Hangeland not as close to new contract as expected?

Not to instill panic or anything, but Hangeland was interviewed yesterday after the Norway friendly. His agent said that he and the club were not close to agreeing on a contract, and Hangeland didn't refute it when asked, merely stating that they hadn't reached an agreement.

Hopefully nothing more than an attempt to get the upper hand in the negotiations, but I still don't like it.

As long as Hangeland only said 'I have not signed a new contract' and it was his agent saying 'the deal is not close' then I am not worried.

If Hangeland said 'I dont want to sign a new contract' I would be gutted and very worried.

I must admit the noises from the club have been very negative over the closed season. Transfers and contract negotiations have been very underwhelming. There is always the need by some to be positive and say trust in Jol and the MD. But if something has happened and there is a shift in money matters or relationships between players and managers, there is little that can be done.

We never know what is going on and these MBs encourage us to put our nose up against the window and speculate what is going on. But I cannot remember a more downbeat start to a Prem season. I will leave it to others to list all the positives of youYh players etc. But there is a general melaise about the squad right now.

Still time for that to change I guess.

The accounts show that our wage bill is about right for a mid table team. We don't over or under pay for a club finishing 8th to 12th.

I doubt we'd have signed Rodellega on a Bosman without offering a good contract.

What I'm sure is happening is that players at the end of their careers are being offered less good contracts than they had in their prime and if clubs like QPR offer better then so be it or more fool them.

Also we're being careful who we bring in.

Bad news from Norway today. Hangeland is far from signing a new contract with Fulham and says this may be the last year at the club. #ffc

Really don't like the sound of this. I hope we're not just offering him a 1+1 year deal, Brede is worth more than that and he knows it.

Yes, if he decides to move on, there will definitely be clubs out there wanting to sign him. He's got a good track record on the injuries front unlike some other CBs in the Prem - we should offer him an acceptable package!

Exactly. And like it says in the article above, he has played more matches in the Premier League than any other player in the league during the last four years, missing just eight games. That speaks volumes.

i have no idea why people bang on about how we are run. We are not as perfect as some say

Firstly i have supported the club since i Can first remember (father is a fan so passed down to me).
The academy side we are top class cant fault it, I wont ever say a bad word about MAF as without him we would still be in division 3!

However, we have a real problem in dealing with contracts. Some say its balancing the books etc.. I fear our internal policy will be our downfall more than players and manager. With reports at the moment our three best players HAVE BEEN allowed to get to 1 year remaining on their contracts and not one is even close to signing. Seriously why am I the only one who sees this as a problem internally. WHY oh WHY did we not open talks last summer? Why we do always do this to ourselves. We finish strongly and yet once again we have not been able to build on it.

Theres the problem though what is an acceptable package, if the club offer what they consider to be an acceptable package, and the player/agent does not agree, supporters always assume it is the club that is wrong, maybe the players demands are excessive.

Just a thought

He would be looking for a bumper final contract and I suspect if there is an issue that's the problem.
If we are being a bit tight with money I would rather we did that than 'live the dream' like pompey.

:plus one: It's crazy. Although on the flip side you could say that players weren't offered new deals last year as we had only just got a new manager and he wanted to see what they could do first! But even then we should have been offering these guys contracts in January or something!

Unless you actually work at the club you will not know what our policy is or if the players in question have been offered new contracts with 2 years left but have said that they were'nt ready to sign an extension.

So anything you hear is just rumour and to be honest i'd rather FFC ran a tight ship than end up like Pompey/Leeds and potentially QPR by splashing money wiith no fiscal contrel

Could be his last season at Fulham says Brede.

Bored players or Jols influence?

well if you actually read, then jol has come out in the summer saying the club were opening talks with the players....both brede and dempsey at christmas said they are still waiting for ANY contract talks to begin. Regardless of the players stance, as a club we DID not open talks when we should have. From that alone, it is clear we made no attempt last summer which is the clubs fault .

And in reference to your tight ship theory. If we do sell brede, dempsey and dembele we still would need to buy three new players so really the free wage space would be taken up straight away. We would not be breaking the bank. It would be portsmouth and leeds like to buy, buy, buy and offer wages close to the 80k mark. For a fact our highest wage is 50k and brede at his age will know he wont get much better elsewhere so why not keep him happy? He has deserved it! Dempsey again nearing 30 is a middle club player and probly yes will want 50-75k in wages which we could afford as zamora,aj are gone.

Dembele is the only player who could be earning a lot more but as a club we failed to get a bigger fee for him (which is what we rely on) as guess what?? We have left it too late

theo

All he's said is that he doesn't feel that he needs to worry about the contract because he is in a good position re negotiation, and when asked if he wanted to play his last few years at a different club he said that was something he'd have to decide this season.

JBH

Basically your saying that if a player won't extend his contract then he should always be sold with 2 years remaining regardless of his age and ability??

We all have different veiws and as the players have all the power these days then the club will always appear to be at fault.

HatterDon

What? St. Brede and his agent say at a news conference that he hasn't signed a new contract? What insurrection! What a lack of concern for the fans! What ingratitude for the club that brought him to England.

Well, he was born in Texas after all.  yee-haw!

I really think we should have a rating system for these panics.

I am capable of only three panics per day. At present Dempsey and Dembele take care of two of these and I am alternating on a daily basis between 'no Murphy replacement' and 'no second (or possibly third) striker'. And now this Scandanavian bombshell. No wonder I look as if I am 64 years of age (there is, actually, another reason for this).

It doesn't end there. either. Do we not realise that, this time next year, Alex Kacaniklic will only have one year(plus option) left on his contract? Should we not be getting our panicking in early on this one?

I like this idea.

Maybe we should colour code the threads depending on the level of panic being induced?
