Tottenham Hotspur will be aiming to maintain their winning start to the campaign by claiming the scalps of Fulham when the Cottagers visit Wembley this Saturday. Harry Kane was once again cursed by his August hoodoo and failed to get on the scoresheet, but Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli saved the day with a goal each.

Spurs won the game against Newcastle United 1-2 and will be looking forward to beating a Fulham side that were unfortunate to come away with a point against Crystal Palace last weekend.

Dier brings a sense of stability and security in the middle of the park. His ability to pop up with goals out of the blue makes him an enticing option.

Heung-Min Son's involvement in the Asian Games should see Moura receive a regular run of fixtures. This is his time to step up and show the manager what he is capable of.
Christian Eriksen (CAM)

There's no substitute in the squad for Christian Eriksen. He either plays or he doesn't, and not playing him could cost Spurs their game.
Dele Alli (LAM)

Despite the criticism around Alli's performances, the man tends to deliver whenever Spurs need him the most. He'll be aiming to pull off his entertaining goal celebrations in front of his own fans.

Kane's August hoodoo has once again struck the player, but the England captain loves to prove his critics wrong and there's every chance he'll go all-out in this game.

Whenever a team is promoted from the Championship, especially one which has already had a taste of Premier League football, it is vital that the team invests to get their team up to scratch. It is true that the Championship is one of the hardest leagues in world football, but the level of the Premier League is so high, that a different set of skills is required for teams to survive. If you were to look at any betting site back in May, you would have seen Fulham as favourites for the drop this year, yet here we are in August, with the Cottagers odds on to finish in 14th spot, and Betolimp live betting even had them odds on to beat Palace at the weekend. The reason for this new opinion of the London outfit is the transfers which they have brought in, and here is why the perfectly managed the window, and why they will be just fine this year.

Bold

The Fulham board have done something this year that few newly promoted clubs do, in being bold in the transfer market and supporting their manager. The board were bold in bringing in players such as Jean Michel Seri, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Andre Anguissa, spending more than £60 million on the three players. Fulham have not only been bold in how much they have spent on transfers – their net spend was £131 million – but they have also been spending in other areas too bringing in 6 loan deals with costly wages.

Loans

Aside from the money that the board have invested in transfers, they have been smart enough to tie down some great loan deals. We all know the dangers of buying too many new players, and then being stuck with them when you get relegated like with QPR back in 2013, so Fulham have been smart in this approach.

Experience

People often talk about older players as offering experience, but for clubs like Fulham, they simply need players who know what the Premier League is all about. This is where Fulham have really struck gold, having brought in Mitrovic, Alfie Mawson, Fosu-Mensah, Calum Chambers and Andre Schurlle. These are players who will not be surprised by the pace of the league or its challenges, and they are also players who, with the exception of Schurlle, will not have to uproot their personal lives too much in order to make the move.

Class

Not only have Fulham covered all of the positions where they lacked last year, and added squad depth, they have also brought in some real class to help them fight for safety this year. Andre Schurlle is a World Cup winner who has played at the highest level of world football, and is still just 27, arguably in his prime. Jean Michel Seri is a masterstroke of a deal, the 26 year old bossed the Nice midfield last year, providing over 23 assists and 8 goals in all competitions, and with Mitrovic who is still just 23 years old, they have the most important piece of the puzzle, a goal scorer.

Fulham will be just fine this year, because of the great work which they've done in the window, other teams should take note.

It's Back To Wembley This Saturday But Fulham Need To End A Remarkable Record To Take Anything From This Game

This Saturday, Fulham make the short journey across London to take on Tottenham Hotspur.

The fixture, courtesy of the new White Hart Lane not being completed, will take place at Wembley Stadium, the scene of our fantastic Championship play-off final win against Aston Villa.

After not having played at Wembley for so long, it is a pleasurable feeling to be able to return to the famous stadium again so quickly.

However, whereas against Aston Villa the Fulham hordes were able to fill half of the stadium, this time tickets are in short supply with Tottenham supporters filling the vast majority of what is now their second home.

Ahead of the game, we have some early news relating to player availability.

Heung-min Son unavailable for Spurs as he is at Asian Games

Mauricio Pochettino has called for a positive outlook as Tottenham start a longer-than-expected run at Wembley with their Premier League game against Fulham on Saturday.

The London derby against the newly-promoted Cottagers was meant to be Tottenham's only scheduled match at Wembley this season.

However, it was announced this week that the opening of their new stadium has been delayed until at least October over safety concerns.

That means Spurs look set to play three more home games at Wembley.

"We need to be all together," said Spurs boss Pochettino. "Our fans understand it's a massive, huge project that will be forever for them and for the club and it's not possible for different things that happen, it's not in our hands. The most import thing is to be positive."

Spurs, who won at Newcastle on the opening day, initially struggled at Wembley last season as they lost to Chelsea and drew with Burnley and Swansea.

However, they did adapt to life at the national stadium and finished the campaign strongly at home.

Fulham lost to Crystal Palace last weekend but return to Wembley with good memories having been promoted as Championship play-off winners last season.

"It's a great opportunity," said manager Slavisa Jokanovic. "We have fought for the opportunity to play against teams like Spurs."

@SimonBrotherton: Fulham might be happier to play at Wembley than their hosts this weekend. May's play-off win over Aston Villa will be fresh in the memory for the newly-promoted side, while Spurs were hoping this would be the last match at their temporary home before the opening of their new stadium.

That's no longer the case and with the club apologising to fans, the whole situation is further complicated because an NFL game is booked at Wembley on the day they're supposed to host Manchester City in late October.

Amid the off-field turmoil, Tottenham at least made a winning start at Newcastle last week, while Fulham are still waiting to get off the mark after falling at home to Crystal Palace.

However, the Cottagers are looking for their first points in the top-flight after losing 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace on the opening weekend.

Team news

Alfie Mawson is yet to feature for the Cottagers following his move from Swansea City due to a knee injury while fellow defenders Tim Ream (injury) and Denis Odoi (suspension) are also unavailable. Floyd Ayité missed Fulham's league opener at Crystal Palace last week but has returned to training while left-back Joe Bryan is fit after suffering an ankle knock against Palace.

One to watch

There is plenty of intrigue surrounding Ryan Sessegnon as the 18-year-old embarks on his maiden Premier League campaign.

Having made his debut at the start of the 2016/17 season, aged 16, the youth team prodigy went on to score seven times in all competitions and was named in the Championship's PFA Team of the Year. He then struck three goals to help England become Under-19 European champions in the summer.

Last season he was a pivotal part of Fulham's promotion-winning side, scoring 15 league goals and being named the EFL Player and Young Player of the Year.

Previous clash

Harry Kane stole the show with a hat-trick when we travelled to Craven Cottage for a tricky FA Cup fifth round tie in February, 2017.

