Tottenham must loan back Ryan Sessegnon to Fulham if they sign him this summer

Tottenham Hotspur is the best place for Ryan Sessegnon long-term, but he still has a lot to learn.

Last night saw Fulham book their place in the Championship play-off final with a 2-0 win over Derby County. Denis Odoi's unlikely header proved the crucial goal as Fulham won 2-1 on aggregate. But there is no stopping Fulham's teen sensation Ryan Sessegnon from making headlines. He scored the equaliser in the game, helping send Fulham to Wembley.

Sessegnon's fine season at Craven Cottage has seen him linked with a number of top clubs around Europe. One team considered to be a favourite in the race for his signature are Tottenham Hotspur. Their London proximity and ability to develop young talent has seen them tipped as his best move by many.

Sessegnon, who The Times report is valued at £50 million by Fulham, should undoubtedly be a target for Spurs.

Last night's performance only highlighted the fact that Sessegnon could be a star in the making and Spurs would be right to make a switch become reality.

However, his performance over both legs of the play-offs also confirms another matter. If Tottenham were to sign the 17-year-old, they should send him back to Fulham on loan for next season.

Sessegnon is clearly a world-class talent in the making. But throughout the play-off fixture, it became apparent that the finished article he is not.

He struggled at times with Derby's defensive work and, tracking back, he often found himself out of position. Obviously, he is a fantastic talent but there are still many aspects of his game that need improving.

He still needs another season at Fulham to truly blossom into the player Spurs want and, in an ideal world, Tottenham would wait until next summer to sign him. But with the likes of PSG and Manchester United loitering Spurs have to act fast.

Bringing him and sending him out on loan would not be a bad idea. Hopefully, Fulham will be in the Premier League and the teenager can learn the ropes of top-flight football whilst still at his boyhood club.

Then, next summer, Spurs would have an even more developed young talent – similar to the situation when they signed Dele Alli from MK Dons.

Sessegnon will still only be 19-years-old by the start of next season and Spurs will have acquired an even more rounded footballer in the process.

It would be the best move for all parties, especially the player himself.

How Fulham's Denis Odoi went from defensive liability to play-off hero

The 29-year-old grabbed the Cottagers' winner in the play-off semi-final

Carried off the pitch on the shoulders of an adoring Craven Cottage crowd, Denis Odoi enjoyed his finest footballing moment in Fulham's 2-0 play-off semi-final win over Derby.

The Belgian defender scored a sensational headed winner to send the Whites to Wembley, but few would have predicted Odoi would play the hero on Monday night.

How did a player once derided as a defensive liability become Fulham's play-off saviour?

Ever since making the switch from Belgian football to Fulham in the summer of 2016, Odoi had struggled to nail down a starting spot at the Cottage.

Previously best known for an audacious bit of skill he pulled off against Newcastle on his debut, the 29-year-old became infamous for defensive lapses and poor giveaways.

Perhaps his lowest point in a Fulham shirt came this December, when Odoi was senselessly sent off in a dreadful 3-1 loss to Brentford.

His two yellow cards in quick succession were easily avoidable; afterwards, it looked set that the centre-back pairing of Tomas Kalas and Tim Ream would reign supreme for the rest of the season.

But after Kalas suffered a hip injury against Wolves in late February, Odoi has seamlessly marshalled the Fulham backline alongside Ream.

Even when the Chelsea loanee returned to fitness, the Belgian has kept him out of the starting lineup with superb performances filled with excellent tackles, a strong aerial presence, and intelligent interceptions.

Since Odoi replaced Kalas, Fulham have kept a remarkable seven clean sheets in the following 14 matches, in which Odoi has played every minute.

Odoi's play-off performances have thrust him firmly into Fulham folklore.

In the narrow first-leg defeat at Pride Park, the centre-back made a number of stunning interceptions to cut out dangerous crosses that would have resulted in certain goals.

These vital interventions meant the scoreline was kept a manageable 1-0, allowing Odoi to rise highest from a corner and send Fulham to the play-off final.

During May 26's match at Wembley, expect Denis Odoi to continue his recent resurgence

Ryan Sessegnon, playing football the Fulham way and Kamara - talking points from the play-offs

Ryan Sessegnon and Denis Odoi goals gave Fulham victory in the play-off semi final against Derby County - here's the talking points from the game

History made

Much had been made about Fulham's inability to win a play-off game before Monday night's win over Derby - seven times they'd tried and seven times they'd failed.

But Monday was different - the side finally took the initiative in what was the biggest game of the season and controlled it from start to finish, with Slavisa Jokanovic even going as far as to say Fulham were 'almost perfect'.

It's hard to argue with.

The men in white were everywhere at Craven Cottage, right from Marcus Bettinelli's dominance of his box, to Tim Ream's colossal performance in the heart of defence and all the way to Aboubakar Kamara's threat down the wing, it was a performance to be proud of.

At times it's been said that Fulham aren't able to deal with the pressure big games bring, but a year on from heartbreak at Reading, the Cottagers have finally stood up and been counted.

Ryan Sessegnon - from boy to man

He turns 18 this week, but Sessegnon's coming of age came on Monday night when he was in the right place at the right time to put Derby County to the sword.

That was his 51st appearance of the season and it looked like on Friday night that he was running out of steam after putting in, arguably, his worst performance in a Fulham shirt.

But like all good players, Sessegnon bounced back and scored one of the most important goals the side have scored to level things on aggregate and send the side on their to victory.

There's nothing I can say here that hasn't already been said about the 17-year-old - his maturity, reading of the game and ability to adapt to situations are far beyond his years and are that of someone destined for greatness.

Could the boyhood Fulham boy score the winning goal at Wembley under the arch?

Playing football the Fulham way

After the back-to-back defeats against Birmingham City and Derby County, it was being suggested that Fulham's style of play, as pleasing on the eye it was, wouldn't work in high pressure games.

