Fulham and Derby County target set to leave Oxford United

Oxford United are expected to lose defender Rob Dickie this summer, as per a report by the Witney Gazette.

The highly-rated centre-back has been linked with the likes of Fulham, Derby County and Nottingham Forest, as well as Premier League duo Burnley and Southampton.

Oxford are poised to offload him over the coming months following their defeat in the League One Play-Off final to Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley last week.

Their boss Karl Robinson said on Friday, as per the Witney Gazette: "I've had a conversation today that blew me away when you think of the size of this club that would be interested in the likes of Rob.

"You can't keep that player if these clubs come in, so re-spend it to give yourself the greatest opportunity to build again for the future."

He added: "To be honest, I don't think it's right to keep Rob back."

Dickie, who is 24 years old, joined the U's in January 2018 and has been a key player for the third tier side since then.

He started his career at Reading and rose up through their youth ranks. However, he only made one senior appearance for the Royals and had loan spells away at Basingstoke Town, Cheltenham Town and Lincoln City to gain first-team experience.

Oxford then lured him away from the Madejski Stadium on a permanent basis and are set to make a hefty profit on him this summer, with the club looking to recoup a fee in the region of £2-3 million for his services.

Talking Points: Sheff Weds

There's plenty to discuss following the latest round of games, with the fate of teams at both ends of the Championship going down to the final day.

1. The assist list

We may only have had three different scorers on Saturday, but all five goals were set up a different player. Neeskens Kebano's opener came about after a fine pick out from Michael Hector, and the winger later won the penalty that Aleksandar Mitrović converted to make it 3-0. In between those goals, Josh Onomah picked up his third assist of the season when he played in Mitro for his first of the afternoon. In the second half, it was Harrison Reed's positive running that won the free-kick for Kebano to double his tally, and late on we saw Mitrović turn provider as he teed up Bobby De Cordova-Reid for the eighth and final goal of the day.

2. Back to front

It's always fun viewing whenever a Fulham goal goes in, but the transitions in play building up to Mitrović's first were an absolute delight. Despite coming under pressure from Sheffield Wednesday's high press, the boys at the back refused to panic, moving for one another to create space rather than lumping the ball clear. When Tim Ream did manage to get some clear grass in front of him, we had the ball in the back of the net three passes later; Ream to Johansen to Onomah to Mitrović. A devastatingly quick move.

3. Race for the Golden Boot

Two for Mitrović at the weekend means he now sits on 26 league goals for the season, which is just one fewer than Louis Saha managed when we won the title in 2000/01. It also saw him leapfrog Brentford's Ollie Watkins in the race for this year's Golden Boot. It looks set to go down to the wire, but it should not be forgotten that Mitrović has played 540 fewer minutes than his Bees counterpart.


4. Controversial penalty

It doesn't particularly matter now, but if Fulham hadn't seen the game out on Saturday then there would certainly have been an inquest into the decision to award Wednesday a penalty at the start of the second half. Marek Rodák appeared to clearly win the ball when he went in for a defender's style tackle, and he was as bewildered as anyone when the referee opted to point to the spot.

5. Final day drama

Obviously it is a division we want to get out of, but the Championship deserves credit for the unrivalled excitement it provides. Going into the previous round of fixtures, Play-Offs looked a certainty for the Whites, but West Bromwich Albion and Brentford's failure to get any points against relegation threatened sides means any one of us three could still finish the campaign in second. There are also Play-Off spots up for grabs which will be taken by two from Nottingham Forest, Cardiff City and Swansea City, while no side is officially relegated yet going into fixture number 46.

Exclusive: Burnley set sights on signing Southampton 25-yr-old Hasenhuttl may let go

Burnley have set their sights on signing Southampton midfielder Harrison Reed after his impressive Fulham loan, Football Insider understands.

The 25-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his Saints deal and his future at the club is up in the air.

A Burnley source has told Football Insider the club are keeping close tabs on Harrison as they plot a move ahead of the window opening next week.

Manager Sean Dyche is an admirer of Reed and has been impressed at how he has flourished in a midfield anchorman role for promotion-chasing Fulham.

Reed appears well down the pecking order at Southampton and Ralph Hasenhuttl was happy for him to go out on loan this season.

The Saints manager may now be willing to offload him this summer.

Reed spent the 2018-19 campaign at Blackburn Rovers after spending the previous season at Norwich City.

A versatile midfielder who can play centrally or on the right flank, he has made only 30 senior appearances for the Saints since graduating from their academy set-up.

Reed has made 21 league starts among 25 appearances in all competitions for Fulham this season, in which he has missed a major chunk with a calf injury.

The youth international has also been capped 14 times by England at Under-20 level.

Burnley monitoring player currently thriving at Fulham

Fulham loanee Harrison Reed is attracting the interest of Burnley ahead of the summer, with the Clarets considering a swoop to sign the midfielder contracted to Premier League rivals, Southampton.

Reed has been with Saints his entire senior career, but loans with Norwich City, Southampton and now Fulham have been his proper shot at getting games at a decent level.

According to Football Insider, Burnley boss Sean Dyche is a big fan of Reed and is considering a move for him as the midfielder's deal at Southampton runs down.

