At least one more game for the interim head coach

Calum McFarlane will put his 100 per cent unbeaten record as Chelsea interim head coach to the test on Wednesday, with the news that he's set to remain in charge of the first-team (at least) until then.

As per reports, Liam Rosenior, the expected replacement for Enzo Maresca, was already in London on Monday, but has now flown back to Strasbourg, presumably to say his goodbyes and try to leave the club in decent order. He's still the only candidate in the frame as our next manager, so this is likely just a bit of formality. I don't imagine he'll be able to do or say anything to appease the angry fans of RC Strasbourg, but he might get credit for trying.

With McFarlane (and his staff) still in charge and busy with preparations for Wednesday's game against Fulham, it's not quite clear how the under-21s will deal with their PL International Cup match against Benfica on the same day.

Fulham have now made an approach to sign a "fantastic" midfielder, who has been impressing in the Europa League this season.

Cottagers keen to strengthen in the engine room
The Cottagers are looking to bring in a striker, central midfielder and right-winger this month, with Marco Silva recently insisting the uptick in form hasn't changed his plans, saying: "It's not because we won games and we are looking for a different position right now that we are changing ourselves,

"We look with full ambition for the season like we did before, and even if the results were not so good, we will not change completely the scenario because it's clear what we need."

Silva's side have been on a strong run in the Premier League, collecting 11 points from their last five matches, recently extending the unbeaten run to five games courtesy of Harrison Reed's last gasp equaliser against Liverpool.

Despite Reed's heroics, Fulham remain keen on signing a new central midfielder, and they have now made preliminary contact over a deal for Real Betis midfielder Sergi Altimara, with it being revealed the Spanish club could be willing to sanction a departure for the right price.

Indeed, according to a report from TEAMtalk, Betis have set an asking price of around £22m for Altimira, but the Cottagers are not alone in their pursuit, with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt also very keen on securing his signature.

Betis are in a strong negotiating position, with the midfielder tied down on a contract until 2029, which suggests the west Londoners may need to fork out the full asking price to tempt his current employers into a sale.

"Fantastic" Altimira impressing in Europa League
The 24-year-old has been an important player for Betis in the Europa League this season, featuring in all six games, and he was particularly impressive in the 3-1 win against Dinamo Zagreb last month, making three tackles and winning four duels to help keep the Croatian side at bay.

Lauded as "fantastic" by Spanish reporter Mateo Gonzalez last season, the Betis ace has strong defensive attributes, while he is also comfortable in possession of the ball, as showcased by his performance across some key statistics over the past year.

Man Utd set to approach second Premier League boss amid Oliver Glasner stand-off
Manchester United are looking around for their next head coach with Oliver Glasner among the names on the top of their list, but Fulham believe their boss Marco Silva is likely to be on their radar

Manchester United are on the lookout for their next boss and Fulham believe they could get a call for Marco Silva, who is among the names being linked with the vacancy.

He was linked to the United job before his fellow countryman Ruben Amorim took it in November 2024, but he was given his marching orders on Monday. His sacking means that Ineos are looking for the second new manager of their ownership.

Silva took the job at Fulham when they were in the Championship, leading them to the title before establishing them as a Premier League club once again. His work has impressed plenty of onlookers and he was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia back in the summer.

The Portuguese head coach, who will be out of contract in the summer, has yet to give a response to the offer of a three-and-a-half-year contract that was put to him by the Fulham hierarchy back in November. That has fuelled suggestions he will leave when the season ends.

It has not gone unnoticed that Silva is yet to commit his future to Fulham and the club are braced for an approach from those in Manchester - either in the summer or sooner, reports The Sun.

The 48-year-old has backed away from speaking publicly about his future or his next move, but has made it clear that remaining with Fulham is not purely about wages. He wants to see if the club will be able to match his ambition going forward after several years in the top flight.

Back in the summer, with Fulham struggling to get signings in, he admitted it was "not ideal" before claiming: "I didn't expect us to be this passive. I knew what I wanted and the plan was there but it hasn't happened. Right now we need to reinforce. In some positions we are very short. Did I expect it? Of course not, but the market is the market."