Our number 10 swept in Christian Eriksen's 16th-minute cross to put us in front and we dominated thereafter. The same players combined for our second six minutes after half-time before Harry surged onto Dele Alli's pass and finished with his customary aplomb to seal victory, and his treble, with 17 minutes remaining.

Fulham's form

The Cottagers' Premier League opener did not go to plan as they suffered a 2-0 reverse at home to Crystal Palace, Jeffrey Schlupp and Wilfried Zaha on target for Roy Hodgson's side.

Having beaten Crawley Town 4-2, they failed to score in four of their final five pre-season friendlies, losing to Fenerbahçe, Lyon and Sampdoria before drawing 2-2 with Celta Vigo in their final warm-up game.

Those results bore little resemblance to the form they showed on their way to promotion at the end of last season, when they won 20 and only lost two of their final 27 games.

Magic moment

Charismatic central midfielder Sandro wasn't afraid to take shots on from range – and that certainly paid off in our 3-0 Premier League victory at Craven Cottage on 1 December, 2012.

With the scores level in the 55th minute, the Brazilian collected the ball on the edge of the centre circle, advanced a couple of steps and cracked a low shot past goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer from some 35 yards.

Jermain Defoe later added a brace to complete the scoring as we controlled the second-half proceedings.

Played for both

Mousa Dembele joined us from Fulham in August, 2012, and has gone on to be a firm fans' favourite in his six years at the club. He spent two full seasons at Craven Cottage following his move from AZ Alkmaar, where he won the Dutch title in 2009, scoring seven times in 75 appearances.

The former Germinal Beerschot and Willem II midfielder has now made 233 appearances for us, scoring 10 goals, and has featured in four of our five games against Fulham since his move across London.

Former Spurs players Ryan Fredericks and David Button left Fulham at the end of last season while Scott Parker, who moved from Spurs to Craven Cottage in 2013, is currently first team coach there having overseen our Under-18 side last term.

Fulham boss Slaviša Jokanović admitted: "We know a tough game is ahead of us. This year in this stadium (Wembley), only (Manchester) City and Juventus won against them. But this is a great opportunity for us to test ourselves again against one of the top English and European teams.

"We know very well we must be solid and available to work off the ball. We know this team is probably going to take possession off us, and we must be ready to work all together off the ball and show solidarity and great effort.

"In some part of the defensive work, you don't have to be so talented, (but) you must be clever, organised, and show great decision-making off the ball."

Fulham leading the way on season ticket values...Newcastle United are one of the worst

The new Premier League season is underway, the transfer window has closed – but which fans are getting real value for money this season?

The research has looked into the value around the Premier League, looking at season ticket price coupled with the average wage for a person around the area.

And well, it is good news for the newly promoted teams – with Fulham coming out on top!

Fulham were one of the biggest spenders in the Premier League and Europe this summer, indeed they were the first newly promoted side ever to spend in excess of £100million.

And that means even more great value for them, the evidence shows that Fulham are offering great value to the loyal Whites followers.

Their cheapest season ticket comes out at £349, and that is just 1% of the average income of their fans which is £33,883.

Fulham come out on top just ahead of fellow new boys Cardiff City – whose fans can get a ticket priced at just 1.2% of their average income.

But it is not just the smaller club proving value, with champions Manchester City and big spending Chelsea also amongst the best.

City came in fourth with their fans needing to spend just 1.4% of their income on the cheapest ticket, whilst Chelsea came out at 1.8% – which again might be seen as good value considering they spent £128million in the summer transfer market – the second most in England.


At the other end of the spectrum, it is not so good news for the followers of Liverpool, Tottenham and even Newcastle United.

Liverpool's fans cheapest option is £685, and with the city's average wage being just £21,762 – that is a whopping 3.1% of their average income – although the Reds fans will have been pleased with their club's summer in the transfer market, as they were the biggest in England after shelling out nearly £170million on new players.

Spurs fans are a little better off as their average wage is that much better in the capital at £27,367  but tickets at th new White Hart Lane are not cheap at £795 – indeed only rivals Arsenal have the most expensive cheapest ticket in the league.

Coupled with the fact Spurs spent nothing this summer, and their fans are still yet to see their new stadium finished – it has not been a great time for Tottenham followers.

But third worst, are Newcastle – but their fans already insist they are getting poor value for money. The cheapest seat at St James' Park will set you back £571 and coupled with the city's average wage of £21,086 – that is 2.7% of their wage – which is one of the worst in the Premier League.

OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton commented: "Tottenham and Newcastle fans – already disgruntled from their lack of transfer activity, probably will not be surprised to see themselves amongst the worst value – indeed it will probably just add to their current mood, especially for Newcastle fans."

Slavisa Jokanovic has challenged Marcus Bettinelli and his other keepers to fight for the number one jersey at Fulham amidst speculation of the 26-year-old's unhappiness at being left out.

The club brought in Fabri and Sergio Rico over the summer as the Cottagers looked to strengthen their side in order to compete in the Premier League, but decided on signing two to cover any potential injures, like the one Bettinelli suffered in pre-season.

But the 26-year-old came out on Twitter before the defeat to Crystal Palace on the opening day to assure fans he wasn't injured, but the head coach revealed in his post-match press conference that Bettinelli had returned to training that week and he had taken the decision not to select him.

That has led to reports that the keeper may consider his future at Craven Cottage, but speaking ahead of the trip to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, Jokanovic has challenged all three of keepers to fight for the starting spot and to not show a soft character.

He said: "I have three goalkeepers and I will choose only one - one of them will be in the stand, one will be on the bench and one will be in the goal.

"It's the same situation, we created the competition and it's the same situation for Bettinelli and other keepers as it is for other parts of the squad.

"When you ask me why Bettinelli is not in the goal, I am talking about we make some investment for another player, and this is a player who has experience in higher level and has some experience in the Champions League and Europa League.

"For another side, the situation with Marcus Bettinelli during the pre-season forced us to bring in another keeper too, and this other keeper is a quality keeper who has similar experience to be a Champions League keeper and has won some European trophies.

"This is a fantastic situation for a head coach like me, the three keepers are in the same situation and they must fight for the position and in my hands is the decision what I believe is best for my team.

"First of all, it's not question about number one, I don't choose number two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten.

Slavisa Jokanovic says Fulham need time to adapt to the Premier League ahead of emotional Wembley return

Fulham's 12 summer signings may need more time to adapt to the Premier Legaue

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic admitted it will take longer for Fulham to adapt to life in the Premier League as they return to Wembley for the first time since their play-off victory in May.

The promoted side heavily recruited in the summer and only four of the players that started the play-off final started in the 2-0 defeat against Crystal Palace in Fulham's opening Premier League match.

