I was looking at:

If you look at "Football Latest!" and click on "Transfer Centre!" a window pops up:

The left hand side shows acquisitions and the right hand side shows departures for each club in the Premier League. This time there's a really large number of loan deals (particularly conspicuous on the right hand side). Looks like silly-money deals aren't so common despite the activities involving Torres & co.
There is still relatively little liquidity in the economy at the moment so no-one has cash, and if you do, you are keeping it.
The only major deal involved a Russian oligarch embezzling his dirty money, allegedly, through his football club. This in turn allowed Liverpool to get what they needed and pay in cash.
Take out Chelsea and Liverpool buying an injured player and Bent to Villa. Then it actually makes more sense.
I heard a stat today that in this window £100m went abroad,£100m was shared between prem clubs and to the championship and below went the massive sum of £5M.
