The worst referee has gone - Arsenal are mourning

Anthony Taylor, arguably the worst referee in the top division, has retired early. He said it was due to the pressure of scrutiny and he had enough, but he created his own problems by being the most controversial ref on purpose.

One always felt Taylor wanted to be the centre of attention rather than the example of a good referee being barely visible in a match. Taylor would be inconsistent with himself; giving dives then booking divers in another match: having a virtual "no foul" rule then blowing up constantly for minor infringements.

He would provoke teams, allowing a last minute corner to be taken then blowing the final whistle in mid-air. I remember Clive Owen did that years ago with similar reaction; in Taylor's case it was Mourinho who continued to intimidate him in the car park after the match.

Taylor single-handedly made Arsenal win 2 FA Cups against Chelsea and if one asked any Arsenal fan they would state Anthony Taylor is their favourite referee.

I'm glad he's gone, 'cause he made the rest of the refs bad as well. Now we only need to get rid of the Aussie Jarred Gillet who's been awful but for some reason is the only foreign official allowed in the EPL. Maybe because he's awful??

Donkey boy, you mean Clive Thomas! Clive Owen is an actor.

I'll agree he was often inconsistent, even during the same match.

Unfortunately, his replacement is unlikely to be any better.

It's odd, taylor was one of the few refs I had any time for and do not really agree with most of the criticism that came his way.

When we had him he diod not favour the big teams in the way oliver and so many others do, in fact oliver IMO is the way worst for being less than impartial.

The thing with supporters of big teams are concerned, if you give any decision against them they claim the ref is anti their team regardless.

How he didn't send Grealish off in the play off final I will never know, but Fredericks may also have seen red even earlier. Will also never forget the joke penalty he gave against Ream at Hounslow. Won't be missed, but as someone said his replacement will be even worse. There is something rotten to the core about the English referee system but when the game can't even sort out serial cheats like C******, Man City and Southampton, when will that manager be banned?, what hope is there.
