I was down near the front, exactly in line with the event. wow, what memories.

I didn't start going to matches until after the World Cup so It would have been the following season. I do remember the muddy pitches and, the heavy balls. The game seemed slower then and the long ball most of the time was amazing. I'm sure the game will evolve as much again in the next 56 years. There was no Bias from Keneth wolstenholme either. The crowd were all crushed in but I don't think there was too much trouble. It was pay on the gate as well

My Dad used to slip the turnstile operator a few pence and hoist me over the turnstile. Those were the days.

Watching it, I forgot how good Boibby Robson was.

He had so much time spare on the ball

I will be as good as I can be and when I cross the finishing line I will see what it got me

I must of been standing near you. I remember being near to the altercation. Thought Liverpool got away with a lot of fierce challenges.  The muddy conditions certainly caused a few problems in controlling the ball. Just goes to show how good Haynes Robson Leggat Earle Cohen Barratt et al were even though we were bottom of the league at the time. Strange I never thought too much of Pearson at the time but other than the incident with St.John he played quite well. What would VAR have made of that match? 092.gif

We didn't need it then and we don't need it now. It causes more problems than it solves

VAR would probably still be checking it over.

That was really interesting to watch. That field was horrible! Two questions:

1. When did keepers start wearing gloves?

2. When did yellow and red cards start being used?

George Cohen looked really good!

Another question- when did people stop wearing ties to matches?

I know we like to look back at our youth and youthful heroes with fondness and nostalgia and I know this won't be a popular post on here - but the reality is that the game back then was incredibly primitive and unstructured compared to today - clearly partly down to the poorer pitches and balls,  but watching that game through modern eyes, that was difficult viewing - players looked far less athletic, passing was aimless and passing sequences virtually non existent, all long balls and playing into channels. Although there is much to despise about todays football industry - the game itself is far superior both technically and tactically

Clearly non of this affected our enjoyment at the time because you don't always know what good looks like until you see it, and we didn't see it very often back then- we also enjoyed TV back then too - but like with football - you sometimes have to revisit the past to see how things have progressed

And when did half way line flags stopped being used? I'd forgotten all about them!