But the team put that thinking to bed on Monday as they dominated Derby playing football in the only way they knew how.

64% possession, 20 shots, with ten of those on target and 488 passes (double what Derby had) - Fulham played the way they've been playing all season and it eventually took its toll on the away side, who had one effort on target all game.

It was a confident performance - even when efforts were flying wide Fulham didn't start to panic and they got the goals their pressure deserved.

They're probably the best footballing side in the division and now they'll have the chance to light up Wembley with their style, and it's safe to say it's football the old famous stadium deserves.

Aboubakar Kamara's performance

Kamara has to be the most improved player, not just in the Fulham side but in the entire Championship.

When he first signed, his talent was there but he was a raw player, rough round the edges with a lot of work to do to become an established Championship player.

But my word, what a difference!

He finally got his start on Monday night and he delivered - his pace was electric and he frightened his markers.

The rough round the edges aspect is still there with Kamara, there was a few times he could've done better on the break and his dive to try get Scott Carson sent off was downright embarrassing, but he's coming on leaps and bounds.

The Derby fullbacks had too easy of a time on Friday night, but with Kamara on the pitch from the start, they certainly had their hands full.

Everyone played their part

The scenes at the end were pure joy and it shows how much it means to these Fulham players.

Sure, some will say celebrating like that for getting to Wembley is wrong and they still have a job to do in the final, but with the journey these players have been on, I don't see anything wrong with the celebrations.

When I spoke to Tim Ream after Birmingham, he said these play-offs would be third time lucky, and after the heartbreak at the Madejski Stadium and the performance at St Andrews, performing like they did yesterday and getting to the final deserves celebrations like that.

(https://i2-prod.getwestlondon.co.uk/incoming/article14658317.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/Fulham-v-Derby-County-Sky-Bet-Championship-Play-Off-Semi-FinalSecond-Leg.jpg)
(Image: Mike Hewitt/Getty Images)

It's not been an easy route here for Fulham - they've battled against the drop before rebuilding themselves into the well-oiled machine you see before you, and on Monday, every one played their part.

The camaraderie is strong in that dressing room, everyone plays for everyone and those scenes at the end showed that.

Still a job to do

Once the dust settles, Fulham know that there's still a job to do.

Getting to the final is a fantastic achievement, but now the Whites have to go and win it.

A few days off will let the side relax before it's back to work at Motspur Park, preparing for whoever awaits them under the Arch on May 26.

Jokanovic certainly won't let them rest on their laurels, he said after the win that 'everything comes down to one game' and he couldn't be more right - Fulham have one shot at this and they must be on their game from the start.

But after this season, the Whites can go to Wembley with every confidence they'll do the job required.

Slavisa Jokanovic urges Fulham to maintain their standards at Wembley

The Cottagers beat Derby 2-1 on aggregate in the play-off semi-final.

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic wants more of the same at Wembley after describing his side's play-off semi-final second-leg win over Derby as close to perfection.

The Cottagers overturned a first-leg deficit in fine style at Craven Cottage as Ryan Sessegnon scored one and made another in a 2-0 win which booked a first national stadium appearance in 43 years.

It was sweet reward for Fulham, who went half of the regular season unbeaten, and put Derby to the sword in Monday's second leg.

And now the Serbian wants his side to finish the job next Saturday against either Aston Villa or Middlesbrough.

"We know how important it is to get the team there but it is more important to show our quality and win the game," he said.

"All of the season will depend about this last game. What we want to do now is clear our mind and rest our bodies and prepare for this game in 12 days to try and get in the Premier League.

"We haven't played at Wembley for 43 years so it is great for us.

"We have beaten many records this season, we are really satisfied and happy."

On his side's performance Jokanovic added: "You ask me many times about our trust, our self-belief, our confidence, sometimes we can play a bad game but today we played very good football.

"This season is 49 games, many times we played close to a brilliant level, we were really close to being perfect. I have to be satisfied for the work on the field."

For Derby it was a third play-off semi-final defeat in five years and they are condemned to an 11th successive season in the second tier.

Boss Gary Rowett, who expects Fulham to triumph next week, is now turning his attention to bouncing back next term.

"We have given it everything and three out of four teams in these play-offs are going to be disappointed," he said.

"I know it's Derby County, but I would imagine Fulham will be the favourites to go up.

"It's my job to assimilate why we couldn't quite do it and what we might need next season to be in a better position to do it.

"I have had to come in and balance the books a little bit more than previous people have done, I haven't been able to sign the best players in the Championship, which Derby have had the luxury to be able to do before.

"We have narrowly lost to one goal to the best team in the Championship since Christmas, there is no shame in that."

Sessegnon's incredible season – in numbers

Fulham star Ryan Sessegnon has taken the Championship by storm this season.

Aged just 17, he has been one of the division's standout players, especially since moving from left-back to a role on the left side of Fulham's attack.

He scored one and assisted the second goal as the Whites reached the play-off final with a 2-0 win over Derby on Monday night.

Should Fulham Star Ryan Sessegnon Get A Place In The England World Cup Squad?

Gareth Southgate announces his World Cup squad tomorrow and there are unlikely to be any major surprises. Jonjo Shelvey has perhaps forced himself into contention and of the four options in goal either Nick Pope or Joe Hart will be left behind. One potential wildcard to consider is Ryan Sessegnon, the teenage Fulham prospect and Championship Player of the Year.

England have a shortage of genuine left-footed options to choose from and Sessegnon can play as either a full back or winger. Despite his tender years, he is the undoubted star of an entertaining Fulham side that have just reached the Championship play-off final. After a quiet couple of games, Sessegnon popped up to score the goal that got them back on track against Derby County last night, lashing home from close range.

Quick, direct and confident, he's scored 16 goals and set up seven more despite spending much of the season at left back. Sessegnon hasn't played in the top flight but deserves consideration on current form and is destined for the very top, one way or the other. Comfortable receiving the ball in tight situations, and able to glide past players at will, he's unlikely to be fazed by the big occasion.

