Fulham and Schalke bid for Manninger

Juventus will release Alexander Manninger and the goalkeeper is considering offers from England and Germany.

The 33-year-old Austrian shot-stopper is out of contract at the end of the season and considered the third choice in Turin behind Gigi Buffon and Marco Storari.

Up until now, Manninger was expected to make a return to the Premier League with Fulham, where he had already played for Arsenal earlier in his career.

This weekend another proposal is said to have come in from Bundesliga side Schalke 04.

They need a replacement for Manuel Neuer, who is expected to join Bayern Munich.

Kevin Doyle among five Republic of Ireland players sent home as Wolves striker fears his season may be over

By Sportsmail Reporter

Last updated at 2:15 PM on 27th March 2011

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has rewarded his senior players for their efforts in last night's 2-1 Euro 2012 qualifier victory over Macedonia by sending them home.

Skipper Robbie Keane, Kevin Kilbane, Richard Dunne, Damien Duff and the injured Kevin Doyle have all been withdrawn from the squad for Tuesday night's friendly against Uruguay at the Aviva Stadium.

Wolves striker Doyle was today due to undergo scans on the medial ligament he damaged last night with initial examinations suggesting his domestic season could be effectively over.

However, despite dispensing with the services of he and Keane - after losing Leon Best to injury earlier in the week and with Jon Walters not now joining up after the birth of his son - Trapattoni is yet to call up any replacements.

He has, however, put Celtic's Anthony Stokes and CSKA Sofia's Cillian Sheridan on stand-by.

US 1-1 v the Argies.  Good result I imagine.

U.S. Midfielder CLINT DEMPSEY

On if the United States gave Argentina too much respect:

"It was difficult because we really wanted to keep possession, so that means we were having to run a lot. So when we did get the ball, players were a little bit tired and might have been careless a few times with the ball. That didn't help us because it put us right under the gun again. I thought in the second half things opened up a little bit more and we were able to affect them more on the counter-attack. At the end, it was like anybody could have got the game. We're happy with the result, but we would have liked to have had more possession and we would have liked to create more chances, but that's the way it goes sometimes."

The new third shirt looks pretty nifty, too.

Gerrard: Fulham skipper Murphy left Liverpool too soon

28.03.11 | tribalfootball.com

Steven Gerrard says Danny Murphy left Liverpool too soon.

The Fulham captain has enjoyed an outstanding last two years at Craven Cottage.

Gerrard told Goals on Sunday: "I think Danny left the club too soon.

"I think he had the ability to play for a few more years - maybe not every week because at Liverpool you have three or four top players in every position."

Juan Agudelo, the real deal?

by Paul Kennedy, March 28th, 2011 1:28AM

With his tying goal in the USA's 1-1 tie with Argentina on Saturday night, 18-year-old Juan Agudelo has been anointed the next great scoring hope of American soccer. Two other recent great scoring hopes -- Jozy Altidore and Eddie Johnson -- also got off to fast starts for the USA but their careers stalled when they both moved to Europe in 2008. Will Agudelo be different?

The bottom line is that it's entirely too soon to make projections about Agudelo's career. He has only three appearances for the U.S. national team -- each as a second-half sub -- and has played only three regular-season games for MLS's New York Red Bulls.

He has shown a knack for finding the goal -- goals in the win at South Africa in his U.S. debut in November and against Argentina, and a penalty kick earned against Chile and converted by Teal Bunbury for the tying goal in January.

The pressure will be on Agudelo sooner than it was on either Johnson or Altidore. Both had starred in Under-20 World Cups for the USA before making their senior debuts. It's likely Agudelo will skip 2011 Under-20 World Cup in Colombia and go to the 2011 Gold Cup instead.

But while Altidore and Johnson relied more on their size and speed, respectively, Agudelo is better on the ball than either of them and better prepared than either of them for the challenge ahead on a national team struggling to find its way since the 2010 World Cup.

In each of his three brief appearances, the USA was better for having Agudelo on the field -- goals or no goals -- which is reason enough to put him in the lineup.

Before we go overboard, though, it's important to remember how hot Altidore and Johnson were when they started and where they are now.

