley, Ryan Nelsen and Stephen Warnock were all testament to Hughes's instinct and eye for a bargain.

Hughes's reserved style constitutes a marked break from the loquacious Hodgson. As a man and as a manager, Hughes has preferred to keep his counsel, delegating heavily to the backroom staff that is expected to follow him through the door.

Deputy and long-time confidant Mark Bowen, goalkeeping coach Kevin Hitchcock and first-team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki, all of whom worked with him at Manchester City, will all be at Fulham. Ray Lewington, Hodgson's lieutenant who has been in temporary charge of the team, has been assured of a place at the club and is likely to remain.

"Mark's quiet, but he can be tough as well. With the team he has around him, he makes it work," says Ian Rush, an international team-mate for more than a decade. "He makes sure he knows the players he's dealing with inside out. And he's done well everywhere he's been."

Viv Anderson played with Hughes at Old Trafford for three years, and believes it is Hughes's attention to detail that is his strongest attribute. "He studies videos, he uses a lot of technology and statistics, and he takes things on board very quickly. He's a really top coach," he said.

Mark Hughes factfile:

United hero
Hughes joined Manchester United in 1980 at the age of 16, but had to wait three years to make his debut. He quickly established himself, though, winning Young Player of the Year in 1985.

Spain pain
Barcelona manager Terry Venables signed Hughes for a British record £2.3 million, hoping to team him up with Gary Lineker. Instead, Hughes struggled, failing to nail down a place in the side, and was lent out to Bayern Munich after a season.

Red again
Hughes returned to Old Trafford just as Alex Ferguson was crafting his first great dynasty and won seven trophies in as many years.

Perhaps his most memorable contribution was a last-minute scissor kick to win the 1994 FA Cup semi-final against Oldham. He left in 1995, but continued playing for another seven years at Chelsea, Southampton, Everton and Blackburn.

Welsh terrier
It took less than 20 minutes for Hughes to score for Wales, but in almost 20 years as player and manager, he never went to a major international tournament. Euro 2004 play-off defeat to Russia was the closest he got.

Destination Ewood
Hughes walked out on Wales to join Blackburn in 2004 and steered them clear of relegation before moulding them into a top six side and taking them into Europe.

Getting the blues
At Manchester City, Hughes was given one of the fattest chequebooks in Premier League history. Robinho, Barry and Adebayor were among the talent brought into Eastlands, but with a top four place in the balance, he was sacked by the club's Abu Dhabi owners.

Fulham Set To Take Legal Action Against PL Chairman

Fulham will reportedly take legal action against Premier League chairman Sir Dave Richards for being involved in Peter Crouch's transfer from Portsmouth to Tottenham.

The Cottagers believe Richards helped Spurs do the £9m deal last July and are so irate about missing out on him that they want investigations into the transfer.

Fulham believe they had tied up an £11m deal with Pompey for the striker and are in no doubt that the situation altered when Richards became intertwined.

A source confirmed to SunSport: "Fulham believed Crouch was theirs. They were staggered when he joined Spurs for £2m less than they offered."

Mark Hughes named new manager of Premier League Fulham

Mark Hughes has been confirmed as Fulham's new manager, signing a two-year deal with the west London club.

Hughes, 46, had been out of work since being sacked by Manchester City in December 2009 and replaces Roy Hodgson.

"I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the club's history," he told the Fulham website.

"I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward in the right direction."

The Welshman will be unveiled as manager on 3 August and his first match in charge will be a friendly against Werder Bremen four days later.

BBC Sport understands that he has been successful in securing positions for his trusted backroom team of Mark Bowen, Kevin Hitchcock and Eddie Niedzwiecki, who all worked with him at City.

606: DEBATE
What is the style of play under Hughes? At Blackburn, it was all a bit hoof ball. However, at Manchester City it was quite nice, passing football
Uncle Roy

But that raises a question mark over the position of Fulham's first-team coach Ray Lewington, who was caretaker manager after Hodgson left for Liverpool earlier this month.

It is also believed that Hughes will look to tempt out-of-favour City players to London, including Craig Bellamy, Roque Santa Cruz and Stephen Ireland.

"I have discussed my aspirations with both the chairman [Mohamed Al Fayed] and Alistair Mackintosh [chief executive, with whom he worked at City] and believe that we are aligned in our aims for what can realistically be achieved here," said Hughes.

"I hope the Fulham fans will enjoy some special times during this season's campaign and we will work hard to achieve that."
He added: "I'm looking forward to working with the squad as soon as possible, and in making sure the on-pitch preparations are complete before the first competitive ball is kicked in August."

Hughes, a former Manchester United, Barcelona and Chelsea striker, began his managerial career with Wales in 1999. He took them to the brink of qualification for Euro 2004, only to denied by a play-off loss to Russia.

I know that he understands my vision for the club
Chairman Mohamed Al Fayed

He was appointed by City in 2008 but the club's change of ownership and hugely increased budget and level of expectation meant he only had 18 months in the job before he was replaced by Roberto Mancini.

At Fulham, he will work with more modest resources but will inherit a side left in good shape by Hodgson.