At international level, Sessegnon has regularly played above his age group and never looked out of place. Last summer he was the youngest member of the England squad that won the European Under-19 Championship in Georgia but already had more first team experience for his club than any of his teammates. Sessegnon scored three times to finish as joint-top scorer and was also named in the team of the tournament.

What started as a slightly outlandish suggestion that he should be taken to the World Cup no longer looks quite so absurd. Sessegnon was integral to the remarkable run of form that took Fulham from the bottom half of the table to the brink of automatic promotion and England have few direct challengers for his preferred left wing position. The youngster's versatility would also be in his favour.

When pointing out why Sessegnon won't be selected, many will suggest that Southgate is risk-averse and unwilling to make big decisions. But he isn't exactly the meek character he's often made out to be. Southgate has made some bold calls as England manager – from ending Wayne Rooney's decorated international career to leaving Theo Walcott out in the cold. Still, this might prove a step too far.

Few managers would be willing to take a 17-year-old, untested at the top level, to football's grandest stage. In fact, Sven-Goran Eriksson was the last to do so with England, as he selected Walcott for the 2006 World Cup. Although he made his debut in a warm-up friendly against Hungary, he wasn't used at all in the tournament. As Michael Owen succumbed to injury and Wayne Rooney was sent off, the decision was made to look particularly foolhardy as he remained on the bench.

In a 23-man squad there tends to be room for one gamble, and Sessegnon should be it. He would be the most speculative of wildcard selections, and it's doubtful that Southgate would ever take the plunge, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't happen. Fortune favours the bold, and this is potentially the sort of chance England should be taking if they are to elevate an ordinary squad beyond its inherent limitations.

'I love Fulham and want to take this club up' - Cairney can't wait to walk out at Wembley

The skipper has dreamed of playing at Wembley since he was a boy and doing it with Fulham is already giving him goosebumps

Tom Cairney doesn't think he'll be able to put his feelings into words if Fulham get promoted at Wembley, but insists he wants nothing more than to stay at the club and take them up.

The skipper was instrumental in the 2-0 victory over Derby County on Monday night in the play-off semi final second leg that saw them through to the final courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate win, where they will face either Aston Villa or Middlesbrough for a place in the Premier League.

After dragging themselves from 17th in November to the position they find themselves in now, via a 23-game unbeaten run, no one can say that Fulham don't deserve to be in the final at Wembley, and for Cairney, it's something he's dreamed of since he was a boy.

There was transfer talk linking him with a move away from Craven Cottage in January, but ahead of the final the 27-year-old has revealed he wants to take Fulham up and stay at the club.

He said: "I've said it since I extended my contract in the summer.

"There's been a lot of talk about a transfer and I've always said I love it here, I want to stay here and take this club up.

"Now I have the opportunity to do that and if I do it here I'll be, I don't know, I don't think I'll be able to put it into words.

"To get to go to Wembley is what everyone deserves, it's something I've dreamed of and something the rest of the team have dreamed of since they were little and to walk out there and play for Fulham and play the way we do will be a huge proud moment.

(https://i2-prod.getwestlondon.co.uk/incoming/article14659139.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/Fulham-v-Derby-County-Sky-Bet-Championship-Playoff-Semi-Final-Second-Leg-Craven-Cottage.jpg)
(Image: John Walton/PA Wire)

"Like I've said before, I think I was more emotional than I would be to win a semi final, I know we've not done anything yet but I just think for this club and team to get to Wembley is an amazing achievement."

Fulham came close to making the national stadium last season, but a 2-1 aggregate loss to Reading at the semi final stage saw the exact opposite range of emotions to what the side felt on Monday night.

Add to that the defeat at Birmingham City on the final day of the season and some believed that Fulham weren't able to hack it on the big occasion, but that's not had any impact on Cairney or his Fulham team mates.

They dominated the game once more against Derby, and he believes with the football they've played over the past two years, a play-off final is the least they deserve.

"It's been a two-year project and we've played amazing football over the last two seasons and it's the least everyone deserves," he added.

"Last few weeks I think there's been some negative comments about wheels falling off and playing our way and not creating chances.

(Image: Stephen Pond/Getty Images)

"But that's the way we've played for two years, we've dominated games and it wasn't going to change tonight and someone told me in 180 minutes Derby had two shots on target.

"For a team that finished third playing a team that finished sixth, what more do you want? "

There's now just under a two-week gap until Fulham take to the pitch at Wembley on May 26 in the final - a long time to wait after the emotion at Craven Cottage.

But Cairney knows Jokanovic won't be letting the side rest on their laurels and neither will the skipper, who knows his side haven't done anything yet.

(https://i2-prod.getwestlondon.co.uk/incoming/article14658317.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/Fulham-v-Derby-County-Sky-Bet-Championship-Play-Off-Semi-FinalSecond-Leg.jpg)
(Image: Mike Hewitt/Getty Images)

But thinking about a Wembley final? It's giving Cairney goosebumps already.

"I think the manager won't have anything else - we haven't done anything yet, it's an amazing night, it's what everyone deserves but there's one more game to go and one more 90 minutes.

"Thinking about it now gives me goosebumps."

Aleksandar Mitrovic is Wembley-bound with Fulham - and one step closer to a permanent Newcastle exit

Newcastle United will look to sell Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer, with Fulham desperate to make his loan move permanent

Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic insists "this is the reason" he joined Fulham as he prepares to head to Wembley later this month.

The Cottagers claimed a 2-0 victory over Derby County on Monday night, and overturned a 1-0 first-leg play-off semi-final deficit in the process.

Either Aston Villa or Middlesbrough now await Slavisa Jokanovic's side in the play-off final on May 26 - when Fulham will have a one-off opportunity to clinch a lucrative spot in the Premier League for next season.

