Silva: We'll grow stronger
Marco Silva insisted Fulham will 'grow stronger' after the disappointment of being edged out of the League Cup semi-final by Liverpool after a tight second leg at Craven Cottage.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, the Whites recovered from a slow start and the concession of Luis Diaz's deflected opener to equalise on the night through Issa Diop and stage a late rally – but they weren't able to find a second goal to send the tie to extra-time. Silva told his post-match press conference:

"[It was a] difficult match, like we expected really. They were leading 2-1. so we knew that it was a game where we had to score two to play the final. Performance-wise, overall the game wasn't our best performance, I have to say, but I would prefer to start with the desire and the attitude and the commitment from our players. They gave everything. They gave everything from the first minute until the last minute to keep the semi-final open until the last minute of the game.

The first thirty minutes were difficult for us. Probably too emotional, probably a bit more nervous than Liverpool. The details make the difference. Tonight, I felt that they were much calmer than us. For them it's another game. And for most of our players, probably apart from three or four or five, it's new for them to play semi-finals of this competition.

We were not able to keep the possession like normally we do, to make three or four passes between us. We lost many, many balls when we were building our attack or moments for our counter-attack as well. Even so, the first big chance was for ourselves. Before they scored, we had a big chance with João [Palhinha] in that corner, something that we planned with Andreas [Pereira] and the moves inside the box – they were really good. João should hit the target in that situation. It's a completely different game probably with that possible goal. We were not ruthless, we were not clinical in that moment.

Liverpool scored in a moment that we have to defend much better on our right hand side – a big diagonal from them, first challenge our central defence should be closer in that moment to cover our full-back, and we were not able to do it in the best way, and they scored, creating a more difficult scenario for us.

Second half they started better than us, but we started to grow during the game. We knew that we needed a goal to boost the game, to lift the team, to lift the crowd as well. We had that moment with Andreas off the post. If we scored [to make it] 1-1 a little bit earlier it could have been different. And after, when we scored the goal, of course the game became even more emotional.

The attitude was everything, the players gave everything, but it was not enough. I think [we were] not performing at our best level, I have to say. I think we did create some very good chances to score more goals. The truth is we were not ruthless enough, and Liverpool is in the final."

Despite the disappointment of losing two tight ties, Silva feels there is plenty to be positive about and praised the fervent support of the home faithful who heeded his call to provide an electric atmosphere.

"I think the club is going to grow with these type of moments, the players as well. I want to thank our fans because the environment and atmosphere in our stadium was brilliant tonight. I know that it's a special night, we're playing a Semi-Final, but we need this type of moments much more because the club is going to be stronger on the pitch with this type of support from outside.

FA make Newcastle United v Fulham official decision following Chelsea Carabao Cup controversy
Newcastle United are back in action this weekend when they take on Fulham in the FA Cup.

The FA have revealed who will take charge of Newcastle United's first FA Cup Fourth Round appearance under Eddie Howe on Saturday when they make the trip to the capital to face Fulham at Craven Cottage. A spot in the Fifth Round - and one step closer to another Wembley appearance - is on offer for the winner of the match that pits United against yet more Premier League opposition.

Fulham will be the fourth Premier League opponents Newcastle have faced in domestic cup competitions so far this season having faced both Manchester teams and Chelsea in the Carabao Cup. The only domestic cup draw that has seen Newcastle facing off against lower league opposition came in the last round as they defeated Sunderland 3-0.

Their reward for that win was a clash with Marco Silva's side at Craven Cottage on Saturday (7pm kick-off). The FA have announced that Jarred Gillett will be the man to referee the game.

Gillett's first ever Premier League match came during Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Watford back in September 2021 and the Magpies have a fairly good record when the Australian has been in the middle. However, their last outing refereed by Gillett saw them dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge back in December.

That game saw Moises Caicedo escape a red card after catching Anthony Gordon with his studs. As per competition rules, that match did not have VAR in operation.

The Australian will be assisted by Darren Cann and Mark Scholes on Saturday whilst Tony Harrington will be on VAR duty. VAR is in operation during FA Cup games that take part in stadiums that have been equipped with the technology.

Newcastle's win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the last round did not have the technology in operation. Newcastle's last appearance in the FA Cup Fourth Round saw them defeat Oxford United 3-2 after extra-time at the Kassam Stadium following a goalless draw at St James' Park four years ago. That season, which was halted due to the outbreak of Covid-19, saw Newcastle defeat West Brom in the Fifth Round but taste defeat to Manchester City in the quarter-final.

Fulham vs Newcastle United: Lee Ryder's FA Cup preview ahead of fourth round weekend
The Magpies travel to the capital for a chance to progress into the last 16 of the FA Cup and keep their season alive

So much rides on Newcastle United's trip to Craven Cottage on Saturday night in terms of keeping the season alive.

A controversial 7pm kick off and tricky away day for Newcastle fans puts extra importance on this fixture. But it is the last chance to keep dreams of silverware alive for another year.

Eddie Howe said his only wish in round four was to get a home tie but after a season in which Newcastle have been paired with Man United and Chelsea away in the Carabao Cup and Sunderland at the Stadium if Light in this competition, he would be handed another tough tie. Fulham scraped past Rotherham in the last round and were on Carabao Cup duty last night but Marco Silva's side will be up for the FA Cup in front of their own fans.

Lee Ryder's prediction
Newcastle should have enough to negotiate the tie but I still think this will be a tricky one. I think it'll end all square on Saturday night and the game goes to a replay.

Referee
Jarred Gillett (Australia)

Betting
Fulham are 2/1 to beat Newcastle while a win for United is priced at 5/4. The draw is 13/5.

Marco Silva rues 'big chance' £20m Fulham player missed vs Liverpool last night
Fulham manager Marco Silva was left rueing the early missed chance from Joao Palhinha as Fulham narrowly missed out on reaching the Carabao Cup Final against Liverpool.

Issa Diop cancelled out Luis Diaz's early goal but Fulham couldn't find a late winner leaving Marco Silva frustrated at full-time.

The Portuguese manager was speaking to the club's official website after a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat on aggregate against the Premier League leaders.

It was always going to be a very difficult task for Fulham against the best team in the country right now.

Liverpool are on a phenomenal run and even without the likes of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are incredibly difficult to beat.

The Reds dominated possession for large spells and didn't allow Fulham to pass their out from the back.

However, they got a foothold in the game early on and from their first corner of the match they executed a pre-planned set-piece routine that should have led to the opening goal.

Joao Palhinha was in space in the box and had a free volley at Caoimhin Kelleher's goal.