United's top target for their managerial vacancy is believed to be another London-based manager in Oliver Glasner. The Crystal Palace boss has exceed expectations at Selhurst Park, winning the FA Cup and the Community Shield, all whilst losing some of his top players.

The Austrian is also out of contract in the summer and he's been vocal about some of his frustrations with how the Eagles have gone about their business. Plenty expect him to move on and his situation means that United are primed to pounce.

Fulham transfer news: Cottagers eye a Brazilian midfielder shining with Galatasaray
Gabriel Sara is starring at Galatasaray and receiving enquiries from Fulham and other English clubs.

Since joining Galatasaray in 2024, Sara has been a Premier League target ever since he moved to Turkey. According to Trivela, the former Sao Paulo midfielder has been approached by English top-flight clubs during the current transfer window.

Fulham are one of the English sides interested in the 26-year-old – but not the only one. Even before the start of the season, in July last year, Sara was targeted by giants such as Manchester City and Manchester United.

Fulham make enquiry for Gabriel Sara
The Turkish giants paid €18m (£15.8m) to sign Sara from Norwich, where he shone for two seasons after leaving Sao Paulo.

Since then, the midfielder has lifted the Turkish Super Lig and Turkish Cup trophies in his first season at the club. His performances have seen Premier League eyes turn back towards the player.

When he was previously targeted by English clubs, Sara's high salary at Galatasaray, although not officially revealed, was a stumbling block: only the big clubs in the Big Six would be able to afford him.

Now, Premier League clubs have once again made enquiries about the player, with Fulham among those interested – the others were not revealed. Fulham's enquiry for Sara, however, has not yet translated into an official bid with figures.

The midfielder could be a direct replacement for a position that lost another Brazilian. Marco Silva's side said goodbye to Andreas Pereira at the start of the season in August, when the midfielder joined Palmeiras for €10m (£8.8m).

The London squad also includes two other Brazilians: striker Rodrigo Muniz, who has become a fan favourite, and winger Kevin, who swapped Shakhtar Donetsk for Fulham for €40m (£35.1m) also at the start of this campaign.

Premier League interest in Sara
The former Sao Paulo player played in English football, but never in the Premier League. He spent two years in the Championship with Norwich without achieving promotion to the top flight. In his final season, he came close, reaching the play-offs for promotion.

At Norwich, he made 96 appearances, scoring 21 goals and providing 17 assists – including a standout 2023-24 campaign with 25 goal contributions in 46 Championship matches.

Despite previous interest, the Manchester duo of City and United have not opened talks with Gabriel Sara during the current transfer window.

Sara held talks with other clubs during the last transfer window, but his high salary in Turkey made negotiations with "mid-table" clubs unfeasible, meaning any discussions did not progress at the time. Sara's contract at Galatasaray runs until 2029.

The ending to the game was a bit crazy. Going from the emotions of thinking we've lost it in the 94th minute, to then Reedy scoring that amazing goal in the 97th. The feeling after the game, everyone was delighted for Reedy. Obviously when your teammate scores a goal like that, everyone's buzzing for him. As a whole, I think we're happy with a point. Our first half performance was really good, I thought Liverpool were probably the better team in the second half, so in general I think the point was probably fair. So the feeling in the changing room afterwards was quite positive, to get a point against the reigning champions is always good, and keeps our unbeaten run going.

Is he in the best form of his life?

Yeah I feel really good at the minute. As an attacker it's always nice when your numbers are good, but I think even before the goals and assists started to flow about a month ago I felt my performances were good. I feel sharp, I feel fit at the minute, and I feel that when the team's playing well it definitely helps you as an individual as well. I mentioned before that our unbeaten run we're on at the minute is good, and I'm hoping we can continue that against Chelsea on Wednesday.

The understanding with Raúl Jiménez...

I think Raúl's been amazing all season. To be putting in the performances he has been, the amount of games, he plays for the national team as well so all the travel he has to do to get over there and back, he rarely misses a game, so to be doing that at his age now, contributing to the team as a striker, it's not only his goals but his assists as well. I feel I have a really good connection with him – I know when the ball goes up to him he fights for every ball, doesn't give the defenders that he's up against a moment to rest. I feel like the goals and assists from the last couple of weeks have just been a reward for all the hard work that he puts in for the team.