If they do, then the Cottagers will likely use some of the £120million-plus windfall to try and sign Mitrovic permanently this summer.

Rafa Benitez is looking to offload Mitrovic and Newcastle are expected to demand more than £20m for the forward's services.

Fulham would like to keep the Serbia international in west London regardless of whether they are promoted, but winning the play-off final will certainly increase their chances of acquiring the 23-year-old on a permanent basis.

"This is the reason I came here. It is unbelievable," Mitrovic told Sky Sports News after the second-leg victory over Derby.

"I think we deserve to get promoted as we play good football and created chances. I am so proud and so happy."

Mitrovic has scored 12 goals in just 16 starts for the west London club since moving to the capital on loan in January, which is why Fulham are so keen to sign him permanently.

But, given that the Cottagers are far from the only admirers of Mitrovic - Marseille, Bordeaux, Anderlecht, Brighton and Hove Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers have all scouted the forward at various points over the past 12 months - United hope to start a potential bidding war for the striker's signature.

Tim Ream and Fulham one step from promotion to Premier League

While we await more news about D.C. United and Wayne Rooney, you should know that ...

>> U.S. defender Tim Ream and Fulham are one step from promotion to the Premier League after defeating Derby County, 2-0, at Craven Cottage to advance to the Championship's playoff final on 2-1 aggregate. Fulham will face Middlesbrough or Aston Villa on May 26 at Wembley, the Cottagers' first visit to the iconic stadium since the 1975 FA Cup final. They are seeking to return to the top flight for the first time since 2013-14.

>> Another American defender, Matt Miazga, is involved in a playoff as Vitesse faces Utrecht over two legs for a Europa League berth from the Dutch Eredivisie. The first match is today at Vitesse.

>> In Israel, American forward Aaron Schoenfeld and Maccabi Tel Aviv are home against Beitar "Trump" Jerusalem.

>> The U.S. national team isn't going to the World Cup, but several MLS players are headed to Russia. Federations submitted their provisional lists Monday and have until June 4 to finalize their 23-man squads. In a bit of a surprise, D.C. United midfielder Ulises Segura was not chosen by Costa Rica.

Denis Odoi: Fulham's playing style 'would suit Premier League'

Denis Odoi has only scored five times in two seasons with Fulham yet claimed the crucial goal against Derby

Fulham defender Denis Odoi thinks their style of play would allow them to settle quickly in the Premier League if they win promotion via the play-offs.

The Cottagers reached the Championship play-off final by beating Derby and will face either Aston Villa or Middlesbrough on Saturday, 26 May.

"A few of my friends play in the Premier League and they say we'd be a good team," Odoi told BBC Radio London.

"It is a big compliment but we are still not there so let's take it easy."

The 29-year-old Belgian added: "They all want us to go up as they like coming to Craven Cottage and it is a nice place to play football.

"I haven't played in the Premier League, but we may lose games as we play high [up the pitch] and try to play.

"Cardiff may not play the same style as we do but they got promoted automatically. Congrats to them and now we will try and get promoted with the way we play."

Fulham 'can beat anybody'

Fulham missed out on automatic promotion by two points after losing at Birmingham on the final day of the regular season.

They lost the first leg of their play-off semi-final 1-0 at Derby, but beat the Rams 2-0 in the return leg on Monday, with Odoi scoring the goal which won the tie 2-1 on aggregate.

Having been beaten at the semi-final stage of the play-offs last season, Odoi hopes Fulham can now return to the top flight following a four-year absence.

Manager Slavisa Jokanovic has guided Fulham to the play-offs for the second successive season

"We had a few chances to go up to the Premier League," he said.

"Last year was a big disappointment for us, then against Birmingham there was an opportunity and now hopefully third time is a charm."

Fulham will find out their Wembley opponents on Tuesday evening when Aston Villa host Middlesbrough, with Villa holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg.

"Whether it is Villa or Boro it doesn't really matter as it will be a tough game anyway," Odoi added.

"We respect our opponent but we need to look at ourselves and we know on a good day we can beat anybody.

"It will be hard if we get defeated at Wembley but you prefer to lose at Wembley than lose a semi-final. For now we will enjoy the victory and then we will start preparing for the final."

49-year-old on West Ham's 3-man shortlist to replace Moyes as boss

West Ham United have drawn up a three man shortlist to replace David Moyes as their next manager and Fulham's Slavisa Jokanovic is among them, according to a report by TEAMtalk.

Jokanovic is joined by Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez and Burnley's Sean Dyche on West Ham's wishlist.

The 49-year-old guided Fulham to the play-offs for the second time in two years and narrowly missed out on automatic promotion this season.

The Cottagers defeated Derby County last night to book their place in the Championship play-off final at Wembley against the winners of the tie between Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.

Jokanovic, who has also previously managed Watford, is a target for the Hammers, alongside Premier League duo Benitez and Dyche.

Benitez has been a long-term target for the Hammers, who had lined him up before getting Slaven Bilic, and the owners could move to bring him in if he walks away from Newcastle.

Burnley have had an excellent season under Dyche, who used last season's survival as his platform to qualify for the Europa League this term.

Moyes is set to leave West Ham after guiding them to safety with his contract expiring upon completion of the season.

TEAMtalk believes the Hammers have devised a three man wishlist, although other reports suggest Paulo Fonseca is among the candidates for the job.

The Verdict

Jokanovic would be an excellent appointment for West Ham as he would bring his fast-tempo style of play to the club and the West Ham fans would love it.

The Serbian deserves a chance at managing in the Premier League, even if Fulham fail to go up.

But if the Cottagers do win promotion, you can see Jokanovic continuing his project at Craven Cottage, rather than moving to West Ham.

'The most important game in four years' - why everything hinges on Fulham's Wembley final

The head coach knows the game on May 26 is the most important in the past four years, but he wants Fulham to show quality to win it

Fulham will show quality to win at Wembley in the play-off final, insists Slavisa Jokanovic.