Last season, Hodgson guided the Cottagers on a memorable Europa League campaign, which ended when they lost in the final to Atletico Madrid.

Fulham had attempted to recruit Ajax coach Martin Jol but were forced to look elsewhere when the Dutch club refused to let the former Tottenham manager leave.

However, Cottagers chairman Mohamed Al Fayed described Hughes as "a great guy".

Al Fayed added: "I know that he understands my vision for the club and believes in what we want to achieve.

"We have enjoyed two incredibly successful years and my hopes and dreams for this club are for that journey to continue."

Hughes's first Premier League game in charge of Fulham will be away to Bolton on 14 August. The Cottagers will then host Manchester United on 22 August.

New Fulham boss Mark Hughes targets Man City trio in squad shake up

Mark Hughes signed a two-year deal as Fulham boss last night – and will now have to work fast ahead of the transfer deadline.

Among his priorities will be moves for Manchester City pair Stephen Ireland and Craig Bellamy.

Ireland was outstanding at City for Hughes, while Bellamy has played some of his best football under his fellow Welshman – for City, Blackburn and Wales – but is also a target for Tottenham.

Both players are surplus to requirements at Eastlands, and Hughes could even move for City's Paraguay international Roque Santa Cruz, who impressed under the Welshman at Rovers.

Aston Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell, 27, agreed terms on a £2million move to Craven Cottage three weeks ago, pending a medical, and 'Sparky' must decide whether to go ahead with the deal.

And Villa team-mate Luke Young is holding out for a move to Fulham after rejecting Liverpool after the clubs had agreed a £2.5m fee.

Hughes will also have to ease uncertainty within the squad over the futures of NINE senior Fulham players with just a year left on their contracts.

They include 33-year-old skipper Danny Murphy and keeper Mark Schwarzer, who was the subject of a rejected £2m bid by Arsenal.

Hughes said: "I'm joining Fulham on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the club's history and that in itself brings with it the ch allenges of expectation and ambition.

"I'm confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward."

Mark Hughes keen to take Fulham in right direction

Mark Hughes could be set to raid his old club after being confirmed as Fulham's new manager.

Hughes has agreed a two-year deal with the Cottagers to become the successor to Roy Hodgson.

Fulham's failure to prise Martin Jol from Ajax left Hughes in pole position and the former Manchester City boss will begin work at the club immediately.

He will take charge of his first match in a friendly against Werder Bremen on August 7 and be unveiled to the media next Tuesday.

But the most immediate task for Hughes will be to bring in fresh blood to a Fulham squad honed superbly by Hodgson before his departure for Liverpool.

He will also appoint his own regular backroom staff that includes assistant Mark Bowen, Kevin Hitchcock and Eddie Niedzwiecki.

Fulham's first-team coach Ray Lewington, who was caretaker manager following Hodgson's departure to Liverpool, is expected to stay after being assured there is a place for him at Craven Cottage. Goalkeeping coach Mike Kelly is expected to leave for Liverpool.

Hughes acknowledged Hodgson's success, most notably taking them to the Europa League final last season, but declared that he already has a vision for the next stage of Fulham's future.

"I have discussed my aspirations with both the chairman and (chief executive) Alistair Mackintosh and believe that we are aligned in our aims for what can realistically be achieved here," Hughes told the club's official website.

"I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward in the right direction.

"I'm looking forward to working with the squad as soon as possible, and making sure the on-pitch preparations are complete before the first competitive ball is kicked in August."

But Hughes faces a number of dilemmas. Firstly, goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is a target for Arsenal and Hughes will need to pull out all the stops to persuade him to stay.

Left-back Paul Konchesky has also been linked with a move to Liverpool while Hughes will turn to former club Manchester City to try and land Craig Bellamy, Stephen Ireland and Roque Santa Cruz.

Hughes began his transition from a highly-decorated player to successful manager when he took charge of the Welsh national team in 1999.

He won praise for his efforts in the role, although he could not quite steer them to the major championships the nation desired.

He resigned his post in 2004, taking over at the club where he had ended his playing days, Blackburn.

From there he was appointed boss of Manchester City but despite pushing the club into the top six, the aspirations changed when Abu Dhabi United Group took charge.

The takeover made City the richest club in the world but even though Hughes spent heavily on players, the progress was not considered good enough and he was sacked last December.

Hughes set to provide spark for Fulham at Fratton

Mark Hughes is expected to lead out Fulham for the first time when they visit Fratton Park tomorrow.
The former Wales manager has been named as Roy Hodgson's successor at Craven Cottage.

That will put him in line to take his new side to Pompey tomorrow for Linvoy Primus' testimonial.

The 46-year-old has been out of work since being sacked as Manchester City boss in December 2009.

Fulham had wanted to recruit Ajax coach Martin Jol to replace Roy Hodgson, who left earlier this month to take charge at Liverpool.

However, they were forced to look elsewhere when the Dutch club refused to let the former Spurs manager leave.

That put Hughes in the frame along with Sven-Goran Eriksson – but the Welshman has emerged triumphant.

Last season, Hodgson guided the Cottagers on a memorable Europa League campaign, which ended when they lost in the final to Atletico Madrid.