Unfortunately, his shot flew over Liverpool's bar and Silva admitted that Palhinha's miss was one of the biggest chances of the game for Fulham.

Against the very best teams, you can't afford to miss chances like this and Luis Diaz's deflected strike made the hosts pay.

Silva left frustrated by Palhinha miss against Liverpool
Speaking about the match, Silva said: "We were not able to keep the possession like normally we do, to make three or four passes between us. We lost many, many balls when we were building our attack or moments for our counter-attack as well. Even so, the first big chance was for ourselves.

"Before they scored, we had a big chance with João in that corner, something that we planned with Andreas and the moves inside the box – they were really good. João should hit the target in that situation.

"It's a completely different game probably with that possible goal. We were not ruthless, we were not clinical in that moment."

The £20m midfielder didn't have his best game and was probably lucky not to pick up a booking.

He tried a few too many killer passes but still put in some phenomenal tackles and escaped difficult situations well.

Palhinha may not be the most natural choice for a key chance to fall to, but Silva clearly planned for the Portuguese to be the key man for his set pieces against Liverpool.

The team need to lift their spirits for their FA Cup match against Newcastle on Saturday evening.

Defeat in that match practically ends the season for the Whites unless they drop into a relegation battle.

'Brilliant' Newcastle player now set to start vs Fulham despite claims he could leave soon
Miguel Almiron is reportedly set to start against Fulham on Saturday, despite claims he could leave Newcastle United soon.

The Newcastle winger has been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Shabab in recent days.

It has been claimed that the Magpies are more willing to offload Miguel Almiron over the likes of Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier, with the latter receiving interest from Bayern Munich.

Journalist Ben Jacobs reported just on Tuesday that Al-Shabab have reached a 'provisional agreement' with Newcastle to sign Almiron.

The deal is not done yet but Almiron is said to be open to a move to the Middle East.

And despite being heavily linked with a move away from St James' Park, Almiron could yet start for Newcastle in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Almiron could start for Newcastle vs Fulham
The Athletic reports that Jacob Murphy is closing in on a return and Harvey Barnes isn't far behind the Englishman.

But Almiron is set to start against Fulham in the FA Cup and Aston Villa in the league due to Eddie Howe's lack of attacking options.

It's no secret that Howe hasn't had the best of luck when it comes to injuries this season.

Newcastle's squad has been ravaged by injuries to key players and even though Almiron could yet move on, Howe simply doesn't have any other options at the moment.

Almiron has been a regular at Newcastle this season, racking up a total of 31 appearances in all competitions.

The 29-year-old has been 'brilliant' under Howe but you can understand why the Magpies are willing to sell him.

They are in desperate need of reinforcements in midfield and they will have to sell to fund a possible move for a new midfielder.

Almiron certainly doesn't seem like the type of player whose performances will drop off amid links with a move away from Newcastle.

The Paraguayan cannot be faulted for his work-rate and we have no doubts that he'll continue to give his all over the coming games.

Chris Sutton predicts who will win in the FA Cup on Saturday – Fulham or Newcastle United
Amid all the January transfer window drama over the past few days, Newcastle United actually have an FA Cup tie with Fulham to focus on.

With so much rumour and speculation regarding who could come and go, the trip to Craven Cottage will offer a welcome break for Toon fans who just want to worry about the football. However, this FA Cup tie is absolutely massive.

The competition represents Newcastle's only real chance of silverware this season, while it could also be our best chance of getting back into Europe – unless we can rectify our Premier League form in the coming weeks.

Fulham away is our reward for beating Sunderland in the derby – an all Premier League affair down by the river Thames. There will be much less tension surrounding this game, but there is certainly a lot riding on it.

Eddie Howe will be desperate to go deep into the FA Cup and take the Magpies back to Wembley, but BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton believes that Newcastle United will be eliminated from the competition on Saturday night.

Chris Sutton thinks Newcastle will lose to Fulham
As part of his predictions for BBC Sport, Chris Sutton has backed Fulham to beat Newcastle 2-1 in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

"What on earth is happening at Newcastle? I keep reading reports that they are about to sell half their team," he wrote.

"I feel sorry for Magpies boss Eddie Howe because of the uncertainty over the future of some of his key players, but I don't see things going well for him at Craven Cottage either.

"Fulham are the kind of team who can turn it on at times, and they are going to throw everything they've got at Newcastle."

Newcastle under pressure against a decent Fulham side
Like many Toon fans, Sutton is bewildered about what has been going on at Newcastle over the past few days. So many of Howe's players have been linked with leaving, which has created a sense of uncertainty at St James' Park.

But Craven Cottage is the venue this weekend, and it is a ground where Sutton thinks Newcastle will suffer defeat.

He is certainly right about Fulham – they are a team capable of turning it on. We almost saw that when they arrived on Tyneside last month. They started the Premier League tie very brightly, only to lose 3-0 once Raul Jimenez was sent off.

It is going to be a difficult evening for Newcastle, but they will take confidence from their recent record at Craven Cottage. They have won their last three there, and there is a lot of pressure to make it four.

Sutton does not think they will, but we have confidence that Newcastle can get the job done and move into the fifth round of the FA Cup!

Fulham vice-chairman gives honest reaction after suffering Liverpool semi-final defeat
Liverpool will face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final after beating Fulham 3-2 in the last four.

Vice-chairman Tony Khan told of his pride after Fulham's Carabao Cup dream came to an end.

The Cottagers' chances of reaching Wembley were put paid to as they suffered a 3-2 semi-final loss on aggregate to Liverpool. The Reds earned a 2-1 win at Anfield in the first leg before Luis Diaz's strike earned a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night. Jurgen Klopp's side will now face Chelsea for the first piece of silverware up for grabs this season - a repeat of the 2022 showpiece which Liverpool won on penalties.

Fulham's wait to win a first major trophy goes. And while Khan was disappointed, he felt it was a 'wonderful' achievement to reach to the top four. Khan, who also serves as sporting director with his father Shahid owning the club, posted on X: "Thank you @fulhamfc supporters + huge thanks you all at the Cottage tonight. The run the squad made together with our staff + supporters in the League Cup has been wonderful. I'm sad it's come to an end tonight, but very grateful to you all for making it happen. Come on Fulham!"

Swansea U18 0-5 Fulham U18

Fulham Under-18s put on a show in Wales on Wednesday evening, firing five past Swansea City to progress to the FA Youth Cup Fifth Round.

Callum Osmand bagged himself an impressive hat-trick, before goals from Jonathan Esenga and Lemar Gordon helped extend our lead. The result tees us up for a Fifth Round clash away at a strong Liverpool side.

