Everton, Fulham, Newcastle United vying for Javi Rodriguez
Everton, Fulham, and Newcastle United are keen on acquiring the services of Celta Vigo defensive sensation Javi Rodriguez.

Newcastle United, Everton, and Fulham have all made enquiries about Celta Vigo defender Javi Rodriguez in recent weeks, with the three Premier League clubs exploring a potential move for the versatile Spanish defender before the summer transfer window closes.

According to Faro de Vigo via Sport Witness, all three clubs are assessing options to strengthen their defensive ranks. Newcastle's interest has emerged after their pursuit of Karim Coulibaly ended with the defender joining RC Strasbourg, prompting the Magpies to consider alternatives.

Rodriguez has emerged as an attractive option because of his versatility and rapid development. The 23-year-old made his senior debut in 2023 after progressing through Celta Vigo's academy. Although primarily a centre-back, he has also operated at right-back, giving interested clubs additional flexibility.

The Spaniard made 46 appearances last season and became an important member of Claudio Giraldez's side. His performances were enough to earn him a place in the Spanish national team, further increasing his profile in the European market.

Rodriguez is currently under contract with Celta until 2028. While he is currently valued at around €18 million, his contract carries a reported €40 million release clause. That could make negotiations difficult, although a substantial offer before the deadline could potentially force the situation to develop quickly.

Why do the three Premier League clubs want Rodriguez?
Newcastle United have particular reasons to consider the defender. Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are both 34, meaning the Magpies need to begin planning for the future in central defence. Rodriguez could also cover right-back, an area the Tyneside club are reshaping after Kieran Trippier's departure, though Amar Dedic has arrived from SL Benfica.

Everton are rebuilding their defensive depth. The Toffees currently have only three senior centre-backs, with James Tarkowski and Michael Keane both 33. Rodriguez's age and versatility could therefore make him a long-term solution rather than simply additional squad depth.

Fulham find themselves in a similar situation after Issa Diop's departure left them with only three senior centre-backs. Rodriguez could offer them another option while potentially competing for a starting role.

With the transfer window entering its final days, the three Premier League clubs have limited time to act. Celta Vigo are under no immediate pressure to sell given Rodriguez's long-term contract, but a sizeable offer could change the Galician club's stance.

Alvaro Arbeloa reflects on his time as Real Madrid manager: 'I will always be grateful'
Former Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa is the subject of the first episode of the new season of Premier Corner by Guinness 0.0 on DAZN.

The Fulham coach discussed his move into English football and, above all, reaffirmed his enduring connection with Real Madrid, a bond that his move to London has only strengthened.

Despite the distance from the Spanish capital, Arbeloa made it clear that his heart remains at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Looking back on his spell as Real Madrid's first-team coach, Arbeloa didn't shy away from self-criticism, but spoke with gratitude about the experience.

"Coaching Madrid was a huge learning experience and a great experience. I wish it had gone better, for the club and the supporters, but things happened the way they happened," he admitted, as quoted by MARCA.

He then made clear that any assessment of that period comes second to his identity as a lifelong Madridista.

"I will always be grateful to Madrid. I'm a Madridista and I always will be. Even more so now that I also have a friend in the dugout managing the team."

That attachment goes far beyond his most recent spell as a coach.

"Madrid is the club of my life. I'll watch all their matches. I'm here thanks to Madrid. I've been involved with this club for more than 20 years, and it's something I'll always carry inside me," said Arbeloa, underlining how deeply Real Madrid remains embedded in him.

Gonzalo and Palacios fit his vision
Arbeloa also discussed the type of player he wants to build his project around at Craven Cottage, and two familiar names immediately came to mind.

"I like players who want to learn, work and demand a lot of themselves," he explained.

That profile perfectly describes Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios, the two Real Madrid academy graduates Arbeloa brought to Fulham this summer.

"They're two players with immense talent who share that personality, self-demand and ambition that I want in young players like them," he said.

A new life in London
Away from Madrid, Arbeloa also reflected on his new life in the Premier League, which he described as the most competitive and most followed league in the world.

What attracted him to Fulham, he explained, was the project and the ambition communicated by the club's owners. The idea is to build a young, hungry team capable of competing with an aggressive identity.

Arbeloa wants his side to be particularly intense without the ball, brave when pressing and willing to accept the risks that come with such an approach.

His first Premier League fixture already brought him up against Xabi Alonso's Chelsea, with the Basque coach coming out on top.

The unique stat that Sunderland will be looking to avenge against Fulham this weekend
Sunderland host Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.