The 25-year-old is part of the Fulham squad currently chasing promotion in the Championship, with the midfielder flourishing under Scott Parker, particularly since the restart.

He's made 25 appearances in the Championship this season, showing his best form sitting in-front of the Fulham defence and allowing others to spill forward.

On Saturday he featured in the 5-3 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Craven Cottage, but was sent-off in the 90th minute.

Parker's side wrap up their season on Wednesday night when they play Wigan Athletic, with the Cottagers still having an outside chance of automatic promotion.

A play-off campaign feels more likely, however, with Reed looking set to be back in contention for that.

The Verdict 

Reed has been excellent for Fulham this season and since the restart, he's flourished in a holding midfield position.

In the eyes of many, he's the standout performer in the Fulham midfield now and he should be given a chance in the Premier League in some capacity next year.

That might be with Fulham, it might be with Southampton or it could well be with Burnley.

He'd be a fine signing.

EFL: Wigan Athletic's 12-point administration deduction kicks in at Fulham final whistle but it is not the end

    Hong Kong-owned club will stay in the Championship anyway if they beat Fulham and neither Charlton nor Luton win on Wednesday night
    Administrators have appealed points deduction but success could complicate matters further depending on final standings

The English Football League has confirmed that it will impose a 12-point penalty on Hong Kong-owned Wigan Athletic at the final whistle of the last Championship match of the season on Wednesday.

"In the specific case of Wednesday evening's final round of Championship matches for season 2019-20, and any potential impact on divisional standings, relegation will be confirmed for the clubs in 22nd, 23rd and 24th positions in the Championship table following the conclusion of those matches and will be subject to the resolution of any ongoing proceedings," the EFL said in statement on Monday.

"In the case of Wigan Athletic, the 12-point sporting sanction as a result of the club entering administration will apply immediately following the end of the game against Fulham but is subject to appeal."
Wigan's administrators announced they would appeal. The club went into administration just weeks after a takeover by Hong Kong's Next Leader Fund
, which had bought the club from another Hong Kong company, International Entertainment Corporation.
Both the EFL and Hong Kong stock exchange approved the deal
, with NLF taking formal control on June 4. Just 20 days later NLF's UK lawyers put administration in process and it was confirmed on July 1.

Once the club announced it was in the hands of administrators the EFL imposed its mandatory 12-point deduction. Despite that hanging over their heads Wigan sit 13th
on the 24-team table, 10 points above the relegation zone.

A win for Wigan over promotion chasing Fulham would move them out of the relegation zone – even with the 12 points docked – providing neither Charlton Athletic nor Luton Town win.

All 24 teams play their final match of the regular season at the same time on Wednesday night and, aside from Leeds United being crowned champions, it is all still to play for in the play-off and relegation places.
Hong Kong-owned Birmingham City,
in 20th place on 50 points, welcome mid-table Derby County to St Andrews. Wins for Charlton Athletic (away at Leeds) and Luton Town (who host a Blackburn Rovers with nothing to play for) could drag Birmingham back into the relegation places.

Those three teams and the bottom two sides, Barnsley and Hull City, all have their chances of survival increased when Wigan's 12-point deduction kicks in.

However, a successful appeal from Wigan's administrators in the case they go down is expected to see a team relegated at their expense launch a legal appeal of their own.

The EFL noted that the independent panel which is looking into Wigan understand the situation and the speed it needs to be resolved to allow teams to prepare for next season.

"Independent disciplinary commissions are well aware of the challenges for any club that is subject to proceedings, and the need for clarity for financial and operational planning purposes, particularly ahead of the summer transfer window opening later this month," it said in the statement.

"Equally, there are the operational pressures this presents the EFL, in areas such as fixture scheduling in the event any decision(s) change a divisional line-up.

"In addition, there is also the consequential impact to consider on how any decisions may affect other clubs within a division who require the same courtesy to plan with as much certainty as is practically possible."

The situation is further complicated by EFL investigations into Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County.

Fulham are considering a €25m (£22.5m) bid from La Liga club Villarreal for on-loan midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

Anguissa, who has been on loan with Villarreal this season, joined Fulham from Marseille in August 2018. The 24-year-old has made 36 league appearances this season, scoring two goals.

His second goal of the season came in Sunday's 4-0 win over Eibar which ensured Villarreal a spot in the Europa League next season.

Anguissa was a part of Fulham's £100m+ spending spree in 2018 as they prepared for a return to the Premier League.

The Cameroonian was one of five players bought on deadline day alone alongside Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Joe Bryan, Sergio Rico and Luciano Vietto.

Although Fulham were relegated that season, they are aiming to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. They are guaranteed a Championship play-off spot but could still go up automatically on the final day of the season if they beat Wigan and other results go their way.

Former Fulham coach tips Aussie talent explosion in A-League

Former Fulham staff coach, Aussie Scott Miller, is upbeat about the A-League, believing young Australian talent will blossom in the financially precarious post-COVID era in Australia.

Miller, 38, is one of Australia's most respected and versatile young coaches.