Ali Melloul made one change to the team that made the trip up to Swansea just a week ago before a frozen pitch led to an abandoned game.

Ollie Gofford stepped into the midfield, with Lemar Gordon starting on the substitutes bench as a result.

The first chance of the game went the way of the hosts, when a dangerous ball across our goal was heading straight to Rohan Davies, if not for an important block.

An Osmand header forced a save a few minutes later, before he put us ahead on the 12-minute mark. Samuel Amissah's ball over the top found our forward in space, and he beared down on goal before slotting home coolly.

The young Whites were looking dangerous going forward, with Bradley De Jesus heading wide at the back post after latching onto a Esenga cross.

Just a minute later, goalkeeper Kit Margetson stuck out a strong leg to deny Aaron Loupalo-Bi, who fired towards goal after being fed through by Josh King.

Swansea came close to an equaliser on 33 minutes, when Davies caught our 'keeper Marco Underwood out of position and so went for goal. Thankfully, his effort crashed into the side netting and we were let off.

Underwood was quickly called upon again for Ali Melloul's side, reacting quickly to hold on to Lestyn Jones' decent header.

Our lead was extended just before the break thanks to a lovely piece of team play. The neat move ended with King laying the ball off to Osmand, who tapped in to secure his brace.

That goal meant we went in at half-time with a two-goal cushion.

We started the second half strongly, with King's effort from just outside the area taking a deflection before bouncing wide.

Osmand deservedly secured his hat-trick on 66 minutes, cleverly nodding past Margetson after getting on the end of a King set-piece delivery.

Our best goal of the evening was scored by Esenga just three minutes later. The defender got on the end of a loose ball and, from about 30 yards out, slammed an incredible strike through a crowded area and into the roof of the net. 4-0.

Substitute Lemar Gordon was making an impact and forced Margetson into a decent diving save as we searched for more.

He soon got his name on the score sheet, though, when a ricochet's pass sent him through on goal. He made no mistake, rifling past Margetson to make it five.

A clinical and professional display from our youngsters, who return straight back to the action on Saturday to face Crystal Palace in the league.

: Underwood, De Jesus, Amissah, De Fougerolles, Esenga, Nwoko, King, Gofford, Olyott, Loupalo-Bi, Osmand

Subs: Kaiser, Slade, Nsasi, Quashie, Gordon, Ali-Wahid, Wingate

Preview: Fulham vs. Newcastle United - prediction, team news, lineups
Reeling from an agonising EFL Cup semi-final exit, Fulham will endeavour to earn a slice of knockout redemption on Saturday, when Newcastle United arrive at Craven Cottage for their FA Cup fourth-round affair.

The Cottagers required just the one goal to edge past Rotherham United in the third round, whereas Eddie Howe's troops put three past Tyne-Wear rivals Sunderland without reply.

Match preview
Despite blowing a one-goal lead to comeback kings Liverpool in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final, the writing was not on the wall for Fulham ahead of Wednesday's second leg, but Luis Diaz's deflected strike made the Cottagers' uphill climb that little bit steeper.

Fulham number one Bernd Leno would not have wanted to watch Diaz's goal back - the ex-Arsenal man ought to have done much better at his near post - but an erstwhile Liverpool attacker briefly got his goalkeeper out of jail in the second period, as Harry Wilson set up Issa Diop for the hosts' equaliser on the night.

Another 15 minutes was not enough for Marco Silva's team to force an additional 30, though, as they missed out on an all-West London final with Chelsea next month, but the Cottagers - still without a major trophy in their 145-year history - remain in contention for FA Cup stardom.

A strong XI made hard work of their third-round tie with a defence-heavy Rotherham crop, although Bobby Decordova-Reid's first-half strike sufficed as Fulham reached the fourth round for the fifth year running, but they have only progressed from one of their past four ties at this stage.

That triumph did come in the 2022-23 campaign, where they were eliminated in a fiery quarter-final with Manchester United after a fourth-round beating of Sunderland, who coincidentally fell to the supremacy of Saturday's visitors to Craven Cottage in this season's third phase.

Even though Newcastle possess European aspirations while their Tyne-Wear rivals Sunderland compete in the Championship doldrums, animosity remains highly prevalent between the two North-East adversaries, who renewed acquaintances at the Stadium of Light on January 6.

Magpies head coach Howe had overseen four successive losses in all tournaments ahead of the third-round affair, but thanks to a brace from Alexander Isak and an opening own goal from Daniel Ballard, Newcastle earned the bragging rights and a spot in round four without breaking too much of a sweat.

The visitors were on the verge of following up that derby delight with a statement victory over Manchester City, only to fall victim to a mesmerising Kevin De Bruyne cameo in a 3-2 Premier League loss, leaving them in the obscurity of 10th place in the top-flight table.

However, sending Sunderland packing meant that Newcastle snapped a miserable sequence of three successive third-round exits, but they have only advanced past round four once in the last 18 years, ironically bowing to Man City's superiority in a 2-0 defeat in the 2019-20 quarter-finals.

The Magpies are also at risk of setting an unwanted FA Cup record this weekend - they could become the first Premier League team to lose eight in a row against fellow top-flight sides in the competition - but their most recent Premier League victory was also a routine 3-0 beating of hosts Fulham on December 16.

Team News
Fulham's Africa Cup of Nations trio Fode Ballo-Toure, Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi will not be back at Silva's disposal just yet, as both Senegal and Nigeria made it through to the knockout stages, while Adama Traore's thigh is still giving him grief.

Given the 72-hour turnaround, a return to the matchday squad is considered highly unlikely for Traore, and while Silva did not lose any more players to injury in their EFL Cup semi-final second leg with Liverpool, fatigue may force a few alterations.

Wilson, Kenny Tete and Harrison Reed are among Wednesday's benched players who should force their way into Silva's thinking, while Leno ought to pass the goalkeeper's gloves over to Marek Rodak, as was the case against Rotherham.

With regards to Newcastle, Joelinton's season could very well be over after the midfielder underwent surgery on a thigh injury, while none of Sandro Tonali (suspended), Nick Pope (shoulder), Elliot Anderson (back), Joe Willock (calf), Harvey Barnes (foot), Matt Targett (thigh) or Jacob Murphy (shoulder) will be back for round four.

Howe also does not anticipate Callum Wilson returning from his calf concern in time for Saturday's game - next Tuesday's meeting with Aston Villa is a more realistic comeback date - but Tino Livramento should return from the illness which kept him out of the loss to City.

The latter's fellow right-back Kieran Trippier was the subject of interest from Bayern Munich mere days ago, but the German champions have now ended their pursuit of the England international, who should lead the Magpies out as captain at Craven Cottage.