The arrival of Hughes will almost certainly be followed by a reshuffle of the backroom staff at Craven Cottage.

First-team coach Ray Lewington, currently caretaker manager following Hodgson's departure, has been linked with a move to Anfield but looks set to stay at Fulham.

However, Hughes is expected to bring in his own regular backroom staff including Mark Bowen, Kevin Hitchcock and Eddie Niedzwiecki.

Former Blackburn boss Hughes will also link up again with chief executive Alistair Mackintosh, who he worked with during his time at Manchester City.

SPARKY GETS GOING STRAIGHT AWAY

So Mark Hughes is the new Fulham manager, in a move that more or less everyone will nod their heads and say 'Yeah, that fits'.

And according to The Daily Mirror, he's getting to work straight away on bringing some old friends with him to the Cottage.

The paper reports he will move straight away for Manchester City trio Stephen Ireland, Craig Bellamy and Roque Santa Cruz.

So far, so predictable.

Steve Sidwell also apparently agreed a deal to move before Sparky's appointment, and is just waiting for the new man's nod before that one goes through.

However, an interesting line in The Mirror's story is that Luke Young is 'holding out' for Fulham, after turning down Liverpool.

Annoyingly, they don't tell us why he said no, but 'sitting on a slightly different bench' is probably a decent bet.

AH! HERE'S WHY
Silly Gossip Column. Being so naive and all that.

According to The Daily Star, the move is off after Young refused to take a £10,000-a-week pay cut.

They say that Young was offered a £37k deal, but said no dice. Now, after taking off our socks to count on our toes, we've worked out that means he's on £47k at Aston Villa.

£47k!

All this stuff about Hughes being our next manager must be true.

Not only is it in the leading, most thoughtful publications (Sun, Mirror, etc), my daughter woke me up at some ungodly hour to say that it had been on the telly too.

Welcome Mr Hughes sir, may your reign here be a long and successful one.

New Fulham boss Hughes plans City raid

Mark Hughes is planning a raid on the Blues to take Roque Santa Cruz, Stephen Ireland and Craig Bellamy to his new club Fulham.

Hughes took over at Craven Cottage last night on a two-year deal, seven months after he was sacked by City.

The Welshman brought Bellamy and Santa Cruz to Eastlands, having previously signed them during his time in charge at Blackburn.

And both, along with Academy graduate Ireland, look surplus to requirements at City as Roberto Mancini looks to trim his squad.

Mancini, who replaced Hughes, is ready to sell left-back Javier Garrido to Lazio for £2.5m, while Stoke are understood to have also made contact with the Blues over Santa Cruz.

Tottenham are interested in Bellamy, although they are only prepared to offer around £4m for the 31-year-old – a third of the price City paid West Ham for him 18 months ago.

But City have stalled in their bid to sign England midfielder James Milner. Aston Villa are refusing to budge from their £30m asking price, which the Blues feel is far too much.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill is under no great pressure to sell, and has taken Milner to Portugal with the club for a pre-season tournament this weekend.

The Blues, though, are close to signing Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli for £24m. Mino Raiola, the 19-year-old's agent, has been to Manchester to try to sort out contract negotiations.

Mancini, who gave Balotelli his debut when he was in charge at Inter, is certain the striker will be a big success in the Premier League.

"Good players do well wherever they play and he can demonstrate his value in England," said Mancini.

"As a player, I like him. I gave him his debut in Serie A because he has talent and like many of the Inter players I know him well.

"It's not true he has a difficult character – at that age everybody has made mistakes. Mario is a good lad."

Fulham chairman Al Fayed delighted with Hughes arrival

Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed is delighted with the arrival of new manager Mark Hughes.

Al Fayed said: "I would like to welcome Mark Hughes to Fulham. I know that he understands my vision for the club, and believes in what we want achieve.

"We have enjoyed two incredibly successful years, and my hopes and dreams for this club are for that journey to continue. I am confident that with his Premier League and national team successes Mark will be a great guy for the job."

Petrov hopeful pair will stay
Villa skipper keen for Sidwell and Reo-Coker to remain

Aston Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov wants Steven Sidwell and Nigel Reo-Coker to remain at the club.

Sidwell has been linked with a switch to Fulham while Reo-Coker is reportedly keen to guarantee himself regular first-team football.

Petrov, though, is hopeful the pair will stay at Villa Park having built up a rapport with the players over the years.

He said in the Daily Star: "They have showed that they've got a very good attitude.

"Even when they weren't playing. Every time when the manager picked them to play they tried their best and he knows that.

"We would love them to stay because they're good players, but the manager has a different opinion.

"The manager is trying to bring in new faces and to let some people go.

"But even if we stay the way we are, we have still got a team to compete because every player in our team is a good player. Some people may leave and other people will come in.

"It's hard to see when you've played with somebody for three or four years and you've gone through a lot of hard work all that time to see them leaving, but that's the way football goes."

Fulham steal in for Villa's Luke Young

Fulham were today poised to capitalise on the collapse of Villa defender Luke Young's proposed move to Liverpool.

