I know it's done and dusted but can someone explain why Cuenca had to leave the pitch when he went down holding his head, allowing Palace to score? He wasn't treated by on-pitch physios.

In the Arsenal-United game there were multiple instances of players going down holding their heads and the ref stopping play and not once did he make the players leave the pitch.  It's infuriating and I felt at the time that it wasn't part of the laws.

You said it there, he was holding his head, not a head injury. Pleased to see the ref not falling for the fake head injury ruse

So you're saying that if a player goes down pretending it's a head injury the laws require him to leave the pitch? Is this an Actual sanction or did the refereee make it up in the moment? But if it is a head injury he can stay on?

No idea but I'm happy for refs to order time wasters to get off the pitch. One of the most infuriating parts of the game and I'm embarassed Cuenca did that. It's a blemish in an otherwise great run of games since Bassey left for Afcon.

Heading the football may well be banned in the future, judging by the amount of health issues re brain damage to former players. And yes time wasting is very annoying m, but all teams do it to their advantage 🙄

"Once a referee stops a game for a suspected head injury, a doctor or physiotherapist will assess the player on the pitch. The player then must leave the field of play for more medical assessment and stay off for at least 30 seconds after the game restarts."

Ok so why did Cuenca leave the pitch then as he wasn't assessed? And if he was faking it he was effectively sin binned which isn't a power the referee has! So we conceded a goal when a player shouldn't have been off the pitch.

SuffolkWhite

What should be happening with a suspect head injury is the player is removed from the game, that will stop the play acting and hopefully safeguard the player.

Rugby protocol could stop the nonsense where players feign head or facial injury.  Any such real or fake injuries should automatically mean removal from the pitch and medical - not team physio - assessment. That will stop the play acting.

I would fully endorse this.

Said it before, if a player is 'injured' then they need to be assessed before playing on.

Please read law 4 (a) paragraph 27 sub section 2....."if a player is recovering from a head injury, he must only leave the field of play if he's wearing a Fulham shirt & the ref feels it will benefit the opposing team"... Them's the rules

I would like to think that Cuenca has learned his lesson and won't fake an Injury again.
He embarrassed himself and let the team down by his actions.

The referee stopped the game because Cuenca may have suffered a head injury. If the injury had been severe, he would have been treated on the pitch. That Cuenca then jumped to his feet, however, meant he could be treated on the touchline. Even though the referee doubtless could see Cuenca had over-reacted, he does have the power to insist the player leave the field of play to be medically assessed for possible concussion.

Far too much play acting from all teams, I think all fans of all clubs dislike it.

Yep Arthur's right - and I would add that he called Cuenca's bluff straight away. He did actually signal for the physios to come on. Cuenca's decision and our reaction to being a man down were both pretty poor I thought