Fulham possible starting lineup:
Rodak; Tete, Diop, Ream, Robinson; Reed, Palhinha; Wilson, Pereira, Decordova-Reid; Jimenez

Newcastle United possible starting lineup:
Dubravka; Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Miley; Almiron, Isak, Gordon

We say: Fulham 0-2 Newcastle United
Fulham deserve several pats on the back for their valiant efforts against Liverpool in midweek, but an energy-sapping midweek contest coupled with a confidence-sapping outcome puts them at risk of more knockout misery.

A two-week hiatus from competitive duty is just what the doctor ordered for a decimated Newcastle team, who should take full advantage of Fulham's weary legs to prolong their FA Cup adventure.

Lyon make approach for Fulham target André
With a move for Stade Rennais' Nemanja Matić (35) looking increasingly unfeasible, Olympique Lyonnais are considering midfield alternatives, including Fluminense's André (22), according to L'Équipe.

André has been heavily linked with a departure from Fluminense this month. The Brazil international was a key part of the Fluminense side that won the Copa Libertadores, and the expectation is that he will now make a move to Europe. Fulham have been linked with a move for the midfielder, as have their Premier League rivals Liverpool.

However, the English clubs may now have to prepare themselves for competition from Ligue 1. According to L'Équipe, Lyon could make a move before the end of the month. Stade Rennais' reluctance to sell Matić to a rival makes a move for the Serbian increasingly unlikely.

Fenerbahce's Ismail Yuksek has been approached by OL, as has André. However, the Brazilian's €30m price tag could prove prohibitive for Les Gones.

Fulham continue to have advantage in race for midfielder – Big asking price 'unsurmountable' for competition
Despite Fulham reportedly still being the best placed club to sign André from Fluminense, there is some competition for him.

The Craven Cottage side aren't the only interested ones in the Brazilian, as Lyon, who have John Textor as their owner, are also lurking around.

In fact, L'Equipe report that the Ligue 1 side have made 'an approach' for the Fulham target, although the news that follows will delight Marco Silva and co.

That's because the €30m+ asking price is seen as 'unsurmountable' by the French team, meaning that someone like Ismaïl Yuksek from Fenerbahçe might be a better choice for them.

We will now have to wait and see what happens between Fulham, Fluminense and André in the next few days, because time is running out for the Craven Cottage residents if they want to get a midfielder in before the end of the transfer window.

The Premier League club have been after the Brazilian since the summer, but never managed to get a deal over the line, as the player wanted to finish his campaign with his current club, in the process perhaps scuppering a chance of a big move to England.

Only time will tell...

Tottenham could sign 24-year-old, but Fulham want him too
Tottenham are still on the lookout for more January additions.

Spurs have already signed two players this month, but there have been continuous links to a new central midfielder.

Indeed, Conor Gallagher has been strongly linked with a move to Spurs, but that does sound like it will be a difficult deal to do.

With Gallagher potentially off the table, Spurs may have to look elsewhere, and one player who is said to be of interest to Tottenham is Atalanta's Ederson.

Speaking on Last Word on Spurs, Ben Jacobs has stated that Ederson is a player that Spurs could sign, but he warned that Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Fulham are also keen on the player.

Ederson an option for Tottenham
Jacobs shared what he knows about the 24-year-old.

"Wolves don't want to lose Gomes, Ederson does have some legs, Atleti have looked historically but are looking at other targets, Juventus are also in the race, and I'm also told that Fulham are looking and they're still in the market for some sort of central midfielder," Jacobs said.

Typical Tottenham signing
It really wouldn't be a surprise if Spurs did sign Ederson as this would be a typical Tottenham signing in recent years.

With Fabio Paratici still helping Spurs on a consultancy basis, it's not a shock to hear that Spurs are scouring Serie A for potential midfield additions.

We wouldn't be shocked at all if Ederson did end up at Tottenham, and while it would be a difficult deal to pull off due to the amount of competition, it may be worthwhile after the recent success of many of Paratici's recent finds from Serie A.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on towards the end of the January transfer window.

Fulham fixture confirmed
Manchester United's home game with Fulham next month is due to go ahead as planned.

The Reds' meeting with the Cottagers takes place at Old Trafford on Saturday 24 February, kicking off at 15:00 GMT, and will not be shown live on TV in the UK.

It would have been postponed had Marco Silva's men made it through to the Carabao Cup final, which is being staged at Wembley the following day.

However, the west Londoners could only draw 1-1 with Liverpool in the second leg of their semi-final, following a 2-1 loss at Anfield.

It means they miss out on facing neighbours Chelsea on 25 February, when the trophy we won last season is up for grabs.

United are scheduled to have five Premier League matches in February, and the Fulham clash offers the opportunity to complete the double over them, after a dramatic 1-0 triumph at Craven Cottage in the corresponding fixture. Bruno Fernandes grabbed an injury-time winner down by the Thames.

FEBRUARY'S LEAGUE FIXTURES
Thur 1: Wolves (A) 20:15 GMT
Sun 4: West Ham United (H) 14:00 GMT

Fulham vs Newcastle LIVE commentary: Eddie Howe aims to end woeful FA Cup record in all-Premier League tie – kick-off time, team news and talkSPORT coverage
Fulham welcome Newcastle to Craven Cottage on Saturday evening in the FA Cup fourth round, live on talkSPORT.

The Cottagers head into this tie following a Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool and they will be keen to bounce back from their midweek disappointment.

Marco Silva's side are back at home three days after that loss, this time taking on the Magpies who have lost five of their last six in all competitions.

Eddie Howe has had to deal with countless injuries this season and that has been taking a toll on his squad in recent weeks.

Fulham vs Newcastle: Bad omen
If history is anything to go by, Newcastle don't have much of a chance this weekend...

The Toon have lost their last seven FA Cup ties against fellow Premier League sides.

No top-flight team has ever been beaten in eight consecutive meetings with such opponents, meaning they will be aiming to avoid an unwanted record on Saturday.

It's going to be a difficult task though, especially when considering Howe's personal record in the competition.

The Newcastle manager has never won an FA Cup match against a Premier League opponent.

He has lost eight and drawn one of his nine attempts, losing two with Burnely and six as Bournemouth boss.

Fulham have lost all four of their FA Cup matches against Newcastle United, with those coming between 1908 and 1961. They also conceded at least four goals in every defeat.
Fulham reached the FA Cup fifth round last season, eliminating Sunderland in the fourth round. The Cottagers haven't progressed from the fourth round in consecutive seasons since doing so in three in a row between 2008-09 and 2010-11.

