Really missed the boat there, he's looked good for Swansea. Much better passer than I appreciated and is playing a deeper role with plenty of success. £5 million for a home grown England international with plenty of years ahead of him. What a bargain!

Ordar

Swansea have done some high quality business again this window

Scrumpy

I didn't rate Shelvey at all at Liverpool. Maybe he will prove me wrong. Early days.
English by birth, Fulham by the grace of God.

The season hasn't even started yet so let's wait a while until branding the bargains and flops of the transfer window.

I don't think we've missed out on much tbh, didn't rate him at all at Liverpool and don't expect him to prove me wrong at Swansea.

Completely agree, as soon as swansea signed him i was baffled why we didnt try get him. We need a creative cm, hes young and english, 5 mill isnt thst risky, no brainer really

Brown@FFC

Swansea won a cup, making them attractive. Add that to their good manager, stable owner and their Barcaesque football, they are a very nice looking club.

SaltfordWhite

I maybe horribly mistaken and apologies if I am, but isn't Shelvey just a younger, less disciplined Sidwell?

No similarity other than both have a short fuse.

Stefano Okaka Chuka

Shelvey?! He'll maybe develop into a world beater but he'd be my 4th choice after Sidwell, Boateng and Karagounis in midfield at the moment. Perhaps 5th after Chris David.

he was surely a dud at liverpool... but it's a weird side. has looked very competent in swans preseason/europa. congrats to them if it works out, the system seems to suit him. not convinced he'd fit as seamlessly into our disjointed system.

Deanothefulhamfan

Hes a young English player and 5 million isnt bad business.... I just wasnt a big fan of him at liverpool, but perhaps with a decent run in the team he will get his confidence and be a quality signing.

Prehaps we didn't try and sign him because we didn't want him!!

Spot on. So often on this board we read of this and that "bargain" that we missed out on or should have "taken a punt" on - with the club's or other people's money. It's easy to sit behind a keyboard and speculate or criticise.

Yes, there are times when one can look back (Jol said that he regretted not pursuing Benteke, for example but saw him as a bit of a risk), but most of the time if we "swooped" for all of these "bargains" or "punts" we'd have a squad of goodness knows how many, paying goodness knows how much in wages and most would be disgruntled that they weren't playing.

Of course, it's enormously frustrating that recruiting the key players that we need is taking so long, that we have no idea of what's happening behind the scenes (if anything) and when we see apparently decent/suitable players going elsewhere. But it is essential that new purchases properly complement the existing squad and have a real role to fill; besides, maybe we did make  enquiries and they didn't want to come. It's not Tesco's and we're not Barcelona.

Whether we wanted him is beside the point. He's what we need and he was cheap.