The Cottagers, who appointed Mark Hughes as their new manager last night, are keen on the out-of-favour Villa right-back, who is available for £2.5million.

Fulham's interest in the former England international dates back to when Hodgson was manager at Craven Cottage and they will have been encouraged by the former Tottenham player's reluctance to relocate to the north.

Liverpool had agreed a £2.5million deal with Villa on Tuesday but it's believed the player was unable to agree personal terms.

Young is now expected to be involved in Villa's Guadiana Cup games against Feyenoord and Benfica over the weekend in Portugal after playing just one game in pre-season to date, against Basingstoke.

Despite being one of the most popular players at the club, Young found himself out of favour at Villa last season after centre-back Carlos Cuellar was preferred in his specialist right-back position.

Young was restricted to just 14 Premier League starts.

He is one of six players – Habib Beye, Nigel Reo-Coker, Curtis Davies, Steve Sidwell and Nicky Shorey are the others – who have been made available for transfer this summer by Villa, who must adopt a sell-to-buy policy this summer.

Villa, meanwhile, will refrain from rushing James Collins back into action as the injured defender fights to be fit to face West Ham on the opening day.

Collins has travelled out to Portugal with the rest of Villa's squad  despite pulling up with a calf problem, just 30 seconds into Tuesday's friendly victory over Walsall.

The Welshman, who has endured a stop-start pre-season after missing the Bohemians friendly with the same problem, did not train yesterday and is a major doubt for the weekend games.

He now faces a race against time to be ready for his old club in Villa's Premier League curtain raiser a fortnight tomorrow – but the club will take a softly, softly approach.

Fulham's Mark Schwarzer still keen on Arsenal move despite Mark Hughes' arrival
Mark Schwarzer is still determined to complete a move to Arsenal despite the arrival of new Fulham boss Mark Hughes.

However, the new appointment has not swayed the 37-year-old Australian goalkeeper, who is still keen to seal a move to the Emirates.

Schwarzer has been one of many goalkeepers linked with Arsenal as manager Arsene Wenger is keen to find a new number one after losing faith in Manuel Almunia.

Fulham have already rejected a £2 million approach from Arsenal for the shot-stopper, with the London club apparently reluctant to improve on this offer.

Arsenal have also been linked with Dutch World Cup goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and Cagliari's Federico Marchetti.

If Hughes does decide to let Schwarzer leave, then West Ham and England goalkeeper Robert Green is being touted as a possible replacement.

Green is valued at around the £6 million mark, with Hughes given a £20 million transfer kitty to build on the squad left by Roy Hodgson before he decided to take on managerial duties at Liverpool.

Hughes also faces a decision over whether to finalise a contract with Aston Villa over midfielder Steve Sidwell.

A £2 million deal has been in the pipeline for some weeks as Fulham waited to appoint a replacement for Hodgson.

Many of Hughes' old players at Manchester City including Craig Bellamy, Steven Ireland and Roque Santa Cruz have also been linked with moves to Craven Cottage.

Baggies lead Pantsil chase
New-boys looking to land Ghana international

Skysports.com understands that Premier League new-boys West Brom are leading the chase for Fulham's Ghana international defender John Pantsil.

The 29-year-old is now back with the Cottagers following a successful World Cup finals where the Black Stars reached the quarter finals before having their hearts broken by Uruguay.

Fulham have just named Mark Hughes as their new boss and it is believed the ex-Manchester City manager could be prepared to let the defender leave.

The Craven Cottage outfit have been linked with Aston Villa right-back Luke Young and are mulling over selling Pantsil rather than losing him for free next summer.

The former West Ham defender, who has performed consistently at Premier League level, has one year left on his Fulham contract.

Fulham manager Mark Hughes makes signing Craig Bellamy top priority
Fulham's new manager Mark Hughes is set to hijack Tottenham's plans to sign Craig Bellamy from Manchester City, according to reports.

Hughes, who yesterday agreed a two-year deal to replace Roy Hodgson as manager of Fulham, is believed to have told the board at Craven Cottage that securing Bellamy's signature is of the utmost priority as he looks to continue the club's success over the last two seasons.

For his part, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has made no secret of his desire to sign the City striker having tried to sign him earlier this year, but he admits he doubts the deal would ever go through.

"I like Craig Bellamy but I don't know if they would sell him," Redknapp told the Guardian. "The chairman deals with all the transfers. He asks me what I want and I tell him. I don't know where he's at with Bellamy, if anywhere."

However it seems that if Bellamy were to move, Hughes would have the upper hand having worked with the 31-year-old at three different clubs as well as during his brief stint as Wales manager.

Talking to Fulham's website for the first time after it was announced he would succeed Hodgson, Hughes made it clear he had explained his vision for the club to chairman chairman Mohamed Al Fayed.

"I have discussed my aspirations with the chairman and [the chief executive] Alistair Mackintosh and believe that we are aligned in our aims for what can realistically be achieved here.

Bellamy aside, it has also been reported that Hughes wants to sign former players midfielder Stephen Ireland and the striker Roque Santa Cruz, also from City.

