Spot on. The English media and press hype it up so much, the players actually begin to believe their own press.
Best example over the years, Terry. He really believes he is a footballer and not a thuggish centre half.

Every single time the world cup is on we have a "golden generation" of players who are expected to do well.

Every single time the reality falls well short of the hype.

We don't have enough England players getting regular first team outings in the top teams, the last few managers we have had have not been up to the job, and as the players only have a few weeks together a year then that is not conducive to being world-beaters.

I would throw Leighton baines into the hat. He's been brilliant this season. Should be at his peak by the European championships if not the world cup.