The Whites made club history on Monday night when they won their first ever play-off game when Ryan Sessegnon and Denis Odoi goals overturned a 1-0 deficit to knock Derby County out.

It was a strong performance from Fulham and the celebrations went on long into the night, but Jokanovic isn't resting on his laurels - he knows the job isn't done.

Despite being satisfied they've reached the final, the head coach knows this is their most important game since being relegated from the Premier League.

But more importantly for him, is that his Fulham side show quality to win at Wembley in the play-off final on May 26.

He said: "When I can find benefits I start to be interested in stats, we didn't play 43 years in Wembley, this great for us.

"Today, after first half, last 20 years, nobody won the final, it's great we beat many records this year, for another side we're satisfied and proud and happy after this night.

"We know it's not enough to take the fans to Wembley, what we need is to start working for this game ahead of us.

'Something wrong with Gareth Southgate if he doesn't go' - Fans want Sessegnon at the World Cup

There's a lot of calls for Ryan Sessegnon to be taken to the World Cup by fans - here's what they had to say

Another Fulham game, another Ryan Sessegnon goal.

This time the 17-year-old wonderkid set his boyhood club on the way to their first trip to Wembley in 49 years after his goal gave Fulham the lead over Derby County on the night and the equaliser on aggregate, before Denis Odoi's header gave them the winning goal.

Gareth Southgate names his England squad for the World Cup on Wednesday, and after Sessegnon's performances this season there are calls from all over the country for the youngster to be on the plane that jets off to Russia for the tournament.

He's scored 16 goals for Fulham this season - their top scorer - and he's assisted seven times for the Craven Cottage outfit in just his second season in professional football.

Head coach, Slavisa Jokanovic, has been a big advocate of Sessegnon going to the World Cup, believing he has the ability to play at the top level despite his age, while England assistant manager Steve Holland has watched him play numerous times this season.

Fulham owner Shahid Khan has also given the youngster his backing, while names in football are also backing Sessegnon to head over to Russia with the England senior side after he won his first cap for the U21s in the last international break in March.

And fans are also calling for Sessegnon to be included in the squad, with a lot stating they'd even start him in Russia

This would be Fulham's most important summer signing – Agreed?

With Fulham slapping a whopping price tag on Ryan Sessegnon, it is clear that there is no intention within the club to let the young winger go.

This makes it all the more important for the Cottagers to convert Matt Targett's loan into a permanent transfer. The Southampton man has been essential in freeing up Sessegnon to go further forward and torment opposing full-backs. This move was one of the main reasons for Fulham's extraordinary second half of the campaign.

Yet his value is not just tied to his more hyped teammate. As well as contributing two assists and a goal, Targett puts in the joint most tackles per game (2) as well as finding 1.7 key passes per game, the third highest at the Cottage. He is clearly trusted by Slavisa Jokanovic, who has deployed him in every game and started him in every game since his debut. This saw him overtake Denis Odoi as first choice left back, before the Frenchman's conversion to centre-back. All this suggests a player that is worth making an investment in.

Targett is also likely to be interested in making the move. The positive atmosphere around SW6 following their unbeaten run and upcoming Wembley appearance will contrast sharply with the tension at the St Mary's stadium following their narrow escape from relegation. Combined with the lack of faith shown in him by Southampton during the first half of the season, it is hard to imagine the 22-year-old turning down such a move.

Ryan Sessegnon: Fulham Wonderkid For World Cup Call Up?

Arriving on the Fulham scene with a bang, 17-year-old Ryan Sessegnon has left pundits and fans questioning whether the call up to England for the world cup is a real possibility.

He made his debut for Fulham in 2016 making 25 appearances in the calendar season and finding the back of the net 5 times.

The 2017-18 season has seen Sessegnon appear in every single Fulham league game and snatch the top goal scorer spot (16) from team mate Aleksander Mitrovic (12).

The young guns fine form has now posed him as a potential World Cup wildcard for England, but might it be a bit too soon?

Yet to make an appearance for the national 1st team, most fans believe putting such pressure on him so young could ruin his potential.

Sessegnon helped England U19 to their 2017 European Championship victory scoring two goals in their final group stage game against Germany U19 finishing 4-1.

He then went on to start in their final two fixtures against Czech Republic (1-0 win) and Portugal (2-1 win).

Sessegnon's latest performance on Monday night saw him initiate a Fulham comeback from a first leg 1 goal deficit against Derby in the Championship play-offs semi-final.

The final will be played at Wembley on the 26th May 2018 giving Sessegnon chance to prove his worth on a big stage.

Gareth Southgate is said to be releasing the 23-man England squad later this week, leaving him with a big decision to make over the young winger's attendance.

Fulham owner Shahid Khan has no doubt that Ryan Sessegnon is ready for the England senior side

Gareth Southgate names his England squad for the World Cup on Wednesday and Fulham owner Shahid Khan has been an advocate of Sessegnon's inclusion

Fulham Chairman Shahid Khan has revealed that he has no doubt in his mind that Ryan Sessegnon is an England international, and is backing him for a World Cup call-up.

Gareth Southgate picks his squad that will travel to Russia for the World Cup on Wednesday and there are fresh calls to include the wonderkid in the team after his goal helped Fulham on their way to the play-off final on Tuesday.

Sessegnon made his U21 debut back in March, but he's been in scintillating form for his club this season, scoring 16 goals and assisting seven as the Whites look to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Although U21 boss Aidy Boothroyd felt in March that the U21s was the right place for Sessegnon, Slavisa Jokanovic has backed him for an England call-up from the get-go, while Mr Khan thinks there's no doubt that the youngster should be in Gareth Southgate's senior squad for the World Cup.

