I stayed up all night wondering where the sun went — then it dawned on me.

Flamethrowers and global warming, some of you are insufferable.

Angus Telford

Agreed, in a world that's literally burning in front of our eyes, it seems silly to have a little display of the fossil fuel burning that got us into this mess, as a needless ritual before a football match.

MikeTheCubed

Accounts for approximately 0.000000001% of annual CO2 emissions per match.

and mad scientists with nothing better to do but sit in a glass jar in a laboratory in Siberia losing the plot whilst trying to justify their existence.

The first year we came back up (22/23) we drew 0-0 away to Wolves in one of our first games in late August. There was a heatwave at the time, the aircon in the car I was driving at the time had long given up the ghost, and so drove up to Wolverhampton with the windows wide open the whole way. On the way up they were reporting on the radio that the PL & football league had told all clubs to relax restrictions on bringing drinks into grounds due to the weather. I went into the asda near Molineux before the game, every bottle of cold drink had been purchased, and most of the unfrigerated ones too, I managed to get a warm two litre bottle of flavoured water, one of the last on the shelf, to bring into the ground.

Now, the away section as many will know is along the lower tier down the side of the pitch. This section was bearing the full brunt of the sun. People were waiting in the concourse before taking their seats just before ko to avoid the heat for as long as possible. When the teams emerged for the game, a row of flame throwers on the touchline in front of the away fans went off! The heat was ridiculous, it was honestly the maddest, most stupid thing i've ever experienced in a football ground.

It added nothing to the spectacle on a 90f day in broad daylight. Whenever I see those flame throwers i'll always remember it.

They look silly on a sunny day. Evening and late autumn or winter matches they can add to the pre- match atmosphere.
The world is made up of electrons, protons, neurons, possibly muons and, definitely, morons.

I think we are stuck with these things until there is an accident. I cannot see the point of them. 1. Who invented them? 2. What is the point? 3. How much does it cost to hire them 4. Is it the same company supplying every club in the premier league. It's robbery non a grand scale.

Ludlow Richard

We managed well over 2000 home league games without flame throwers. Did we miss anything by not having them? No. Do we gain anything by having them? No.

I'm puzzled as to why the H&S "experts" allow this anyway. I guess the chances of one of these things exploding is low but why introduce an unnecessary risk into a football ground?

Quote from: john dempsey on July 25, 2026, 10:37:04 AMIt's a good way to burn off the
Excess gas, from obnoxious Football pundits.
Also the club use the Fumes from the Hammy end Toilets,
so it is very Environmentally friendly.

There is a still a street lamp in London directly powered by sewer gas. I'm not saying there's quite enough for the floodlights but you never know.

Diesel or paraffin from the smell. TBF, in the winter, they make it warmer for about 30 seconds, I think they are remote controlled Galaxis G burners

Sparklers on Bonfire night.

They already do, although we are allowed Catherine Wheels.
Incidentally I once went out with a Lady called Catherine Wheel who was a real Sparkler.
She drove an old Banger.
But she gave me a hell of a Rocket when she found out I supported Fulham and dumped me for a bloke called Roman Candle who was a Firefighter.
Sounds like she thought you were a bit of a damp squib. That match was never going to work!

Wrong again the match did work because it was a Swan Vesta and it could light up a Stick of Dynamite 🧨

Then she went out with a lighter who could
do it again and again.

It is unbelievable but you can feel the heat in the JH stand when they go flame up or whatever the pyrotechnical phrase is.
