Title: Dumbest thing ANY club has ever done
Post by: valdeingruo on July 20, 2016, 10:01:13 PM
If the press is to be believed, Pogba is returning to United. Is this up there as the dumbest thing a club has ever done, given the fee?

Paying what is quoted at 100 mil plus for someone who used to play in your academy has to be up there.

Don't forget the buy on clause.

Probably because Man United sold him for 800,000.

Wikipedia described the transfer thus:

On 3 July 2012, Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson confirmed that Pogba had left the club after not signing a new contract. Ferguson stated that Pogba had signed for Italian club Juventus "a long time ago as far as we're aware." Ferguson also accused Pogba of disrespecting Manchester United, saying, "It is disappointing. I don't think he showed us any respect at all, to be honest. I'm quite happy that if they [footballers] carry on that way, they're probably better doing it away from us." On 27 July, Juventus confirmed on their official website that Pogba had undergone a medical at the club, and the transfer was completed on 3 August 2012.

Only a 99,000,000 pound deficit on the total trade.
Reasonably dumb, I'd agree

This would be like us buying back Patrick Roberts for three times what we got for him.  Very dumb.

Was there a sell-on clause in there? If so, could explain the higher fee cause it only goes back to United.

He is a player with potential but nowhere near worth 100m. I mean for 100m we should have seen him dominate game after game for juve and France - but that's not been the case- e.g he was average at best in the euros.

Surely having 3 managers in 12 weeks is up there, and the 4 in about the same amount of time a couple of years later

I wouldn't say it's dumb. He had potential to be a good player but he wanted to play football which he wasn't doing. He was allowed to leave and i think being a bigger player in a smaller league helped him.

You can't just hold onto players just incase they might develop into a 100m player. In hindsight it's foolish but decisions need to be made.

the club thought more would take up the option if a raffle ticket but I think only 4 did meaning 80 quid raised, would have cost them to take anyone, some in the club stupidly made someone up.

What about spending £12million on a crocked overweight Greek player ?
Much bigger proportion of a budget than Man U

we didn't spend 12 million in the end and recouped almost all of it anyway. Worse for me was Marlet similar prices and never recouped the money

I doubt manu are paying a£100 million, they most likely had a big percentage of any future sales when they let him go. Although he was out of contract

Don't see how Man Utd could negotiate that as it wasn't in their hands due to being out of contract

But we lost our PL status, which could have been avoided if we had a fit ~£10m striker actually playing for us.

Hiring Felix?

In hindsight, sure. He had a reputation for doing exactly what was needed at the time. Was a fairly logical choice ..... especially if you remove the fact that he's a raving looney.

I rather like the one where Graham Souness signed George Weah's 'cousin' to play for Southampton.

If I understand the Pogba situation correctly it parallels Fulham and Dembele, ie a very young player deciding not to sign his first professional contract and so the club cannot hang onto him or obtain a substantial transfer fee. Being United the financial values involved are that much greater! So arguably United were unfortunate, not dumb!

Ryan Tunnicliffe was Manchester United's Young PotY in Pogba's last season with them, perhaps they might stump up £105m to get him back.

dumbest?

I suspect all clubs have long lists but for me...
selling mullery
not keeping clarke for one season
budgie byrne
ian branfoot
marlet
martin Jol (never was a fan)
ruiz
mitroglu
felix
the current board of fulham remaining in place

sorry that most of the foregoing are a rprise of my favourite debates and i am not trying to re-run them now, just my opinion.

By the way on the opposite side favourite unexpected gems were
Robbie herrera
Ivor
Nick Cusack at center back
Kevin lock/Ray Houghton
Pantsil

Agree.  Ten months after Pogba's departure Manchester United were celebrating as champions with a whopping 89 points.  Clearly they didn't need him at all.  Possibly unfortunate at missing out on a developing player, but in all fairness PP was right to insist he should be playing and he appeared 37 times for Juventus in his first season.  Can't see how the description in the title is particularly fair.  Life's twist and turns are hard to predict.

Let's hope the Dembele parallels hold out.

Fulham neglecting their own supporters, with lack of communication, false hope and dreadful football since late 2013.

Let us Fulham fans be a little humble here before we mock the club hierarchy. We were the first people to throw the 'ambition' quote back in Hughe's direction (recall the away match v QPR)!

To be fair to Pogba, when the club you're at brings back a retired player and plays him and Cleverly over you, you have every right to feel aggrieved enough to leave.