Speaking in Fulham's programme notes before the QPR game back in March, he said: "I've been encouraged in recent weeks to hear respected voices in football say what I've been thinking about Ryan, whose promise of a brilliant future should not belie the fact that his class today is worthy of the game's greatest stages.

"It's no secret there's interest in Ryan from some of the most celebrated clubs in the world, and that doesn't occur by hype or accident.

"In Ryan, they see the excellence that we know, and the quality that we have.

"If not for our commitment to keeping Ryan despite intense interest shown in him during the past two transfer windows, he would be featuring in top-flight football today.

"And, as we've all seen over the past two seasons, Ryan is more than capable of competing against various international talents that we encounter in the Championship.

"In my eyes, Ryan is an England international.

"Please know, I understand that assembling the right players for a World Cup requires a deft hand, and the scrutiny on national team selection in England is at a level unlike anywhere in the world.

"Of course, I'll respect the decisions of Gareth Southgate and wish England all the best in Rusisia.

"I'm all in on the Three Lions and, in the case of supporting Ryan for selection, I'm doing it just as much as a fan of the game and a young dynamic talent as I am as Chairman of Fulham.

Cairney once again shows his worth to Fulham

Fulham booked their spot in the Championship playoff final with a 2-0 win over Derby County in the second leg of their semi-final on Monday night.

Derby took a 1-0 lead into the second leg of their last-four tie, but goals from Ryan Sessegnon and Denis Odoi at Craven Cottage saw the capital outfit record a 2-1 aggregate success.

Sessegnon's goal and indeed performance took a lot of the attention once again, but there is no question that Tom Cairney's display in the middle of the park was a key contributor in the Cottagers advancing to the final.

Cairney has been strongly linked with a move away from Fulham, with Newcastle United and Leicester City among the Premier League clubs believed to be interested.

Both would have been watching the 27-year-old closely on Monday night, and it proved to be another fine performance from the midfielder.

Cairney, who is valued at £13.5m by transfermarkt.co.uk, managed two shots and three dribbles during his time on the field, but it was his use of the ball that made the biggest impression on the night.

Indeed, a pass success rate of 93%, coupled with 87 accurate passes and 108 touches are very impressive numbers for a central midfielder in a match of such magnitude.

Derby did not make it easy for Cairney to find space, but the former Leeds United youngster was so calm in possession, and a lot of Fulham's good work went through the midfielder.

Fulham will now be bidding to win the Championship playoff final, and they will surely need to secure Premier League promotion this season to stand any chance of keeping one of the most talented players outside of the top flight.

Could Fulham inflict more damage on Derby with summer move for Matej Vydra?

The Derby County top scorer should be well known to Fulham and their manager.

Several Derby County fans fear the sale of Matej Vydra after the Rams' play-off exit at the hands of Fulham on Tuesday.

Derby cashed in on key men Thomas Ince and Will Hughes to fund last summer's spending spree, and look like having to do likewise again after their chairman, Mel Morris, vowed not to make further significant investments should they fail to go up.

While the 26-year-old's position, which can be anywhere across the forward line, is one in which Fulham could look to strengthen during the summer transfer window, especially with the loan spells of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Lucas Piazon coming to an end.

And, as someone whose best work tends to come from a deeper role, Vydra would be a useful replacement for the latter player in particular.

What could be an issue is Fulham's ability to afford the former Udinese man - an eight-figure player, on this season's form - albeit one their promotion would surely eradicate.

But even with this their final year of parachute payments, the Cottagers have several assets of their own on whom they could cash in if not - notably Ryan Sessegnon and Tom Cairney.

Vydra to the Cottage? It could be one to keep an eye on.

Player Ratings- Fulham v Derby
by Lydia on May 15, 2018

Resident teacher Lydia gives her marks out of 10 for the boys for last night's win over Derby County

What a night.

Where should I begin? It's hard for me to not give every player 10/10 for purely sentimental reasons, and because I was such an emotional wreck last night that the game is now pretty much a complete blur, but I'll try to be logical with my ratings as possible.

Marcus Bettinelli- 7

Our man between the sticks wasn't massively tested last night but stood firm when he was called into action. He did make a key save from Cameron Jerome shortly after Fulham had pulled themselves level on aggregate which was crucial. His distribution was very good and he set AK away with a monstrous throw just before half time that led to a good chance. The sight of him waving a Fulham flag while being carried on the shoulders of fans at the end of the game was simply beautiful.

Matt Targett- 7

That old cliché 'a game of two halves' fits perfectly when it comes to the Southampton loanees' performance. In the first half he looked nervous and gave the ball away on a number of occasions while too many of his corners failed to beat the first man. He did put a pinpoint cross in for Mitrovic which would have opened the scoring but for a fantastic save from Scott Carson, but it was a poor half in general for the right back. The second half couldn't have been more of a contrast though. I can't remember him giving the ball away once and it was his cross to Johansen that helped to set up the first goal. If that's the last time he will play for Fulham at the Cottage then it's the sort of performance to bow out with.

Denis Odoi- 8

Scored the winner with one of the best headers I have ever seen live. One of the shortest men on the pitch, the Belgium out jumped everybody else to guide his header beyond the stranded Carson. There was a split second when his header hit the back of the net were nobody moved as 25,000 people tried to process what had just happened, but when the realisation hit that we were in front there was an explosion by the Thames. Aside from the goal I thought Odoi's performance was brilliant. I can understand why Slav prefers him to Kalas because he is much better with the ball at his feet and while this sometimes causes minor heart attacks amongst the support, it's an important aspect of our play.

Tim Ream- 9

Without a doubt our defensive hero. Wins headers for fun and did a brilliant job of keeping Jerome, Edwards, Vydra and Lawrence reasonably quiet throughout. He did have a nervy moment when he sent the ball back to Bettinelli under zero pressure with a bit too much on it resulting in a corner, inviting unnecessary pressure, but overall it was another assured performance from the American.