He worked his way up at Fulham FC for a decade before taking over as head coach at A-League club Newcastle Jets in 2015, aged just 33.

Miller, currently coaching in Victoria's semi-pro NPL, believes coronavirus's financial impact will force clubs into a positive change of mindset in the A-League. 

But for that to happen, A-League clubs must apply a "creative" approach to their football departments and recruitment strategy as Australia as a nation works its way back from the crippling COVID economic and health crisis.

"There's no doubt the ability to attract high profile foreign players will be a big challenge for [A-League] clubs," Miller, based in Melbourne, told FTBL.

"I'm a firm believer that it's time for more Australian players and coaches to be given the opportunity if they possess the right qualities.

"And chairpersons, boards, and CEOs [in the A-League] will have to start thinking creatively with how they establish their football departments.

"That means, identifying highly skilled coaches with numerous skill sets such as fitness and match analysis and combining roles within the departments," the former Fulham man says.

"The greatest positive for me is the opportunity for the young player, the aspiring young coach that I meet every week that have never had the opportunity to work in a full-time environment."

This is already happening across the A-League as the season is concluded in an NSW hub.

NPL talents such as Thomas James and Yianni Perkatis (Glory), Patrick Antelmi (Western), and Mickey Neil (Jets) all have signed in the COVID shut down and have their chance to shine in the A-League.

At the same time, a number of foreign talents have also returned home, such as Panagiotis Kone (Western United), Tim Hoogland (Victory), and Markel Susaeta (City).

A-League foreign coaches Robbie Fowler (Roar) and Gertjan Verbeek (Adelaide) have also departed Australia.

Meanwhile, former A-League champions Brisbane Roar announced Aussie former player and academy coach Warren Moon as the club's head coach last week.

Western Sydney Wanderers announced Aussie JP de Marigny as a full-time head coach at the A-League powerhouse and former AFC Champions League winners.

Furthermore, A-League rivals Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory have employed interim local coaches to see both clubs through the current A-League season.

"Will the financial limitation within football departments support the recruitment of local coaches and players? We will have to wait and see," Miller asked.


Miller, from Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula, is like many younger coaches in Australia seeking a chance. In his case, in 2006 he traveled to London to further his career.

It paid huge dividends with the young Aussie eventually working for future England manager Roy Hodgson at Fulham, as well as Martin Jol and Mark Hughes.

Miller worked his way up in Fulham's set up from the academy to the first-team fitness coach to a dual role of fitness/assistant coach at a club that was in the English Premier League for nine of those 10 seasons.

Fulham's Aussie later briefly in the Socceroos set up in late 2013 before being the head coach at Newcastle Jets, though he was sacked in 2016 after one season following the club's change to Chinese owners.

Miller then became an assistant coach at Aalborg in Denmark in 2016/2017. It's been an extraordinary 15 years for this young coach, with Fulham's a key part of his resume.

"It was always my intention to return to Australia at some point with the knowledge and experience I gained overseas and work at the elite level here in Australia," says Miller, who keeps a close eye on Fulham's progress back in London as they push for a spot back in the EPL.

"I'm here to stay and I want to be a part of a leading Melbourne club.

"What's important to me at present is working within a driven football department that is pioneering and committed to excellence with a positive culture, whilst really having a strong emphasis on developing young Australian talent for the future," Miller added.

To this end, he's also running his own academy (http://www.identitypro.com.au) based in Melbourne where young Victorians are reaping the benefits of his experience in three countries including a decade at Fulham FC.

Miller added the ability to bridge the gap between NPL and A-League level is crucial.

"Having a viable and competitive second division will provide not only further opportunity, but it will also create a much more entertaining and engaging product with the threat of relegation and the prospect of promotion for teams throughout Australia."

Fulham receive multi-million pound transfer offer for player

Fulham have received an offer in the region of £22.5m from Villarreal for midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, according to Sky Sports.

Fulham broke their transfer record on Anguissa at the start of last season, with the London club spending £30m on the Cameroonian midfielder who was previously at Marseille.

Anguissa was one of many high-profile signings Slavisa Jokanovic brought to Craven Cottage last term, with the likes of Jean Michael Seri also arriving at the club.

Anguissa made 25 appearances as the Cottagers were relegated from the Premier League, and is yet to make a single appearance for Fulham since.

The 24-year-old has spent this season on loan in La Liga with Villarreal, scoring two goals and producing as many assists in a total of 39 appearances.

After an impressive loan spell in Spain, Sky Sports claim that Fulham have now received an offer in the region of £22.5m from Villarreal, who are looking to sign Anguissa on a permanent basis.

The Verdict

If Fulham miss out on promotion to the Premier League this season, then Parker will be looking to strengthen his squad and go one step further next term.

The funds from Anguissa's sale, then, would be absolutely beneficial for the Cottagers.

£22.5m for a player who is never going to feature for the club again is unreal business, and it could allow Parker to bring in some excellent players in the summer.

The squad they already have on paper, though, should have been winning automatic promotion this season, so they need to recruit wisely.

'Confident, optimistic' - Slaven Bilic adamant that West Brom deserve promotion more than Brentford and Fulham

Promotion is in West Brom's hands as they prepare for their final day clash with QPR.

