Mark Hughes fires Fulham transfer warning

By Jacob Murtagh

May 5 2011

MARK Hughes has warned Fulham fans he won't splash the cash in the transfer market this summer.

The Whites boss has been linked with a £12million move for Espanyol striker Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, but faces competition from Manchester United, Spurs and Everton for the Argentina-born Italian's signature.

And he has told supporters that the Whites can't compete with some of Europe's big guns when it comes to spending power.

He said: "We are looking with a view to next year and if we can add quality then we will try and do that.

"It is price sensitive. Sometimes you can want to bring a good player in but financially you can't afford to do that."

The Whites look on course for a top-10 finish despite a slow start to the season when they were flirting around the drop zone.

However, the return to fitness of Mousa Dembele and Bobby Zamora has seen Fulham turn into a force to be reckoned with in the second-half of the season.

And Hughes insists there won't be major changes at Craven Cottage over the summer.

"It won't be a massive overhaul," he added. "We have a good squad and have a good basis to keep moving forward."

Airfix

Less worried about "big" spending than "no" spending.  So long as we keep our best and add to them in a measured way, we can expect to progress from this season.

The reality of the Premiership is that if one doesn't improve the squad year on year one goes backwards, so hopefully some judicious additions.

The manager is required to say this around this time every year - rarely has an effect on how much we do spend. To be fair, we don't really need to spend huge amounts PROVIDED we keep the squad we have, minus the deadwooders (Saffer, Mummy's Little Boy et al).

Time will tell.

It's never smart to advertise that you have money to spend.

Agree with this and Tony's comments. We really don't need to spend much we have a quality side already barring injuries to BZ will be top 10 next year. Keep Eidur, find maybe a youngish Kakuta type on loan for impact and maybe a legit backup to Murphy and we are fine.

Really a new angle story............really who cares we hear this every year - no manager no signings

"You don't want to be trapped inside with me sunshine. Inside, I'm somebody nobody wants to love with do you understand?

Tom

We need to spend money wisely on quality players.
Fulham for life!

Rupert

I suggest that this is more for the benefit of those we will seek to buy players from. We want to add to the quality of the squad but we will not spend stupid amounts of money on half-decent players (we hope). This may be necesary since many clubs will recall the amounts Sparky spent whilst Man City manager and might assume that Chairman Mo has been generous with his Harrods windfall.
Any fool can criticise, condemn and complain, and most fools do.