Fulham vs Newcastle: Team news
Fulham may rotate their side following Wednesday night's Carabao Cup exit.

Harrison Reed and Kenny Tete were both on the bench against Liverpool meaning they could come into the starting line-up this weekend.

Adama Traore remains out injured while Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi remain with Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations.

As for Newcastle, Joelinton's season looks to be over after he had surgery on his thigh.

Callum Wilson is likely to remain on the sidelines alongside Harvey Barnes, Nick Pope, Elliot Anderson, Joe Willock and Jacob Murphy.

Tino Livramento missed out of the Magpies' last game through illness but he will be back for this FA Cup tie.

There has been an average of six goals per game scored in the previous FA Cup ties between Fulham and Newcastle (24 goals in four games). In the entire history of the FA Cup from the first round onwards, the only fixture that has seen more goals per game (min. 4 matches) is Aston Villa vs Wednesbury Old Athletic (8.8, 35 goals in 4 games in the 1880s).

Fulham vs Newcastle: What has been said?
Silva admitted that his side struggled to meet the occasion of a semi-final as they were beaten by Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

He will be hoping the Cottagers respond well this weekend to remain in the FA Cup.

"Any club that is not used to being at this stage is going to develop," Silva said after losing in midweek.

"Not being so emotional, at the start of these games comes with experience of these types of games. It is a journey. In some things we are really growing.

"It was a difficult match as we expected. Performance-wise it was not our best performance, to be honest. But my players gave everything, with the attitude and commitment that they showed.

"We were not performing at our best level, I have to say. We were not ruthless enough. We knew before the match we wanted to play better tonight than we did."

Fulham vs Newcastle: talkSPORT coverage
This FA Cup fourth round tie will place on Saturday, January 27.

Kick-off at Craven Cottage is scheduled for 7pm.

talkSPORT will provide live coverage of the game presented by Adam Catterall.

Commentary will come from Jim Proudfoot and former Newcastle midfielder Darren Ambrose.

Club considering signing Fulham player 'immediately' – 'Everything revolves' around his decision
Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo is once again being linked with a January move to AC Milan.

The claims come from Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport, who writes that the 26-year-old could become a Rossonero in the coming days.

Adarabioyo's contract with Fulham expires at the end of the season, and even though there's no 'tug of war' between him and the club for a renewal, it's said he's been taking his time to make a final decision.

Milan are said to be watching that situation, and instead of possibly waiting until the summer to sign him for free, they're interested in bringing him 'immediately'.

Fulham considering Petar Musa swoop

Marco Silva's Fulham are reportedly interested in acquiring the services of the 25-year-old Benfica forward Petar Musa.
According to Record via Sport Witness, Fulham are looking to bolster their attack in the ongoing January transfer window and are considering making a late move for the services of Petar Musa. The 25-year-old is considering parting ways with Benfica, and the English club are a potential destination.

Fulham Scouring the Market for an Attacker
The Cottagers might be 13th in the Premier League, but they are only eight points clear of the drop zone. As a result, any addition to their ranks will help them fight for survival in the English top flight. Musa might not be the best in the world but he can certainly contribute in the final third of the pitch.

The Portuguese club acquired the services of the 25-year-old in the summer of 2022. He has since featured in 66 games and has contributed towards 22 goals. The Croat has done his bit, but he has not been able to establish himself as a regular starter. And despite having over three years left on his deal, his future at Benfica does not look bright.

In the ongoing season, he has featured in a total of 25 matches but has been on the pitch for less than 900 minutes. Musa only has eight goal contributions to his name, and he is clearly not the first-choice striker. And, the arrival of Marcos Leonardo from Brazil will see him go further down the pecking order.

Petar Musa on the Move?
The Croatian forward is unlikely to get much game time in the second half of the season. As a result, he would prefer to move elsewhere. Multiple clubs from across Europe are aware of the situation and are willing to sign him on loan with an option to buy.

Fulham are one of the clubs from England that are willing to acquire the services of Musa. They are in the relegation battle and given their recent form, they do need reinforcement. The Cottagers have suffered defeats in four out of their last five league games, they are amongst the lowest-scoring teams in the division and a new number nine is the need of the hour, with Jhon Cordoba also emerging as a target.

While the Cottagers' interest in him is new, they could soon put forward an offer for his services. It is a race against time and there will be competition from other clubs but Marco Silva's team will look to ensure they come out on top.

Birmingham City handed major Jay Stansfield transfer boost before deadline
Latest Birmingham City news from BirminghamLive includes clarity on Jay Stansfield's loan from Premier League side Fulham

Jay Stansfield has been given the green light to complete his season-long loan at Birmingham City.

Fulham have decided against recalling the 21-year-old, despite interest from a number of Championship clubs including promotion-chasing Ipswich Town. Stansfield will therefore be allowed to finish the season with Blues.

The forward is Blues' top goalscorer this season with nine across all competitions, plus two assists in the Championship, and supporters at St Andrew's have taken him to their hearts. Stansfield has scored two of his goals in the first three games of new manager Tony Mowbray's tenure.

Mowbray even suggested he would like to sign Stansfield permanently after the 2-1 win at Stoke City last weekend. The Blues boss said: "I think we should definitely be in the market for (Stansfield) if there's a number where he could definitely come and play here. I think he enjoys it that much.

"He would want to play in the Premier League if he thought he was going to play in the Premier League, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to go and sit on the bench, I'm sure he much prefers playing in the Championship and scoring goals. It's not our decision, it's Fulham's decision, but I know he's enjoying it."

With Stansfield staying put, Blues can focus on strengthening Mowbray's squad before the January transfer window closes next week. Andre Dozzell has already joined on loan from QPR and South Korean midfielder Paik Seung-ho could be next through the door.

Can Newcastle Advance To 5th Round Of The FA Cup At Fulham?
Newcastle will play at Fulham this Saturday in the 4th round of the Emirates FA Cup.

In the second leg of the Carabao (League) Cup, they drew at home to Liverpool 1-1 last night and went out of the competition on a 3-2 aggregate score over the two-game semi-final tie.

Maybe we can be the side that knocks Fulham out of the FA Cup this season?

The Newcastle squad has had a two-week break and have only recently returned to training, so we are hoping for a good performance at Craven Cottage, in the game that kicks off at 7:00 pm on Saturday evening.

A win is what we need and then on Tuesday we are at Aston Villa in the Premier League and that's another tough fixture for us.

But after a poor December and January in terms of results, we need to start picking up some wins.

Currently, a decent two-thirds of our readers think we can advance to the 5th round on Saturday – let's hope they are right about that.