West Brom boss Slaven Bilic has revealed his confidence ahead of tomorrow night's clash with QPR in the race from promotion to the Premier League.

The Loftus Road club will be out to upset the Baggies who must win to guarantee automatic promotion and avoid dropping into the lottery of the play-offs,

Brentford (who take on Barnsley) and Fulham (Wigan) are breathing down their neck and both face relegation-threatened sides on the final day.

But it's Albion's one-point headstart that has left them sitting in pole position to snatch a return to the top flight.

The 80-year-old said the side's heroics on the pitch against West Germany in the final boosted the nation's morale and is a footballing achievement that has never been bettered in our national game.

George also told how it infuriated him when rich individuals who take their wealth ­elsewhere are made Sirs while he and his team-mates have been overlooked.

Of the 1966 winners only hat-trick star Sir Geoff Hurst and Sir Bobby Charlton have ever been knighted – despite repeated campaigns.

Speaking ahead of Jack's funeral on Tuesday, Fulham legend George called for the law to be changed to allow ­posthumous ­knighthoods.

He said: "I think the entire team should have got knighthoods and still do, even though some are not with us.

"I would love to see the likes of Bobby Moore and Jack Charlton get knighthoods. Obviously the law needs to change, but why not change it?

"What gets under my fingernails is when ­knighthoods are given to these people who make millions of millions of pounds and move abroad.

"A lot of the team aren't with us any more, sadly, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve to be knighted.

"It's not just because we won the World Cup. Look at Jack, he did a lot for the game but he also did a lot of charity work too.

"Bobby Moore didn't get anything, big Jack didn't get anything. They were pretty much up there with other people who have got knighthoods.

"I don't want to ask for a knighthood but I do think all of us, both those who are still around and those who aren't, deserve it. I think it's the greatest sporting achievement in the history of our country.

"It did so much good for the country. A huge amount of money was raised one way or another. And it boosted morale.

"A lot of people in the country were a lot happier because of what we did."

Former right-back George is one of just five surviving members of Alf Ramsey's World Cup winning team ­alongside Sir Bobby, Sir Geoff, Nobby Stiles and Roger Hunt.

The other six, including skipper Bobby Moore, died without being knighted.

George was awarded an MBE in 2000 along with Alan Ball, Ray Wilson, Stiles and Hunt. He added: "It took me 34 years to get my MBE, 34 years after we won the World Cup, so who knows what's going to happen now.

"My wife Daphne would love to be a Lady. She wouldn't dream of asking, but I think she would be absolutely delighted, as would my whole family."

George said he was ­devastated when he heard former Ireland manager Jack had died last week at the age of 85.

But paying tribute he called the Leeds legend the best defender he played with.

He added: "I was delighted to have him as a centre-half in the England team, it made my job easier. He got nearly everything in the air.

"He was a very, very good player. There was nothing fancy about him, nothing fancy at all. He was one of those guys if you were going to have an argument, don't have an argument with him.

"He was never shy in coming forward. Everyone knew him and everyone admired him. It's such a sad loss."

Crowds are expected to flock to Jack's home town of Ashington, Northumberland, to pay their respects at his funeral.

According to a report from Dutch news outlet Algemeen Dagblad, AZ Alkmaar are keen to sign Huddersfield Town loanee Terence Kongolo.

Huddersfield Town's position heading into the summer transfer window has some question marks surrounding it. The Terriers are managerless after sacking Danny Cowley, despite all but securing their Championship status.

It awaits to be seen if a replacement is found quickly to allow Huddersfield Town to press on with their recruitment plans. In the meantime, loaned out defender Terence Kongolo is attracting interest from elsewhere.

Eredivisie outfit AZ Alkmaar have been linked with a summer move for Kongolo, as per a report from Algemeen Dagblad. The defender is currently out on loan with Fulham and it awaits to be seen what the Terriers have planned for the Dutchman beyond the end of this season.

AZ are said to be interested in bolstering their defensive ranks this summer, with Kongolo rumoured to be on their radar. The report adds the Dutch side are working on a deal for Kongolo, who has spent the second half of the season out on loan with Fulham.

Kongolo linked up with the Cottagers in the January transfer window, but a foot injury has limited him to only two appearances for the club across all competitions.

The 26-year-old defender signed for Huddersfield Town in 2018 after a successful loan spell at the John Smith's Stadium. Kongolo signed for a rumoured £17.5m (Sky Sports), so it will be interesting to see if the club can recoup that fee for him this summer.

Southampton midfielder Harrison Reed has enjoyed a thoroughly successful campaign on loan with Fulham. The 25-year-old has starred in Scott Parker's midfield, coming on leaps and bounds in his stint at Craven Cottage.

Now, it has emerged that Reed's form with Fulham is catching the attention of potential admirers. The Southampton loanee is being eyed up by Premier League side Burnley, as per a report from the Daily Mail.

The report claims Burnley "among the teams" interested in Reed ahead of the summer transfer window having kept a close eye on his performances.