What Marco is doing to bring out his best football...

He always talks to me about playing with confidence – I think that's the big thing in football. It's very easy when you're scoring and assisting, your confidence is high, but in the moments where maybe the numbers aren't coming you have to remain confident and keep doing the things you would when you are scoring and assisting. So I think that's been a big part in the conversations that we've had, and I feel this season, the minutes I've played, the games I've played, I've got into a real nice rhythm now. Whether it's playing out wide, or I played a bit more inside in the [Liverpool] game, I feel that whatever role I play now, I'm confident in that, and as I mentioned before, it definitely helps when the players around you and the team are playing well – it's easier as an individual to perform.

Taking positives from the weekend into Chelsea...

I think we definitely have to take confidence from the last game. When you go against the defending champions, no matter what kind of moment in the season they're in, I think a point is always positive. We scored two goals. The run we've been on the last month or so, we're full of confidence. We know Chelsea are an amazing team, got fantastic players, but when we played them early on in the season we were really unlucky not to win that game – a couple of decisions went against us. We know that if we perform to the levels we did there, we had a good win against them last season [too], then there's no reason we can't put on another good performance and get the three points.

Club will continue to frustrate Fulham efforts – Determined to secure 'World Cup bonus'
Fulham are likely to face continued frustration in their efforts to sign PSV Eindhoven striker Ricardo Pepi.

That's according to journalist Mike Verweij, via Voetbal 4 U. He believe that PSV Eindhoven will hold onto their striker until the summer, seeking a 'World Cup bonus'.

Fulham have been chasing Pepi for some time and reports have indicated that they will be moving again in the January transfer window.

PSV, though, have no intention of selling. While Fulham have made it clear that they would be willing to pay a substantial fee for the striker, the Dutch side are yet to budge.

"PSV director Ernest Stewart reiterated that this week, stating the club found Fulham's €30m-plus bid 'not interesting.' He spoke firmly about the potential move and made it clear that the Dutch side weren't interested in selling.

Of course, money often talks and a bigger bid from Fulham could quickly change that stance. Verweij, though, believes that PSV have a different plan laid out.

"I think PSV is counting its chickens before they hatch and that Pepi will be worth just as much after the World Cup, or maybe even more," he said.

That's something Driessen cannot comprehend. He believes that PSV are being foolish rejecting Fulham while they're so keen.

"PSV obviously needs a striker, and Pléa is with us at training camp, but when will he make his comeback?

"So, you shouldn't actually let him go, but are you going to earn €35m back in the Champions League? I would definitely sell him for €35m.

"Of course not, he's not a special footballer at all. He's a good footballer, but not for the top of the Premier League. There's a reason Fulham is signing up and not Liverpool."

Why Liam Rosenior won't be in Chelsea dugout against Fulham
New Blues boss will have to wait a few days for his first game in charge

Liam Rosenior will watch on from the stands at Craven Cottage as Calum McFarlane leads Chelsea against Fulham.

Rosenior was on Tuesday morning announced as Chelsea's new head coach on a contract that runs until 2031 and includes the option to extend by a further 12 months.

The 41-year-old said his goodbyes to Strasbourg in a final press conference held in France shortly before, and will now travel back to London and take his first training session as Chelsea boss at Cobham on Thursday morning as the Blues prepare for Saturday night's FA Cup third-round trip to Charlton.

Before that, the Blues face west London rivals Fulham in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Chelsea decided the Charlton game made more sense as Rosenior's first match in charge, but Standard Sport understands he is expected to sit alongside directors and watch the Fulham derby from the stands at Craven Cottage.

Following the departure of Enzo Maresca on New Year's Day, Chelsea's Under-21s head coach McFarlane took temporary charge of the senior team for Sunday's match against Manchester City, when the Blues earned a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium thanks to Enzo Fernandez's late equaliser.

McFarlane will be in the dugout again for the game against Fulham, before handing over the reins to Rosenior ahead of the weekend visit to The Valley and returning to his usual role.