Fulham legend Cohen welcomes Hughes appointment

Fulham and England legend George Cohen believes Mark Hughes can continue Roy Hodgson's excellent work.

World Cup winner Cohen, 70, spent all his career with the Whites.

He said: "He's a quiet man and that's the right approach for Fulham.

"Roy's personality suited Fulham very well.

"Mark is a quiet man. People who shout don't impress me - Alf Ramsey was a quiet man, too.

"This is a job Mark will look at and think 'I've got something to follow here' because Roy's 2½ years at Fulham were outstanding.

"He knows he's got a good squad but will want to add to it. I'm sure he'll get the club's full support."

Cohen also urged Hughes to keep goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer and added: "I'd like him to stay. He was outstanding last year."

Why lack of money means Mark Hughes can show he's a real manager at Fulham

From money no object, to scrutiny of every pound going out of the door.

But for Mark Hughes, Fulham is perhaps the perfect place for him to prove he is going to be one of the big names in football management.

Although the Craven Cottage club had earmarked Martin Jol for the post before his rapid change of heart last week, they may have ended up with a far better option.

Jol, for all his claims about having a score to settle with the Premier League, has established himself and his reputation.

Hughes, by contrast, feels bruised and hurt by the way his life at Manchester City was ended - and now has the ideal chance to demonstrate all his qualities.

Fulham have never - apart from that brief and bizarre spell under Kevin Keegan at the start of Mohamed Al Fayed's reign - been big spenders, although their losses remain vast in comparison to the size of the club.

But just as Hughes was able to remake Blackburn in his own image, building a side that played to the maximum of its potential, so he can build on what he has inherited from Roy Hodgson.

It was not like that at City. The club he joined under Thaksin Shinawatra was transformed overnight after the arrival of Sheikh Mansour and the Abu Dhabi billions.

Where Hughes had been planning for long-term growth and development, he was suddenly expected to turn the world upside down overnight.

Of course, he could never claim that he was not backed financially. Indeed, at times, he must have felt a little like a kid who had been handed the keys to a sweet shop.

At the same time, though, the expectations were unreasonable.

Clubs have to grow organically, to do part of the transformation themselves.

City's owners, coming into the game as outsiders, saw what had happened at Chelsea under Roman Abramovich and assumed the same thing would happen at Eastlands once the money started being spent.

What they ignored, of course, was that Chelsea were already a Champions League club before Abramovich arrived, already had John Terry and Frank Lampard and that the first signings of the Abramovich era were Joe Cole, Glen Johnson and Alexey Smertin (although the Russian was immediately sent on loan to Portsmouth).

Hughes had no option but to play along. After all, everybody wants to play Fantasy Football for real occasionally and the signings of Robinho, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Vincent Kompany, Wayne Bridge, Craig Bellamy and Nigel De Jong made sense - even if Jo was a staggering disappointment.

But even so, demanding a top four finish last season, even after the arrivals of the second wave of players including Gareth Barry, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz, was asking for too much, too soon.

The pressure was clearly getting to Hughes, the lack of respect from Robinho in particular - which followed on from the behaviour of the departed Elano - increasingly hard to accept, even more so when it seemed the money men were inclined to back the player rather than the manager.

When he was given his marching orders, just before Christmas, having been put through the ignominy of preparing his side for win over Sunderland in the knowledge that his successor, Roberto Mancini, was in the directors' box scouting his new side, it was probably a relief.

Now, eight months on and with a fortnight to go before the start of the new campaign, Hughes is back in the game - and ready to show what he is all about.

Unsurprisingly, he will bring with him his trusted personal coaching staff, Mark Bowen, Eddie Niedzwiecki and Kevin Hitchcock, men who know exactly how "Sparky" wants things done.

What is certain is that the Fulham players, especially those old enough to remember Hughes in his playing incarnation, will not expect the thoughtful, under-stated but intelligent man they will meet most of the time.

In fact, that is the real Hughes, almost as if he underwent his own 90-minute transformation when he laced up his boots.

When he is angry, of course, they will know it. You cannot hide deep furies.

But Hughes wants to show he is the manager he believes himself capable of becoming, knows that he can re-forge his reputation at a club where the fans are always realistic, where the pressure is slightly off, where he can rediscover his love for the game and coaching players.

Of course, it could all go wrong. Look at Lawrie Sanchez, whose reputation has never been restored after he was forced out of the door allowing the room for Hodgson's arrival.

With Hughes, however, Fulham seem to have made the best possible choice. And you can imagine how much he'll be looking forward to City's arrival at the Cottage in November.

Mark Hughes Faces Tough Decisions After Taking Charge at Fulham

An impossible job or a great opportunity to build on established foundations? Depending on who you listen to, Mark Hughes has inherited both after being installed as Roy Hodgson's successor at Fulham.

There's no doubt that Hodgson's achievements in transforming the club from relegation certainties into Europa League finalists in two and a half seasons has set a formidable benchmark against which Hughes's efforts will be measured.

If, as many believe, the club overachieved during the Hodgson era, benefiting from the previous manager's ability to draw the very best out of group of players, many of whom would struggle to get in other Premier League teams, then Hughes will need to work wonders to even tread water.