It will be prime pub quiz question material in years to come: "Who were the only team to beat Sunderland twice during their long-awaited first campaign back in the Premier League?" Those with a short memory and a sensible disposition might be tempted to scribble down the usual suspects - Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool perhaps - but of course, the answer, somewhat bemusingly, is Fulham.

On Sunday, the Cottagers travel to the Stadium of Light with a unique distinction in their back pocket. While many confidently consigned Regis Le Bris' men to the role of top flight punchbags before a ball had so much as been kicked last term, one way or another, the Black Cats found the means of gazumping their way to at least one point against pretty much everybody in the division - except this weekend's visitors to Wearside.

Last November, down at Craven Cottage, Sunderland came unstuck at the death on a sodden afternoon as Raul Jimenez punished a momentary lapse in defensive wherewithal on the banks of the Thames. Three months later, back in the North East, and the Black Cats produced an uncharacteristically lacklustre home display as they limped their way to a 3-1 defeat. Again, Jimenez was the thorn in their side, netting a brace as Alex Iwobi put pay to any lingering hopes of an undeserved comeback late on.

Now, the good news from a Mackem perspective is that Jimenez - that sharpshooting nuisance in residence - has since left Fulham to return to Wolves, the club at which he first made his name in England. The bad news is that his replacement is already starting to look like a stellar alternative.

It wasn't so very long ago that Sunderland themselves were being linked with an ambitious swoop for Gonzalo Garcia, the Spanish youth international who clambered up through the ranks of Real Madrid's esteemed academy system and into a role on the periphery of the first team before being deemed surplus to requirements at the Bernabéu this summer. Following his departure, he opted to link up with former boss Alvaro Arbeloa in West London, and so far, it very much looks to be a mutually beneficial partnership. Two games have yielded two goals at a rate of one every 54 minutes, and the early signs are that Fulham have unearthed a real gem.

Behind him, Cesar Palacios has been keeping YouTube compilation makers busy all preseason long, and while the loss of Harry Wilson represents an obvious and sizeable blow, Fulham have retained a decent enough core of a squad that finished 11th last season - just two points adrift of Sunderland.

In the wake of Marco Silva's departure from the dugout, many onlookers tipped the Cottagers for a painful campaign and a possible scrap for survival. That, of course, may still come to pass; we are just one game into the new Premier League season, and Fulham lost it.

But Sunderland will no doubt be acutely aware of the threat their visitors could pose on Sunday, and if for whatever reason a reminder is needed, they only have to look as far back as last season and the anomalous headache their opponents from the capital caused them.

Five things to look out for when Fulham travel to Sunderland
Ben Jarman looks ahead to our trip to the Stadium of Light.

Phew! It feels like we've only just got out breath back from a breathless opening day against Chelsea, and now Fulham go again against Sunderland.

The performance at Craven Cottage against the Blues showed a lot of promise, but also some cracks that could harm Fulham throughout the season. A divisive performance? Maybe.

Putting aside conceding inside a minute, Fulham set out their stall early. And it's something that we expected with Arbeloa-ball: higher intensity pressing, covering ground and progressing the ball from the back via high wingbacks. Something I alluded to last week.

There will be some concerns that the defensive shape was so open, and that Fulham allowed the latter stages of the second half to become a basketball match.

Sunderland, though, present another opportunity to see this new-look Fulham as they look to secure their first Premier League points under Arbeloa.

The Mackems achieved European football last season at the first time of trying, and have drawn AC Milan, but they were humbled by new boys Ipswich on the opening day last time out. Here are five things to watch out for this weekend:

Aggressive Black Cats
This is the curtain-raiser at the Stadium of Light, and Sunderland will be hoping to right the wrongs of last week with three points.

Regis Le Bris has been vocal in his support of Sunderland switching from a counter-attacking side, into one comfortable in possession. Averaging 45% possession and just 297 completed passes per game last year, the Black Cats registered 64% and 240 passes in the first half against Ipswich – signalling their transition.

They took more shots, created more chances and registered a higher xG than their averages from last term. They pressed higher, and their midfield trio of Xhaka, Sadiki and Le Fee looked sharp creating a handful of chances for Brobbey, Hume and new signing Thomas Meunier.

Expect to see Xhaka and Sadiki look for quick bounce passes in wide areas to isolate full-backs and create one-on-ones, also look for Angulo to use his speed in wide areas.

Look for them to come out of the gate hot against Fulham.

Zero-in on centre-backs
Highlighting Sunderland's attacking capabilities should also come with a nod towards their defensive frailties.