Rosenior faces a busy first few weeks at the helm of Chelsea, who host Arsenal in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie next week.

His first league match will come in another London derby against Brentford at Stamford Bridge on January 17, which is followed four days later by their penultimate fixture of the Champions League league phase at home to Cypriot club Pafos.

Chelsea also face Crystal Palace, Napoli and West Ham before the end of a hectic January, with the transfer window open for business.

Chelsea get huge triple return boost for Fulham clash as Liam Rosenior plan emerges

Chelsea interim head coach Stuart MacFarlane has confirmed Marc Cucurella and Robert Sanchez are back in training with Moises Caicedo also available again.

He said: "They are all training today. We have training in a few hours. We will have a better idea after the session." It has also been confirmed that new boss Liam Rosenior will watch the Blues' Premier League clash against Fulham at Craven Cottage from the stands.

Having Caicedo, Cucurella and Sanchez all back in the fold will go some way to achieving that. The former will almost definitely start having missed the trip to Etihad Stadium through suspension.

Sanchez is also expected back between the sticks, having missed Sunday's draw with a minor issue, while Wesley Fofana was absent through illness.

There is some doubt surrounding Cucurella, though, with the Spanish left-back missing the last two games because of a thigh injury.

Rosenior's first official game in charge will be the FA Cup third round tie against Charlton this weekend. The now-former Strasbourg boss spoke candidly in his final press conference at the French club before his move was made official.

He said: "I was given the chance to speak to, for me, actually not for me, it's the truth that they're one of the biggest football clubs in the world.

"They were Club World Cup champions and it's an honour for me to be associated with a club like that. Now, on this day, it looks like I'm going to be the next manager of that football club."

As quoted in Chelsea's club statement confirming his appointment, he said: "I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed Head Coach of Chelsea Football Club. This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies.

"My job is to protect that identity and create a team that reflects these values in every game we play as we continue winning trophies. "The environment was incredible, and you know that in the next one [against Chelsea] it's going to be slightly different because it's a special game, and from the first whistle until the last they are going to be completely behind ourselves.

"We need them, we need them in moments of more fatigue or something like that. We need them to push and to be that extra player that is going to be necessary for us to try to win the game."

The last few meetings with our local neighbours have been very tight affairs – the away side snatched a late victory in both games in 2024/25, while the manner of our defeat at the Bridge this season remains a bitter pill to swallow.

"It's special," Silva said of the fixture. "It's special, because we know what's happened. We look for last season, how we won away, how we lost at home, both games with late goals.

"It really hurt ourselves, our fans, this football club, the way we were not able to win the game at Stamford Bridge [this season].

"The way the team performed almost perfectly first half, in a really tough game against a top, top side, the way the team performed, and everything that happened in that game, really hurt this football club. I'm not talking about one or two persons, or just the players – us, the football club, the way that things happened that Saturday morning.

"It is what it is – now it's another opportunity for us to enjoy, to embrace a big challenge with our fans to play a derby like a derby should be played. Simple as that.

Referee appointed for Chelsea vs Fulham has sent off two Blues in last three games, one cost them the match

Fulham request PGMOL explanation after offside controversy in Liverpool draw
Marco Silva believes Florian Wirtz equaliser should not have stood

Fulham have contacted Professional Game Match Official Limited (PGMOL) regarding the controversial decision to allow Florian Wirtz's goal to stand in Sunday's draw with Liverpool.

The German looked to have received the ball in an offside position before firing home to draw Liverpool level at 1-1, and his goal was allowed to stand after a lengthy VAR check.

Stills from the VAR monitor appear to confirm that the player was in an offside position, though footage from the semi-automated offside technology confirmed the goal would stand.

Standard Sport understands Fulham have now reached out to PGMOL for an explanation as to why the goal stood.

Offside rules were adjusted ahead of this campaign to give goalscorers the benefit of the doubt, with a 5cm tolerance level applied to tight decisions. Wirtz, subsequently, was deemed to have been less than 5cm offside.

While Fulham went on to take a deserved point from the match after Harrison Reed's stunning injury-time leveller, Marco Silva was less than impressed with the decision to allow Wirtz's goal to stand.

