Title: After 19 games last season
Post by: H4usuallysitting on December 04, 2016, 10:41:48 AM
League position 16
Won 6
Drawn 4
Lost 9
Goals for 30
Goals against 34
Points 22

This season
League position 10
Won 7
Drawn 7
Lost 5
Goals for 30 (obviously including 5 yesterday)
Goals against 21
Points 28

Not sure if any of the above means anything - just thought i'd share our progress

Believe it or not this time last year Brighton were 3rd from bottom on 18 points - today Cardiff are third from bottom on 19 points

We use to get posts like this on a regular basis from the Kit Symons fan club, no they've all dried up and he thankfully never receives a mention,
At long last our support is truly 100% behind Slavisa , and long may it continue.

Brighton were flying last season too, I think you might mean the previous season under Hyypia.

By my reckoning, after 19 games last season we had won 5, drawn 7 and lost 7. Granted, it amounts to the same number of points.

And Brighton were top of the league.

I think it is fair to say that fans who didn't and don't buy into the Joka is the best ever manager who walked the Earth are considered Kit Symons fans. I know because I have been accused of the same thing. But I look at the overall improvement in the team. Our patchy home record and good away record and still am not convinced that Joka is the great one. I just stick to the facts and would say Joka made no improvement last season with the same players as Symons had. This season has began his rebuilding and we have flashes of looking like the real article but flashes of looking like pretenders. Thank God we have a team that we can all agree is improving from the past few seasons. However even Joka makes the point he is not in charge of transfers. His philosophy is working overall. Now we need to find some consistency at home as well as continue our good form away.

Always behind the team. Will always question the manager when we dip in form.

I don't think anyone on this board has ever suggested Joka is "the best ever manager who walked the Earth" or words to that effect.  But the improvement is certainly there.  We take our worse defeats this season, I think, when we get bullied, when refs let opponents foul and cheat without getting called for it.  No formation change will fix that. If the refs won't do their job, the players have to find a way...  But, my  gosh, look at the difference in goals against this season.  If we continue to maintain that ratio of improvement throughout the season, we could definitely make the playoffs, all else remaining the same.

Last season two clean sheets in the league.  This season six.  Every clean sheet is a confidence boost for all XI.

On average a clean sheet is worth 2.35 pts per game over a season. Always a good thing to have them and seems if Kalas plays we have someone who helps us get them.

Totally agree Forever Fulham.  We are doing much better this season.  That is for sure.  I love what we are doing and hope it continues to improve getting better and better as the season progresses.  I'm still not sure that we will get sixth or better this season but do think if we continue on the path that Joka has laid we could be doing great things next season.

interesting stats
more interesting is my wife came to the game for the first time in ages yesterday and even before the goal fest said the improvement was staggering. she had been regularly for years but after the dross of the last three seasons packed in for a while!

she thought we played like a team and looked to have far more skillful players than before. she particularly thought macdonald and cairney played well because they were measured and intelligent in their position and use use of the ball.... interetsing.... he thought martin looked good but was not supplied the ball properly, she noticed him in the box often, making the right move but not being used.

i think joca is absolutely brilliant, top class and but for an insane purchasing policy instigated by our owner and his son using kline to overrule the manager we would be in the top two by now. we are a few goals short of being a real contender for promotion, automatic.  i will go on like a broken record until the owner wakes up and smells the coffee rather than sleeps walks us backwards and we lose joca because he gets an inevitable better offer!

Simple. We solved our goals against problem by replacing our front line with strikers who can also pressure and defend. We also got in McDonald, the holding midfielder we haven't had since Dickson Etuhu left. Add to this a strong leader, a solid team philosophy, and a coherent game plan the likes of which we haven't seen since Hughes' departure, and you have quality.

Simple.

And McDonald is a far better passer of the ball than Etuhu, for all his strengths, ever was.

Thanks for the update.  It is good to some statistical evidence in support of what we know to be the case - we have something resembling a defence at last and, while we had scored as many goals last season at this stage, we are no longer reliant on just two players for these.

Absolutely. Hooper and Forestieri's persistent fouling was nearly our undoing with a very weak ref. Noticed against Reading that when early on a player came into him, Kalas gave him a good knock to say, this is my space. Someone around me commented it was a foul. Indeed, but the ref didn't give it, and Kalas has to let people know he is not a soft touch. I'd say he is a fast learner! But I stick with my prediction of third place. I may have revised this upwards had we won at Brighton. Hopeless optimism? Maybe. But I think we have played some superlative football at times this year. If only we could be consistent .. and of course find a way of unlocking teams that park the bus.

I've been one of Symons' harshest critics but I do think it worth keeping the margin of our improvement since his tenure in perspective and not getting carried away.

Across his 50-odd games in charge we averaged about 1.3 pts/game (14/15 1.31, 15/16 1.25, total 1.29). This season we've averaged just under 1.5 pts/game.

That's a substantial difference which I do put down to Jokanovic being a much better manager but to be fair to Symons, had he had a full season in charge then based on the foregoing numbers we'd probably have finished around 12th-15th. At the moment we're 10th so it's not such a big difference as some might think.

It's also worth noting that this season, with the Symons numbers above we'd currently only have 3 pts less than we do now. So in other words, if we'd lost to Reading on Saturday then you could say statistically we're still no better than under Symons. The difference after all this time is just one result.

So now I'm going to bang my drum again and say we do need to be getting up to 6th to claim a real substantial improvement. The key thing is this season I think we've the potential to do that.
But that's only if kit kept up his average. Towards the end it looked like we were getting progressively worse under kit, and I doubt he would have kept the average as high as that

I think the footbal is better under Joka than under Symmons whether the stats are close or not.

I was disappointed when Kit was sacked, and annoyed with the delay in appointing Jokanovic, however I now go to games thinking rather than hoping Fulham won't lose. (I'm to superstitious to think Fulham will win).

The footballs better, the team is better, and they don't have to score 3 to be in with a chance of winning

I think we really need to find our form, once we have our consistency together we can definitely look up. We have the best side in the league on our day, and I think we've proved that when we've dominated.

Just can't get complacent and rely on a 1-0 lead.