On the other hand, the new manager has been brought in precisely because of his ability to build effective, winning teams and, with the backing of a reasonable transfer budget, it is not unreasonable to suggest Fulham can maintain their capacity to shock bigger and supposedly better teams.

Certainly club owner Mohamed Al Fayed expects further progress. "We have enjoyed two incredibly successful years, and my hopes and dreams for this club are for that journey to continue," Al Fayed told the club website, fulhamfc.com. "I am confident that with his Premier League and national team successes, Mark will be a great guy for the job."

Hughes's reaction to his appointment reinforced the feeling Hodgson's tenure will hang over the club for some time to come. "I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the club's history, and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition," Hughes said.

"I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward in the right direction."

A daunting task then but one that, at first glance, appears to be focused on evolution rather than revolution. It would take a brave or foolhardy manager to dismantle Hodgson's team and risk losing the momentum of the last two seasons.

Hughes, though, must make changes if the club is to avoid becoming becalmed. The key to any successful club is an ability to strengthen before weaknesses become apparent and if the former Manchester City manager feels he cannot coax a third season of outstanding performances from a small squad, then the arrival of new faces will be crucial if he is to reinvigorate the side.

His immediate problem is to resolve the future of Mark Schwarzer, the goalkeeper who remains a target for Arsenal. If, as expected, the Gunners increase their initial £2 million bid to £4 million, the 37-year-old Australian seems certain to leave and the manager must bring in a new goalkeeper, with Portsmouth's David James and Hull's Boaz Myhill the likely contenders.

Hughes generates a strong sense of loyalty in his favourite players and Craig Bellamy and Roque Santa Cruz, the strikers who followed him from Blackburn to Manchester City would willingly sign up for another reunion.

Both would add quality and a winning mentality but fitting any new players into a tightly knit squad will pose a challenge to the manager.

Then, perhaps most importantly, he must make a quick decision on the future seven first team players who are out of contract next summer.

Danny Murphy, Simon Davies, Zoltan Gera, Dickson Etuhu, Paul Konchesky, Chris Baird and John Pantsil were part of the core of Hodgson's squad but are all free to negotiate with other clubs from January and Hughes must act soon if he wants to head off the possibility of any of these players leaving for free.

If he cannot assure them they are part of his long term plans, the cohesion that was a feature of Hodgson's squad could weaken slightly, especially if the club stutters during the opening weeks of the season.

Hughes, then, faces a balancing act and must plan for the long term while minimising disruption to a side and methods that have delivered recent success.

A tough job, certainly. But impossible? Certainly not..

Bookies fancy Mark Hughes to keep Fulham in the Premier League
Cottagers are in safe hands under Sparky, according to the latest odds

Odds supplied by Titan Bet

New Fulham boss Mark Hughes has been tipped by the bookmakers to keep the club up next season after being appointed as the successor to Roy Hodgson.

* Official: Fulham Appoint Mark Hughes As Manager on Two-Year Contract

Hughes, who was trading as low as 1.04 (1/25) yesterday on betting exchanges, has penned a two-year deal after the long-running saga was finally brought to an end. Many punters were stung badly by backing Martin Jol at a short price only for the Dutchman to do a last-minute U-turn and remain at Ajax.

Anyone who placed a stake on Hughes a week ago at odds of 5.0 (4/1) will be counting the profits as Fulham prepare to unveil their new man to the media later today.

The Cottagers are a short price to maintain their Premier League status at 1.05 (1/20), with 9.0 (8/1) on the Londoners getting relegated. Fulham are a long shot right now at 41.0 (40/1) to finish rock bottom and 26.0 (25/1) to be propping up the table at Christmas.

Goal.com's betting and odds expert David Mole says Hughes has a job on his hands to repeat his exploits with Blackburn Rovers.

"It will be interesting to assess the odds on him to repeat his top-six finish with Blackburn, but it will be a very different experience to his last days at Eastlands. Al Fayed is notoriously unwilling to splash his cash and Hughes to be managing Fulham in the Championship next season could be worth a punt at the right price!"

You'll get odds of 3.25 (9/4) on Hughes leading his new side to a top-10 finish in his debut season in charge. He's 15.0 (14/1) to win the manager of the month award for August with his new side rank outsiders at 101.0 (100/1) to be the top club from the capital and 1001.0 (1000/1) to win the league.

A decent stint at Fulham would see Hughes back in contention for the job at his old club Manchester United. 'Sparky' is 34.0 (33/1) to take over from his mentor Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

How will Hughes spend his £20m?

Mark Hughes has been confirmed as the new manager of Fulham FC, and it's reported that he has a transfer kitty of £20m to spend before the Premier League transfer window shuts at the end of August. So who will he buy?

Hughes was always going to be linked with a move for Craig Bellamy, mainly because he has managed him on a number of occasions and has signed him twice already, when in charge of Blackburn and Manchester City. Bellamy would be a good option for Fulham, however Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is also a big admirer of the player, and will also bid for his services. It's likely that the lure of Champions League football will be enough for Bellamy to choose White Hart Line over Craven Cottage.