Speaking at full-time, he said: "We felt the same, many people in the stadium felt the same, but the semi-automatic we have to believe in it. They have to be 100 per cent sure of it.

"It took a long time for something that should be automatic. They have all the tools to decide it right so let's hope they did."

In a near three-minute rant on Tuesday, he added: "Now, I have more images, different tools. For me, I cannot believe how that goal was allowed, it was a clear offside. We are still waiting for feedback from the Premier League. Everyone had the same opinion, it was clear. It's much more than 5cm in my opinion."

It is not the first time this season that Fulham have foul of dubious VAR decisions.

Young midfielder Josh King saw what would have been his first senior goal controversially ruled out at Stamford Bridge early in the campaign after a soft foul in the build-up.

The Blues were eventually awarded an equally contentious penalty, which Enzo Fernandez dispatched to secure a 2-1 win.

Speaking at the time, Silva said: "The second decision was completely unbelievable, for that penalty.

"And it was an unbelievable decision [for King's goal]. You have many decisions to talk about. I have spoken about referees so many times. I am not in the best mood to do it."

From the Press Box: Sessegnon in contention to play SW6 Derby
Jack Kelly updates us from Silva's pre-Derby press conference.

The SW6 derby is always highly anticipated - and rightly so. The last three fixtures between has thrown up plenty of drama, controversy and talking points.

A comment on my latest TikTok filmed after the press conference this afternoon read: "SW6 Derby doesn't exist."

This bot couldn't be more wrong. Every club has games that mean more to the fans than others. As I seem to recall, the away fans were singing many anti-Fulham songs at the Cottage in April during their 1-2 win. I think they care about this fixture more than your average neutral fan thinks.

After the madness of Sunday, Fulham will be fired up for this one for many reasons. Josh King may play no part in the Derby tomorrow evening, but no-one has forgotten the events that took place in the reverse fixture in August.

One player who may feature is Ryan Sessegnon. We were treated to some good news from Marco Silva to kick-off the press conference.

"Same (team) news, apart from Sessegnon, who can be in contention for the game. No Tete, King and Muniz."

That's a welcome boost given the versatile nature of Ryan's game. With Jedi flying, we could see Sess feature at some point on either flank, a position Fulham are short in.

What I liked about today's press conference, was that Silva, in an almost three-minute long answer, expressed essentially the same feelings as all the fans did after Sunday's game, regarding Florian Wirtz's controversial equaliser.

Having had time to look back at the images, Silva felt the goal should not have stood. An opinion that 99% of the footballing world also had. He confirmed that Fulham have not yet hard back from PGMOL, and I'm sure the club will patiently wait for some sort of explanation

"Now, I have more images, different tools. For me, I cannot believe how that goal was allowed, it was a clear offside. We are still waiting for feedback from the Premier League. Everyone had the same opinion, it was clear. It's much more than 5cm in my opinion", said Silva.

"Against Palace at home, our goal from Smith Rowe was disallowed, it was not 5cm, probably half a nail of Chukwueze. The goal was disallowed, what's happened to this game? The tolerance was not spoken about then."

He's bang on. It just further fuels the narrative that Fulham have been on the end of some shocking, shocking decisions this season. We now next play an opponent against whom one of the worst VAR decisions was made.

Silva said he believes at the end of the season, everything will balance itself out, which is a take I've peddled for years. I hope we get something go in our favour tomorrow, or better still, we outclass our opponents - enough to claim all three points.

I'm fired up, the fans are fired up, the players are fired up - and Silva is fired up for this one. Let's leave everything out on the pitch and pray we get a Carlos Vinicius moment from Jonah Kusi-Asare.

Fulham Eyeing Galatasaray Star Gabriel Sara as Midfield Reinforcement
Fulham are reportedly weighing up a move for Galatasaray playmaker Gabriel Sara, as manager Marco Silva looks to bolster his squad with a proven creative force during the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old Brazilian has been a revelation in Türkiye since his €18 million move from Norwich City in 2024, helping the Istanbul giants secure a domestic double of the Süper Lig and the Turkish Cup. According to reports from Trivela, Sara's high-level performances have reignited interest from the Premier League, with several clubs making formal inquiries.

