Palhinha will need support of Fulham fans, says Silva
Marco Silva says Joao Palhinha will need the support of the Fulham fans after the Portuguese midfielder missed out on a move to Bayern Munich yesterday.

The Fulham head coach revealed that the former Sporting Lisbon man was not in the right frame of mind to play at the Etihad this afternoon having completed a medical in Munich and filmed his announcement video at Bayern Munich's stadium – only for the transfer to fall through.

Silva told his post-match press conference after Fulham's defeat at Manchester City this afternoon:

"It was a tough day for him, definitely, probably one of the toughest days of his life. He loves Fulham, he loves football, he loves to be with us. He had the fantastic season last season and he's always a player that gives 100 per cent for the shirt but he had a big chance to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world and he was really close.

You can imagine the impact that has on a football player when these type of things happen. He is going to need support from all of us – the coaching staff, our fans and his team-mates."

Michael Oliver would have ruled out Nathan Ake's goal for Man City against Fulham if he had been sent to his screen, says Mail Sport's refereeing expert CHRIS FOY

Manchester City beat Fulham 5-1 in their Premier League clash on Saturday
Nathan Ake scored a header while Manuel Akanji stood in an off-side position
Former Referee Chris Foy explains why he would have disallowed the goal

Man City were awarded a goal in their 5-1 win over Fulham on Saturday despite some calling for it to be ruled out for off-side.

Nathan Ake headed home his side's second goal on the stroke of half-time, while Manuel Akanji jumped towards the ball from an offside position.

Akanji did not touch the ball, but may have affected Fulham keeper Bernd Leno's ability to save the shot as he was stood directly in front of the German stopper.

It came at a crucial point in the game, with City taking the momentum at a time when the game was fairly even.

Mail Sport's CHRIS FOY, an ex-Premier League referee and PGMOL representative, explains how the decision was made, and what should have happened.

Nathan Ake's goal against Fulham on Saturday came while Manuel Akanji stood in front of keeper Bernd Leno in an off-side position

Manchester City's Nathan Ake heads the ball towards the Fulham goal where his team-mate Manuel Akanji, who is standing in an offside position, jumps and the ball goes in, beating keeper Bernd Leno.

Akanji does not make contact with the ball and, as we know, being in an offside position by itself is not an offence. So Tony Harrington, who was on VAR duty, will have looked at the goal and had to decide if Akanji became involved in active play. If he was, then because he was in an offside position he should have been penalised.

The VAR felt Akanji did not directly impact the keeper as he dives across his line, because he does not obstruct the Fulham player's line of vision. And because it's a subjective call, he decided not to recommend a review to the on-field referee, Michael Oliver.

Had Michael been advised to go to the screen I am fairly confident he would have disallowed the goal for offside, which I think would have been the fair decision.

Haaland: 'It was offside'
Manchester City's hat-trick hero Erling Haaland agreed with Marco Silva that the hosts' crucial second goal in their 5-1 win over Fulham should have been disallowed.

The Norwegian scored a second half hat-trick as the treble winners romped to their fourth win from four league games but admitted that Nathan Ake's header – which made 2-1 on the stroke of half-time – should not have stood because City centre back Manuel Akanji was obstructing the view of Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno in an offside position. Referee Michael Oliver awarded the goal on the field and, after a lengthy VAR check, the decision stood much to Fulham's anger.

Speaking to beIN Sports' Andy Kerry after the final whistle, Haaland admitted his side had been very fortunate:

"It was offside. I feel bad for them – I would be fuming after this as well. It must be a horrible feeling."

Knockaert signs for Valenciennes
Fulham winger Anthony Knockaert has joined French Ligue 2 side Valencinenes on a one-year contract.

The French winger has returned to his homeland on a permanent basis ending a largely forgettable three year spell at Craven Cottage. The 28 year-old joined Fulham on an initial season-long loan from Brighton and Hove Albion and scored seven goals in 39 appearances in all competitions as Scott Parker's side were promoted from the Championship via the play-offs. The terms of that loan deal meant his move became permanent – for a rumoured fee of £15m – in the summer but Knockaert struggled to make an impact thereafter.

He only played seventeen more games for Fulham in three further campaigns and spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town. The 31 year-old winger, who had less than a year remaining on his Fulham deal, has put pen to paper on a one-year deal with Valenciennes, who have the option to extend Knockaert's deal by a further twelve months.

Marco Silva claims Joao Palhinha had 'one of the toughest days of his life' after the Fulham star's move to Bayern Munich collapsed on deadline day

Joao Palhinha had been on a verge of a deadline day transfer to Bayern Munich
The midfielder's move collapsed when Fulham could not secure a replacement
Fulham head coach Marco Silva has been sympathetic to Palhinha's situation

Fulham boss Marco Silva has claimed Joao Palhinha will need the support of fans and team-mates after seeing a dream move to German champions Bayern Munich collapse on deadline day.

Palhinha had been pictured in Munich in anticipation of his transfer being completed before the deadline on Friday.

The midfielder had been seen arriving at Bayern Munich alongside a shirt ahead of a photoshoot.

Palhinha's move had been set to go through on the condition that Fulham had found a suitable replacement, but the Cottagers were unable to secure one.

This led to the transfer, which would have been Fulham's record sale of up to £70m, collapsing due to the German transfer deadline passing.