Injury problems have limited Reed's involvement at times, but he has made his presence known in the middle of the park. In total, Reed has played for Fulham 25 times in the Championship, laying on one assist in the process.

Reed has been with Southampton since joining their academy as a youngster. He made his way through their youth ranks and has played 30 times for their senior team. Most of the midfielder's experience has been picked up while out on loan, enjoying stints with Blackburn Rovers (36 appearances, three goals and seven assists) and Norwich City (one goal, four assists).

Now, with Burnley showing an interest in Reed, it will be interesting to see how his situation pans out. Whether or not Southampton would be willing to sell Reed after an impressive stint with Fulham, it awaits to be seen.

Fulham are still in with a shot of earning promotion back to the Premier League, so it would be interesting to see if a return to the top-flight prompted a pursuit of their own for Reed.

Norwich City are one of a host of clubs scouting Belgium Under-19 international Brandon Baiye.

The Clermont midfielder is interesting the Canaries after a handful of appearances in Ligue 2. The Telegraph are reporting that Fulham, Genk and Levante are also monitoring the progression of the youngster.

The 19-year-old developed with Club Brugge in Belgium before sealing a move to France last summer. Baiye made his professional debut with Brugge in a 5–2 Belgian First Division A win over Eupen in 2018.

He has two remaining years left on his contract - but interest in England could excite the youngster.

Baiye has been capped at every level of Belgium's youth level since Under-15, with his style on the pitch being compared to that of Chelsea midfielder Ngolo Kante.

If Scott Parker's side are promoted, he will be keen to strengthen his side to remain in the top-flight; equally, if they miss out on promotion, transfers will be required in order to clear the final hurdle next year.

£22.5 million could, therefore, provide a vital addition to the bank balance that Parker could reinvest.

Fulham's squad should, on paper, have been contending for automatic promotion so Parker will need to scout his targets wisely.

For a player who is unlikely to feature for Fulham again, it would appear naive for the Cottagers not to cash in.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful stint on loan at Villareal this season, and there is no doubting that the central midfielder has pedigree and ability.

But, Fulham just cannot turn this down with it pretty clear that he's not a fundamental part of Scott Parker's plans.

Anguissa has caught the eye with some impressive performances for Villarreal this season, and they're clearly determined to get their man in the summer transfer window.

Anguissa is certainly one of the players they should look to move on in the summer, and it should be a no-brainer for the Cottagers to cash-in on him.

Swansea need one of the above to slip up and lose - and in the case of Forest for there to be a bit of a goal swing, too - so all they can do is pile the pressure on and see what happens.

Cardiff should win, but things might be difficult for Forest. They should, however, get at least a draw, which will be enough to seal their spot.

The relegation race - who will go down?
It gets a little complicated down the bottom! Let's get the easy bits out of the way first. You cannot really see Hull staying up from here, and I think Barnsley will be beaten at Brentford - despite their brilliant effort against Nottingham Forest on Sunday to keep themselves in contention.

I happen to think Wigan will beat Fulham and that will be enough to take them up and just about clear once you have factored in the 12-point deduction.

Luton have got decent opponents in Blackburn, but they just need the win that little bit more so I have to back them to scrape a victory at Kenilworth Road.

That leaves Charlton. Of all the times to head to Leeds and Elland Road, this is probably the best. However, we saw on Sunday that Marcelo Bielsa's side are pretty motivated, and they will want to end the season on a high. Even with nothing to play for, I think they will be too good for the Addicks.

However, any ambition Fulham had of retaining the 25-year-old's service long-term is complicated by interest from Burnley, as per Football Insider.

Here, our writers assess whether there's any chance of Reed sticking with the Cottagers beyond this season...

It certainly affects their chances.

Reed has been a real bright spark for Scott Parker and Fulham this season, with his tenacious yet tidy performances really catching the eye.

At 25 years old, Reed will want to ensure the next club he goes to will ensure he's a frequent starter in the first-team, and you do wonder whether Southampton may yet offer him that after a stellar campaign in west London.

I'd be surprised if Fulham did not make a play to sign Reed on a permanent deal this summer though, and their chances of sealing an agreement would most likely be heightened if they achieve promotion to the Premier League.

Ultimately, the division that the Cottagers find themselves in this season may play a large role in any potential agreement.

Is Reed a guaranteed starter at Burnley? It's hard to say, they have a number of proficient central midfielders at the club already so it may be harder to get in the team – and he may see more opportunities for a starting berth at Fulham next season if they do move.

I think they'll be fighting a losing battle in the summer.

Reed has certainly made a positive impact on the Fulham team this season, as they look to make a swift return to the Premier League.

But with Burnley reportedly interested in reaching an agreement to land his signature, I think they'll be in pole position to sign him.

If Fulham aren't to win promotion into the top-flight, then it seems almost impossible that Reed will sign for them permanently. 

Burnley are a team that are now established in the Premier League, and you would imagine that a move to Turf Moor will tempt Reed more than a move to Fulham for another season.

George Harbey

I think Fulham have got to be confident about their chances of signing Reed on a permanent basis, although a lot does depend on whether they win promotion or not.