Jurgen Klopp singles out 'sensational' Fulham player for praise after Liverpool defeat
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised the impact of Fulham winger Harry Wilson during the 1-1 second-leg Carabao Cup semi-final at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.

Issa Diop cancelled out Luis Diaz's first-half strike but it wasn't enough to take Marco Silva's men all the way to Wembley.

Speaking on the Football Daily Podcast, Jurgen Klopp was discussing a tough game for the Whites at Craven Cottage.

The odds were always going to be stacked against Fulham as they headed into the match looking to make up a 2-1 deficit and weren't helped by an early Joao Palhinha miss.

Things went from bad to worse when Timothy Castagne was beaten in the air by Luis Diaz and the Colombian's deflected strike found its way part Bernd Leno.

Liverpool were pressing with incredible intensity throughout the match and Fulham struggled to get into the game.

Joao Palhinha's passing wasn't quite on point, while Fulham didn't get Willian involved in the game enough.

In the last 20 minutes that changed when Silva made some changes and brought on Harry Wilson.

The Welshman replaced Bobby De Cordova-Reid and made an immediate impact.

Wilson set up Issa Diop for the equaliser and Jurgen Klopp praised the Fulham attacker.

Unfortunately, the Whites couldn't find a winner on the night that would have taken the game to penalties and from the spot, you would have backed Fulham to prevail after their performances from 12 yards this season.

Klopp praises Fulham substitute Wilson after Liverpool defeat
Reflecting on Fulham's resurgence, Klopp said: "Absolutely, absolutely, that's what you expect in that atmosphere.

"Then they go and score, a sensational situation from Harry Wilson and then we have to get it over the line and we did and we are really looking forward to Wembley as you can imagine."

Wilson may have considered himself a little bit unlucky not to have started the match as De Cordova-Reid didn't have the best game before the winter break against Chelsea.

However, as Klopp alluded to, Wilson did have the perfect impact for Fulham but couldn't do enough to help the Whites make a very rare trip to Wembley.

Instead, attention will turn to Saturday when Silva's side try and keep their FA Cup dream alive against Newcastle United.

Fulham have hope despite Carabao Cup heartbreak as experience breeds success
With Marco Silva at the helm, Fulham will continue to head in the right direction

Fulham came up just short in their bid to reach Wembley, but Marco Silva sees the club's run to their first-ever League Cup semi-final as part of a larger process.

Had Fulham seen off Liverpool, they would have reached only the third major final in their history. Silva is on a mission to improve that record.

He believes the experience they have gained from reaching the latter stages of a competition will help breed future success.

"You don't often have this type of moment [at Fulham]," he said before the game. "When you have the chance to feel this again and to play these types of games, they are special."

And Fulham fans knew this was a special night. It felt like a big occasion for the Cottagers, both in terms of this season and in their history.

But early promise quickly evaporated, as Liverpool stole an early lead through Luis Diaz and controlled the match to send Fulham out, despite a late equaliser on the night by Issa Diop.

"Any club that is not used to being at this stage is going to develop," Silva said afterwards. "Not being so emotional [and] nervous at the start of these games comes with experience of these types of games.

"It is a journey. In some things we are really growing. Last season, our Carabao Cup was not good enough. This season, we were able to be in the semi-finals."

Fulham's hopes of another cup run this season now rest with the FA Cup — and they host Newcastle in the fourth round on Saturday.

Last season, they led Manchester United at Old Trafford in the FA Cup quarter-finals and were again dreaming of Wembley until a mad spell saw Silva, Willian and Aleksandar Mitrovic all sent off and they ultimately crashed out.

And there were also key moments across the 180 minutes of this semi-final tie with Liverpool which Fulham players might come to replay in their heads.

Fulham came into last night's fixture chasing the tie and spent most of the evening chasing shadows, but they did have their chances.

Joao Palhinha's early volley over the bar was a poor miss and Andreas Pereira hit the post with an unguarded goal gaping in the second half.

"My players gave everything but we were not ruthless enough," Silva said.

While Fulham squandered this shot a winning major silverware for the first time, there is no doubting they are heading in the right direction. With Silva in charge, there is hope.

Chris Sutton seriously unimpressed with 'useless' Fulham player in Liverpool defeat
Pundit Chris Sutton has criticised Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno after the Whites fell to a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Marco Silva's side had to overturn a first-leg deficit but Luis Diaz made sure they made a mountain to climb in the early minutes of the game.

Speaking on the Football Daily Podcast, Chris Sutton has called out the German international for his role in Fulham's 1-1 draw on Wednesday night.

Liverpool are the best side in the country right now, but on each occasion the two sides have met this season, Fulham have run them incredibly close.

It took four of the best goals scored in the Premier League this season to defeat Silva's side in their first meeting.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first leg, Leno was only beaten by a heavily deflected Curtis Jones strike before Cody Gakpo immediately scored the winner.

Sutton wasn't impressed with Leno's attempts to keep out Liverpool star Luis Diaz's effort in the 11th minute.

Joao Palhinha had already missed a great chance for the hosts, but a poor attempt to clear a long ball by Timothy Castagne handed the Colombian his chance.

However, Sutton's criticism seems very harsh when taking a closer look at the goal.

Sutton not happy with Leno during Liverpool defeat
Speaking about Fulham's performance, Sutton said: "I think they were affected by some average goalkeeping, well useless goalkeeping and that's the truth.

"You can't do it at this level against a team who are seemingly growing in confidence, a team who have won so many trophies over the past however many years, you can't do it against a team like Liverpool and that was the deciding factor in the game, weak goalkeeping cost Fulham."

Leno did get a hand to Diaz's shot but Sutton's verdict on Liverpool's only goal of the game is harsh, to say the least.

His shot arrived by two deflections off Fulham defenders and at that point, Leno is simply hoping that the ball hits his hand and deflects away.

Unfortunately, it only tucks inside his near post and he more than made up for that with a fantastic stop to deny Darwin Nunez in the second half.

Harry Wilson and Issa Diop combined to give the Whites a way back into the game but unfortunately, it wasn't enough.

Fulham fans have witnessed some unbelievable performances from the German during his time at the club.

He's likely to drop out of the side for Saturday's match against Newcastle in the FA Cup.

Marek Rodak typically gets the nod in the early rounds of cup competitions and has performed admirably thus far.

Fulham cool interest in Jhon Cordoba

Fulham have reportedly been linked with the move for 30-year-old Colombian striker Jhon Cordoba this week.
A report from Football Transfers has claimed that Fulham have now cooled their interest in signing Jhon Cordoba, as they have decided to walk away from the move. The Cottagers were in talks with Krasnodar regarding a January transfer, and the move was expected to be completed soon.

