Hughes plans Bentley reunion at Fulham

01:00 PM 26 April, 2011

Fulham Football Club will bid for David Bentley in the summer.

Mark Hughes knows the midfielder as well as anybody, having perhaps got the best football out of the midfielder during their time together at Blackburn Rovers.

Since leaving Ewood Park for Tottenham Hotspur in 2008, Bentley's career has nosedived, and he is currently struggling to make an impact on loan at Birmingham City.

The 26-year-old is due back at White Hart Lane in the summer, where he has two years left on his contract, but Harry Redknapp is hoping to offload him permanently.

And it is believed Hughes is prepared to offer the England international, who has seven caps, a move to Craven Cottage, if he can secure his signature for around £6million.

I know lots of people werent too keen when we were linked with him in the summer, but if Hughes can get him playing like he was at Blackburn it will be a quality signing.

I think this is a big if.

Whilst he would no doubt add some danger to our set pieces, he does lack pace and £6m is a lot for a set piece specialist.

How has he got on at Birmingham? Doesnt seem to be doing too much to justify getting excited.

I was thinking this morning about how players we were linked with but didn't get in January have got on since - Bentley can't be doing a lot as they're in a poor league position (was he cup-tied?) and Keane has only scored 3 (?) times for the cheats, who again aren't in a great league position. Who else was there?

Here's the January round-up. I got sick of it by 20th January so missed off a few at the end of the month, including Bentley -

In fairness, Birmingham are very negative when they play so he's hardly going to set the world alight their. Wouldn't mind Bentley myself.

I wouldnt say Hleb is a bad player, having played for Arsenal and Barca, and he's not exactly set the world alight at Brum! (Worth a cheeky bid!?)

Same goes for Sidwell at Villa.

I think that ,as people have mentioned already, when you're down the bottom of the table, there is less room for the more flair players to play.

For me Bentley would be good. Plus, he can take a set piece. Which none of our players seem capable of! (Minus Zamora's classic free kick to the keepers side of the wall)

I'M not too sure about that. Yes, Bentley is a good crosser and a decent passer of the ball. But would he suit our overall approach? Wage demands?

Do not like Rednapps treatment of players. He goes public too often. Unlike Ferguson, who keeps quiet until the player is unloaded. Bentley, decent for Fulham but if the rumour gathers momentum would suggest Dempsey might be off somewhere for a barrow full of money.

I would prefer to see Fletcher from Wolves. If you can score for crap teams like Burley and Wolves, looks like a good prospect.

But Fletcher is a striker, Bentley is a winger!...and a car, tbh

He was available on the cheap from Burnley and I had hoped we would get him as cover for Zamora, our season may have been a bit smoother then!

manxman

Yes please, would suit our style of play well. Plus he is only 26 ! I thought he was much older... At least he's under 30 haha

I was also on that bandwagon, Mr. AFC. I like Fletcher's game and attitude.

As for the possibility of us signing Bentley --  :011: :011: :011: :011: :011: :011: :011: :011:

Ireland might not sign a permanent deal with Newcastle due to another injury. Do you think Mark will revisit that one?