Reed has been impressive for Fulham this season and he has been bright since the season's restart having recovered from a couple of frustrating injury problems, and his tenacity in the middle of the park is key for Scott Parker's side.

At Craven Cottage, he is playing under a manager who trusts in him and believes in him, which must be really relieving for the player as he has found it tough to break into Southampton's first-team thus far.

If Fulham go up and can negotiate a good fee for the midfielder then I don't see why a deal can't be done, but you've got to consider whether the player would like to drop back down into the Championship if Fulham stay down, when there is potentially an opportunity to play in the Premier League for an impressive team like Burnley.

It's a tough one, for sure.

Now, after an impressive campaign on loan with Villareal, the La Liga club have made an offer to try and sign Anguissa on a permanent basis.

A report from Sky Sports has claimed that Fulham are weighing up a £22.5m offer for Anguissa. The Yellow Submarine are keen to bring Anguissa in on a permanent basis after starring in their midfield. Anguissa has scored two goals and laid on two assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.

This is not the first time Anguissa has been subject of interest from Spain this season. Spanish giants Real Madrid have been linked with the 24-year-old, as covered here on The72. However, links with the Madrid titans have not materialised into anything serious.

It will be interesting to see if a permanent move to Villareal materialises this summer. With a £22.5m offer on the table, Fulham could look to cash in on the midfielder to add funds to their transfer budget for this summer.

After 45 games across 11 months, it all comes down to a Wednesday evening in late July.

For three of London's five Championship teams, their fate is undecided entering the final evening.

The only team that has not had much to play for in recent weeks could still have a say on their local rivals' destiny, while the other only had their play-off hopes ended last weekend.

Plenty of eyes will fall on Brentford, who host Barnsley at Griffin Park not knowing whether it will be the last game at the old stadium or they must return next week for a play-off second leg against one from three of Cardiff, Swansea and Nottingham Forest.

Thomas Frank's team missed the chance to climb above West Bromwich Albion into second place when losing away to Stoke on Saturday but the Danish head coach said his players turned up at training on Monday morning "with fire in their eyes."

Fulham have passed up their own opportunities but Scott Parker's team can still finish in the automatic spot if they win away to Wigan, Albion lose against Queens Park Rangers and Brentford fail to win.

Should Slaven Bilic's side take three points, both Brentford and Fulham will be in the play-offs with their away legs first regardless of their own results.

"We're not too concentrated on it," Fulham striker Bobby Cordova-Reid insisted. "We just need to win our game and see what happens."

Down near the bottom, Charlton Athletic face champions Leeds United at Elland Road knowing a positive will ensure their safety, although the EFL's decision process regarding Wigan's points deduction means relegation may not be settled until long after the final whistles are blown.

They sit in 21st, ahead of Luton Town on goal difference, Barnsley by two points and Hull City by three. Should Wigan be deducted 12 points for entering administration they would be on 46 before factoring in their result tonight.

Lee Bowyer, the Charlton manager who has done a remarkable job amid off-field chaos for almost the entire campaign, believes there is more pressure on the three sides below them in the table.

"If we had to go to Leeds, win and rely on other results, that's a different conversation," he said. "But if we win, we're safe. We don't necessarily have to win, it's the teams below us that absolutely have to win, they are the ones chasing us.

"We have a tough game but so do the teams around us. There will be some twists and turns on the night, that will happen, we just have to stay calm and believe that what we do on the night will keep us in the division."

If Charlton's aim is survival, Brentford's is to complete a fairytale for the ages.

Before the Championship came off hiatus, they were 10 points behind West Brom but have hauled them in gradually before Saturday's blip at Stoke.

The disparity in budgets and resources, alongside the Griffin Park farewell, suggests promotion is written in the stars, right?

Frank is more realist than dreamer, though he is more than aware of the wider context for a club that was last in the top-flight in 1947.

"If anyone told us before this season that little Brentford would be one point behind big West Bromwich and fighting for top two promotion, we'd have taken it any day," he said. "I promise you the players and the staff are so ready to play."

Like Fulham and Charlton, they want to look after their own business before worrying about results elsewhere but head of analytics Luke Stopforth will be keeping an eye and feeding the info through to assistant manager Brian Riemer via an earpiece, who will then pass the necessary details to Frank and the players.

"I'm not interested to know anything before half time, that doesn't change anything," Frank added and the same will go across the grounds on a concluding evening that has the potential to surpass previous dramatic endings in this wild division.

That's according to Algemeen Dagblad, who say the two clubs are negotiating a loan deal for the 26-year-old defender.

Kongolo joined Huddersfield in an £18m deal from Monaco in July 2018 but has endured a difficult time at the club since then, suffering relegation from the Premier League last year.

This season has been equally difficult in the Championship, with the Terriers struggling and Kongolo finding himself shipped out on loan to Fulham midway through the January transfer window.

He's only managed one game for the Cottagers since then, with a serious foot injury meaning his only appearance came in the 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup Fourth Round.

He could now be set for a second loan spell away from Huddersfield, with them already negotiating a deal with AZ for him.

Algemeen Dagblad report that the Dutch side are 'working on the lease' of the 26-year-old defender, who already played in the Netherlands with Feyenoord earlier in his career.

