Title: Games in June
Post by: Ludlow Richard on May 31, 2022, 04:25:13 PM
It's the 1st of June tomorrow  (you wouldn't know it, it's pelting down here in Ludlow).

Anyway, in our long and illustrious history we have played fewer competitive games in June than in any other month. We have played just six games in June since arriving in the league in 1907: two in 1947, after the massive disruption caused by the severe winter; one in 2011, in the first Qualifying Round for the Europa League; and three in the Covid-hit season of 2019/20. Five of the six games were in the league, with only one of those at home, which inevitably we lost.....to Brentford.

Our league record in June is pretty awful: P5 W1 D1 L3 GF3 GA9. On the plus side our only league win from those five games was against.....QPR. And trying to be really really positive, we have a 100% cup record in June, with our 3-0 win in 2011 against NSI Runavik from the Faroe Islands.

The chances are that there may only be a handful of fans who attended more than one of these six June games. The two games in 1947 are 75 years ago; the three games in 2020 were behind closed doors; and that leaves NSI Runavik.

In July 2002 we played five games in the Intertoto cup and in July 2011 we played Crusaders twice in the Europa League .

I remember the Runavik game quite well.  Wimbledon was going on at the time.  Our players looked like they would have rather been by the Med.  The Faroese looked a happier bunch, but for them the banks of the Thames practically is the Med.
