Silva: Pereira is still part of my plans
Marco Silva has insisted that Andreas Pereira remains part of his plans at Fulham – despite leaving him out for this afternoon's draw at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Brazilian international angrily claimed on Instagram that an interview he gave to Premier League Brasil earlier this week had been mistranslated maliciously – with quotes appearing to suggest that he saw his future away from Craven Cottage. Speaking after the 1-1 draw at Spurs, Silva said that the midfielder wasn't dropped because of that interview but as a tactical ploy for the London derby.

Silva said:

"I didn't read the interview. I know some of the topics of the interview. I didn't read the interview because for me to read something from my players I need to be sure that they did it. I didn't read it but I know what you are talking about. The thing that I want to tell you is that Andreas is going to be back stronger and is going to be with us to help the team like he has been.

He's going to be the important player that he's been since he our joined the football club. It's nothing related to the interview. I don't make decisions (based) on interviews. My decisions are never going to be related to newspapers or something. My decisions come from a daily basis with the players, (training) sessions, games and nothing more."

Silva suggested that Pereira could be back in Fulham's starting line-up as soon as Thursday, when the Whites will face Brighton and Hove Albion without the suspended Sasa Lukic and Tom Cairney.

"Let's hope we can have Andreas ready again next week in the way I know he can play. We need everybody in this moment of the season."

Why Andreas Pereira was left out of Fulham squad for Tottenham clash
Marco Silva insists omission not related to recent interview, the translation of which has been strongly criticised by Pereira

Marco Silva has explained why he left Andreas Pereira out of the Fulham squad for Sunday's 1-1 draw at Tottenham.

The Brazilian international had started all 12 of Fulham's Premier League games so far this season until being left out of the starting lineup and not named among the substitutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

His omission came in the wake of an interview Pereira gave to a Brazilian media outlet in which he appeared to describe it as "unfortunate" that a move to Marseille broke down in the summer and was reported to have said "let's see what will happen in January".

Shortly before kick-off between Fulham and Tottenham on Sunday, Pereira posted a strong statement on social media, claiming that his words had been "maliciously distorted" and "inaccurately" translated from Portuguese into English.

Pereira insisted that, in the interview, he had "expressed my happiness and satisfaction with being at Fulham." Silva was asked after the match as to whether Pereira's interview was the reason he had been left out.

"No, not at all," Silva replied. "I didn't read the interview. I know some of the topics in the interview. I didn't read the interview. For me, to read something from my players, I have to be sure that they did [say] it.

"I know what you are talking about. I want to tell you that Andreas is going to be back stronger to help the team like he's been helping every single moment. He's going to be the important player he's been since he joined our football club. Nothing related to the interview."

Silva added: "[It was] not to protect him at all. I don't make decisions regarding interviews. I don't follow social media; I don't read newspapers.

"Decisions from myself come from the daily basis with my players. Nothing more. He was not ready for the game today."

Silva, when asked whether Pereira was injured, replied: "No. It was during the week; it was a technical decision from myself."

Premier League issues statement amid controversial tackle in Tottenham vs Fulham
Only in the Premier League can a team go from defeating Manchester City at the Etihad to settling for a draw at home against Fulham. That team, of course, is Tottenham. The result keeps Spurs within striking distance of the top four, trailing Brighton by three points and sitting five behind Chelsea and Arsenal. Things took a more serious turn as the Premier League issued a statement regarding Tom Cairney's late red card against Spurs. The Fulham midfielder had earlier scored a stunning equaliser before being sent off in the dying moments of the match.

Tottenham had worked their way into a strong position to move up to sixth after Brennan Johnson's opener in North London. However, Cairney's stunning equaliser brought Fulham level with 25 minutes remaining. Cairney's heroics quickly turned to frustration, though, as VAR officials Craig Pawson and Ian Hussin recommended that referee Darren Bond reassess his decision to issue just a yellow card. The Premier League Match Centre's X account later clarified the reasoning behind the review process.

Horror tackle made on Kulusevski
The Premier League deemed Tom Cairney's tackle on Dejan Kulusevski as 'serious foul play' after Tottenham were granted a late opportunity to secure a winner against Fulham on Sunday. Although initially shown a yellow card by referee Darren Bond, Cairney was sent off after a VAR review.

His challenge, a late attempt to win the ball, saw Cairney's studs rake down Kulusevski's right Achilles, forcing the Tottenham winger to be substituted moments later. Timo Werner replaced Kulusevski, but was unable to influence the match as it ended in a draw.

The Premier League match centre shed light on the matter issuing statement in their x account,
"The referee's call of yellow card for the challenge by Cairney on Kulusevski is checked by VAR, who recommended an on-field for serious foul play," it says. "The referee then issued a red card to Cairney."

Positives and Negatives: Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Fulham

Jack Stroudley looks back at our point on the road in North London.

