Title: Brede as defensive coach?
Post by: Kentish Gent on October 31, 2018, 02:15:17 PM
Anybody else read Brede Hangeland's contribution to the official website today? And, if so, did you come to the same conclusion as me - that Brede clearly knows how to fix our defence. So why not hire him as a defensive coach?

Yes, I had exactly the same thought.  I don't know what, other than occasional punditry, he is doing at the moment but if I were the appropriate person at Motspur Park I'd certainly invite him.

One of the best defenders we've ever had, so clearly knows what he's talking about.

We could do a lot worse than have him assist the team/management.

YES! Make it happen. Hughes and Brede duo as defensive coaches.

Keeping it tight with narrow full backs and two banks of four would see us concede fewer.  We might not get many more points, Mitro might think he's back in Newcastle and our manager might self-combust, but it's an option....provided we have the players to do it.  So that becomes the question.

Rico for Schwartzer......who knows.  Not impossible
Bryan for Konchesky.  I'll buy that just
Mawson for Hangeland.  Tenuous at best
Ream for Hughes.  Go on, I'm feeling generous
Fosu-Mensah for Pantsil.  Not the highest bar so yes.
Anguissa for Dickson.  Not as scary, but better with football so OK
Seri for Murphy.  Alright
Sess for Dempsey.  Works for me.
Cairney for Davies.  Yep.
Vietto for Gera.  That's OK
Mitro for Zamora.  Bingo.

But it's not a game of FIFA.  Can the current lot summon the team spirit the class of 2008/9//10 showed? Would love to see it.

Getting Dickson to coach Anguissa would be good.  Frankly given the way we have defended recently, getting Dickson to just stand there looking menacing would give me a morale boost.

Absolutely.  A great defender who has the personal qualities to become a top defensive coach. An articulate, intelligent, patient and passionate man. I've listened to Brede on 5 Live a couple of times and he's always got something interesting to say. No coincidence that he was Roy's first Fulham signing and Roy's Fulham was the most cohesive defensive unit I've seen in over 40 years of supporting the club.

If the rumours are true about splits in the dressing room he would be a terrific unifying force.

A great guy, knows his stuff, schooled under Hodgson but it'll never happen.

Well, he has it right to fix our defence. I enjoyed reading his views. The defence certainly needs serious attention even if the style of play slightly suffers, and he could be an excellent defensive coach. If not fixed - it's the 'R' word come Spring next year! COYW 049:gif

To be honest,I would love if the class of 2010 came into Motspur even just for an afternoon to give them a bit of inspiration. I'm not certain but imagine the lift Betts would have listening to Schwarzer, Sess feeding off Dempsey, Murphy telling a story or two about that Hamburg night or even Simon Davies giving an insight into the Europa run . The whole club would be given a massive lift.
I think Aaron is the only one from the final squad still playing, and Riise Jr

Etuhu was not a good def mid, much better as box to box. He always made clumsy fouls. I'd get in Mahamadou Diarra, now there's a class act.

Re posts from Carborundum and  Mitrovic the Warrior:

Seri for Murphy? - I like Seri a lot, but for me Murphy was outstanding for us in central midfield. Absolutely top drawer.

Etuhu did a job. Win the ball... give it to Danny. Job done.

And don't forget the central midfield pairing for the Juventus game.

Big difference between being good at something and being good at teaching others about it

If that's how it worked, Ronaldinho would be a much better manager than Ferguson, Wenger, Mourinho

I've no idea how good Brede would be as a coach really but my instinctive thought is he'd be terrible... too much of a gentle giant

I'd much rather bring in some established 50 year old defensive coach who's worked at Milan or Madrid or something... don't care how good he was as a player or whether he played for Fulham

Brede is agreat summariser in Norway and an intelligent guy/ We need a defensive coach since we "lost" ours. Parker clearly is not the one.

Brede would sort out the shape, what about right back on Saturday...and having Kamara on the field made it worse.

Brede work as a 'fotball expert' for Norwegian tv2 (premier league).
He is known to be a very smart guy who could help us with our defensive issues.

Etuhu certainly a marmite player with some obvious limitations.  But a marvellous tackler and, whilst there were some fouls thrown in, he generally stayed on the pitch.  Some of his very best work was defending opposition breakaways where his athletic pedigree shone through and some of the stuff he got up to, at full pelt, escaped the attention of refs & cameras.  But I'm sure his teammates knew all about it.  Opposition players hated being marked by him and some visibly shrank.  This, above all else is what I want Anguissa to do.  No back four can do the job on their own.  They need the opposition inconvenienced before making contact.  KMac knows all this, but just lacks the athleticism to do it at the top level.

Disagree he was a marvellous tackler. How many times did he gave silly fouls away just outside our box? Diarra was a marvellous tackler.

He'd also teach MLM and Odoi how to pass out from the back. His long balls forward were often excellent.