They are on the hunt for a left-footed centre back this summer to replace the departed Stijn Wuytens, with manager Arne Slot publicly admitting he wants to strengthen in that position.

Kongolo would fill the void nicely, as well as being able to 'handle many positions', and the two clubs are now 'discussing' a potential deal.

Fulham are considering Villarreal's big-money offer for Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa following an impressive loan spell with the LaLiga club, the PA news agency understands.

The 24-year-old made a deadline-day switch from Marseille to Craven Cottage in August 2018 but struggled to make an impact as the west London club were relegated from the Premier League.

Anguissa, who still has three years left on his Fulham contract, was shipped out on a season-long loan to Villarreal last July and the midfielder looked back to his best in Spain.

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have been linked with the impressive Cameroon international, who the Yellow Submarine are attempting to keep at the Estadio de la Ceramica.

Villarreal had the option of making the transfer permanent at the end of the season as part of their loan agreement. Fulham are understood to be considering an offer in the region of 25 million euros (£22.2million) that suggest the clause has not been triggered.

Scott Parker's side are fourth in the Sky Bet Championship and two points off the final automatic promotion spot ahead of Wednesday's season finale at Wigan.

EXCLUSIVE: Arter admits fears over Fulham's Prem promotion hunt

Fulham midfielder Harry Arter has admitted he feared the Championship season would not reach a conclusion, as he gave an insight into the race to claim the final Premier League promotion spot.

The final round of Championship matches will be played on Wednesday, with Leeds United confirmed as champions and West Bromwich Albion battling it out with Brentford and the Cottagers for second place.

Yet Arter has told TEAMtalk that he doubted whether the campaign would ever get to this point, after the Covid-19 pandemic halted the season in March.

"It looked like we might not get this season finished, but we have all put far too much into it to just admit defeat and declare it null and void," the 30-year-old said.

"Personally, I couldn't wait to get back and it made me appreciate how much this game means to me.

"I have always loved football, but you can take it for granted when you have been playing at the top level for a decade and when it is all taken away from you, it is a massive shock."

The Republic of Ireland international revealed how he kept his own fitness up, as well as the fact the players had very little knowledge of what was going on.

"Filling the days was not easy. I found myself doing six and seven kilometre runs and got addicted to it," Arter added. I even picked up a little injury because I was running too much, but I had to find something to do to fill the days.

"The Championship clubs told their players to treat the lockdown as a holiday period and yet when there was no date given when we might come back, you couldn't switch off just in case you were called back in to start the season.

"In the end, that's what happened. We didn't have any inside knowledge on what the plan was for the Football League and when it happened, it wasn't ideal."

ARTER ASSES THE PROMOTION RACE
Fulham have been in the promotion mix for most of the season and going into their final game, at home to Wigan, the Cottagers still have an outside chance of automatic promotion.

However, they are reliant on West Bromwich Albion and Brentford dropping points in their games against Queens Park Rangers and Barnsley respectively. Should Fulham not secure automatic promotion, they will have another chance in the play-offs.

"Leeds have been the stand-out side in the Championship all season," Arter added. "They have a top manager and play a high energy game that is tough to stop when they are at their best.

"West Brom have a lot of experience in their team and that's important when you get to this stage of the season and it is all about getting over the finishing line, with the lack of crowds meaning players need to motivate themselves if the game is not going their way.

"Brentford are also right in the promotion mix and that is not by accident. They are a good side and have beaten us twice this season, so they could sneak one of the automatic places and will be a threat if they are in the play-offs.

"It looks like we will be in the play-offs and we believe we can beat anyone when we perform at our best, but the truth is there is not a lot between most of the teams in this league."

ARTER 'HAPPY' TO RETURN TO BOURNEMOUTH
With the season drawing to a close, Arter's future is up in the air. He is on loan from Premier League strugglers Bournemouth, having also spent last season on loan at Championship side Cardiff.

However, if he ends up returning to his parent club he is more than happy to do so.

"I love that club and I know how much Bournemouth means to the manager as well, so I just hope they can stay up," he added. "I will be more than happy to go back to Bournemouth for pre-season and do everything I can to get back into their plans."

Who Cardiff City would want in the play-offs with wobbling West Brom, Fulham and Brentford all possible

The Bluebirds need only a point to ensure their place in the play-offs, but who would be the best opponent for them to face should they make it?

Cardiff City need just one point in their final match of the season to secure their place in the play-offs.

The Bluebirds welcome Hull City on Wednesday night and sit in sixth position in the table, three points ahead of South Wales rivals Swansea City.

The Swans will hope both Cardiff and Nottingham Forest lose on Wednesday night as it would grant them the best opportunity to sneak into those top-six spots.

But Neil Harris will doubtless be confident his side can beat, or at least draw with lowly, all-but relegated, Hull City at Cardiff City Stadium on Wednesday evening.

City have been excellent since the season restarted last month and have earned their spot in the play-off places. Just one more positive result will book their spot in the post-season, which has been Harris' aim since he took the reins back in November.

