"No contact from Fulham, about Fulham or any hope to join Fulham"

Very candid, seems a consumate pro keeping his head down, I genuinely believe this story can now be put to bed and classifed as dead in the water

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Fridel has rubbished suggestions that he is on the verge of joining Fulham and made clear that speculation surrounding his future had nothing to do with manager Martin O'Neill's shock decision to quit the club.

Reports in the British tabloid press yesterday suggested that new Cottagers coach Mark Hughes had targeted the veteran American shot stopper as a replacement for Australian international Mark Schwarzer who has himself been heavily tipped to move to Arsenal.

Speaking to Sky Sports News about the rumours, Friedel made clear:

"That story was made up. I've never had contact from Fulham or with Fulham.

"I never had a conversation with Martin O'Neill about Fulham. I really don't know where that came from."
Aston Villa are understood to have drawn up an extensive list of possible replacements for O'Neill which Sport.co.uk understands includes Bundesliga coach Ralf Rangnick. To read the full story, click here.