Jokanovic said they have been working on building team "spirit" and must quickly gel together to start producing their best football.

Fulham were renowned in the Championship for playing quick, attacking football, and Jokanovic knows that they may need a little longer before they reach similar heights in the top-tier.

"We have many new players and will need time," he said ahead of facing Tottenham on Saturday. "We worked well this week, building our team spirit and working on the way we want to play football.

"We must be patient and I believe we signed quality players without any work so it's complicated for them," he added.

"We know we started building one Championship team and try making one Premier League team, this is a normal way for us and in this process we must be ready to adapt new players for the level they are at."

Jokanovic, who was speaking at a news conference on his birthday, is relishing taking his Fulham side back to Wembley to face Tottenham, three months after beating Aston Villa 1-0 in the play-off final.

"It's great, now is different because we return as a Premier League team in a different competition. It's amazing and [there's a] great challenge ahead of us and we will try to do our best and try to be competitive and fight for points."

Fulham were perhaps unfortunate to come up against such a good counter-attacking side in Crystal Palace in their opening match given they have not perfected their style of play, but will face a very different challenge against Spurs.

"They are a difficult team in offensive and defensive," he said of Maurico Pochettino's team. "We know they are going to press us and are really strong defensively.

The Fulham manager said he has been working on an organised defensive plan to stop Harry Kane, and suggested that the England striker struggled to score goals in August because "it's too hot for him."

Charged with stopping Tottenham's main man is a fractured defence. Tim Ream and Alfie Mawson remain short of match fitness, while Denis Odoi continues his suspension after a red card in last season's play-off final. However, left-back Joe Bryan has recovered from an ankle problem that forced him off against Palace last week.

Fulham's campaign in the Premier League brings them back to a heartwarming place against Tottenham Hotspur. Nick MacNee assesses Spurs before Saturday's game.

The Manager
Since his arrival in the Premier League in early 2013 at Southampton, Mauricio Pochettino's reputation has grown steadily and steadily, to the point where he could arguably be considered one of the three best managers in the Premier League. He's nurtured exciting young talents in Harry Kane and Dele Alli, introduced an attacking based style of play with emphasis on possession and solidified Spurs as a Champions League team.

He's young, bright and one of the shining managerial lights in the Premier League. However, the question that surrounds him is "Where is his next move?" Real Madrid were interested in this past summer but didn't make any contact with Spurs and ultimately opted for Julen Lopetegui. Poch's Espanyol connections rule out Barcelona. Perhaps a certain Manchester United will tire of a Portuguese grump and look to the future...

The Window
They did nothing. Nada. Zero. Zilch. They became the first team to do no business in a transfer window since the introduction of the summer transfer window in 2003. They didn't even loan out anyone! Quite remarkable really.

The Players
The likes of Kane, Eriksen, Alli and Vertonghen need no introduction really. They are as good as players get in the Premier League and have formed the spine of a Spurs team for the past three years under Poch's rein. Kane is the best striker in the Premier League and has a very good chance of breaking Alan Shearer's goalscoring record.

Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli have all been mooted with Gareth Bale-esque moves to Real Madrid at some point in their careers (and the latter probably will at some stage) while Jan Vertonghen is arguably the Premier League's best centre back. We haven't even got to Davinson Sanchez, Hugo Lloris, Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele yet.

Make no mistake, this is the best team Fulham have played since, well, Tottenham in the FA Cup back in February 2017. Perhaps what is testament to Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino is how none of their key players outside of Kyle Walker has left since that cup game, although whether you put that down to Levy's hardline stance on transfers or Poch's desperation to hold onto players is up to you.

Their Last Match
Spurs defeated Newcastle 2-1 at St. James Park, thanks to goals from Alli and Vertonghen. Despite largely playing a 433 formation throughout pre-season, Poch went back to the tried and trusted 4231 that has served Tottenham so well, with Eriksen, Alli and January signing Lucas Moura lining up as the three attacking midfielders behind Kane.

The centre midfield pairing is certainly of interest though. Moussa Sissoko is a pariah amongst Spurs fans due to his tendencies to play like a loose cannon and look not really sure about what he's doing on a football pitch. Eric Dier is a good player but extremely defensive focused and more a third centre back than defensive midfielder. He is not the perfect picture of mobility though. Spurs did get away with it ultimately though against a midfield of Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame, another midfield that can't exactly be classified as mobile.

Despite the win, warning signs did flash for Spurs. Newcastle hit the woodwork twice in the second half through Diame and Salomon Rondon and can be considered perhaps unlucky to have lost the game. Despite his excellent assist for Alli's goal, Serge Aurier is very much a defensive liability at right back and extremely turnover prone, losing the ball three times at RB against Newcastle. Their World Cup squadron has had little rest and almost all of them were thrown back into the starting XI on Saturday. Plus, Harry Kane still hasn't scored in August! Surely, this can continue past Saturday's... ah, who am I kidding, of course he's going to score against us.

The Lineup
It'd be hard to see Pochettino making too many changes after winning against Newcastle, although I suspect he may bring back Mousa Dembele into the fold because Moussa Sissoko isn't very good (but Pochettino seems to like him for some reason). Dembele had a disappointing season last year by his lofty standards and it does appear that we may well be coming to the end of a very good player's Premier League career, as he was mooted to Serie A and China in the transfer window before it slammed shut. Dembele may not have the physicality and pace that he had, say, two years ago but he still remains a good player. Whether his body can keep up with the demands of the Premier League this season remains to be seen.

Fulham are fortunate though that Son Heung-Min, who was excellent last season, has departed for the Asian Games and won't play a part in the game. He gives Spurs an excellent option off the bench and his dynamism will be missed. Erik Lamela, Harry Winks and Josh Onomah all returned to training this week but probably won't play a part.

I'd wager then that we see the same lineup that they played against Newcastle then, which could give Fulham some room to operate provided that they aren't destroyed by Spurs' high press. Despite pressing becoming a more and more intrinsic part of today's game, Spurs still averaged an extraordinarily low PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action – a measure of quantifying the intensity of a team's press where a smaller value indicates a greater value of defensive intensity i.e. the defence has allowed a smaller ratio of uncontested passes to be made) of 7.58 last season, only behind Manchester City's value of 6.40 (for reference, Chelsea's title winning team under Antonio Conte allowed 11.08 PPDA, a low rate of a press).

Fulham's View
This game present's Fulham's first game for a long time where they are not expected to dominate the ball all that much. Indeed, last season, Spurs averaged the second most average possession in the league last year (58.8%). So how will Fulham counteract this and respond after their defeat to Palace?