As dramatic as the race is for fifth and sixth place is, though, the battle for that second automatic promotion spot is still up for grabs.

Leeds United were crowned Championship champions last weekend, meaning their top spot is secured, but any of West Brom, Fulham or Brentford could yet secure second place.

Fulham are currently in fourth on 80 points, with Brentford a point above them and West Brom a point above them, meaning every eventuality is still possible on the final night.

But, of those three teams, who would Cardiff want to face most in the play-offs? We take a closer look below.

West Brom

Spent practically all season in the top-two spots and probably deserve to go up automatically - but football doesn't work like that, as we all know.

Back in October, the Baggies routed Neil Warnock's Bluebirds at The Hawthorns, producing a 4-2 victory up in the Midlands. The scoreline being saved by a late Danny Ward double for City.

But there was enough in that game to give City hope, West Brom were just clinical that day and the visitors couldn't really cope.

Those signs of positivity, however, bore fruit back at Cardiff City Stadium in February when Neil Harris' side came out on top in a deserved 2-1 victory.

The Baggies are also in something of a dip of form, too, at the moment, having not won in their last three outings, ultimately gifting the teams below a shot at the automatic spots.

Brentford

One of the most devastating attacking displays Cardiff City have come up against all season was at Griffin Park back in December.

It was only 2-1 to Brentford in the end, thanks to a Marlon Pack thunderbolt, but the Bees were dominant for the most part and it could have been far more than just two.

In the return fixture, too, Brentford got off to a flyer, putting City 2-0 down once again only this time Harris' side came back to rescue a draw.

But Thomas Frank's side are a real, real handful and if they hit you early it is so difficult to win the game.

Following that draw with the Bluebirds in February, in fact, Brentford won their following eight games, a run which ended only last weekend with a shock defeat by Stoke City.

They are certainly the form side, barring that blip against the Potters, and will be fierce play-off opponents for anyone, unless they make it into the second automatic spot, of course.

Fulham

Fulham, in truth, looked no great shakes at Cardiff City Stadium earlier in the season. Josh Murphy put the Bluebirds ahead early on and City looked comfortable enough for the most part.

Aleksandar Mitrovic hit back before half-time and it was a bit of a body blow, really. Harry Arter was given his marching orders in the second half and the Bluebirds piled on the pressure, but to no avail.

But, importantly, the Cottagers' most recent match with Cardiff City is still fresh in the memory, a 2-0 win for the hosts in West London less than two weeks ago.

Cardiff were completely off the pace that night, truth told, but Fulham played some slick stuff at times and looked good for their win.

Scott Parker's side have not lost their last six fixtures, either, and momentum can be crucial at this stage of the season.

The Mitrovic factor, during the play-offs, is also something which simply cannot be ignored.

The verdict

Let's not beat around the bush, all three are incredibly tough opponents. It is why they are in the top four spots in the table in the first place.

But if there was one team Cardiff might prefer over all others it's West Brom.

Of the three, they are the only team Cardiff have beaten this season and that could count for a lot.

The form, at this time of the season, must also be a factor, too, with the Baggies appearing to be suffering more than others to keep their pace as relentless as it once was.

Harris will be confident, of course, that his side can beat any of the teams in the play-offs, should they make it there, and rightly so, they have been sublime for the most part since football returned.

But if there were one team they would like to play? The Baggies have to just edge it.

Club's 'priority' is to sign Fulham man – But doubts about ability to pay asking price

Villarreal are keen to see midfielder Franck Zambo Anguissa continue at the club next season, but it's unclear whether they will pay Fulham's €25m asking price.

The 24-year-old has spent this season on loan with the Spanish side, departing Fulham in the summer after a disastrous first year at the club.

He moved to Craven Cottage in a £22m deal from Marseille in 2018 but struggled as the Cottagers were relegated from the Premier League that season.

He has since rebuilt his reputation at Villarreal, with a series of impressive performances in La Liga this year.

A report from Sky Sports claimed that Fulham were considering a €25m offer for the on-loan midfielder from Villarreal, who are keen to make his loan deal permanent.

El Periódico de Mediterráneo cover that report today and say that the reported price 'does not conform' to what they have been told from inside Villarreal.

They confirm that Villarreal's 'priority' is to keep the midfielder for at least one more season as he has 'adapted perfectly both on and off the field' but they already made a 'significant economic outlay' in the January transfer window to sign Paco Alcácer.

The indication from the newspaper is that they don't have the money to pay such a fee to sign Anguissa from Fulham, although this is disputed elsewhere.

La Razón have also covered the situation and back up the claim that Villarreal are keen to improve their midfield and 'make a leap in quality in its workforce.'

This is why they have replaced managed Javi Calleja with Unai Emery and why they intend to 'exercise the purchase option' they have on Anguissa, which is €25m.

The website states confidently that the Yellow Submarine 'will acquire' him and that he will continue his career in La Liga with the club.

Clearly, that's a very different stance from El Periódico de Mediterráneo, whose stance was seemingly that the money isn't there.

Either way, it's clear that Villarreal are interested in signing Anguissa from Fulham permanently and Fulham may be able to make a profit on a transfer that really didn't work out for them.