Ryan Fredericks- 6

Fredericks has looked tired recently and last night wasn't one of his better performances. He whipped up and down the line as usual but his final ball didn't really cause too much trouble in the Derby box, which was frustrating considering he got himself into a lot of good positions. Unless Fredericks reaches the byline his crossing can be questionable. He did nearly open the scoring with a thunderous effort in the first half but Carson got his fingertips to the shot. Overall, I reckon Fredericks will be keen to improve on last night's showing at Wembley.

Kevin McDonald- 8

Give the man the armband next season. I wrote in a previous article that McDonald has become the player that we were missing for so long since the likes of Dickson Etuhu. He sits just in front of the defence providing a level of protection whilst also allowing the more creative players to do their thing further up the pitch. My moment of the match was just after Odoi's header when Derby made a couple of subs so McDonald used the opportunity to gee up every side of the ground. He also made a number of key tackles when Derby looked to go on the break. It was a powerful performance from the Scotsman.

Tom Cairney- 8

Cairney has received a bit of criticism recently, but last night was much more of the player we saw for much of last season. He controlled the game and was a calm head in the centre of the park which is exactly what we needed from our captain. Perhaps should have done better with his tame effort in the first half but his range of passing was eye catching. I had thought that he over played the ball a few times, but on each occasion, he kept the ball under pressure from a number of Derby midfielders and I can't actually think of an occasion when he gave the ball away! He looked genuinely emotional walking onto the pitch and he thrived off the atmosphere.

Stefan Johansen- 9

After a dreadful game for Stef Jo at Pride Park on Friday night, last night he was fantastic. He covered every blade of grass and was part of so much good about Fulham. He tested Carson on a number of occasions and set up the goal for Sess with a beautiful chest down from Targett's cross. While I have been a critic of Johansen's nasty side this season, I won't lie and say that I didn't go nuts with excitement when he took down Jerome and earned a blatant yellow card. You need players to take one for the team on occasion which can be the difference between winning and losing at times.

Ryan Sessegnon- 9

Got the equaliser and then the assist for the winner. It was the sort of level headed performance that we sometimes don't even see from the most experienced of players in the biggest of games never mind from a seventeen-year-old. Last season he showed enough bottle to silence a boisterous St James' Park crowd, so I have absolute faith that he can do it at Wembley. His movement for the first goal was an example of just how good he is. Just pulling away from Wisdom and Keogh in a split second allowing Johansen to find him and then the composure to take a touch and rifle his effort into the roof of the net was marvellous. The boy has an incredible future ahead of him, and I am so chuffed that we have gotten to see him grow and flourish so much over the past few seasons.

AK47- 8

What a stroke of genius from Slav to throw him in the side ahead of Ayite or Piazon. He is easily the most improved player in this Fulham side since the summer and is an example of just how good Slav and co's coaching really is. The Villa defence had no idea what to do with him and you get the feeling that he will start at Wembley as well. He would have gotten 9/10 if it wasn't for his dive, although I have to say that I found that absolutely hilarious at the time. However, he can't make a habit of it as referee's will cotton on quick.

Aleksandar Mitrovic- 9

Curtis Davies had a lot joy taking care of Mitrovic on Friday night but last night he will have left the Cottage with nothing but nightmares. Although he didn't score, Mitrovic was vital to so many of Fulham's attack whether it was holding up play, drawing defenders in or else just turning them and having a go himself. It was the sort of performance that is nearly impossible to play against as a defender, and shows why he has been so key to Fulham's form since January. 3 games is the longest he has went without scoring for Fulham so surely he will get one at Wembley, yeah?

Subs

Neither Kalas or Norwood were really on for long enough but both players came on and did exactly what was required of them for us to see the game out.

Roll on Wembley.

#COYW

Aston Villa see off Middlesbrough to set up Fulham final

Championship play-off semi-final second leg, Villa Park - Aston Villa 0 Middlesbrough 0, Aston Villa, progress 1-0 on aggregate

Aston Villa will face Fulham in the Championship play-off final after Steve Bruce side's beat Middlesbrough 1-0 on aggregate.

A goalless draw at Villa Park on Tuesday ultimately sent Villa through to their first-ever play-off final, with Boro failing to record a shot on target on the night.

However, there was a contentious moment late on as Sam Johnstone saved Adama Traore's effort outside the box – Mike Dean opted to show the Villa 'keeper a yellow, with Stewart Downing going on to see his free-kick cannon off the bar.

Villa survived that late scare, meaning it's third-placed Fulham against fourth-placed Villa for the right to play Premier League football next year.

TALKING POINT

Fulham the favourites? It was a dogged defensive showing from the boys in claret and blue, and though Boro offered little going forward, Fulham will be wary of how difficult this Villa side are to break down, particularly with John Terry leading them at the back.

However, you'd fancy Fulham to be favourites going into the final on May 26. Not only did they finish above Villa, and edge their two league matches this season 3-2 on aggregate, but they also have that bit of flair going forward - their second-half display against Derby on Monday was the standout showing of the semis.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Mile Jedinak – By no means a classic, with no standout performances, but Villa were solid as a unit. Jedinak proved an immovable force in front of their defence, reducing Boro to half-chances, until that late drama...

PLAYER RATINGS

Aston Villa: Johnstone 6, Bree 6, Chester 7, Terry 7, Hutton 6, Snodgrass 6, Hourihane 6, Jedinak 7, Adomah 6, Grealish 7, Grabban 6. Subs: Kodjia 6, Whelan NA, Bjarnason NA

Boro: Randolph 6, Shotton 6, Fry 7, Gibson 6, Friend 7, Clayton 6, Besic 6, Howson 5, Traore 6, Downing 6, Assombalonga 5. Subs: Bamford 6, Gestede NA, Fabio NA

KEY MOMENTS

39' - WIDE! And there's the first big chance of the game. Boro can't deal with a cross and the loose ball falls to Chester 10 yards out. However, he can't direct his effort on target when striking on the turn.

