FULHAM plan a raid for Wigan striker Hugo Rodallega – and hope to tie up an agreement before the January transfer window opens, writes Dave Kidd.

The Colombian is out of contract in June and the struggling Latics could cash in on him after his goals dried up alarmingly.

Fulham boss Martin Jol has been backed by the club's board to freshen up an ageing squad, and he also has Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard on his radar.

Andy Johnson is likely to leave in January while fellow striker Bobby Zamora is unsettled.

Rodallega, 26, is Jol's No.1 target in the mid-season window, with a £3million bid on the cards.

Arsene Wenger is said to be unconvinced after Arsenal tracked him – but Rodallega has options in Italy, Turkey and the Middle East.

Several years reading this sort of thing now, and I still don't understand the mentality. Rather a guy who is underperforming because he has Prem experience rather than someone who is sticking them in in another league.

I'm curious, where does this thinking come from? I haven't been around long enough but seems to me that getting someone who has confidence is better than someone who doesn't, unless of course you are convinced you can snap the low confidence player out of it.....both a bit of gamble but why do we always prefer the Prem player who is out of form? I'm just curious what others think.

suspect it's all about the style of play: AJ's not exactly a flair player and is on the downswing; Rodellega is youngish and has all kinds of ability and would fit with Jol's more expansive ideals.  He may very well be disillusioned at Wigan but I reckon he's a cracking player.

buy low I guess. Rodellega's ability may be x, his recent performances y.  For whatever reason, but Jol will think he can get a certain level of performance out of the player, and with relegation on the cards there's no chance of him signing a new contract.  What that means is that he's almost certainly going to be a bargain.  £3m is a reserve player/squad player fee, Rodellega's worth more than that whatever role he ends up playing.

I remember Hodgson being commended by some journo about getting in a good player like Hangeland. Roy commented that of course he knew Hangeland was a good player from managing him previously, but NO manager knows in advance whether that good player is going to cut it in the prem or not, which is why players with a prem track record command bigger transfer fees.

Personally I'm against this signing and agree it's not a brilliant reason , I was just giving potential positives.

Just thinking that sometimes you put an under-performing individual in to a different team with a new manager and it can be a new lease of life.

I would not be unhappy with him at the club. Ok has not set Wigan on fire but we have better players and he would/may get better service.

Perfect example being BZ and then the opposite, AJ, well not entirely opposite but he has been less than what we expected.

I'm thinking of guys like Jerome, Jones, Crouch, Keane, and Torres who all left there respective teams out of form and have not really panned out for any of their new teams.

Got to remember he plays in a pretty lousy Wigan team. Always looks very isolated because he's playing upfront by himself. He may fair better off here where team confidence is generally better. I think he's worth a punt though, he's young, quick and fairly strong and proven in the past that he can finish although he's hit a rough patch at the moment. Think he'd offer us something different to what we get from Bobby and AJ. I endorse this transfer!

The only problem/question mark I have with this story is that Fulham and AM have always kept their cards close to their chest. Why talk about it now? Nothing good coming out of that. Someone is either leaking news (probably the agent) or simply the author is making it up (which Dave Kidd usually doesn't do).

We desparately need a fast counter attacking player to establish Jol's 4-3-3. Rodallega can play on the wings in a 4-3-3 and would be a very good player to start off with.

Not at all, we have Dempsey. He's very fast but in a deceptive way!