Both of their goals against Ipswich came from cheap turnovers, and there is certainly an opportunity for Fulham to capitalise. Against Chelsea, we saw Bobb, Garcia and King winning the ball high-up the pitch and getting in behind, and it would be a surprise if we didn't see them zero-in on Dan Ballard and Luke O'Nein.

They were undressed by Enciso last weekend, and it certainly feels like there is a mistake in both should the Whites attackers exert the same pressure they put Lacroix, Acheampong and Levi Colwill under.

Outside of the centre-backs, look for Fulham to press in wide-areas, particularly on Sunderland's right, where Trai Hume is filling a hybrid role and can be left alone by his supporting cast at times. Expect Xhaka to have a lot of company as Fulham attempt to stop distribution from deep, too.

As it relates to Fulham, it's time to expect Joachim Andersen to return. Unfortunately for Jorge Cuenca, his season opened with a nightmare inside a minute and didn't get much better from there. He looked shaky and passive, and often isolated. It's a shame for a player that offered so much promise, and with such a great passing profile – but Arbeloa may now be looking towards the club captain to slide back in.

Character, mentality and pressing
In his pre-match press conference, Arbeloa nodded towards having the "same character, same mentality, that we did at home" – so we can expect a similar, high-octane performance as the one against Chelsea.

Last week we spoke about Josh King playing in a more advanced role – almost as a second striker – and Arbeloa has underlined the academy graduate's importance in the media this week too. He was one of, if not the stand out player last week; creating opportunities, closing and being the first man in the press. I can't wait to see him continue to grow as a player this season. Look for King to be the focal point of the press as Fulham try to engineer chances.

Gonzalo Garcia netted two in two games and has looked rambunctious leading the line. His work ethic has been instrumental in bringing the remainder of the team up the pitch to close space. His goal against Wimbledon, though, was a taste of things to come: the pure power, technique at speed and composure to finish from the wide angle certainly whet the appetite.

Outside of the two headline grabbers, there were a handful of other green shoots for Fulham: Oscar Bobb looked dangerous, good in transition – you always feel like something might happen when he gets the ball.

Alex Iwobi's transition into a midfield metronome is taking shape, and he has added some physicality to his game. Castagne and Berge also had a positive start to the campaign, but Berge can't be left alone as he was against Chelsea when we visit the Stadium of Light.

Smith Rowe or Palacios?
It could be too soon to be having this conversation, but after a good performance from ESR in the Carabao Cup and Arbeloa's comments about Palacios there could be a switch to the starting XI.

The ex-Real Madrid man had a strong start to his Fulham career, and there were certainly a lot of elements to like about his performance, but the manager noted that he may need more time to settle in. While not an explicit signal for change, perhaps the ex-Arsenal man's performance has prompted a discussion about who should be starting wide.

Smith Rowe has been a polarising character since his arrival in SW6, only showing flashes of the player who was given the famous number 10 for the Gunners, but there is still quality there. His ability to find pockets of space, and chip in with goals is not to be forgotten – like Palacios, he can also drift inside and interchange with King, Garcia or Bobb. Although Smith Rowe struggled last season, he looked sharp against the Dons and made a host of chances before bagging himself. You do wonder if he could start after 90 minutes just three days ago though...

Going up against the experienced Thomas Meunier on Sunday, perhaps Arbeloa might go for experience over youth... or play his joker and opt for Kevin out wide.

Fly Away on my Zepa
Following his impressive performance against AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup, will it be the first time we see Macaulay Zepa in a Premier League matchday squad? The 18-year-old shone on Thursday night for the Whites, registering his first assist and catching the eye of many.

His pace, trickery and creative eye making him an interesting prospect, and with some depth issues in wide areas, could Arbeloa consider making him a more permanent fixture around the squad?

Fulham in advanced negotiations for defender – Player's willingness pushes deal along
Fulham are moving to complete a late deal for Rayo Vallecano defender Andrei Ratiu before deadline day. The full-back has already approved the move.

Marca report that the Romanian defender may be spending his final days as a Rayo player as Fulham are in active negotiations to sign the 28-year-old.

Fulham are negotiating with Rayo over the defender. Talks between the two clubs are advanced and progressing well.

The player, for his part, is fully open to heading to the Premier League. In fact, Andrei Ratiu and Fulham have already reached an agreement. So, the next step lies with the two clubs, who are now working to finalise the deal.

Fulham look for definitive agreement
A definitive agreement between Fulham and Rayo is still pending but the player's willingness to move to Craven Cottage brings the deal closer.

