Why is everyone melting down?

Quote from: Andrew on August 30, 2026, 08:43:35 PMIf you watched today's game you'll know why there is a melt down.

Let me just remind you of the key features.
The squad is not good enough, ;ess good than last season
 *the manager is a novice
*the manager wants to play a style that does not suit the players and will not be pragmatic
*the manager, from his post match comments, doesn't seem to have a clue
*we needed to get muniz on and let garcia play off him and around him, their defence had no problem cancellung out *garcia's qualities because of very poor tactics.
*the substitutions were ridiculous
* we never had a single decent deadball delivery

the errors made today were largely tactical and avoidable
I  am willing to give the man a chance but after all these years I have little confidence.

The real problem is with our senior management not assembling a proper squad for Marco and as a result keeping him. BUT not having a proper squad in place for a new man is breathtakingly poor.

My wife, who has a season ticket but for personal reasons has not seen the team for quite a while watched the game with me and commented very early how lightweight we were and so unlikely to carve out enough chances as a result.....

I hope by the end of October things resolve well ad you will be free to tell me I was wrong. And I will have the good grace to agree.
Spot on.  You could foresee this could happen, when we signed a manager with virtually no track record, then lost players with experience, and replaced them with players with virtually no track record at top flight level.
Of course we should all be optimistic at the start of a season, but the errors and frailties we've seen already are symptomatic of the club's poorly thought out strategy.
Had we signed an experienced manager that had proven himself, I'd have more confident, but I can't see any reason to expect Arbelao will do well for us, other than blind faith.

I honestly think it's a generational thing. No patience. Success needs to come as quickly as the Amazon delivery. If they aren't winning 4-0 every week the DoF is a clown.

New system, players and coach. All need time.

Ha! Yeah all these Gen Zers on here posting unhinged rants about Tony Kahn.

I must be much younger than I thought! Serious;y, it isn't about patience, or the lack of it. Nil points is fine if we can see the direction of travel. But after the first two games can you please enlighten me because all I see is a dog's breakfast.  If this mess (as I see it) all resolves itself and we settle into a style, a rythm, some form and a run of decent results I will be soooooo delighted. I just struggle to see where such an outcome is coming from.

I agree with the General in that its a tad early to have a meltdown regarding the new manager. We lost to Chelsea but looked good, we slaughtered the Dons who were a capable opposition. The Sunderland performance was very poor and his substitutions made us weaker if any change at all. Leaving out Muniz who scored in his last game was a massive oversight (literally) in a match which needed a big target man up top, but taken with the other games he doesn't look too bad. Hopefully he'll learn quickly!

The team that started other than 2 players were starters under Silva. Garcia had scored 2 in 2 so looking good and Palacios is a youngster finding his feet as was King last year. Of those we let go Wilson didn't want to sign a contract, Raul is getting on and needed replacing and the two we sold were part of an Ipswich team that ManUre ripped apart. Sunderland are a decent side who have qualified for Europe. Regardless of the who our manager is we don't have a right to beat anyone. Silva made some pretty strange substitutions at times so maybe AA is seeing what players can do what. Either way I'm sure he learned a lot about his squad after Sunday.

Woolly Mammoth

Let us all relax, concentrate on the last few hours of the transfer window, which may end up very exciting.
Prepare for the arrival of Crystal Palace who will fancy their chances with noisy support behind them which we must match.
Then wait to see the starting lineup, and then watch Fulham secure their first three points of the season.
What an exciting next few days this will be waiting in anticipation.
The only thing I cannot tell you is which Fulham players will score and how many.

Its not the man in the fight, it's the fight in the man.  🐘

Well Woolly one of the 11 on the pitch will score, or one of the 22 if it's an own goal.

No meltdown, just concern here. Two games, zero points. The first game completely wide open at the back with good fortune to have not given up 4 or 5 goals. The second game with zero shots on goal. A manager with no track record of success in the Premier League. I am not sure where the foundation of play is at this point.

I also wonder if a great deal of unease comes from this veteran group having few true leaders. It's not a criticism of them, just an acknowledgement of their personalities. If the club are caught in a relegation scrap, who are the fighters?

WindyCity

True, I have seen some meltdowns, but also have seen quite a few 'let's give it some time' sentiments as well.  I suppose looking at the broad picture, most fans probably sit somewhere in between those two feelings.  For me, yes, I was very disappointed in the Sunderland show.  Not one shot on target, not good.  I had posted before that match that I was looking for points in the next two games.  Well, now it's down to the Palace tilt.  If we leave that game with nothing to show, I will become very nervous indeed.

Palace and Bournemouth hired managers without a track record in the Prem and have done so again this time. Managers who have performed well in the Prem don't come to Fulham. Silva's track record in the Prem wasn't anything to boast about but SK had faith in him.

Carborundum

Not a lot of data points yet, but we probably know he's more adaptable than Amorim.

When I was little my best mate got a darts board and I went round his house to have a go.  I was encouraged to aim for the bullseye.  The first dart hit the ceiling coving.  The second the skirting board.  Arbeloa's not that wayward.  But there's nothing about those two PL games that reminds me of day-of-the-jackal style fine calibration either.  Which will come first - the clicking, or the head-dropping despondency?  Still optimistic the team will click.

On Palace and Bournemouth, they also have a track record of hiring managers as ownership who have kept them up.

The Khans have 1, Silva. Beyond that they are 0 for 6. The optimist would say they know what they are looking for now, the pessimist would say they got lucky with Silva.

I disagree with your characterization of Silva. Look at Hull before he got there and what he did to turn them around in his brief time. Everton and Watford after he left were worse off for quite awhile. He was and still is a proven Premier League manager. His whole negative reputation was in his job climbing persona which was part earned and part a media creation.

There's a difference between having a track record in the premier league and having no track record whatsoever. Iraola was highly successful as a manager in Spain for 4 years before coming to Bournemouth and Glasner won the Europa League with Frankfurt. They were already highly accomplished before coming to the prem so not nearly as high risk as the Arbeloa appointment was.

Ill happily reserve judgement after 10 games .losing 2 games by the odd goal with a new man in charge is not the end of the world .I think hes still learning his best lineup. And which players arent giving their all. With more new players coming in its always going to be a work in progress. The first win is crucial as ever. We do appear to have a more fical following these days. The club are backing him & he needs time. We had awful games under marco too. I dont get the panic

He got relegated with Hull and then resigned. Went to Watford where he got sacked for talking to Everton, where he took them to 8th and then, you've guessed it, got sacked the following season. Hardly a track record of success.

Yes there is a difference in having a track record in the Prem and no track record whatsoever but that was not what the W FFC put. AA does have a track record of management, of one of the biggest clubs in the world, albeit for 6 months, with a win ratio of 65%. People can dismiss that as much as they want but to say he has no track record isn't entirely correct.

12 January to 23 May isn't 6 months. Crazy to think that's enough of a track record to make any sort of qualified assessment on.

You can do whatever you want with it as you are perfectly entitled to but he's still managed Real Madrid something no Fulham manager has done before joining us and quite likely never will again.
