I just been reading an article about djed spence on voy forums.He was aright back very strong and quick but had problems off the park.At the time we had a few fullbacks names escape me one left and went to Leeds.Also their was a couple of others one from jersey who was highly promising but too many injuries stopped his growth.He is now playing in the Belgian league.Spence I rated highly but fell out with the main youth leader complaints from the place he was staying coming home late warned many times etc went to middleborough under walnock could not get him to behave went to Nottingham forest under the present westham manager they could not control him and then went tobspurs and he has grown up.I feel to teach and control kids in youth football is an art and I feel theirs not many good ones about.

Surprised to see Spence got the call. He's had problems with disrespecting his managers - so didn't strike me as ideal for the team dynamic Tuchel wants.

He's had cousins pass away in gang violence and a very difficult background.

Apparently he's absolutely rapid and can play both LB and RB which is why I imagine he's been chosen, and they  maybe don't expect he'll rock the boat if not chosen.

The thing I always heard about Djed Spence is it wasn't talent which is why we got rid. Always been a bit of work. But talent was never a question mark.

The other right back was Cody Drameh, having a decent second tier career. Joined Hull in 2024 so will be at Wembley on Saturday but he's been injured a little while. Apparently he's fit for the squad but be amazed if you throw him in for that game. Over 100 games at 24 is no small feat.

The kid from Jersey was Marlon Fossey. He's been a regular at Standard Liege in Belgium and since made his US debut. Won't be in the World Cup squad but he's getting loads of gametime over there.

Good for them all honestly, if you can't always develop players to play for your team, it's great for us to be able to produce so many that go on to have decent careers. These kids all develop at different rates, some aren't good enough at 20 but too good for you by the time they're 25. Some need a certain environment, some need to grow and get stronger, some need to get smarter. It's not a perfect science nor will ever be. I remember Ebere Eze (spent time at Fulham amongst many others) saying he almost needed all of his rejections to switch on. Some give up at the first rejection, others may think there'll always be a club that takes them on and ride on it.

To go sideways a little bit, this is why the Chelsea system is failing. Development isn't linear, some players at 18 are as good as they'll ever be. They may be the best player in their age group at that age but that doesn't guarantee they'll be so at 26. I do think Football Manager and FIFA poisoned the mines of many, it is that idea that development is guaranteed. It's just not how real life works.