The Ideal Successor to Andreas Pereira?
For Fulham, the interest in Sara is tactically driven. The Cottagers are still looking for a long-term replacement for Andreas Pereira, who departed for Palmeiras in a €10 million deal last August.

Sara would fit seamlessly into a London squad that already features a strong Brazilian core, including fan-favorite striker Rodrigo Muniz and big-money summer signing Kevin. Fulham make €20m offer – Move for player as he returns from injury
Back in November, Tuttomercatoweb mentioned Manchester City as a candidate to land Udinese's Arthur Atta. Fulham have now emerged as a suitor for the midfielder.

Friulian newspaper Messaggero Veneto carry a feature about the 22-year-old, who has risen in stature this season.

They note that the Frenchman has been missing due to injury since late November. He is expected to return to action against Torino on Wednesday.

In the meantime, Fulham have come forward for the midfielder and have been attracted by his earlier performances. They have made a €20m offer for him but this was deemed 'too little' by Udinese.

The London club are provided encouragement about a future move, as the newspaper claims that 'we'll talk about it again'. This is perhaps an indication that Fulham could come back in for Atta next summer.

Udinese are currently focused on making the most out of the player, who has played 15 times in all competitions. He has two goals and two assists in the campaign.

It is unknown how much Fulham would have to pay for Atta in the summer. But it clear that his value is likely to grow, especially if he avoids major injuries.

This can also be an attempt from Udinese to attract other major offers for their asset. It is very unlikely they hold on to him for too long.

Fulham contact PGMOL over 'offside' Wirtz goal
Marco Silva says Fulham have contacted the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) over Florian Wirtz's controversial goal for Liverpool on Sunday.

Wirtz's 57th-minute strike during the Premier League game was initially flagged offside.

But despite replays suggesting the midfielder was in an offside position, the goal was allowed to stand after a video assistant referee (VAR) check to bring Liverpool level at 1-1.

The game went on to finish 2-2 as both sides netted during stoppage time, but Silva described Wirtz's goal as "a clear offside" and called for clarification.

"The club is trying to get in contact [with PGMOL] - until now we didn't have any feedback," Silva said.

It is understood dialogue between Fulham and PGMOL will likely take place as part of the latter's ongoing private engagement with clubs under chief Howard Webb.

Having looked at several images since the weekend, Silva said he "cannot believe" the decision made by officials.

"We are still waiting for some feedback from the Premier League, from PGMOL, because it is very important for us," he said.

"We didn't have the one to make us understand why and not have the same opinion.

"Not just me... me, my staff, our football club, all the other players, fans.

"I think if you go to ask all Premier League [teams, each club] is going to have the same opinion. All the people that love football will have the same opinion as myself."

Why was the strike allowed?
Even Wirtz had not expected the goal to stand, telling Sky Sports: "I was sure it was offside so I didn't even celebrate."

It was given, though, because positions are measured with a tolerance level of about 5cm (1.95in).

That was initially introduced to take into account inaccuries in the offside technology used several seasons ago - for example, being able to judge the correct moment the ball had been passed.

In effect, a player could be positioned marginally offside but ruled onside when the tolerance level was applied.

The Premier League retained that tolerance level when moving over to the semi-automated offside system now used.

Another element involved is the choice of frame. The video assistant referee (VAR) is offered three frames and chooses the first to show contact in the act of playing the ball. It is not when the ball leaves the foot.

In Wirtz's case, the VAR chose one frame and TV broadcasters the next. Wirtz is more clearly offside in the second.

Silva not convinced
That, however, has not placated Silva, who said: "I don't have a way to measure, but in my opinion it is much more than 5cm.

"When you see the moment of the pass in all the images, the player was clear offside."

He also questioned where the tolerance level was a month ago when Emile Smith Rowe had a goal disallowed against Crystal Palace with Samuel Chukwueze narrowly offside in the build-up.

"Where was the story about 5cm tolerance when we scored against Palace?" Silva asked.

"It was half of the nail, probably 1cm or 2cm that was offside."