53' - JUST WIDE! Besic takes the ball in his stride 20 yards out and unleashes a low strike. It actually looks as though it flicks off Chester and wide, but a goal-kick is given.

61' - SAVE! Fine move from Villa ends with Adomah rolling the ball over for Grabban, but there is Randolh to make a point-blank save. Vital stop to keep the visitors in this one.

76' - SAVE! Patient build-up play from Villa, and Grealish dances past Clayton before whipping a fierce effort towards the far corner, but Randoplh does superbly to get over and palm it away.

88' - WOW! Should Johnstone see red here??? The Villa keeper comes out of his area and as Terry heads the ball into the air, Traore shoots - but there is Johnstone to palm it away - OUTSIDE THE AREA. Free-kick to Boro 20 yards out, but should Villa be down to 10 men???

89' - OFF THE BAR! Would you believe it, from the resulting free-kick, Downing's fierce effort cannons off the bar. A huge let-off for Villa.

Aston Villa 0-0 Middlesbrough (1-0 agg): Goalless draw seals Villa's path to Wembley

Aston Villa are through to the Sky Bet Championship play-off final after holding off Middlesbrough at Villa Park on Tuesday night.

Mile Jedinak's header had given Villa the advantage to take into the second leg, and a nervy goalless draw was enough for Steve Bruce's side to ensure their passage to Wembley.

Boro, in truth, rarely threatened on the night and struggled to get their key threat in Adama Traore into the game. Villa, meanwhile, will now face Fulham for a place in the Premier League.

Team news

Both sides made one enforced change from the first leg. James Bree came in for Ahmed Elmohamady at right-back for the home side while Dael Fry started in Middlesbrough's defence ahead of Daniel Ayala.

The only real opening in the first half fell Villa's way after 39 minutes as the ball ricocheted its way to James Chester in the box, but he could only pull his effort wide of the target.

Villa would have the next big chance of the game as well just before the hour mark. Albert Adomah, up against his old club, raced down the left and found Lewis Grabban in the middle, but Darren Randolph got off his line quickly to deny the striker from close range.

Bruce's side were working hard to put the tie to bed, and went close again with 15 minutes to go as Jack Grealish worked himself some space to shoot from the edge of the area, but Randolph was there again to deny Villa with a flying save.
Player ratings

Aston Villa: Johnstone (6), Bree (7), Chester (7), Terry (8), Hutton (7), Snodgrass (6), Hourihane (7), Jedinak (8), Adomah (7), Grealish (8), Grabban (5)

Subs: Whelan (n/a), Bjarnason (n/a), Kodjia (n/a)

Middlesbrough: Randolph (7), Shotton (6), Fry (7), Gibson (7), Friend (6), Clayton (6), Besic (6), Howson (6), Traore (5), Downing (5), Assombalonga (6)

Subs: Fabio (n/a), Bamford (n/a), Gestede (n/a)

Man of the match: Mile Jedinak

And there was controversy late on as Boro pushed desperately forward for a goal. Traore found his way through and tried to lift the ball over Sam Johnstone, who handballed outside the area to give away a free-kick, but referee Mike Dean saw fit to only book the goalkeeper, while Stewart Downing would rattle the crossbar with the resulting set-piece that would turn out to be their final chance.
Man of the match - Mile Jedinak

Jedinak produced a massive performance in the centre of Villa's midfield. He covered every blade of grass of the Villa Park pitch to his back four, winning headers, tackles and second balls to help his side get over the line.

Let's also not forget he scored the crucial goal in the first leg that proved to be the difference between the two sides in the end.

The managers...

Steve Bruce: "We've just shaded it over the two games. We've got a goal from a set-piece which has won two games, basically. There's not much in the teams but I don't think they've had a shot on target in the two games. That stood us in good stead, obviously."

Tony Pulis: "We've had good spells in both games, but we had to create a little bit more and score goals. That's been the difference really, a set play has cost us over the two games."
When's the play-off final?

The Sky Bet Championship play-off final is at Wembley on Saturday, May 26, live on Sky Sports Football with kick-off at 5pm.

Championship playoffs: Fulham deny Ryan Sessegnon birthday present
FULHAM'S players will not be buying Ryan Sessegnon an 18th birthday present – unless he scores the winner in the Championship play off final at Wembley.

Fulham's brilliant youngster only turns 18 on Friday, but the teenager rated as possibly the best prospect outside the Premier League proved his worth yet again on Monday night when he scored one and made another as Fulham beat Derby 2-0 to clinch a place at Wembley on Saturday week.

Sessegnon is being hunted by both Tottenham and Liverpool among other top flight clubs, but his teammate Tim Ream, the USA defender, believes none of that, or the prospect of playing at Wembley, will faze a player who is taking everything in his stride right now at a remarkably young age.

Ream said: "What are we getting him for his birthday – the team? Nothing at all. If he scores at Wembley I'm sure we will get him something."

But the former Bolton defender added: "Ryan has done some incredible things this season. There is no doubting his talent, his ability, his work-rate and his attitude.

"It's something that you don't often see with young players these days. He's completely different to any of the young players who are up and coming, in every aspect of his game.

Ryan Sessegnon fired Fulham into the Championship playoff final

"You can't argue with his approach this year – 16 goals now? It's just amazing what he's done and what he continues to do.

"I don't see why playing at Wembley is going to be any different for him. I've never seen a kid so calm in the face of everything. He doesn't yearn for the limelight. He doesn't want it. Or rather he does not ask for it.

"He just goes about his business and does his own thing. Nobody needs to change his approach, nobody needs to change him. He's taken everything as it has come this year and done it like a 35 year old veteran. It's amazing."

Ream, though, warned his team and their fans: "The job is not finished. We have to go to Wembley with the same mindset that we went in with on Monday."