JOZY ALTIDORE. Like Agudelo, Altidore made his U.S. debut against South Africa in the Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup. He was 18 when he earned his first cap in November 2007 but by then he had a rather lengthy resume.

He had debuted for the Red Bulls the previous year when he scored three goals in their run to the playoffs. In 2007, he had nine goals in 22 MLS regular-season games and added four goals in five games for the USA at the Under-20 World Cup in Canada. The next year he set a record for the youngest player to score for the USA during the modern era when he scored against Mexico in a friendly.

Altidore's move from the Red Bulls to Villarreal in 2008 was valued at an MLS record $10 million, but he has been a disappointment so far in Europe, where he has failed to crack the Villarreal starting lineup and been loaned out three times.

Jozy finished as the leading U.S. scorer in 2010 World Cup qualifying with six goals but failed to score in four games in South Africa. His biggest goal for the USA came a year earlier when he scored the first goal in its 2-0 win over Spain in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup.

Altidore is prized for his size in the manner of hulking forwards favored by many big European clubs, but his poor technique has limited his effectiveness.

EDDIE JOHNSON. Before Altidore, Johnson was the great U.S. scoring hope. He was the leading scorer on the first U.S. under-17 national team that had spent its entire cycle in residency and won the Golden Shoe as the top scorer at the 2003 Under-20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

He debuted with the Dallas Burn at the age of 17 in 2001 but finished in double digits in goals only twice in seven seasons with Dallas and Kansas City before moving to Fulham in England in a deal valued at $6 million in 2008.

Johnson was 20 when he made his U.S. debut in October 2004 and like Agudelo scored coming off the bench in his U.S. debut. His streak of goals in each of his first four international matches is a U.S. record. He had six goals in those four games, all 2006 World Cup qualifiers. Unfortunately, he's had only six goals in 38 matches since then and he has faded from the national team picture.

Like Altidore, Johnson has been loaned out in each of his last three seasons. Now at last-place Preston North End in the English second tier, Johnson turns 27 on Thursday and faces an uncertain future.

One of the fastest players to ever play for the U.S. national team, Johnson has improved little in recent years. Unlike Altidore, who has at times been an effective target man, Johnson hasn't linked well with his U.S. teammates.

Konchesky set for Fulham return after Liverpool nightmare

Mar 27 2011 by Dean Jones, The People

PAUL KONCHESKY is returning to Fulham at the end of the season – bringing an end to his Liverpool nightmare.

The full-back joined Roy Hodgson at Anfield last year in a bid to take his career to the next level, but it went horribly wrong.

Fans at Anfield never rated him, his performances were poor, and his mum made sure there was no way back when she posted anti-Scouse remarks on Facebook.

He is now on loan at Nottingham Forest but talks have taken place between Fulham and Liverpool and he is set to head back to Craven Cottage in June for around £1.5million.

It's a great bit of business by Fulham, as they sold him for just over £3m only seven months ago.

The switch is ideal for manager Mark Hughes, who will need a new left back as Carlos Salcido is hoping to return to Mexico after just one season in the Premier League.

Sparky is planning to find a new right back as well when the transfer window reopens as John Pantsil's contract will not be renewed.

Also looking set to leave Anfield is striker Dani Pacheco, a Spain Under-21 international on loan at Norwich. He said: "It's obvious that all the Spaniards are leaving Liverpool."

Fulham, Bolton target Klose prepares for Bayern Munich exit

26.03.11 | tribalfootball.com

Bayern Munich veteran striker Miroslav Klose wants to play in the top-flight next season.

Klose, who has been linked with Fulham, Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United this season, is leaving Bayern in the summer.

"I can imagine playing for anybody at a high level," he told the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

"I am fit, football is no torture or drag for me and I don't just want to play out the end of my career in any old place.

"At the moment, I still want to play at a level which is higher than Kaiserslautern."

Dalglish to beat rivals to signing of Wigan star James McCarthy

Mar 27 2011 by Alan Nixon, The People

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish wants to beat Chelsea to the signing of Wigan star James McCarthy – the one who got away from Anfield.