Marco Silva admitted Palhinha had endured 'one of the toughest days of his life' on Friday

Palhinha was left out of Fulham's squad for their 4-1 loss to Man City on Saturday.

Silva admitted the midfielder had endured a 'tough day' after seeing a move to 'one of the biggest clubs in the world' fall through.

'It was a tough day for him, definitely, probably one of the toughest days of his life,' Silva said, as reported by the BBC.

'He loves Fulham, he loves football, he loves to be with us.

'He had the fantastic season last season and he's always a player that gives 100% for the shirt but he had a big chance to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world and he was really close.

'You can imagine the impact that has on a football player when these type of things happen.

'He is going to need support from all of us – the coaching staff, our fans and his team-mates.'

Bayern Munich's interest in Palhinha had followed the midfielder starring for Fulham in his debut season at the club.

Palhinha has been a crucial part of the Fulham team since joining the club last summer

Palhinha made 35 appearances in the Premier League last season, with his display's crucial to helping Silva's side exceeded expectations to finish tenth on their return to the top flight.

The Portuguese midfielder was initially priced at £90m by Fulham, as initial interest from West Ham came to replace Declan Rice.

Palhinha had previously been the subject of interest from Liverpool, but the Reds ultimately opted not to make an offer.

'What I'm told': Fabrizio Romano shares what happened when Fulham tried to sign Man United player on Friday

It was a busy deadline day for a number of clubs in the end but few could match the drama unfolding at Fulham.

The Cottagers spent all day looking for a new midfielder as Joao Palhinha waited in Munich to sign for Bayern. However, the deal collapsed when Fulham couldn't a replacement for their star man.

One man who Fulham did apparently try for was Manchester United's Scott McTominay. But according to Fabrizio Romano, things never got going.

Scott McTominay decided not to join Fulham from Manchester United
According to Fabrizio Romano, McTominay was indeed a target for Fulham and they did indeed speak to him.

However, Romano has said that things never progressed, quite simply because McTominay didn't want to move to Craven Cottage.

"From what I'm told, Fulham also spoke to the Manchester United midfielder, but he said no to Fulham. So what happened is that the Palhinha deal collapsed because Fulham couldn't find a replacement," Romano said in his latest daily briefing for CaughtOffside.

McTominay remained at Old Trafford after the deadline passed and must now wait and see if he plays any part this season. With United signing Sofyan Amrabat though, his place in the squad is looking on even rockier ground.

Fulham deadline day nightmare
The window in general wasn't great for Fulham really. While they did manage to sign Alex Iwobi late in the day, they lost their top talisman in Aleksandr Mitrovic.

To compound things, Marco Silva's side were then hammered at Manchester City yesterday and it looks like being a tough old season for them.

With McTominay, it will now be interesting to see how things pan out. It's clear Erik ten Hag would have let him leave but now he's stuck and could end up spending another season drifting.

Erling Haaland gave an extremely honest assessment of Manchester City's controversial second goal against Fulham.

Haaland scored a stunning hat-trick as Man City smashed Fulham 5-1 at the Etihad on Saturday to secure three league points.

Julian Alvarez's opened the scoring in the 31st minute as the visitors wasted no time in responding, with Tim Ream levelling just two minutes later.

But the Blues regained their lead when Nathan Ake headed home just before the break. But the goal was clouded by controversy due to Manuel Akanji appearing to be in an offside position.

The decision to allow Ake's goal to stand infuriated Marco Silva, with Haaland sympathising with the Fulham boss following the result.

Asked about the second goal, the Norwegian phenom said: "I think it was offside as well, I feel bad for them. I would be fuming if I was them..."

Haaland's candid and frank assessment of his side's second goal against Fulham justifies Silva's anger towards the controversial decision.

Speaking after his team's crushing defeat, the Portuguese gaffer said: "That moment made a huge impact. Everyone that plays football, has some knowledge about football, are 100% sure they have to disallow that. It's impossible to not.

"It's a clear offside, it concerns us how that goal was not disallowed."

He added: "The more you times you see that moment, the more sure you are to disallow it.

"Our players saw it, everyone on the pitch at that moment has the same opinion..."

It proved to be a turning point in the game as Man City fired three goals without reply in the second-half.

Haaland made it 3-1 in the 58th minute. He then bagged his second goal of the match when he converted a penalty before completing his hat-trick in stoppage time.

Man City remain perfect in the Premier League, having won their opening four games and, at this early stage, their star man is the league's top scorer, with six goals to the player's name.

Needless to say, the decision to allow the goal to stand sent social media wild as fans online made their feelings known.

One X user wrote: "He stands right in front of the GK blocking the view + he makes a jump and a leg move when the ball gets to him, so of course that was offside."

A second wrote: "He's in front of the goalie. It's an Offside."

A third added: "It is as clear as daylight! He moves his leg to catch the ball, which affects Leno's decision! Again referees spoiling the beautiful game!"

A fourth fumed: "Worst call this season. Clear offside, by every metric."

An Arsenal supporter commented: "Clear offside. If it's in the Emirates, would have been offside without VAR check and Arteta would've been booked."

Only honest after the event, don't see him protesting too much when the goal was awarded along with the rest of Man City. Bunch of hypocrites.

What would that achieve, the goal was given they would not change that.
Do you think that our players would have done that, of course not.

I just hope all above is true and plays out.  JP needs to be a "professional" and finish his time playing in a FFC shirt full out, as we are all accustomed.