Stephan Ireland is another Manchester City player who Hughes may look to sign, and he could have more success with this transfer target. Ireland will be allowed to leave the City of Manchester Stadium before the start of the season, and Hughes is likely to make a bid for the player next week. A fee of around £8m could be enough to secure his signature.

Another midfielder being linked with the Club is Steve Sidwell, who is surplus to requirements at Villa Park. Sidwell would be available for about £4m and he would bring some bite into the Fulham midfield. If Hughes is successful with his bid for Ireland, however, Sidwell may move down his list of transfer targets.

Replacing Mark Schwarzer could be the first task Hughes is faced with, as the 37-year-old Australian's move to Arsenal now appears imminent. West Ham might be open to offers of around £6m for Robert Green, although a move for David James, on a free transfer, could also be on the cards as Celtic have dropped their interest in the England International.

Robbie Keane was linked with a move to the club when it looked like Martin Jol was going to take up the post of manager. Hughes will want to strengthen his attacking options, and if Bellamy joins Spurs then you could see Keane complete Fulham's summer spending. He would be available for around £8m and the plucky Irishman could prove a big hit at Craven Cottage.

Welcome Mr Hughes
by TOR on JULY 30, 2010

So that's sorted then. We've got Mark Hughes, whose first game in charge will be the final pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen a week tomorrow. I've said before that I would have been happy with that appointment and I still am, but I shan't gloat. This will probably mean I'll be a little more patient than some other fans, but obviously I still hope he gets stuck in and we start seeing some good football and some good results (for, sadly, the two do not necessarily go hand in hand) early on.

As Lydia pointed out recently, this now launches the question of which of Man City's "surplus" players we'll see gracing our shiny new pitch in a couple of weeks. It's not just Man City players we're being linked with now. There's still the suggestion that Steve Sidwell is on his way subject to a signature or two, his teammate at Aston Villa Luke Young and possibly Rob Green if we lose Super Mark Schwarzer to Arsenal. If the papers are to be believed, Hughes will have a kitty of about £15m which should be enough for a handful of canny signings – fortunately he's got a good team already, which just needs the odd tweak to bolster it, rather than having to make wholesale changes. Perhaps a bit of youth in midfield (sorry Danny) and a bit of support upfront and that'll see us through. I have to say I'd quite like to see Nicky Shorey come back and play a bit more but that's unlikely given how much cover we've got at left back now. There are rumours that John Paintsil may be off to West Brom so I wonder if we would need to bring in reinforcements, or perhaps shuffle around our defensive players a bit to fill the gap. I'd prefer the latter actually – the boys (and this goes for all our players, not just those at the back) seem to have a good understanding and work well together so this option shouldn't cause too many problems. And it saves money that we can then spend where we really need it.

Hughes' appointment is a step in the right direction but I think we're still a couple of weeks off settling down and getting comfy. The question of the back-room staff has yet to be fully answered, and there are clearly going to be some changes to the squad which will take time to bed in, but we'll get there. And if we don't, I'll eat my vuvuzela.

Premier League boss Richards faces Fulham legal case

Fulham are taking legal action against Premier League chairman Sir Dave Richards, BBC Sport understands.

The Cottagers accuse Richards of being involved in Peter Crouch's £9m transfer from Portsmouth to Spurs in July 2009.

Fulham were angry they missed out on England striker Crouch despite offering £2m more than Tottenham and lodged a complaint with the Premier League.

The League carried out its own investigation and an independent lawyer found Richards had no case to answer.

However, Fulham have now lodged a High Court petition against Richards, arguing he may have prejudiced their position in relation to the transfer.

BBC Sport understands that Portsmouth decided to accept less money from Spurs because it was an up-front payment, and due to pressure from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs for unpaid tax, this was a better deal than the £11m in instalments that Fulham were offering.

A Premier League spokesman said: "We cannot make any comment on this matter as it is subject to a legal challenge."

Hughes plots raid for City trio in bid to take Cottagers to next step

Mark Hughes could be set to raid his old club after being confirmed as Fulham's new manager.

Hughes (pictured) has agreed a two-year deal with the Cottagers to become the successor to Roy Hodgson. Fulham's failure to prise Martin Jol from Ajax left Hughes in pole position, and the former Manchester City boss will begin work at the club immediately.

He will take charge of his first match in a friendly against Werder Bremen on August 7 and will be unveiled to the media next Tuesday.

"I have discussed my aspirations with both the chairman and (chief executive) Alistair Mackintosh, and believe that we are aligned in our aims for what can realistically be achieved here," Hughes said.

"I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the club's history and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition.

"I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward in the right direction.

"I hope the Fulham fans will enjoy some special times during this season's campaign and we will work hard to achieve that.

"I'm looking forward to working with the squad as soon as possible, and making sure the on-pitch preparations are complete before the first competitive ball is kicked in August."

But Hughes faces a number of dilemmas. Firstly, goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is a target for Arsenal and Hughes will need to pull out all the stops to persuade the Australian to stay.

Left-back Paul Konchesky has also been linked with a move to Liverpool, while Hughes will turn to former club Manchester City to try and land Craig Bellamy, Stephen Ireland and Roque Santa Cruz.