It's difficult to see what changes Fulham could make. Alfie Mawson, Denis Odoi and Tim Ream are still out, meaning Calum Chambers and Max Le Marchand will stick together at centre back. I wasn't altogether impressed with Kevin McDonald's performance against Palace last weekend but it may be too soon to throw Zambo Anguissa into the fray, although I would wager it likely that we see him in some form against Burnley the following weekend.

Andre Schürrle will remain in the starting lineup, although worryingly he doesn't look to have any sort of communication or partnership going with Cyrus Christie down the right hand side, which severely restricted Fulham's attacks. Indeed, Schürrle did look better playing behind Mitrovic or on the left hand side but is it worth switching Ryan Sessegnon to an unnatural position? No. Even moving Schürrle to the no.10 role and a 4231 would mean sacrificing one of Tom Cairney or Jean Michael Seri, another unlikely change.

There's a chance Spurs might suffer some squad fatigue from the World Cup but it'd still be hard to predict anything more than disappointment personally. This is a squad that needs time to get to know each other and let's not let a bad result against a Champions League team have us reaching for our pitchforks. Instead, let's judge them on games against Burnley and Brighton, two teams much closer to where we are now than Palace and Spurs.

My Prediction: 3-1 Spurs

Fulham's first away fixture of the 2018/2019 Premier League season has been switched to Wembley Stadium due to delays in completing Tottenham's new stadium. There are a number of travel issues and alterations that could affect supporters' journeys to and from the match tomorrow, which we hope to summarise below.

TICKETING INFORMATION

Fulham have sold their full away allocation for this fixture. There will be no away tickets available on the day.

RAILWAY ENGINEERING WORKS AND SERVICE ALTERATIONS

There are extensive engineering works taking place on the West Cost Mainline, which will impact train services out of London Euston station. There will be no Virgin Trains or West Midlands Trains running between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central and no London Overground services between London Euston and Watford Junction. London Underground Bakerloo line services will terminate at Queen's Park. A rail replacement bus service will be in operation between Milton Keynes Central and Stanmore station, linking to London Underground Jubilee Line services.

This means there will be no Bakerloo or London Overground services calling at Wembley Central station on Saturday. Fulham supporters are strongly advised to take the London Underground to Wembley Park (Metropolitan or Jubilee Lines) or use the Chiltern Rail services to and from Wembley Stadium station. TfL have informed us that there will be an 'enhanced Metropolitan line' service operating on Saturday afternoon to cater for demand.

TRAVELLING BY CAR

There will be no parking available at Wembley Stadium or in the surrounding streets. Wembley Stadium does operate a park and ride scheme and more details are available here.

TRAVELLING BY BUS

The 18, 83, 92 and 224 bus routes stop in close proximity to Wembley Stadium.

AWAY PUBS

The designated away pub for this fixture is The Green Man (Dagmar Avenue, Wembley HA9 8DF). Most of the usual pubs around the stadium will be open, but it is up to individual landlords as to whether they will accept visiting supporters.

CASHLESS WEMBLEY

Wembley Stadium will be operating a cashless service at this fixture in order to reduce delays and queuing at the kiosks and bars within the stadium.

Tottenham vs Fulham: 3 key battles as Spurs return to Wembley
Both Tottenham and Fulham return to Wembley, as Mauricio Pochettino looks to make it two wins from two in the Premier League.

Tottenham got their Premier League campaign off to a positive start with a 2-1 win at St James' Park. A result, in truth, that was desperately needed to quell the tide of discontent rising in North London after the club failed to sign a player during the summer transfer window.

Fulham, by contrast, became the first newly promoted side to spend over £100 million, and a total of 12 new faces arrived at Craven Cottage. None, however, could prevent them from a losing return to the top flight, conceding twice without reply at home to Crystal Palace.

Making their first trip to Wembley since defeating Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final in May, Slavisa Jokanovic will be hoping for a better performance against a Spurs side who, themselves, are making what was supposed to be — until recently — their final league trip to the national stadium before moving home.

Here are three key battles that could have a decisive impact on Saturday's result:

    1 Serge Aurier/Kieran Trippier vs Ryan Sessegnon

Serge Aurier started against Newcastle to compensate for Kieran Trippier's late return to training following a summer away with England at the World Cup.

And whilst it's uncertain which of the two will start against Fulham — it could even be Kyle Walker-Peters to throw another name into the ring — what's set in stone is that whoever does take to the pitch from the off will have to contend with Ryan Sessegnon on Fulham's left.

The 18-year-old phenom scored 15 goals in the Championship last season and — despite a subdued Premier League debut against Crystal Palace — is considered Fulham's most dangerous player. For good reason.

vs Aurier

If Sessegnon watched Tottenham's win last weekend, both sets of fingers and toes will be crossed that Aurier starts on the right, such was the defensive vulnerability evident in his performance. Regardless, the Ivorian is a player Jokanovic likely would highlight as a potential weakness in Spurs' starting XI.

He struggled to defend against Kenedy, with the Brazilian frequently getting the better of him in one-on-one duels, whilst his lack of positional awareness and general ill-disciple were exposed on multiple occasions.

KEY STAT: Serge Aurier only completed 50% of his tackles and committed three fouls against Newcastle, the joint-most of any Tottenham player.

Aurier left too much space between himself and Davinson Sanchez — and Kenedy should have scored when Joselu played him through in this corridor — whilst he was caught him up the pitch when the Magpies countered, too.

Leaving space in behind on Sessegnon's flank is a dangerous game. The teenager has speed in abundance and trickery to match, both traits that can beat Aurier.

vs Trippier

Trippier's introduction to the side, however, changes the complexion of this battle. He's much more defensively assured than Aurier, his positioning is better and he likely won't afford Sessegnon the same space the Ivorian would.

Aurier, however, is quicker. Although he won't match Sessegnon in a foot race — few players could — he has the speed to at least attempt a recovery challenge if beaten, whereas Trippier will be left chasing shadows and hoping one of the centre backs can bail him out of trouble.

Both players, therefore, have their own respective weakness and it makes for an interesting duel, whoever has to defend against Sessegnon.

2 Davinson Sanchez vs Aleksandar Mitrovic

For all of his talents, Davinson Sanchez doesn't cope with physicality all too well, noticeable against Newcastle after Salomon Rondon's eventual introduction.

KEY STAT: Davinson Sanchez won just one defensive aerial duel against Newcastle, less than Jan Vergonthen (6), Ben Davies (7) and Aurier (6).

It's ominous, therefore, that Fulham boast the most physical bully-ish striker of the lot in Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Serb — one of Fulham's many summer recruits and a Craven Cottage hero after netting 12 goals in 17 appearances on loan in the second half of last season — bullied Crystal Palace's centre backs all game, and his dominant performance, in which he won five offensive aerial duels, deserved a goal.

Donning the number nine shirt, with all of Jokanovic's faith placed in him to lead the line, Mitrovic has the bit between his teeth and Sanchez is set for a tough afternoon.

