Title: Brian McBride -- A Real American Hero shirt sale
Post by: S8C on October 14, 2010, 06:55:07 PM
Greetings Fulham Fans,

My name is Dan Martin, I'm Director of Communications for Section 8 Chicago, the Independent Supporters' Association for the Chicago Fire Soccer Club. I'm writing to let you know that we are organizing a pre-sale of supporter-designed, supporter-produced tshirts honoring USA and Fulham legend Brian McBride and his impending retirement from the game.

We guessed that members of your web community would be interested in purchasing some of the shirts. All money from the sale will go to our club's charitable organization, the Chicago Fire Foundation. All relevant information on the shirt sale, including images and ordering information, can be found via our web site, here:

http://section8chicago.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=542:brian-mcbride-qa-real-american-heroq-shirt-represale&catid=1:general-supporter-news&Itemid=161 (http://section8chicago.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=542:brian-mcbride-qa-real-american-heroq-shirt-represale&catid=1:general-supporter-news&Itemid=161)

Thanks for your time, and if you have any questions, please post and let me know.

...thanks for that S8C, I'm sure it will generate a lot of sales, especially with our 'septic' contingent. McGod is a player we all held in very high esteem for his work-rate and professionalism - oh! and his goals.. :clap_hands:

Take note, LB is equating Americans to sewage.

...are you two for real? The term 'septic' is rhyming slang for septic tank - or YANK, ask American Mike if it is intended as an insult..!

...will you two stop stirring it - it's bad enough that Mo and American James jumped to a negative conclusion without you making it worse!

Now which of you want to explain this version to them as they obviously have taken a dislike to me:-

Well, back in the day there was a young lad called Arthur ... er, well, it hasn't got much to do with the film by the same name, just read the following (where it mentions slang)  J. Arthur Rank  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Arthur_Rank#Popular_culture)

Septic is indeed the classic term. There is also the lesser known term "wooden".
I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to work that one out.

Septic is definitely not derogatory or ever said in derogatory way. It is simply rhyming slang - Septic tank = Yank.  :dft009:

Loving the shirt by the way -

I gotta tell you, all the years I lived in England and all the years I've studied it, I never heard "septic." I honestly assumed that LB#11 had missed both spellings of "skeptic/sceptic" in his usual ham-fisted way.

Also, when I lived in England "J. Arthur" referred to something else that rhymed with "Rank."

I think the beauty of cockney rhyming slang is given our propensity to shorten things, it doesn't actually have to rhyme!

LB, as you know by now, we're an overly sensitive lot.  :012:

And Mr RR, I now live in the rap infested part of the world where they think they know how to rhyme.

Bring back Motown please. At least there was a bit of life and emotion in that.

Agreed. I think the Motown sound captured everyone's attention, it to me, sounds as good today, as it did when I was a little kid.

I don't listen to Rap but know people that do. I find it mostly offensive, however will admit that occassionally, I will hear something that is actually good.

You must be bombarded by it where you are. I think there is a book in you about your experiences living in a neighborhood where you are minority, I will bet it has been VERY interesting.

It would be helpful if you had the shipping costs to the USA on your web site Dan, if you preorder the shirts there is no way of knowing the carriage costs, also is there a colour choice?

Hi guys, thanks for the responses.

epsomraver (and others who are wondering): We just added an international shipping option in our store, so for orders in the USA (and Canada I'm presuming) shipping will be $5, and for orders outside the USA/Canada shipping will be $9. If anyone would like to order shirts in greater quantities to save on shipping, please contact us directly at [email protected] to make arrangements.

Also, sorry, there is no color choice other than black. We debated on making white shirts as well as the banner that the design came from was white, but it wasn't possible.

Thanks again for your responses, and I enjoyed the "septic tank" banter... I lived in Australia for a while as a kid and heard many of the same slang terms. Rest assured, we have plenty for you guys over here too ;)

Fire to honor McBride this Saturday

Offer $20 Seats to See Number 20 for McBride Farewell Match

October 13, 2010

Brian McBride

The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced today that it will honor Fire forward and U.S. Soccer legend Brian McBride at his final home match at TOYOTA PARK for the Fire's home finale against D.C. United on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 3:00 PM CT (My50/TeleFutura). The club will recognize the MLS All-Time Best XI forward's achievements during pre-game, halftime and post-game activities in front of the Fire faithful – including video well-wishes from players and coaches who have played alongside McBride in MLS and with the U.S. Men's National Team, a video interview with McBride and a video salute to McBride's 17-year professional soccer career. During a postgame ceremony, McBride will personally address fans from midfield and be joined by his family as the Fire present him with a gift of appreciation for his pioneering contributions to MLS and U.S. Soccer.

As part of the celebration, the club will be offering $20 Cornerkick seats to see #20 in his final home match in a Fire uniform. For $20 to see #20, please call 1-888-MLS-FIRE (657-3473) or head to the club's official website at www.Chicago-Fire.com (http://www.chicago-fire.com). For additional information on season, group or individual 2011 match tickets, click here.

McBride has appeared in 218 games, scoring 79 goals and adding 52 assists over the course of his 11-year MLS career with the Chicago Fire and Columbus Crew.

The American striker returned to Chicago to play for his hometown club July 30, 2008, following a celebrated four and half year stint with English Premier League side Fulham FC. While donning the Fire shirt, the Arlington Heights, IL product scored 17 goals in 55 appearances helping the Fire to back-to-back Eastern Conference Finals.

One of the defining figures in the history of the U.S. Men's National Team, McBride appeared in three FIFA World Cups (1998, 2002, 2006) and ranks third all-time in goals scored (30) behind Eric Wynalda (34) and Landon Donovan (45). In the 2002 World Cup, the USA's most successful World Cup experience, McBride provided game winning goals for the USA in defeats of Portugal and Mexico helping the side advance to the quarterfinals. McBride sits behind Bert Patenaude and Donovan for the most World Cup goals for an American with three. McBride capped his international career by captaining the 2008 U.S. Olympic team at the Beijing Games, as one of the three "overage" players permitted to the Olympic squad.
