Title: 5-4-1 against Blades?
Post by: We Are Premier League on October 20, 2020, 11:35:48 PM
Havent had a chance to watch the game from the weekend but just came across this article that say that we played 5-4-1 with Robinson and Cavaleiro as wing backs...

Hope that's true as i think that will work really well for us when Kongolo or Andersen is fit and we can play Tete or Aina on the right.

Would also explain why Cava has not been seen higher up the pitch.

Did not read the bit about Sheffield but did read about Fulham.  Interesting to read not only about Cav playing more defensive but also interesting to read that Zambo-Anguissa and Tom Cairney dropped to act as a pivot and played parallel to each other.  For me that says Anguissa and Cairney played deep and because they were parrallel they were never really in the attack.

Anyway good read.

It wasn't 5 at the back. And as souness said the other night, you only go with 3/5 at the back if you don't have two good centre backs. Well we do now. So the last thing we need to do is play another defender when we are struggling for goals.

While the main formation looked to be a 4-2-3-1, this image shows how once in the defense Fulham converted to a 5-4-1.

Article also goes on to say that once Fulham converted to the attack that a 3-2-4-1 formation was played.

In reality, this is nothing new.  I feel that in the modern game teams are set up in a base formation but transform on the fly depending on how the coaches have set them up to defend or attack.

Again, thought it was a good article.

The American television crew with Tim Howard mentioned this at halftime. He also alluded to it when the club played Wolves, except in that match it was Joe Bryan getting in to a 5 man defensive line.