Ratiu is ready to embark on a new chapter in England and Fulham want to make it happen. There is no mention of an asking price for the 28-year-old, though.

The right back is currently valued at €18m by Transfermarkt. The Spanish side paid €5.5m to sign him from Huesca thee years ago. A deal worth €20m+ is likely.

One in, one out?
It also remains to be seen if Fulham move somebody else on at right-back. Andrei Ratiu's arrival would leave them with three right-backs in the squad between Kenny Tete and Timothy Castagne as well.

The latter has been linked with a move away from Craven Cottage earlier in this window. His contract also expires in a year's time, so this summer is an ideal one in which to sell.

The arrival of Ratiu would allow Fulham to move him on without fear of leaving themselves short. Negotiations appear to be advancing, with the player's will to move to London already helping Fulham in that regard.

Fulham in talks for Rayo Vallecano defender Ratiu
Fulham are in talks to sign Romania defender Andrei Ratiu from Rayo Vallecano.

Talks are continuing over a deal for the 28-year-old, who is open to a move to Craven Cottage.

Alvaro Arbeloa's side are looking to strengthen in defence. Ratiu is primarily a right-back but is capable of playing in other positions.

Romania-born Ratiu has spent almost his entire club career in Spain since joining Villarreal's academy, apart from a loan spell at Dutch club ADO Den Haag.

He left Villarreal for Huesca before making his La Liga debut for Rayo Vallecano following his move in 2023.

Arbeloa, who replaced Marco Silva as Fulham boss this summer, is keen to add to his squad before Tuesday night's transfer deadline.

The Cottagers have signed striker Gonzalo Garcia and attacker Cesar Palacios from Real Madrid, along with midfielder Shea Charles from Southampton.

They have also made forward Jonah Kusi-Asare's loan move from Bayern Munich permanent.

Fulham are yet to make contact with Rayo Vallecano over right-back Andrei Ratiu, with any approach set to require the €25m release clause to prise him away from the Spanish side.

The 28-year-old has already opened his La Liga campaign with a defeat and a draw, with Rayo Vallecano still searching for their first victory of the season.

The Spanish defender started both fixtures, continuing where he left off last term after making 31 league starts and contributing to five goals.

Last summer, Ratiu drew Premier League interest, with Tottenham Hotspur eager to sign him, but Rayo Vallecano's decision to reject the move left the defender 'hurt and disappointed.'

Last month, English interest resurfaced, with Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest keeping a close eye on the Romanian right-back, who remains open to a move to the Premier League.

Now, with just days remaining before deadline day, Fulham have emerged as the latest club linked with an interest.

According to Spanish journalist Pablo Villa, however, direct contact has not yet been made between the Cottagers and the Madrid-based side to register their interest in Ratiu.

It is also understood that, should that call eventually come, his €25m release clause would be required to take him to Craven Cottage.

Ratiu recently signed a fresh contract in November, keeping him at the club until 2030, allowing Rayo Vallecano to hold firm over their star defender, who shone in the Conference League last season, including scoring against BK Hacken.

This year, however, Rayo Vallecano do not have European football, much like Fulham, meaning Ratiu may not have an overly difficult decision to make.

The decision now rests with the Cottagers, with Alvaro Arbeloa's side yet to make contact and just days remaining to either open talks or trigger the €25m release clause Rayo Vallecano are standing firm on.

Ahead of the West Londoners' visit to the Stadium of Light, are Sunderland prepared to avoid another Premier League loss?

Nine sides tasted defeat on Premier League opening weekend; two of them meet on Sunday hoping to dust off any memory of it. Sunderland will take on Fulham.

Lessons learned?
If there's one thing the Mackems loved last season, it was being out of possession. They were comfortable, calm, and more than happy to let an opponent come at them.

Ipswich Town flipped the script, settling into their shape, forcing Sunderland to keep hold of the ball, and waiting patiently for errors.

Lazy, under-hit passes were Sunderland's undoing at Portman Road. Possession was ceded cheaply by Luke O'Nien for Ipswich's first, and by Omar Alderete for their second.

Fulham will likely field Sander Berge, the savvy midfield operator known for his power when driving at defences. If Regis Le Bris' side are as loose on the ball as in their last outing, the Norwegian will be sure to punish them in transition.

Cottagers manager Alvaro Arbeloa isn't as dogmatically possession-based in his tactics as his compatriots. His defensive style is not oriented around winning and controlling the ball, but by filtering attacks through less dangerous channels with an intense press.