Fulham Showed Interest in Jhon Cordoba
Fulham have abandoned their pursuit of the striker because they do not want to deal with Russian clubs following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. If they had signed the Colombian this month, they would have had a £7 million option to make the move permanent in the future.

It is no secret that the Londoners will have to bring in a quality goalscorer, and Cordoba had emerged as a viable target. Fulham have looked toothless in the attack recently, and they will need to bring in a reliable goalscorer to finish the season strongly. Cordoba has 15 goal contributions across all competitions this season, and he has been linked with Crystal Palace as well.

Fulham Need a Striker
They recently crashed out of the EFL Cup, and they will feel that they could have done more to book their place in the final. Despite doing quite well against Liverpool over the two legs of the semi-finals, they failed to put the ball in the back of the net, and Marco Silva will need to address that problem before the January window closes.

Fulham sanctioned the departure of Aleksandar Mitrovic in the summer, and they have not been able to replace him adequately. Raul Jimenez has done reasonably well with his overall play, but his output leaves a lot to be desired. The Mexican international has not been able to score goals consistently, and Fulham will need to bring in a reliable finisher. They have also been linked with Petar Musa.

Jhon Cordoba would have been attracted to the idea of competing in the Premier League with Fulham, and it would have been a major step up in his career. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the next few days. Fulham will probably have to move on to other targets now that they have made a decision on their pursuit of the Colombian.

'We were too emotional'- Marco Silva has his say on Fulham's EFL Cup semi-final exit to Liverpool
Marco Silva felt his Fulham players were too emotional at the start of the second leg of their 3-2 aggregate defeat against Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final.

Fulham drew the game 1-1 at Craven Cottage after a second-half Issa Diop goal cancelled out Luis Diaz' early strike on the night, but it was not enough to help Fulham to their first-ever League Cup final.

The Whites were left with a mountain to climb after just 11 minutes when Diaz got the better of Timothy Castagne and sent a deflected shot beyond Bernd Leno following their 2-1 loss at Anfield in the first leg.

"The first 30 minutes were difficult for us," said Silva.

"We were probably too emotional and more nervous than Liverpool, and we were not able to keep possession like we normally do – to make three or four passes between us. We lost many balls when we were building our attacks or when we could counterattack.

"We wanted to play better tonight than we did. In a semi-final, sometimes it is not easy to play good football or the football that you planned."

Joao Palhinha had already squandered a presentable chance from a corner before Diaz struck, and Andreas Pereira hit the post early in the second half as Fulham tried to pull off a comeback.

Diop's close-range finish on 76 minutes created a chaotic end to the contest, but Silva's side were not able to force the tie to extra time.

"We were not ruthless enough and Liverpool are in the final," said the Fulham boss. "The first time Liverpool were a little bit more dangerous, they scored.

"They were much calmer than us. For them it was just another game, for most of our players it is new to play semi-finals of this competition. I think the club is going to grow in these kind of moments.

"Any club that is not used to being at this stage is going to grow. For the players to develop and get more used to it, to not be so nervous and so emotional at the beginning of these type of games, comes with experience of these type of games.

"Of course, I want more. You know my ambition and the players do as well. What we have to do is to keep working really hard to keep growing as a football club."

'Quite complicated' – Despite concrete approach for Fulham player, transfer difficult to do
Earlier this week, we covered claims from the Dutch media which revealed Feyenoord's interest in Fulham player Kevin Mbabu.

The fullback is currently on a season long loan at Augsburg, and they'd need to agree to cut short his spell so he'd be free to move to the Netherlands.

As outlet 1908 today features an update on this situation, they explain it's difficult for Feyenoord to take Mbabu from Fulham.

They say even though there's been a 'concrete approach' for the signing, the negotiation is proving to be 'quite complicated' because Augsburg aren't keen on letting him go.

The German club want at least a 'light compensation' to cut short the spell, and by the way 1908 writes, Augsburg and Fulham won't be paying that.

Despite missing a couple of games because of injury, Mbabu has been a regular starter at the Bundesliga side, with 12 appearances this season so far, and it wouldn't make sense for the club to just let him go in the middle of the season.

So if Feyenoord really want the player, they better get in touch with Fulham in the summer. For the Premier League side, it makes little sense to pay any money for a simple loan swap, especially given Mbabu is being used.

Positives and negatives: Fulham 1-1 Liverpool

Don't be sad because it's over, people. Smile because it happened. Fulham bowed out of the Carabao Cup, all good things must come to an end but Cam won't look back in anger.

Positives

We will dream again

Conflicting emotions are present throughout this article because as this draw is effectively a defeat, a so close but yet so far scenario, I'm torn between what I should and shouldn't feel, however what we cannot discount or discredit is the gripping journey that led us to our first domestic semi-final in 22 years, and the wonder that grew at every single step along the way.

The anticipation heading into our all-or-nothing encounter with Liverpool evoked feelings that I personally haven't known since 2010's Europa League semi-final second-leg against Hamburg, a game that shaped my adoration of our beautiful football club and all that it traditionally stands for. We've had stomach churning finals at Wembley in Championship Play-offs, FA Cup quarter final controversy but there's something spectacular about nights under the lights and the grandest auditorium English football has to offer and Wednesday was no different. In fact, it was exceptional.

I couldn't care less if the flags were last-minute Happy Shopper specials, once everyone had safely entered the stadium all that the eye could see was a shimmering ocean of black and white, the Hammersmith End was on its feet and it remained so for the duration, Johnny-on-the-spot, and the noise that washed across the Cottage was deafening and constant. It wasn't meant to be, we'd been built-up for inevitable heartbreak but even in the pain of what could've been, I am still immensely proud of the boys that wear our famous jersey because they really do care about the betterment of our club, and what they've achieved under Marco's command in two-and-a-half years proves that we are indeed progressing.

Perhaps we could've turned the screw earlier than we did, maybe our squad depth simply wasn't skilled enough to carry us over the line but we have to have perspective here, and there are factors we also have to be conscious of. Liverpool are the country's in-form force, even without Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander Arnold et al. They're equipped with world-class superstars that have gone the distance in some of the planet's most taxing and testing competitions and we gave them a bloody good run for their money.

It wasn't a humiliation, it wasn't one-way traffic, Jurgen Klopp's table-toppers didn't have it all their own way and while our own football jumped between emphatic and pathetic over 180-plus minutes, while we could've capitalised on key opportunities in both legs, we went down swinging and against one of the deadliest teams on the planet, that is all we could've hoped for once the the teams were pulled out of the hat.