Fulham started December and a tricky run of fixtures with a solid point on the road away at Tottenham. It felt like one of those days until Tom Cairney slotted in the leveller with a little more than 20 minutes to go. That, followed by a resolute defensive performance to see the game out, ensured we'd return to SW6 with a deserved point, but what are the talking points from the game?

Positives

Bounced back well

Following last weekend's result at home to Wolves, today felt like we needed to make amends going into a tough run and we did just that. Bossing Spurs for periods of the game and having chance after chance which on another day go in. Our transition was magnificent with quick, intricate and precise passing alongside slick and technical dribbling – we had Spurs on the ropes for large portions of the match.

When Brennan Johnson scored it felt like one of those days but we continued to stick to our guns and were rewarded by a scintillating strike. After the red card, we showed magnificent game management to run the clock down, frustrate Spurs and ultimately limit the number of chances they could create. The performance was a reminder of our quality and just how good we can be, last weekend was just a slight bump in the road.

Subs paid off

Now obviously it isn't ideal that one of said subs got sent off (I'll get onto that later) but he did also score! The remainder of the subs I thought were fantastic in North London. Harry Wilson was his usual dazzling self with darting run after darting run and caused a disjointed Spurs defence lots of problems. Rodrigo Muniz did exactly what he needed to (even more so when we went down to ten) and held the ball up well, drew fouls and slowed the game down.

Seeing Sess back for Fulham in the Premier League was quite a moment but he and Castagne both did their jobs when coming on late in the day (that moment at the end when Sess tapped the badge and clapped the fans could be hung in the Louvre). Fulham have smartly built a squad over the last few windows and we're now reaping the rewards of that.

Negatives

Oh captain, my captain

Look, it was obviously accidental, you can see Tom Cairney visibly tell the referee he didn't mean to do it, but ultimately he did and had to be sent off. A nasty challenge which as a result sees TC suspended leaving us with a big midfield dilemma for Brighton.

Sasa Lukic's yellow card also means he will be suspended for Thursday nights fixture, add TC, Reed and the exile of Andreas Pereira and we are down to our bare bones. That being said Fulham do have quality in depth and players who can play numerous positions. As a result of this I can see Iwobi dropping into midfield alongside Berge and Smith-Rowe with Wilson getting a much deserved start. A bit of a dampener on an enjoyable trip down the Seven Sisters Road.

Quote from: WhiteJC on December 02, 2024, 08:43:30 AM'Could have broken his leg' – Tom Cairney goes from hero to zero as Fulham skipper sent off for horrendous tackle
Tom Cairney rescued a point for Fulham at Tottenham before being sent off for a horror tackle on Dejan Kulusevski.

The Cottagers skipper had an eventful 20-minute cameo off the bench as Marco Silva's side escaped with a 1-1 draw in north London.

Cairney was introduced off the bench in the 62nd minute with Fulham trailing following Brennan Johnson's opener.

And just five minutes later, he hauled the visitors level with a beautiful curling strike into the bottom right corner.

It was his first goal away from home since March 2010 during his time spell at Hull.

But he soon went from hero to zero after being given his marching orders in the 82nd minute.

The 33-year-old was initially given a yellow card by referee Darren Bond for a challenge on Kulusevski.

But he was then instructed to go to the pitchside monitor by VAR where replays showed Cairney's studs-up lunge into the back of the Sweden international's calf.

And Bond was given no chance but to upgrade his initial booking to a straight red for serious foul play.

Commenting on the tackle on talkSPORT commentary, Sam Ellard simply said: "That could have broken his leg."

Meanwhile the Premier League Match Centre's X account posted: "The referee's call of yellow card for the challenge by Cairney on Kulusevski is checked by VAR, who recommended an on-field review for serious foul play.

"The referee then issued a red card to Cairney."

Cairney will now miss the next three games for Fulham.

He will now be absent for Thursday's clash with Brighton at Craven Cottage.

And he will then be unavailable for next Sunday's clash with Arsenal in west London and then the trip to Liverpool on December 14.

Thankfully for Fulham, Spurs didn't make them pay for having a man less as they shared the spoil at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The result leaves Spurs in seventh spot - three points off the top four.

As for Fulham, they remain in tenth spot - just one point behind Ange Postecoglou's men.

What a ridiculous statement. That tackle was never a leg breaker for several reasons. First it was from behind on the calf so even if it was a standing leg it would have forced the knee forward leading the leg to collapse taking the energy out. While it was clumsy and no doubt painful he was not out of control or off the ground. Don't know who the person who made the comment was but in my opinion he doesn't know what he is talking about.

Some times you wonder where these people get their facts from and this one is a bit of an idiot. Firstly the tackle was not on Kulusevski's right Achilles, it was his right calf. Then Werner was already on the pitch and Kulusevski was not substituted and played the full match. When TC committed foul he was standing and why I am not denying it was a foul it was the not the nasty challenge this person says. TC was standing and it was clumsy tackle, red card or not I don't know but lets not get out of our prams and if you are going to have an opinion get you facts right.
