Find it nearly impossible to get excited and watch England play. Granted, the team is knackered & the tournament is nothing but glorified friendlies, however, this turgid football with what is a world class squad is nothing short of an embarrassment and for me a sign of incompetence. Southgate, like Parker, is sucking out all the individual quality in most of these players. Only the grace of god can give us a chance of winning anything while he is in charge.

Naturally the question is if not Southgate, then who? I don't really have an answer to that. Seen some people throw Graham Potter's name out there which I personally find a bit ridiculous. The geezer has had 1.5 good seasons with Brighton and people want him to manage the national team already. Of course, for all I know it could be a great appointment after all but on paper right now it seems far too early.

I really don't care whether the manager is english. Just want someone who can actually win us stuff and play some semi exciting stuff.

I've had exactly the same thoughts for a while now. We have unbelievable array of talent but somehow Southgate manages to stifle the life out of them with his style of play and tactics. He is a very cautious manager and I fear with him at the helm this group of players will fail to win a tournament. The FA will obviously stick with Southgate with a World Cup around the corner, so we will endure more of his dull, uninspiring brand of football for a while longer.

I think englkand have had an amazing run of good fortune and against a proper team we saw that we do not have the imagination to do better.

Germany played as a team, too often we played as group of individuals. the defence is really not all that and decent opposition with proper strikers will have a field day.

Southgate has been brilliant in boinding the players together as a proper squad, what we need now is a master tactician either to help. If we get to the semis in the world cup as a minimum then that will be brilliant but i do not see it happening. The squad does not have a proper deep lying playmaker that can pick the right passs at the right time and the 'game changers' either sit on the bench way too long OR should start.

Southgate has done well to turn england round, of that there is no doubt. But we now need to progress and we need a more creative eye.

Sorry for the ramble.

Yes. Phillips and Rice are too similar on the menu, one has to go. I would have liked to see Ward-Prowse or Gallagher given a run out.  I thought Kane was offside for the penalty.

Craven Mad

Yep, it's horrendously boring watching England these days. I don't know how a team with such a bounty of attacking flair can play such mindless football.

Grealish is the only one who breaks the mould when he plays and, low and behold, things are always more exciting when he's on the pitch.

Agree with the comments but I would say he's proven himself to be a decent tournament manager.
Look at all the failed tournaments over the years with squads who should have done so much better. He's done better than anyone in terms of progression to the later stages since 1966.
For that alone, he's worth sticking with until he fails to reach semi finals. Then I see no point in keeping him for all the reasons mentioned.

Not sure it can be said we have the sort players available that can change games. We are very pedestrian with a coach that has a team that reflects him very well. Very dull and pedestrian. But I would prefer to watch a Womens International than England Men at the moment. At least there is a belief from the supporter that the team are not just going through the motions.

But then much of International football is pretty pointless anyway. So many games and so many pointless performances.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

It was not only a boring game to watch but it felt odd trying to follow the team in blue when it was the opposition that was in black and white.

Much smarter, obviously.

Strangely, it is looking more and more likely that Kane is going utterly smash the top goalscorer in England record and yet never win a single trophy.

It was Southgate who lost the game for England in the final against Italy. They made a change in midfield after HT, took control of the game, scored and won. Southgate did not do anything, just a deer in then headlights. (Lets not talk about the Saka penalty decision ...). He is in the job because he is politically correct, not because he is a good in game management.

It's interesting because I think there's certainly an image from people I know who don't follow football so much but the common comments are always, 'holds himself well' 'says all the right things' 'he's the kind of manager you can look up to and respect'. I think, not to get political, but there's a direct comparison to the image of the President of US say. Over the years, a lot of it is about appearance than substance.

I'd personally give Graham Potter the job. Someone who can make changes, better young players and has some attacking intent. Seeing this squad of talented young players with at times, a bank of 7 with 5 defenders and two holding midfielders is painful.

Southgate has an armoury of skilful attacking players, could you imagine how the team would play under the leadership of a Klopp or Guardiola.

Whilst Southgate is in charge he will always set up teams with defence the main priority.

Radiowhite

Thought the exact same whilst watching last night.
Unimaginative, boring, backwards football

Looking back it it hard to find exciting England managers, Bobby Robson was possibly the best. Looking forward is not going to be much better as I suspect if we look far enough we will see Parker there after he has done his stint at Spurs.

Free Elvis Hammond

He's stuck in mid-2000s football, just like Parker. Unadventurous full backs, two defensive midfielders, slow build-up...

Hardly any top-flight sides play like that any more

itombomb

I actually think he might be worse than Parker as an actual football coach, who at least got his teams to play with disciplined shape. The way England's defence has been all over the place the last few games is bewildering.

He's achieved a lot to improve the culture of the squad, with players who clearly enjoy and want to play for England (which wasn't the case 10/20 years ago), and that is actually a very positive thing. But when it comes to the on the pitch stuff he and his team are tactically inept.

I'm Australian (we needed a late goal to beat UAE in Qatar and now play Peru next week in a do or die game) - but I agree with you.  Ward-Prowse offers something different, not only on set pieces, whilst Gallagher adds a level of dynamism and a scoring threat with his late runs in to the box the others simply don't have

Typical response from most on here.  It's the national hobby - knock the England team's performances, knock the manager's tactics, team selection etc.

Managing a team which only meets up occasionally is a different animal from being a manager at club level.  I think Southgate is as good a manager as any we've ever had and I've been following the England team since 1959.

MartyFFC

Absolutely. I see even Gary 'Jugs' Lineker has waded into the argument on social media, saying how much better we are when we actually try and attack. Southgate is literally a mirror-image of Parker, though not as well-dressed

Couldn't disagree more. Care very little for international football but rarely do I enjoy watching this team under Southgate considering the wealth of young attacking players we have only typified by squad selections that included what, 4-5 right backs wasn't it?