Hughes began his transition from a highly-decorated player to successful manager when he took charge of the Welsh national team in 1999.

He won praise for his efforts in the role, although he could not quite steer them to the major championships the nation desired.

He resigned his post in 2004, taking over at the club where he had ended his playing days, Blackburn Rovers.

From there he was appointed boss of Manchester City but, despite pushing the club into the top six, the aspirations changed when the Abu Dhabi United Group took charge at Eastlands.

The takeover made City the richest club in the world, but even though Hughes spent heavily on players, the progress was not considered good enough and he was sacked last December.

Hughes & Fulham: The perfect fit?

After a protracted and ultimately fruitless attempt to sign Martin Jol from Ajax, the task of replacing Roy Hodgson at Craven Cottage has fallen to Mark Hughes. Though Hughes may have less trouble refuting 'ewwoneous' transfer rumours, his predecessor's incredible rejuvenation of the West London club from final-day survivors of relegation to Europa League finalists will be as hard an act to follow as Take That in concrete. So, having been spurned by their first-choice, have Fulham stumbled upon the perfect man for the job?

Final fling

After being brought in around Christmas of 2008, Hodgson appeared to immediately improve a struggling Fulham side, with a dramatic comeback victory over Man City a notable example. However, they were still taken to the wire in their attempts to avoid relegation, something they achieved with a final-day win away at Portsmouth. Cementing his transformation of the side, Fulham managed a tremendous seventh in the league the following season. Using the Europa League place that seventh place handed them, Hodgson led Fulham to the final in probably the most successful season in the club's history.

City slackers

At the start of last season any betting on the most successful manager out of the two would have had Hughes far in front. Beginning the second year of a tumultuous spell at Manchester City, with the arrival of billionaire owners and high-profile names like Robinho, Hughes looked set to pose a serious threat to the established top-four. However, a lengthy spell of games featuring just one loss, away to rivals Man Utd, included too many draws to satisfy the owners. Thus, despite publicly supporting the manager, it became clear that Hughes' position was far from stable. An ignominious exit, in which rumours of his departure spread before kick-off at home to Sunderland, left Hughes with widespread sympathy at how he was treated, particularly given new manager Roberto Mancini's failure to secure Champions League qualification.

Tough Competition

Despite their lack of Champions League football, City have been far from shy in this summer's transfer market. With their significantly improved squad, they are sure to challenge for a fourth placed finish this season and will perhaps have aspirations of going even further. As well as City, Aston Villa have consistently achieved European football in recent years and, despite the possible departure of James Milner to Manchester, look set to do so again. Everton, too, are good bets to push Tottenham and City all the way, with an impressive array of midfield talent and an excellent manager in David Moyes. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson's brief at Anfield would surely be to firstly ensure qualification for the Champions League, after Liverpool's regression last season into the pack of clubs behind United, Chelsea and then Arsenal.
The point is; that two seasons is a very long time in football and since Fulham's impressive seventh place finish in 2008-09, the Premier league has moved on considerably. Last season, while enjoying their incredible Europa League run, they could only manage a mid-table 12th. If Fulham fans are expecting another European finish and a tilt at Europa league glory, then they would do well to reassess those expectations.

Shrewd appointment

Any delusions of grandeur that may exist in overly optimistic fans are not apparent at board level. After having their advances shunned by Ajax, Fulham didn't turn to a big name in the shape of the likes of Sven Goran Eriksson, but instead to Hughes. The very reason he was given the job at City was his excellent time in charge of Blackburn. Surprising everyone to achieve Uefa Cup qualification with sixth place in his second season, he also reached two FA Cup Semi Finals. Achieving such success with a fairly modest club and on a fairly modest budget will stand Hughes in good stead for his time at Fulham.

Market Value

However, he may be given the funds by Mohamed Al-Fayed to fully utilise his nous in the transfer market. As well as on the pitch, the financial benefit to the Ewood park club of Hughes bringing in the likes of David Bentley and Roque Santa Cruz for minimal fees before making a huge profit in selling them on. On his arrival, Hughes commented that "I will be working with a good budget which the Chairman has promised me, and I hope to expand our squad". Perhaps inevitably, his appointment was swiftly followed by a flurry of rumoured targets. At the fore were players Hughes managed at Man City, though the name of Santa Cruz, who he signed for both Blackburn and City, also featured.
The possibility of beating the likes of reportedly interested Spurs to the signings of Craig Bellamy, Stephen Ireland and Roque Santa Cruz would be sure to excite fans at Craven Cottage and Hughes' relationships with the players could prove decisive in any chase. Perhaps more importantly, though, Hughes must either persuade want-away Arsenal target Mark Schwarzer or sign a replacement able to bring the same commanding presence to the back-line and experience in goal.

So, provided Fulham can adjust their expectations and conclude that what Roy Hodgson did at the club may never be surpassed, partly due to his managerial abilities and partly because of the strengthening of the upper echelons of the Premier League, then Hughes should, as his time at Blackburn showed, be able to succeed. Roy may have departed, but it looks like the Rovers spirit may serve them well in a new era.