After a dismal display at the back against West London rivals Chelsea, Arbeloa will demand an improved showing - one that could leave Sunderland undone.

Against a side as flexible in possession and determined in a press as Fulham, the mackems must be watertight. The laissez-faire attitude on the ball we saw in Suffolk won't achieve anything.

Will new signings play a part?
Signed for £25 million in a lengthy transfer saga with Toulouse, left-back Dayann Methalie is a name that many are excited to see on the team-sheet.

Unfortunately, the 20-year-old Frenchman will have to wait to pull on a red-and-white shirt. Yellow cards in back-to-back games against Lyon and Strasbourg in Ligue 1 pushed Methalie over the suspension threshold.

The one-match ban has carried over despite the defender's move over the channel, and he will not be available for selection until next Saturday's trip to Brentford.

Meanwhile, Sunderland's latest arrival, Congolese youngster Jules Ahoka, is available.

The defensive midfielder - who ought to tighten Sunderland's occasional sloppy inclinations - arrived from Belgian side Royal Antwerp in a £8.5 million switch.

Ahoka is a relative unknown - far from a Granit Xhaka in his reputation - but so were Chemsdine Talbi and Noah Sadiki when they arrived from Belgium.

Team news
Sunderland will be without Simon Adingra as the Ivorian continues to fight an ankle injury sustained in preseason.

Left winger Romaine Mundle, goalkeeper Robin Roefs and striker Wilson Isidor will arrive on Sunday having each penned new contracts to remain at the Stadium of Light.

For Fulham, Tom Cairney remains sidelined with a knee injury, while it is also unlikely that Luc De Fougerolles will play. The Canadian centre-back picked up a knock after being on the wrong end of a nasty challenge against AFC Wimbledon.

The history of the fixture
Sunderland first faced Fulham in a 1935 FA Cup tie under Johnny Cochrane, a manager who would go on to deliver a league title to Wearside. The black cats emerged 3-2 winners.

When the sides met in the old First Division-era of British football, Sunderland typically came out on top. A run between 1979 and 1988 brought the mackems six consecutive victories in an unbeaten decade.

Since the breakaway of the Premier League, the tables have turned slightly.

In games after 1992, Fulham have ten wins to Sunderland's five in England's top flight. The cottagers are unbeaten in the fixture since 2017.

Last season, Marco Silva's whites took all six points from Regis Le Bris. Particularly bitter memories will be resurfacing of the last meeting at the Stadium of Light, in which Fulham emerged as decisive 1-3 winners.

Who has played for both sides?
Just 16 footballers have called both Fulham and Sunderland home, but some recognisable names stand out.

Former England international Darren Bent was a mackem from 2009-2011, and a cottager in the 13/14 season, on loan from Aston Villa.

Fulham advance talks to sign Andrei Ratiu, player approves move
Fulham are in advanced talks to sign Rayo Vallecano full-back Andrei Ratiu; the player has already given the green light to the move.

Andrei Ratiu has agreed personal terms with Fulham and is ready to join the Premier League club, with Fulham now working to complete a deal with Rayo Vallecano, according to a report by Spanish outlet MARCA.

Talks between Fulham and Rayo Vallecano are at an advanced stage, and significant progress has been made. Ratiu is understood to be completely open to the move and has already reached an agreement with the West London club; negotiations between the two clubs remain the key hurdle.

Fulham's pursuit of the Romanian full-back is complicated by Nottingham Forest, who contacted Rayo Vallecano in recent days to register their interest in the 28-year-old defender.

Why are Fulham interested in Ratiu?
The Cottagers' interest comes as manager Alvaro Arbeloa looks for an upgrade at right-back. Kenny Tete and Timothy Castagne provide experience and depth in the position, but neither has convinced Arbeloa to be their undisputed first choice going forward. Additionally, recent reports have linked Castagne with a move away Craven Cottage.

The 28-year-old could offer a different profile. Fulham see Ratiu's experience and attacking profile as valuable additions to their defensive core. His willingness to make the move has already removed one major obstacle, but Rayo Vallecano's approval remains essential.

Since joining the Spanish outfit in 2023, Ratiu has become an integral part of their first-team setup. Last season he featured in 50 matches, accumulating over 3,800 minutes and contributing towards five goals. His consistent performances have not gone unnoticed, with recent reports linking him with Leeds United.

He is an attack-minded full-back who can also feature as a winger when needed. Ratiu has all the skill set that the Spanish manager seeks in a new wide player. As a result, the Cottagers have stepped up their efforts. However, with Nottingham Forest now monitoring the situation, Fulham will be hoping their agreement with Ratiu helps prevent their rivals from hijacking the deal.