Dalglish is determined to land Glasgow-born Ireland starlet McCarthy as part of a major summer overhaul.

And the legendary manager thinks that he can persuade McCarthy to pick Merseyside ahead of London for his next move, which looks increasingly likecoming at the end of the season.

Desperation

Chelsea wanted to land McCarthy in January and are still in the chase for him – although the exit of director of football Frank Arnesen leaves a question mark over their desperation for him.

Now Dalglish, poised to get theLiverpool job full-time, has decided to home in on McCarthy who was set to sign for former boss Rafa Benitez as a kid but opted to stay with Hamilton Accies.

McCarthy has already been to Liverpool's HQ and played in a training game – when he was just 16 – and Benitez was keen to take him only for the top prospect to decide that first-team football with Hamilton was better.

Dalglish does not want to miss out on McCarthy again and thinks he would be ideal for a new-look squad that would also include fellow Scot Charlie Adam from Blackpool. McCarthy signed for Wigan and has proved himself to be one of the best young all-round midfielders in the top flight. Chelsea are willing to pay up to £7million for him.

Liverpool will match and possibly better that if Dalglish gets the money to invest.

And he hopes the quiet lad will prefer to stay in the area rather than be drawn to the capital.

McCarthy has forged close friendships with some of the Latics team and may be happier to remain in the north west, which is also closer to his tight-knit family home in Glasgow. Wigan and Fulham have been watching Spanish striker Joaquin Alvarez, aka Quini.

Quini, 30, plays for Alcorcon in the Spanish Second Division where he leads the goalscoring charts with 17. The striker is valued around £650,000.

But the club's poor crowds and financial state means he could be available for around half that amount.

●DARLINGTON boss Mark Cooper is on Port Vale's radar as they search for Jim Gannon's replacement.

The former Peterborough chief is only on a one-year deal at the Arena and would jump at the chance.

Schwarzer eyes Germany scalp

10Comments and replies28 March 2011-AAP

Full of confidence ... Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is ready for Germany (Getty)

Mark Schwarzer has called on Australia to replicate its giant-killing deeds of the past in its clash with heavyweight Germany.

The manner in which the European side dismantled the Socceroos 4-0 at last year's World Cup in South Africa has many fearing another shellacking for Australia in Monchengladbach on Tuesday evening (Wednesday morning AEDT).

But veteran goalkeeper Schwarzer said wins over the Netherlands and England on their soil proved the Socceroos were capable of upsetting the World Cup semi-finalist at Borussia Park.

"That is always going to be a tough order," Schwarzer said.

"But we have done it before, we have gone to Holland and beaten the Dutch in their backyard (2-1, Eindhoven in 2008) and we have beaten England on their home ground (3-1, Upton Park in 2003).

"Nobody expected us to do both of those results so we are going to go in their with the confidence and belief in our own ability."

The Socceroos have been done a favour by German coach Joachim Low who has picked an experimental side following the 4-0 home win over Kazakhstan in a Euro 2012 qualifier - its fifth straight victory of a campaign in which it has racked up 17 goals.

Low has released Mesut Ozil, who so tormented the Socceroos in Durban and stars Sami Khedira and captain Philipp Lahm from the squad.

Lukas Podolski, who also troubled Australia last June is expected to sit out the match, the problem being that his replacement Andre Schurrle is one of the Bundesliga's form strikers.

With Lahm rested, Bayern Munich's Bastian Schweinsteiger is expected to captain the side and striker Miroslav Klose, who scored twice against Kazakhstan, should start up front as he looks to add to his 61 goals.

Klose is just seven goals from equalling Gerd Mueller's record 68 goals in 62 games that has stood for more than 30 years.

In an insight into the high expectations Germans reserve for their national team, they booed their side in Kaiserslautern on the weekend for not pressing on in the second half after opening up a 3-0 half-time lead.

Schwarzer, whose parents moved to Australia from Germany four decades ago, said the home fans could aid Australia's cause.

"Knowing what the German mentality is like and knowing what the German fans demand of their team they will be expected to win the game comfortably at home," he said.