Vertonghen is the better of the two Tottenham starting centre backs, which means Mitrovic is likely to target Sanchez and attempt to isolate him one-on-one to get the better of the aerial battle, hoping to either create chances for himself or win knockdowns for the likes of Sessegnon and Andre Schurrle to attack.

Either Sanchez deals with the threat himself or calls for support to double up on the Serb, but the downside to that is it drags another defender out of position and creates pockets of space elsewhere.

Keep an eye on this one-on-one battle, as it could prove important in Fulham's chances of earning their first points of the season.

3 Christian Eriksen vs Tom Cairney

This is perhaps the most important battle. And whilst Christian Eriksen and Tom Cairney will not wrestle for control directly against one another, they are their respective side's most influential players, orchestrating play and looking to create chances.

Cairney, for example, made 71 key passes in last year's Championship — the second-most of any Fulham player — whilst Eriksen (95) made Tottenham's most in 2017/18. The Dane also created five chances against Newcastle, three more than any other player.

Fulham recorded 67% of possession against Crystal Palace, and if they attempt the same this weekend — as per Jokanovic's philosophy — it puts Cairney front and centre, on the ball more than any other player, denoted by the fact that he made more passes (90) than his teammates last weekend.

With a 97% passing accuracy, it's extremely hard to get the ball from him, and the 27-year-old will be key to playing the likes of Sessegnon in on goal.

The Cottagers, however, will likely alter their style of play somewhat as Tottenham seek to dominate the ball.

This is where Eriksen becomes important. It's his elite vision and expansive range of passing — able to spread play, look vertically or thread balls between the line — that are essential to breaking down compact defences.

Jokanovic: Fulham will have to be clever against Spurs

Slavisa Jokanovic knows his Fulham side will have to box clever as they look to get something out of their return to Wembley when tackling Tottenham in the Premier League.

The Whites earned their place back among the elite with victory over Aston Villa in last season's Championship final.

Following a 2-0 home defeat by Crystal Palace on the opening weekend of the new top-flight campaign, Jokanovic and his squad were left with no illusions of the challenges that lie ahead.

While the Serbian is not expecting anything but another stern test of just what Fulham are made of when taking on Spurs' star-studded line-up, he believes the right approach can see the visitors produce a positive result.

"We know this team are probably going to take possession off us, and we must be ready to work all together off the ball, and show solidarity and great effort," he said.

"In some part of the defensive work, you don't have to be so talented, (but) you must be clever, organised, and show great decision-making off the ball."

Jokanovic added: "We know they are going to press us. They are a really strong defensive team and when they lose the ball they are one of the best teams at pressing. They don't give you many spaces.

"We know they have quality, they are a fast team, we know they can attack us very well."

Fulham have brought in 12 players to bolster the squad over the summer transfer window, spending the best part of £100m following their promotion.

By contrast, Spurs were the only Premier League club not to invest.

"They didn't need to spend lots of money to stay at the highest level. Our situation is a little bit different, our process is going to be a little bit different," Jokanovic said.

"They've been working together for many years. They know how to compete all together, how to work all together, how to attack and defend all together.

"For us, we are in a process for improving all these different things."

Fond memories of Fulham for Dembele

Mousa Dembélé declared his respect for Fulham ahead of our first meeting with his former team in the Premier League for over four years.

Having starred at Beerschot, Willem II and AZ Alkmaar as a youngster, the classy midfielder stepped into English football with a move to Craven Cottage in 2010 and played over 70 games in two seasons for the Whites before joining us in 2012.

Mousa came off the bench when we last faced Slavisa Jokanovic's men in the FA Cup in February, 2017 – a 3-0 win at the Cottage – and is looking forward to facing them at Wembley on Saturday (3pm).

"I was very happy when Fulham were promoted back into the Premier League, I have a good feeling with the club," Mousa said. "Obviously, I want to win this game but I will always have a lot of respect for Fulham. They were important in my development as a player, they gave me confidence and were a very big part of my early career.

"I respect them always for this. They are a big, family club and always gave me confidence. They were very positive and treated me so well. I can't say anything negative about them. They had a big influence on my career."

Mousa appeared as a second-half substitute in our opening day victory over Newcastle United, one of seven players to have featured at the World Cup to play at St James' Park.

"It's early in pre-season for me but I feel good," the Belgian international reported. "I'm happy that I played 25 minutes at Newcastle and I know from here I'll get better and better physically."

Reflecting fondly on his experiences in Russia over the summer, Mousa added: "The World Cup experience was good. Obviously you always want to play more but overall we had a good World Cup.

"You always want to win and everyone saw it was a chance for us to do even better, so as a professional you always aim higher. I think everyone will be proud but at the time you want more."

What did you take away from the opening day win at Newcastle?

Three points! Ultimately, we looked tired and slightly behind the pace so picking up the win was important. We played the game without many of our first team due to their World Cup exploits.
Were you surprised Spurs didn't sign anyone in the summer?

I was surprised as although we have a very good first XI that I believe can compete with any team in the league, our squad is a little thin. Poch and Levy have come out saying we didn't want to buy for the sake of it but if City can strengthen their squad I don't think we are too good to strengthen ours. It is clear now that at the end of last season when Poch said, "we must be brave," he was referring to being brave with our youth players and bringing them into the fold.
Who are you expecting to be your key performers this season?

Obviously Kane, Alli, Eriksen, Vertonghen, but I also believe Lucas Moura could have a big season.
Were you disappointed the move to the new stadium has been put back?

As a season ticket holder it is very disappointing but it is a huge project and one that we must be patient with. The club have refunded the three games (Fulham, Liverpool & Cardiff) and we get to go to Wembley a few more times; it could be worse. At the end of the day, once completed, we will have one of the finest stadiums in Europe. I believe they should have just said at the end of the 2016/17 season that it's a two-year project and we will be at Wembley for the next two seasons.

Have you enjoyed playing at Wembley?

The first few months were painful and worrying but it did end up feeling a little bit like home. Our performances improved and Wembley gave me a couple of highlights that go into my top 10 Spurs moments. The first, 2-0 v Man United was an outstanding performance and the pride felt that day was fantastic. The second, 3-1 v Real Madrid was simply incredible. The atmosphere was electric and the performance was just as good. Having the chance to "Ole" every pass against Real Madrid at 67 minutes is something I'll never forget!!

Which Fulham players do you think could cause Spurs some problems?

I think there are a few. I have been very impressed with Mitrović and I felt turning his loan into a permanent deal was vital to Fulham staying up this season. I am still slightly shocked that Fulham managed to pick up Seri and Schürrle, and they will be quality signings. Then there is Cairney and Sessegnon, who on their day can be as good as anyone.
Mousa Dembélé was a crowd favourite at the Cottage – how is he thought of by the Spurs fans?