While the Tricky Trees will present a challenge, the Cottagers do have a significant advantage thanks to the player. However, it will be interesting to see if they can wrap up the deal before the window slams shut.

Matt Green previews trip to Fulham
Argyle Women come into Sunday's FAWNL clash against Fulham with a point to prove.

Having fallen to heavy defeat at Home Park against AFC Wimbledon last weekend, the Greens bounced back midweek in the FAWNL Cup, securing their first win of the season.

Now, the task for Matt Green's side is to take that momentum into the league, starting with their upcoming trip to high-flying Fulham.

Speaking on the midweek win, Green said: "I think it's a massive confidence booster, I said after the game the girls have worked so hard in pre-season and in the first couple of weeks of the season. To get that first win, especially after coming from behind in the game, I think it's massive.

"It shows them victories are achievable as a group. With a new squad, it's been highlighted a number of times, it's a younger squad with some experience in there. To get that first win under the belt, not just for the players but for the staff as well, it was really important.

"The longer you go without getting a win or a point on the board the pressure mounts. To get it in the league cup midweek just sets things up nicely, the girls have trained since then as well and you can tell there is a definite lift in the group from that result.

"It's a three-game week, so we have to quickly focus on the weekend as well.

"We will take that confidence into the weekend, we will go into every game trying to get the victory and fingers crossed we can try and get that first (league) win."

Fulham come into the game with two wins from two, they beat Portsmouth on the opening weekend and then put four past Real Bedford last Sunday.

It will be tough for Argyle to go to their patch and get a result, but Green is embracing the challenge ahead.

He said: "They're two from two; they beat Portsmouth on the opening weekend and got a good result last week against Real Bedford.

"They will be full of confidence, they're a good side, aggressive in their press, setup really well, got some good rotation patterns we have seen from the games we have watched back.

"It's another challenge, for us it's a challenge we'll embrace. We have done our homework, we will go there with a gameplan, and we will look, as always, to try and get a win."

Opposition Analysis: Can Sunderland Press The Issue Against Fulham?
It's Régis Le Bris versus Alvaro Arbeloa in the battle of the tactical gurus. Can we outwit the visitors from London?

Sunderland will begin their home league campaign against Fulham — a team that, last season, seemed to have our number.

However, with a new manager, you wonder how differently this Cottagers side will line up under new boss and former Real Madrid star Alvaro Arbeloa compared to that of Marco Silva's iteration of the West London side.

Fulham in profile: A summer of change in West London
Fulham finished eleventh in the 2025/2026 edition of the Premier League on fifty two points, and were the only side to do the double over Sunderland in the previous campaign.

Our opposition sold two of their star men in the summer: Raúl Jiménez to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Harry Wilson to Leeds United. However, the club have strengthened their forward line with the double signing of César Palacios and Gonzalo García from Real Madrid, as well as Shea Charles from Southampton.

The Cottagers' previous league game ended in a narrow defeat to West London rivals Chelsea, losing 2-3 on the night before bouncing back in the League Cup on Thursday night with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over fellow capital city club AFC Wimbledon.

Tactics and talking points
Under Arbeloa, Fulham play a highly vertical, fluid and adventurous brand of possession football.

Departing from the more cautious sideways recycling seen under Silva, Arbeloa's philosophy prioritises positional occupation, aggressive territorial gains and rapid vertical progression through the lines.

During goal kicks and first-phase build-up from the back, a defensive midfielder — most notably Sander Berge — drops between or alongside the split centre backs to form a temporary back three. A lone number six stays ahead of the back three to complete a '3+1' structure, acting as the primary anchor to bypass opposition pressure centrally.

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno is instructed to play short passes whenever possible, initiating the passing sequence rather than launching long balls, and the team sets up with extreme width aligned with the halfway line. High-flying wing-backs or inverted full-backs alternate responsibilities; one often pushes high into the wide channel while the other tucks inside into the midfield or defensive lines.

In possession, the shape morphs seamlessly from a 4-3-3 base into a 3-4-3 or a heavily attacking 3-2-5. Two attacking players position themselves permanently in the 'half-spaces' to ensure that all five vertical attacking lanes remain occupied.

While the structural zones are strict, the individual identities are not, and midfielders such as Alex Iwobi and Oscar Bobb are given the freedom to swap positions dynamically, overloading the flanks and confusing defensive blocks.