"From our point of view we know what we are up against, we knew that in South Africa.

"Unfortunately we did not match that with our performance."

Schwarzer said that result, which derailed Australia's World Cup campaign, remained an ugly memory and the players were determined to make a better account of themselves.

"It was a very bitter blow and a very harsh lesson to learn," he said.

"Hopefully we have learnt a lot from it and improve on it and in the future those results and those performances won't happen to us."

With Tim Cahill injured, Robbie Kruse is a chance of his first start for the Socceroos after impressing off the bench during the AFC Asian Cup campaign.

However Socceroos coach Holger Osieck may opt to shift Brett Holman into Cahill's role just behind the main striker with Matt McKay playing on the left flank.

Dempsey Shines

Monday 28th March 2011

Fulham's Clint Dempsey played an influential part as the US came back from a goal behind to draw one-all with Argentina in an international friendly at New Meadowlands Stadium. The game was played in front of a record crowd of 78,936.

Argentina were inspired by the sparking form of Lionel Messi but an equally outstanding display from US goalkeeper Tim Howard helped keep the game within the grasp of Bob Bradley's team.

Speaking after the encounter, Dempsey looked back on an entertaining match.

"It was difficult because we really wanted to keep possession, so that means we were having to run a lot," he said. "So when we did get the ball, players were a little bit tired and might have been careless a few times with the ball.

"That didn't help us because it put us right under the gun again. I thought in the second-half things opened up a little bit more and we were able to affect them more on the counter-attack.

"At the end, it was like anybody could have got the game. We're happy with the result, but we would have liked to have had more possession and we would have liked to create more chances, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

"It's a friendly. Take it for what it's worth. You just go out there and try to get as sharp as you can for the Gold Cup. That's the most important thing right now. We have to fine-tune some things, and I think it's a chance for Bob Bradley to see what team he wants to take and make sure we're sharp going into that tournament."

N.Ireland lose key duo

Hughes & Lafferty join Davis on the sidelines

By Pete O'Rourke - Follow me on Twitter @skysportspeteo

Hughes: Shoulder problem

Northern Ireland captain Aaron Hughes and striker Kyle Lafferty have been ruled out of this week's Euro 2012 qualifier with Slovenia.

Hughes suffered a shoulder injury in Friday's 2-1 defeat to Serbia, while Rangers forward Lafferty injured his knee in the same game.

The duo join Rangers midfielder Steven Davis on the sidelines after he failed to recover from the hamstring injury that forced him to miss the Serbia defeat.

With David Healy suspended and Lafferty ruled out, Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington has drafted in Millwall striker Josh McQuoid.

Worthington admitted the loss of Hughes, who has not missed a competitive game since September 2007, was a major blow to the side.

"Aaron didn't travel to Belfast with us on Saturday, instead he got a flight to London for a scan on his shoulder and it revealed some damage," Worthington told the Belfast Telegraph.

"Fulham are going to let it settle for a few days before seeing if the problem needs some further work, but his absence is, of course, a big blow for us."

Hughes admits he knew something was up with his shoulder, amid fears he could face several weeks on the sidelines.

"I felt something pop back in, so I assume that it had to come out to go back in," noted Hughes.

Lafferty revealed he had been struggling with the knee injury before the Serbia game and that his gamble on his fitness backfired on him.

"I had been training with it and I don't think I should have been playing, but I gave it a go and it backfired," said Lafferty.

Konchesky set to return to previous club

by Anfield Online | Monday 28th March 2011 | @jd77

Liverpool's Paul Konchesky, currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, is set for a £1.5M return to Fulham in June.

The loan deal at Premiership-chasing Nottingham Forest expires on the 31st May, meaning that if Forest do qualify for the play-offs, Konchesky will be unavailable for their final push for the Premier League.

Konchesky cost the reds £3M plus two promising youngsters Lauri Dalla-Valle and Alex Kakaniklic, when Roy Hodgson brought him to Anfield.