Although it is clear he is struggling with the demands of a full Premier League season now, there is no doubting his genius. We love him and we love watching him play. Whenever a player is asked who is the best you have played with, the answer is Mousa Dembélé. I have never felt more safe with someone on the ball than Mousa. Absolute beast on the ball. Should score more goals though.
What sort of game are you expecting?

I think it will be tight. If we play with Sissoko and Dier as our two midfielders, I worry. For me, Seri and Cairney would enjoy playing against those two. However, I do believe our class at both ends of the pitch will show, and I can see Harry getting a couple.

Are you pleased to see Fulham back in the Premier League?

My wife and all her family are huge Fulham fans and season ticket holders, so I can't lie, I do have a rather large soft spot for Fulham. When the final whistle blew at the end of the Play-Off Final I was delighted and cheered as if Spurs had won. Obviously on Saturday I want us to win 5-0 though. From a neutral point of view, how can you not be pleased to see a club like Fulham get back to the Premier League?! It is still one of my favourite grounds to visit.
What score prediction are you going for?

I'm going for 3-1 Spurs. I think in the end we will have too much for Fulham given the injuries to their first choice defenders. However, I do believe Mitrović will cause us problems.

Three Players to Watch: Matchday 2 vs. Tottenham
Here's hoping Fulham can catch a "Big 6" club off guard...

So Fulham played their first Premier League match in four years and were left with a bit of a sour taste in their mouths. Now they must find a way to bounce back against one of the best football clubs in Europe, let alone England, in Tottenham Hotspur. But since Spurs' new stadium isn't ready just yet, Fulham will be returning to Wembley Stadium for just the third time in 43 years. The occasion will be a tad less palpable considering that this a game that will have something to play for. But it still will be another fantastic outing seeing Fulham and their swash buckling play be tested against top competition.

Now there have been enough supporters that have wondered if Slavisa Jokanovic will have to eventually ditch his free flowing system for the sake of Premier League survival. Some have even called for a double pivot in midfield of Kevin McDonald and Frank Zambo Anguissa for the sake of defensive rigidity. I personally don't think we're there just yet, but lessons will continue to be learned as to what the best Fulham XI will be in order to deliver results the Jokanovic way.

In the meantime, everyone kind of knows how Spurs play now that manager Mauricio Pochettino is into his fifth season in charge of the club. They are a hard pressing side that will come at you with their three attacking players once they have the ball and shoot from everywhere. In particular, pass the ball to Harry Kane and surely he will score by the time 90 minutes are up. But along with that, Pochettino demands a solid defensive base, and their center back play will be the best you'll see in England. If for anything else, we will truly learn a lot more about where Fulham stand in England's top flight by the time Saturday evening roles around.

So with that, let's take a look at three players to look out for from Tottenham.

Harry Kane

First up, how can you not start a review like this without including the best striker in the entire Premier League, regardless if he doesn't score in August? Along with that, how do you not include Harry Kane for his exploits in the World Cup and for his hat trick at Craven Cottage the last time these two sides met? So yeah, this guy better be one to watch out for.

As you will see from his radar, his goal scoring is clearly dependent on how much he's able to shoot. That is so much the case last season, that he ended up generating 5.37 shots per 90 minutes! You will be hard pressed to find many forward that can be such a kog in a team's attack. That being said, 2017/18 also saw Kane's form dip a little bit with regards to his efficiency levels. Compared to 2016/17, his percentage of shots on target dropped from 52.7% to 41.3% and his goal conversion rate dropped from a other-worldly 21.3% down to a more pedestrian 15.2%.

Some will argue that his premature return from injury back in March had a part to play and this is a player that has no idea when to rest and recover. For the sake of club and country, let's hope Kane gets smarter with his body and learns that he doesn't have many opportunities to dominate world football like he has while at the prime of his career. For the sake of Fulham, welp, let's just say he continues to not score in August.

If Kane were to not score tomorrow, there will be plenty others that will know what to do with the ball at Spurs. I could have gone with Dele Alli and his crazy celebrations, or I could go with Heung-Min Son, who I personally think is one of the best substitutes in Europe. But I'm going to go with their most consistent attacking force over the years in Christian Eriksen.

The 26-year old Danish International is such a presence at Spurs and he always guarantees you 20 goals-and-assists every Premier League campaign. Last season was no different as he put up his highest goal total (10) since his 2014/15 season. Some will say that that was due to his more advanced role with Tottenham last campaign and pushing Alli towards more midfield duties. But now that Mauricio Pochettino is back to deploying a 4-2-3-1 formation, Eriksen is back to his usual role as the team's number 10. That doesn't make Eriksen any less dangerous as he's always been among the most dangerous passers in the Premier League. This also includes his set piece delivery as it was evidenced by the

Now I seriously should be picking somebody else to look out for when it comes to defensive players at Tottenham. I could go with Jan Vertongen who has been such an ever present force along the back four. It is downright criminal for me not to show you all how Kieran Trippier's radar is after his exploits at the World Cup. I could have even gone more sentimental and shown you all Moussa Dembele, but who knows if he'll ever be a regular starter now that it's looking like age has caught up with him.

So instead, I'll go with Spurs' captain as the final player to look out for. Remember a time where Heurelho Gomes was in net and all at White Hart Lane will wonder if they could ever get a world class goalkeeper? Welp, those complaints haven't come about in ages thanks to a now World Cup winner. Along with being a very solid shot stopper, Lloris has developed himself as one of the textbook sweeper keepers in Europe. Only Manchester City's Ederson can lay a better claim than him in England.

This past season, Lloris was second to Ederson in long ball passing accuracy at 46.8% and only Ederson and Liverpool's Loris Karius (yes, THAT Loris Karius) bettered Lloris' 0.15 xG Chain. So this man knows a thing or two about playing from the back. Even if he is in the stands, I do hope Marcus Bettinelli is able to take part of this fixture just so he can watch a master at work. But I will say that it did take a while for Lloris to develop into one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. And granted, plenty of that coincided with the quality of manager that was in Tottenham's dugout. But once Pochettino had a grasp of talents, the rest is history.

Olympiacos make offer to loan Fulham striker Rui Fonte

Rui Fonte arrived at Fulham on a three-year deal from Braga last summer

Fulham's Rui Fonte appears set to leave the club after Olympiacos made a loan offer for the striker, according to Sky sources.

La Liga club Leganes and French side Bordeaux have also made enquiries for the 28-year-old, who has struggled to make an impact since joining the Whites.

Fonte arrived at Craven Cottage on a three-year deal from Braga last summer and made 28 appearances in all competitions but scored only three goals.

Only eight of his appearances in the Sky Bet Championship were in the second half of the season after the club signed Aleksandar Mitrovic on loan from Newcastle.