Rather than slowly circulating the ball, Fulham intentionally play short central combinations to draw the opponent's press forward. Once the opponent commits, they look for sharp, punchy, vertical passes directly through the central channel to split the defensive lines.

The system leans heavily on creative spark in advanced spaces — young midfielder Josh King operates with significant responsibility in the pocket, collecting line-breaking passes and quickly turning to feed inside forwards or striker Gonzalo García.

This creates an incredibly entertaining, chaotic game and by committing so many players forward into advanced zones to dominate territory, they look scintillating on the ball but remains highly susceptible to central counter-attacks if a pass is misplaced.

A Liverpool-inspired pressing system?
Out of possession, Arbeloa has organised Fulham into a high-intensity, aggressive Gegenpressing system heavily inspired by Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool.

Instead of employing the rigid, deep-lying mid-block occasionally seen under Silva, Arbeloa demands relentless energy to disrupt the opponent's build-up as close to their goal as possible.

Fulham initiate their high press using a structured, front-line approach nicknamed 'Salta'. Central strikers such as Gonzalo García or Rodrigo Muniz coordinate with an attacking midfielder such as Josh King to form a two-man front press.

Their immediate goal is to shadow and suffocate the opponent's deepest defensive midfielders, forcing opposing centre backs or the goalkeeper to play rushed, lower-percentage passes out wide.

They close down central corridors to channel the ball towards the touchlines, and once the opponent passes to a full-back or wide player, they trigger a collective squeeze with the winger, nearside central midfielder and high-pressing full back aggressively locking down the space and using the touchline as an extra defender to win the ball back deep in the opponent's half.

To support the forward press and remain compact, Fulham's back four positions itself very high up the pitch and centre backs including Calvin Bassey are required to step up physically and intercept direct passes before opposing forwards can turn.

Because full backs such as Antonee Robinson and Kenny Tete push incredibly highly to pin opponents down, they're given immense physical responsibility to track back and recover if the initial press is bypassed.

Also, because Fulham commit so many bodies forward both in possession and during counter-pressing phases, a heavy defensive burden falls on the lone number six such as Berge, who must screen the back four entirely on his own.

If an opponent possesses the technical security to pass clean through Fulham's initial press, the high defensive line leaves massive pieces of green grass behind it. This was evident in their chaotic 2-3 opening-day defeat to Xabi Alonso's Chelsea, where rapid positional switches exploited the vacant spaces before the defence could fully reset.

Both sides are hunting their first win of the campaign, and Sunderland must start strongly against a Fulham side that's deceptively quick on the ball.

Call me an optimist, but I feel as though we'll show our best at home and get that first win and put to bed some of the doubters amongst us.

I think the defensive errors from Ipswich will be addressed and we're a side who don't tend to lose many in succession, as shown last season.

Sky Sports' Lewis Jones has predicted a 1-1 draw, but also spent his entire piece on this game talking about Josh King with no reference to Sunderland, whereas our own sponsors LiveScore have predicted a 2-1 away win. Having a further look into other predictions, I was struggling to find one with a Sunderland win listed!

This seems like par for the course considering most pundits and sites predicting us for the relegation zone, so I'd take this all with a pinch of salt.

Fan Focus: What can Sunderland expect from Alvaro Arbeloa's Fulham side?
Ahead of today's match, we spoke to Fulham fan Jack Stroudley of the Fulhamish Pod to find out what we can expect!

Fulham lost Marco Silva to Benfica after 7 years in charge. Were fans disappointed to see him go after so much stability and success?

    I think it's a bit of both. Marco Silva was exceptional for Fulham, establishing us as a Premier League side after years of "yo-yoing".

    We did have a tenancy to drop-off when it mattered under Silva and last year particularly we felt that. Fans were after a change but I do wonder if this will be a case of be careful what you wish for.

The man to replace him was interim Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa. Although he played in the Premier League as a player, did that appointment surprise you given his lack of coaching experience both overall and in England?

    Honestly, I think everyone was a bit shocked by this one. I think one thing was apparent, Arbeloa was not first choice.

    It took us an eternity to bring a manager in and we were linked to a lot before Arbeloa's name entered the forefront.

Fulham began the season with a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea. How would you summarise the team's performance and did it leave you confident coming into this match?

    I think it's exactly how we expected it to go following pre-season. Fulham will be exciting and attacking going forward but leave a lot to be desired defensively.

    That's what panned out with swashbuckling, edge of your seat football to go alongside almost comical defending at times. I think we'll score a lot this year, I just worry how many we'll let in at the other end.