Paul was almost immediately shipped out of the club following Kenny's appointment and Damien Comolli is tasked with finding a replacement as one of his top summer priorities.  Liverpool's left back slot is arguably the weakest area in the team, with only one recognised left back at Melwood – the injury prone Fabio Aurelio.  Newcastle's Jose Enrique is considered the most likely target for Liverpool, having proven experience in the Premier League, and topping a fans poll at St James Park for last years Player of the Season, ahead of the £35M Andy Carroll.

Martin Kelly, Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger and Danny Wilson have all attempted to fill Aurelio's injury filled void following Konchesky's loan, but for each of them it is not their preferred position.

Liverpool will look upon the £1.5M sale as good business – given that Hodgson had handed the player, who turns 30 in May,  a lucrative 4 year contract.

Phillips has also impressed since spending more time on camera than he has on the pitch at Birmingham.

Holloway excited by Michael Jackson statue

Michael Jackson

Published on Monday 28 March 2011 12:44

POOL'S trip to Fulham on Sunday could be interesting in more ways than one – the home fans are staging a demonstration against owner Mohamed Al Fayed's statue of Michael Jackson outside the ground.

But while the idea has gone down like a lead balloon with many Fulham supporters, there is one man looking forward to it ... Ian Holloway.

In one of the more surreal developments of the season, Al Fayed announced his tribute to the late pop star, who was a personal friend, and the statue is set to be unveiled on Sunday.

But given that Jackson had nothing to do with the football club – though Al Fayed did invite him to watch a Second Division victory over Wigan in 1999 – it hasn't gone down well with all supporters.

Hundreds of fans have signed a protest petition and a demonstration is planned on Sunday. However, Holloway is looking forward to seeing the statue and may even take a photograph of it.

"I can't wait, because love or loathe him Jacko is one of those iconic figures," said the Pool boss, who likes his music.

"I know some fans are grumbling about the statue but I think it is terrific.

"He was a very special bloke and one of a handful of people I am proud to have been on the planet at the same time as.

"The Beatles, Elvis, Muhammad Ali... they are the great figures of our age. David Beckham will be one day too. They are icons.

"I've got a model of Ali at home, back when he was Cassius Clay, in that famous pose over a prostrate Sonny Liston. It's one of my most treasured possessions and if I could get one of Jackson, I would. In fact, when we go to Fulham I'll take a little hacksaw, smuggle the statue on the team bus and take it home with me.

"Mind you, what if it does go missing now? They will be straight round to my house. It's not me, Mr Fayed. I won't nick it, honest!"

Holloway would do well to smuggle it on to the coach unnoticed. The statue is six feet tall and will show Jackson with ammunition belts strapped across his chest and with what appear to be underpants over his trousers.

The pop icon will join Fulham Fifties footballing legend Johnny Haynes as the only two club "figures" immortalised at the stadium.

Fans have complained that Mr Fayed is using Craven Cottage as a "dumping ground for his weird statue", which will make Fulham a "laughing stock".

Wing Man

Monday 28th March 2011

The Republic of Ireland moved joint top of their Euro 2012 qualifying group with Slovakia and Russia after securing a hard-fought 2-1 win over Macedonia at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

Damien Duff continued his excellent Club form with an impressive attacking display from the right wing and, speaking after the match, the Fulham man was clearly pleased to have helped secure a vital win for his country.

"I was cramping after an hour, showing what a shift we had to put in," he said. "There's no easy games in Europe anymore. Macedonia put up a great fight but it's a massive three points.

"We believe we can do it. We went close to the last World Cup and we're going to put in a big effort to get to Ukraine and Poland.

"We have to make this [the Aviva Stadium] a fortress like Lansdowne Road used to be and this result goes a long way to that."

Blackpool skipper Adam dismisses injury fears

28.03.11 | tribalfootball.com

Blackpool skipper Charlie Adam has played down an injury scare suffered in action for Scotland against Brazil.

Adam suffered an injury scare in the second half after hurting his knee making a challenge but he insisted it was nothing serious and was hopeful of being fit for Blackpool's crucial Barclays Premier League game at Fulham next Sunday.

"I just got a whack on it as I went to make a tackle," he said.

"We clashed knees but I'll be all right and hopefully be ready for the weekend."