The West London club signed Mitrovic permanently in a £22m deal this summer while they also landed Atletico Madrid's Luciano Vietto on loan on Deadline Day, leaving little prospect of Fonte getting first-team games.

The former Portugal U21 international appears set to leave the club for at least the current campaign, therefore.

Will Wembley Have an impact?

The question of whether Tottenham would be able to perform at Wembley was hotly debated prior to last season's commence. Tottenham had previously struggled, albeit mostly against top teams in the latter stages of a tournament. They did indeed struggle initially at Wembley, failing to win any of the first three home games.

However, Tottenham grew into life at Wembley, showing they were more than capable with notable wins against Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. Interestingly, Tottenham finished 5th in the 2017/18 home-form table and second in the away-form table.

Ultimately, playing at Wembley shouldn't be an issue against Fulham. However, Wembley is a burden for Tottenham – both for team and fans. This is in stark contrast to Fulham, who excited to return to Wembley, where they sealed their return to the Premier League in May.

Bad Start at the Cottage

Fulham lost their opening game 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace. Fulham backed up a successful campaign last season with an equally successful transfer window. Securing the services of Alexander Mitrovic was perhaps the highlight. Their opening day defeat was, however, a rude awakening. The Premier League is unforgiving. A second successive loss will pile the pressure on for their next game – another difficult match against Burnley. Fulham will, therefore, be desperate to capitalise on any potential distractions in the Tottenham squad.

Fulham Aim to Restrain Kane

Premiership newcomers Fulham will target the attacking trio of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen. Dele Alli got off to a flying start on the opening day. Although most noticed for his goal celebration, he had a phenomenal game. The Englishman will certainly be looking to demonstrate the move again.

Harry Kane, despite it being August, a month in which he cannot seem to find his form, will still be the major concern for Fulham. The World Cup Golden Boot winner will be desperate to finally end his August hoodoo. Christian Eriksen has also got off to a good start, creating more chances, five, than anyone else on the opening weekend.

Aleksandar the Great?

Fulham will look to Aleksander Mitrovic for the goals this season. The striker grabbed an impressive 12 goals in 18 league appearances in his debut season with The Lilywhites. New signing Andre Schurrle will also be looking to make an impact, whilst long-term Tottenham target Ryan Sessegnon will undoubtedly be up for the game.

Fulham return to Wembley on mission to prove their style also has staying power

This summer Fulham spent like one of the Premier League's elite. Saturday's visit to Wembley gives the Cottagers a chance to prove that their investment was astute enough to allow Slavisa Jokanovic to play his way, no matter the opponents.

Both Tottenham and Fulham earned their place in the Premier League record books for their summer spending, but for very different reasons.

Spurs became the first team since the creation of the transfer window not to make a single signing. Meanwhile in west London, Shahid Khan was signing off on deals worth in excess of £100million - the first time a newly-promoted side had ever hit nine figures.

No player typified Fulham's ambitious approach to recruitment quite like Jean-Michael Seri. The man Xavi anointed as his heir ought to have been playing in a Barcelona shirt last season, only for Nice to break the deal apart at the last minute.

Twelve months later Fulham swooped in to steal the Ivorian midfielder away from Borussia Dortmund, offering an ambitious vision (and impressive pay packet) that convinced Seri to make the move to Craven Cottage. It is the sort of power play Spurs fans have been crying out for Daniel Levy to make.

He is already making a strong impression, standing out even in defeat to Crystal Palace. A whirling dervish in the middle of the park, Seri completed more passes than any other player, won more tackles and managed more interceptions.

It may only have been his first game in the top flight but Seri appears to be ready made for the Premier League, with the quality to go toe-to-toe with Eric Dier et al at Wembley.

"His characteristics are good for how we have played before," Jokanovic told Standard Sport. "He is a player with a high reputation and he will be useful for us.

"Personally it helps me coaching him and using him on the pitch.

"For different reasons at the beginning of pre-season I used him as a defensive midfielder and he can play in this position too with different characteristics. He's not someone who can destroy [play] so much. From another side we believe he can play more offensively; he's not a top scorer but he can make assists.

"He's working really hard off the ball too, his technique is high-level, his control and first touch are perfect. He is always moving and tries to observe what is going to happen. He's a guy who needs a bit of time to discover what he has around himself and how he can collaborate with his team-mates better."

Seri is not the only new signing that it is reasonable to assume will hit the ground running. Andre Schurrle has two years of Chelsea experience to call on, Aleksandar Mitrovic a four-month spell with the Cottagers in the Championship and the Calum Chambers-Alfie Mawson axis excelled for the England Under-21s, though the latter is out until September.

Still this was all true last week, when Crystal Palace were the visitors to Craven Cottage. The football was easy on the eye but at times naive, particularly from a side that included six debutants. With the likes of Sergio Rico, Mawson and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa to come in, Jokanovic insists he will need plenty of time.

"Somebody told me that the Chelsea coach Sarri said they need a minimum three months to build a team. If he needs three months, we are going to ask for three years," he said, jokingly.

"Our intention is to be organised, do teams damage and try to win points and games. If it doesn't happen, we must keep going, take our time, keep calm and in some way find a solution for a completely new team.

"We are talking about following our style, but this style needs to follow some new faces and new players and we are talking about quality players but they haven't worked at the moment with the rest of their teammates. In this process we need time but in football time doesn't exist."

Having taken Fulham from the lower reaches of the Championship to the top tier, Jokanovic likely has more time in his favour than many managers. Though the result will not make or break the Cottagers' season on their return to Wembley mere months on from the playoff final, they must show soon that the unquestionable style of their play can make a substantial impact on the Premier League.

Slavisa Jokanovic has admitted Fulham will need time to find their feet back in the Premier League as he seeks to integrate a dozen new players into his squad at Craven Cottage.

The newly promoted side make the trip back to Wembley, where they won the Championship play-off in May, on Saturday for a daunting confrontation with Tottenham Hotspur. Jokanovic has major concerns across his backline, where injuries and suspension have left Fulham with a makeshift feel, but took enough positives from their opening weekend defeat by Crystal Palace to offer optimism.

More than £100m was spent in the market this summer, with eight of the new faces having featured against Palace. A ninth, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, could be involved for the meeting with Spurs.

"I haven't found many negatives since our return to the Premier League, and I always try and speak about positive things," said the manager. "In certain situations maybe we have to react a little bit better but we need to accept I have started with a completely new defence, a new goalkeeper and many new players. Somebody told me the Chelsea coach, Maurizio Sarri, had said they need a minimum of three months to build their team. If he needs three months, we are going to ask for three years.