To start your summer transfers, Fulham made a double signing from Real Madrid in striker Gonzalo Garcia and midfielder César Palacios - how have they both looked in preseason and on their debuts?

    Garcia had the stronger of the two debuts. Throwing himself about, pressing absolutely everything and scoring a poacher-like goal to round out a decent day the office for him.

    Palacios was the one who impressed fans the most in pre-season with intricate passing and desire to always get on the ball. That fell short on Monday night and he often felt a bit too weak on the ball, bullied in possession and at times looking way out of his depth. I think he'll come good, he just needs time.

To add to that, Fulham signed Shea Charles in what was the most expensive deal ever for a Northern Irish player - what are you hoping he can bring to the table?

    Charles is a signing that excites me a lot.

    Fulham have needed bodies in midfield for what's felt like 2-3 years (ever since we lost Palhinha really) and Charles is the profile we should be signing.

    Strong in both boxes but also young enough to continue to develop.

One huge loss in the summer was Harry Wilson joining Leeds on a free transfer. Who do you think can step up in his place?

    At the time of writing we only have one right-winger at the club in Oscar Bobb who seems to be lacking confidence in-front of goal at the moment.

    We'll hopefully bring one more in but I think fans are hopeful we can start to see goals in other areas of the pitch to help replace this in the aggregate.

    Josh King should have a good year, Charles should add goals from deeper and we're hopeful Kevin will have a strong year after finding his feet at the end of last season.

Aside from your new signings, who are the Fulham players who you believe will cause Sunderland problems?

    Josh King was at the heart of all things great on Monday night and a goal off the bat will do wonders for his confidence.

    If he can get a foothold of the game, he'll dictate how Fulham go forward.

What style of play can Regis Le Bris' side expect to encounter from Arbeloa's team?

    Kamikaze football is the best way I'd describe what we've seen so far.

    Fulham will want lots of the ball and will want to press forward without any hesitation.

    This will leave us exposed in midfield and at the back though so I wouldn't be shocked if both sides had chances in abundance.

Are any players missing and who do you think will start the match?

    The only notable return from Monday night is Joachim Andersen who returns from suspension. There was encouragement on Monday, but I do think we'll make a few changes.

    I wasn't overly impressed with Sunderland last week, I thought Ipswich took the game to you and limited chances.

    That being said, Stadium of Light is a tricky place to go and you'll be desperate to get a win and alleviate any pressure. I'm going with a draw, 1-1.

Everton agree Kenny Tete personal terms as Fulham line up replacement
Everton have agreed personal terms with Kenny Tete as they step up their attempts to finally land a new right-back before the transfer deadline.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Saturday evening that an agreement is in place between the Blues and the 30-year-old, with the deal now dependent on Everton and Fulham finding common ground.

There is movement at Craven Cottage, too.

Fulham talks add intrigue to Tete situation
Fulham are in talks with Rayo Vallecano over Romania international Andrei Rațiu, who Romano described as a potential replacement for Tete.

Reports elsewhere suggest those negotiations are already advanced, with Rațiu also understood to be open to the move.

It potentially clears a path for Everton, although there is still an important hurdle to overcome. There has been no suggestion yet that a fee has been agreed for Tete and neither club has confirmed a deal.

What Everton do appear to have, however, is the player's agreement.

That represents significant progress in a position Moyes has been keen to strengthen this summer.

Tete has been at Fulham since joining from Lyon in 2020 and brings considerable Premier League experience. He would also provide a natural senior option on the right of Everton's defence after a summer in which several possibilities have been considered.

The Netherlands international was on Everton's radar last year before ultimately remaining at Craven Cottage, but the circumstances now appear to have changed.

With personal terms reportedly settled and Fulham working on a deal for another right-back, there is a clear route towards a transfer.

The final piece is now the most important one: whether Everton and Fulham can reach an agreement before Tuesday's deadline.

Sunderland and Fulham are in for a late battle to sign AS Roma's Matías Soulé.

That's according to Sunday's edition of Corriere della Sera. They cover Sunderland and Fulham's interest when reporting the latest on the Serie A side's potential movements before Tuesday's deadline.

Sunderland and Fulham already made contact
Last month, we relayed news the 23-year-old's agent had a meeting with the Premier League duo.

The Black Cats or the London club haven't made firm advances to close this operation yet.

On August 21st, Sport Witness covered a report from Italy explaining that Régis Le Bris' side made fresh contact to sign Matías Soulé. The Giallorossi are valuing him between €35-40m.