I won't remember this Carabao Cup campaign as a failure. Our imaginations ran wild, knock-out delirium was rife and by way of nail-biting penalty shoot-outs and stress-free victories over East Anglian challengers we were labelled contenders, one of four that could lay claim to silverware and though we couldn't slay the giant but we didn't suffer.

We have come a long, long way from early exit upsets on the outskirts of Gatwick airport. Clubs like Fulham simply aren't meant to rub shoulders with footballing royalty when trophies are up for grabs, we either fall flat on our faces or we dig our own graves, but this team of Marco Silva's is learning how to rattle cages, it isn't foolproof but it is evolving and if it continues to take me back to the boy I was 15 years ago, awestruck and astonished as my heroes wrote history and defied odds, then I am going to back this project no matter what because it is worth believing in. We will dream again.

Wilson's drive and determination

As soon as Bobby Decordova-Reid was replaced by Harry Wilson, Fulham slipped out of neutral and the wheels were set in motion. The Welsh winger's flitted in and out of Silva's starting selection this season, it's thought he's much more effective off the bench and on Wednesday evening, that particular opinion was fully validated.

Against his boyhood club, Wilson hit the turf with a purpose, with next to no time at all to influence things he made his introduction count, and his intent along the left was instantly appreciated. Jetting along the touch line, Wilson approached the by-line and in stealth bomber style, he screeched inside Conor Bradley and pressed the little red button. He manoeuvred into clear space, his cross ricocheted into the danger zone and that is how we fired ourselves back into contention, through drive and determination.

We could've done with Wilson's incision from the off, never mind from the dugout. He was direct in possession, supportive off the ball and with fresh legs, he didn't stop for anything. There's something extra about Harry, he may not impress on every outing but there's an edge to him, an energy that's so unique and for 25 minutes or so we saw it in full flow, and it couldn't have been more needed.

Up top Diop

Who wouldn't thought they man we really needed up top was Issa Diop, the man who sounded a spirited yet futile fight back from the Whites. If our recognised strikers can't tuck it away, our marauding centre-back certainly can and as Diop charged onto Wilson's deflected cross, he readjusted his posture to divert the equaliser. The improvisation of a proper No.9, exacted by a defender prone to self-inflicted calamity.

To even have the inclination to bomb forward is bold, it's gutsy, and possibly a bit stupid, but given his result-defining mistake at Stamford Bridge, it is his atonement and it was received well by all in attendance of a Fulham persuasion. Issa wanted to force the issue, to change the narrative and even if his leveller stood for nothing come the final whistle, he was committed to the task at hand at both ends of the park and that cannot be denied.

He studied Darwin Nunez's movement at the back and at nose bleed altitude in the opposing penalty area, he got in on the act with certainty and if Liverpool's Uruguayan gunman needs a few golden pointers, Diop's the guy with the unexpected poise the "poo Andy Carroll" has always longed for.

Negatives

Disadvantaged by nerves

It took 70-odd minutes for us to suddenly warm to proceedings but before that, as a collective, we were a nervous wreck and tensions were palpable. Nobody in black and white really wanted to show for the ball, particularly on the counter, and as soon as we retrieved possession, we gifted it straight back to Liverpool via panicked passes, heavy first touches and scrambled composure. We just couldn't make things stick, Andreas Pereira and Bobby Decordova-Reid were particularly thriftless with the ball and it's a mystery as to how they both remained in the pitch for as long as they did.

Balls came to feet and they'd instantly rid possession without design, they tend to be useful distributors but the magnitude of the occasion clearly got to them, but they weren't the only culprits. Antonee Robinson was troubled defensively, he chased shadows as Harvey Elliott periodically cut the USMNT left-back adrift and he was frequently overpowered whilst attempting to shield possession. In the same breath, Raul Jimenez was ineffective up top, too.

He couldn't wait to move possession on with no thought or concept, he was held on a tight leash by a scrawny teenager and for a striker of his size and stature, he was ridiculously easy to contain. Being subbed off for Rodrigo Muniz really isn't a good look, especially at the last chance saloon stage of the game and if that's to be the extent of our depth in the final third after January, we're in for some of the most tedious months we've probably ever encountered in the top-flight.

This wasn't supposed to be a finger pointing exercise, while we eventually retaliated the lads were visibly off it for the majority of the game and I guess with experience, if we're wanting to go even further in future tournaments – maybe even this season in the FA Cup – we have to cope with pressures and expectations better because teams like Liverpool do not wilt at the business end of major tournaments, they thrive and rarely falter.

It's unchartered territory for the lads, two-legged semi finals don't rock up at the Cottage every year like they seem to for the Reds but we now know what it takes to be there, and if there's a next time very, very soon, we'll be wise to channel nerves to our advantage, rather than to the opposite effect which ultimately stung our hopes of jumping the final hurdle at home.

One lapse seals fate

The sequence that led to the tie's defining goal, the first of the evening, is not for the faint hearted. Liverpool took full advantage of unperceptive ball and an uncharacteristically limp wrist and what's more damning is that from that moment onward, the Whites actually defended commendably to limit the visitors. One lapse at the back sealed our fate and it furthers the cruel reality that a date with destiny under the world famous arch in HA9 simply wasn't to be for the Whites.

I have no idea how Luis Diaz managed to chest the ball down above Timothy Castagne's ahead but our Belgian right-back barely left the ground as the Colombian winger soared, it's almost as though he didn't notice Diaz whatsoever and as he back peddled, he obviously lost track of the ball and that spelled serious trouble. It was unsightly from Timothy, he wasn't aware of the risk of not contesting aerially and though Tosin attempted to block Diaz's shot, the ball squirmed towards the bottom left corner and Bernd Leno is also culpable.

Leno should've smothered that effort, it's a strike he'd usually deflect or claim without an issue but our German stopper was unresponsive. He plunged awkwardly to his right, he wasn't in control as he clawed at the ball and while his palm made contact, it wasn't solid enough to flick danger wide of the mark. If he'd have dealt with that, who knows what could've happened but that is what we've been reduced to, again. Empty could could've, as it was in the first leg. A comedy of errors, but there's nothing remotely funny about it and when we needed a pinch of good fortune, Lady Luck just wasn't on our side and Sky eventually got the final they were drooling over.

So Silva thinks our team will grow, does that mean he is happy to leave it unchanged and in particular give Jimenez more time to find a goal scoring touch. The team has been together for half a season now and there is no sign of us being able to score goals freely. Take away those two 5-0 wins and our scoring record is dismal. In particular visiting teams know they are in with a good chance of a clean sheet or at the worst a single goal against them.

It would be appreciated if you could try being a little more constructive when being critical.
