How does Financial Fair Play actually work?

How does Financial Fair Play (FFP) actually work? And why do some leagues and organisations have different rules? On the latest episode of The Athletic Football Podcast, Mark Chapman is joined by Matt Slater and Dan Sheldon to explain...

FFP is hugely unfair, it's unbelievable that Chelsea can spend £600m in one year and are now lining up Neymar as their next signing. Also Forest spending well beyond their means.

There is definitely some creative finances to get around it but still makes FFP a joke in my humble opinion.

The clue is in the 8 year contracts.
That allows them to amortise the fee over the 8 year period - simples
Over recent years player contracts have been getting longer.
Not for their personal welfare, but because it allows the transfer fee to be spread over more years
So £600m divided by 3 is £200m pa
Divided by 8, it is only £75m
My, how the cost has gone down  :005:
It could be better, but it's not a fantasy:

They may be on 8 year contracts but there wages still have to be paid every week
Most of there new signings will be on 80 to 120 grand a week .

yes, but the wages are peanuts compared to the transfer fees. The wages are still really high, but they are just really way smaller than the fees.

I thought that people stopped saying this back in mid 2000's.

£200k a week wages still makes over £10m a season.

Neymar would likely pour oil on already troubled waters.
