Interestingly, almost exactly 10 years prior to that (March 2000) we sacked our manager, a former player (a combative midfield, previously on the fringes of the England team) whom our wealthy foreign owner had given a first opportunity in management with an expensively-assembled team and the target of promotion, which the manager failed to achieve with his slow, predicable tactics.