"Our intention is to be organised, do teams damage and try to win points and games. If it doesn't happen, we must keep going, take our time, stay calm and, in some way, find a solution for a completely new team. We are talking about following our style but this style needs to [be learned by] some new faces and new players. We are talking about quality players but they haven't worked at the moment with the rest of their new teammates. In this process we need time. So what we're going to do is be calm, push forward and be brave. We must trust in ourselves but be more clinical."

Fabri is expected to retain his place in goal against Spurs with another new signing, Sergio Rico, on the bench. Marcus Bettinelli, who made 26 starts in the Championship campaign but was hampered by injury in pre-season, finds himself third-choice but Jokanovic will resist attempts to send the 26-year-old on loan before the closure of the window at the end of the month. "I am happy with three quality goalkeepers," the manager said. "A loan? I am not thinking in this direction. I do not know what the player is thinking but he must work and fight for his chance."

Heung-min Son could be a huge miss for Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur will play their first "home" fixture of the Premier League at Wembley Stadium on Saturday when they meet Fulham.

Spurs will be looking to build on their opening day victory against Newcastle United last weekend and will entertain one of last season's promoted clubs in a London Derby.

However, the clash will not be easy for Mauricio Pochettino, as according to a match preview by Sky Sports, he will be without a couple of key men for the clash.

Heung-min Son is away on international duty with South Korea as he looks to help his country lift the Asian Cup.

The winger, who has been influential for Spurs, could be a huge miss to Tottenham but Pochettino will be hoping he has players that can step up in his absence.

One man that could fill in that role is Erik Lamela, however, it is unlikely he will feature for the north London outfit as he has just returned from an injury, as has Harry Winks.

Victor Wanyama is another that remains unavailable for Pochettino as he continues to recover from a knee injury.

Marcus Bettinelli challenged to fight for his place at Fulham by Slavisa Jokanovic

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic has told Marcus Bettinelli to fight for his place in the first team following the arrival of two new goalkeepers over the summer.

Bettinelli, 26, was the No 1 at Craven Cottage last season and helped Fulham secure promotion to the Premier League but has fallen down the pecking order after the signings of Fabri and Sergo Rico in the summer transfer window.

He was left out of Jokanovic's matchday squad against Crystal Palace last weekend and tweeted during the game to confirm he was not injured.

Fabri made his Premier League debut following his £5m summer move from Besiktas, while Rico was on the bench despite only joining from Sevilla less than 48 hours earlier.

Newspaper reports have suggested Bettinelli could seek a loan move to gain first-team minutes but Jokanovic has told the player to knuckle down and compete for his spot at Fulham.

He said: "I do not know what the player is thinking but he must work and fight for his chance.

"I have three goalkeepers and I can choose only one of them. One of them will be in the stands, one will be on the bench and one will be in the goal. The situation for Marcus Bettinelli is like the situation for the other goalkeepers, and like other parts of the squad.

"I am happy with three quality goalkeepers. This is a fantastic situation for a head coach. The three keepers must fight for the position and I will decide what is best for my team."

Rico, who won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2015, is expected to overtake Fabri as the first choice at Fulham once he settles into his new club.

Jokanovic said: "If you ask why Bettinelli is not in goal, you can talk about we made some investment for other players.

"A player who has some experience in a high level and who has some experience in the Champions League.

"Another situation [an injury] with Bettinelli during the pre-season forced us to bring another keeper too. This goalkeeper is a quality keeper who has similar experience. A Champions League keeper who won a European trophy."

Match Preview: Tottenham vs. Fulham (H)

It's no secret that the fans are disgruntled as Spurs welcome Fulham to Wembley for what we hoped would be the last time. The anxiety over a lack of summer signings was supposed to go away as the club embarked on the next chapter of its history. Instead - due to 'safety issues' - the opening of the new stadium could be as late as November with the exact date unconfirmed.

Poch will need to make sure the dampened mood in N17 doesn't filter through to the players as we look to maintain our perfect start to the season. This shouldn't be an issue for a squad which is typically professional under such circumstances. Furthermore, our league record at Wembley (W13, D4, L2) - and at home vs newly promoted teams (18 wins in a row) - suggests we will collect the three points.

However, Fulham will go into the game with reason to be hopeful. Against Newcastle, we became very leggy in the later stages, and were fortunate to leave with a win. If Slaviša Jokanović's men can bring us to the 65 minute mark - without being behind - they will feel confident of getting a result. And as good as Spurs' Wembley form is on paper it took a while for us to get the wheels in motion there last year. If there are any cobwebs this time around then we may well drop points. As per our season opener Poch will look to balance out the team with players who didn't play at the World Cup.

We will be waving goodbye to Son who departs for the Asian Games thereby avoiding military service (if South Korea win gold). Aside from that the squad remains unchanged from a week ago.


Spurs got off to a slow start at Wembley last season and it might take a while for them to get going again. If Fulham are well oiled they will feel hopeful of taking a point against a Spurs team still weary from its efforts in Russia.

Slavisa Jokanovic has a multitude of options to choose from as the Whites face off against Tottenham Hotspur, with debates raging over whether Fulham will adapt their possession-based style of play to combat Spurs' strengths.

Here are three possible ways Fulham could line up at Wembley, as the club seeks their first league points of the season.

Tried and tested

Slavisa Jokanovic is known as a firm believer in his footballing philosophy, and it is entirely possible he will decide to change nothing against Tottenham Hotspur.

    "We will try – we believe it's our best way to be successful and this season, if you believe now a better way for us is to give Spurs the ball and wait for them on the edge of the box and try finish the game 0-0, I am not sure this is best plan for us."

   
The Whites would stick with their passing game plan, attempting to control the flow of the match and pin Tottenham inside their own defensive half.

In this system, Jokanovic would stick with his favoured 4-3-3 formation and largely keep the starting XI from the Crystal Palace match intact.

However, Fulham might be forced to adapt to an unfamiliar situation: a match where the opposing team dominates possession. The last time Fulham were outclassed in possession came in December 2017, when Brentford had 51% of the ball against the Whites.

    "We know this team will take possession off us and we must be ready for working altogether off the ball and suffer and show the solidarity and great effort. In some part of the defensive work, we don't need to be so talented but must be clever, organised and show great decision for working off the ball."

   
In a defensive scenario, the Serbian manager could opt for a more solid 4-2-3-1 and favour a counterattacking style of play with faster players, such as Aboubakar Kamara, getting the nod.

In a possible final twist, Jokanovic could view the Spurs match as a chance to see how well-suited many of his new signings are to Premier League football.

A wildcard option of sorts, Fulham could set up in a 4-4-2 formation that would allow Mitrovic and Luciano Vietto to work up top together, and hand former Ligue 1 duo Jean-Michael Seri and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa a partnership in midfield.

It is an unlikely proposition, but Jokanovic might be tempted to throw Mauricio Pochettino a curveball with his team selection.
