Silva: 'We were not at the level the Premier League demands'
Marco Silva conceded Fulham were not at the required level after a 3-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium ended their European push.

Marco Silva spoke candidly about a 3-0 defeat for Fulham against Arsenal.

The Cottagers were on the cusp of the qualifying places for continental competition, but they struggled to spark into life at the Emirates Stadium to capitalise on a defeat for Brighton.

'We have to do the basics well'

Viktor Gyokeres and Bukayo Saka sealed the three points for the hosts before the first half was over, netting three goals to give the Gunners breathing room at the top of the table. It was a disappointing display in the eyes of the head coach, who sees the result as a reminder of the required standards.

"Of course, we have to congratulate Arsenal for the three points, but we made their life too easy. Too easy in the first half, the way we were not at the level that this type of game demands from ourselves.

"One thing is making us to be a team that is always hard to play against, because we are always very competitive, we are always brave. We have a clear identity how to play, and during the first half, all these aspects, they were not on the pitch. We expected Arsenal to start the way they did. We planned to try to start strong, too, and to try to express ourselves, to express ourselves on the pitch.

"Sometimes it's not easy to set your game straightaway when you come to these type of places – their quality, their capacity to press. You have to be strong in duels, we have to be able to hold the ball, you have to be able to beat your man, and, of course, off the ball, we have to do the basics well.

"And, this afternoon, if you look at the way we conceded the three goals during the first half, we are not at the level that the Premier League demands from you. I'm not talking about the game against Arsenal – [but the level that the] Premier League demands from you.

"We were not able to defend the box like we should defend, and to be strong enough in that type of moment. And that was the reason why the first half was a big frustration from us, and a disappointing performance from ourselves in all aspects of the game. We were second best in almost everything in the first half. Clear conversation at half-time, the message was clear for them. It was our obligation.

"The minimum we should have done is to do completely different things second half. We did it, but was too late already, and the damage was there."

The battle for sixth... and why teams might need to lose on final day
Bournemouth have claimed the edge in the battle for sixth place in the Premier League - and what could be the strangest Champions League spot yet.

The in-form Cherries' 3-0 win over Crystal Palace helped them overtake Brentford into that position.

Even more remarkably there might be teams on the final day who might need to LOSE to end up in the Champions League.

At the very least sixth will earn a Europa League place - with some of the contenders having never qualified for Europe before.

BBC Sport looks into what this all means.

How could sixth qualify for Champions League?

If Villa win Europa League and finish fifth
(And the FA Cup winners finish top seven)

Both elements needed for sixth place to be a Champions League spot seem quite plausible.

Aston Villa would need to finish in fifth spot exactly (where they currently reside) and win the Europa League.

They trail Nottingham Forest 1-0 after the semi-final first leg, but are at home for Thursday's return leg.

This scenario will only play out if Villa finish fifth - and not in the top four (or below fifth) - because of a quirk in Uefa's rules.

The Premier League landed a fifth Champions League place because of English teams' performances in Europe - something called the European Performance Spot (EPS).

In short, when it comes to dishing out European spots, Uefa goes by domestic positions and who won the European trophies first, before factoring in the EPS.

So if Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth, that EPS spot would be passed down to the team in sixth - who would qualify for the Champions League.

However, if Villa finish in the top four then winning the Europa League would make no difference to any other English teams. In this situation the sixth-placed finisher would qualify for the Europa League.

Who is battling for sixth spot?



With Aston Villa six points clear in fifth spot, sixth appears to be the highest any of the other teams could finish.

At the moment Bournemouth are on 52 points, one point clear of Brentford, who are in turn one point above Brighton.

Bournemouth and Brentford have never played in any European competition before, while Brighton's only Uefa campaign was in the 2023-24 Europa League.

Chelsea are four points behind the Cherries, but have a game in hand against Nottingham Forest on Monday.

Fulham are level on points with Chelsea. Everton - who have a game in hand against Manchester City - and Sunderland are on 47 points, so just about in the race.

Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Leeds could still mathematically - but not realistically - qualify for the Champions League.

What about seventh?
Whoever just misses out on sixth will have the compensation of securing at least a Conference League spot, which as it stands goes to seventh place.

All the Villa/fifth-place shenanigans do not affect that - because if England gets that extra Champions League spot they lose a Europa League place.

But, and of course there's a but, eighth place could yet qualify for the Conference League.

If Manchester City win the FA Cup, or if Chelsea win it and finish in the top seven - they are currently ninth - then the European spots will change.

In that scenario, seventh place would get into the Europa League and eighth would be a Conference League spot.

So what was that about teams wanting to lose?
It is unlikely to come to fruition, but there is a chance the team in sixth place might need to lose on the final day to earn a Champions League spot.

Brighton are at home to third-placed Manchester United, and Brentford are at Liverpool, who are fourth.

Liverpool are above Aston Villa only on goal difference, while Manchester United are six points clear of both following Sunday's games.

If Brighton or Brentford were confident of holding on to sixth spot even with a loss - given they could be relying on their opponents to win and keep Villa in fifth place as explained above - that could get them into the Champions League instead of the Europa League.

How many English teams could qualify still?
As things stand eight English teams will qualify for Europe - but it could be as high as 10.

If Nottingham Forest win the Europa League and Crystal Palace win the Conference League (and don't finish in the top seven or eight), then half the league will be in Europe next season.

Marco Silva representatives working on sealing Chelsea move
Chelsea parted ways with Liam Rosenior recently, and they are looking to bring in a quality long-term replacement, with Marco Silva a target.

Chelsea are keeping tabs on Marco Silva as a long-term replacement for Liam Rosenior. The 48-year-old has done quite well for Fulham over the years, and he could prove to be an interesting acquisition. Silva will certainly be attracted to the idea of managing a bigger club.

The Portuguese tactician has done an excellent job at Fulham since 2021, and he has established themselves as a reliable mid-table team in the Premier League. According to an update by French journalist Sebastien Vidal, his representatives are now working to finalise a move to Chelsea this summer.

Silva helped them secure promotion to the Premier League, and they have done reasonably well under him with their limited resources. The former Everton boss has a 43% win rate as a Fulham manager, and he is averaging 1.6 points per game, which is quite commendable for a mid-table club.

Marco Silva will fancy a big move
Silva will feel that he has the pedigree to make his mark at the highest level, and the opportunity to manage Chelsea will be quite exciting for him. The Blues have extensive resources, and top-quality players are available for disposal. They need someone who can unlock the squad's true potential, and Silva has shown he can maximise the resources at his disposal.

Chelsea have been linked with multiple managers in recent weeks, and it remains to be seen who they end up with as their managerial search continues. The West London outfit need to get the managerial decision right. They have had a mediocre season, and they could miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification for the next season.

They must bounce back strongly next season and return to the UEFA Champions League. Otherwise, it would be a huge financial blow for them, and it would make life difficult for them in the transfer market as well

In addition, some of their players have been linked with moves away from the club in the summer. Bringing in a quality manager helps them convince the top players to continue at the club. Silva has been a reliable manager in the Premier League over the years, and this is the right time for him to take the next step in his career and take on a new challenge.
