My favorite bass player is Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead for the variety in his playing.
My favorite bass player to look at is Tal Wilkenfeld -- check her out playing with Jeff Beck:

All great bassist listed from this post thread.... no complaints about any of them

I'm fond of John Entwhistle -- it's not often you hear a bass solo in a rock 'n roll song. Here's a classic:
The Who - My Generation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=594WLzzb3JI#noexternalembed)
My favourite player out of Notting Hill was Alan Mullery. Although he didn't play the bass he drunk plenty of it
jaco
nothing comes close
Blingo has started learning to play the Bass aswell.
Guess that makes VB and me a pair of old slappers lol lol lol
my top bass player is Chris Squire, closely followed by Stanley Clark.
Here's 3 base players playing together, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten ...
WOW! Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrav_MSMjNs#)

Philip Parris Lynott (1949 - 1988) RIP

I hope your better on guitar than you are in goal VB :011:
Gordon Sumner
Alex James
John Entwistle
John Paul Jones
Jack Bruce
Jaco Pastorius
Donald "Duck" Dunn
Chuck Rainey
...The Ox...
My favorite live bass moment was when I saw Jaco Pastorius, when he was with Weather Report, play Purple Haze as a bass duet ... with himself.
He had 2 speakers facing each other. He played the bass riff (octaves?) that starts the song, then set the bass between the speakers so it continued in a loop. Then he picked up a second bass and played Purple Haze. Un-frickin-believable.
Norman Watt-Roy from the Blockheads
Paul Chambers.
Ron Carter.
Danny Thompson
For me, it has to be Skynyrd's Leon Wilkeson on some memorable live performances of Free Bird. Ed King did the honours on the original studio recording, but it doesn't touch the drive of LW's live play which still does it for me all these years later. :HD:
...just think - what amazing sounds Von Billy could get out of his axe if he had inherited the extra fingers.. :dft012:
