Hughes hopes to keep Gera
Fulham boss also confirms Pantsil is set to move on in the summer

Mark Hughes remains hopeful Zoltan Gera will decide to stay at Fulham, but confirmed John Pantsil is likely to leave the club.

Gera is out of contract in the summer and marked what could be his final appearance for the club by being sent off in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
The versatile Hungary international has previously suggested he is likely to quit Craven Cottage in search of regular first-team football elsewhere.

However, Hughes is keeping his fingers crossed that Gera's Fulham career does not end on the low of the red card against Arsenal.

Disappointed

Hughes said: "We are still hopeful he will decide to stay here.

"We would be very disappointed if his Fulham career ended on that note. We hope that's not the last we see of him here.

"Zolly may feel he will get more opportunities elsewhere, but ideally we would like him to stay."

Hughes, though, accepted there would be changes over the summer, with Ghanaian full-back Pantsiltipped to move on after not playing for Fulham since February.

"The likelihood is that John Pantsil will leave the club," added Hughes.

"We are trying to freshen up the squad and the view is that we can look at other alternatives."

Fulham wait on Europa League after Zoltan Gera red card

Mark Hughes hopes Zoltan Gera's red card will not cost Fulham the chance of a place in Europe next season as the Hungarian left Craven Cottage for what could be the last time after being sent off in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

England are set to be handed an additional place in the Europa League qualifiers via UEFA's Fair Play League, which with both Chelsea and Tottenham already in Europe could see Fulham given the opportunity.

However, with the final rankings not calculated until factors from yesterday's season-ending games - such as UEFA delegates reports on attitudes towards referees and crowd behaviour - are taken into consideration as well as on-field disciplinary matters, Fulham face an anxious few days before they will discover if they have stayed ahead of relegated Blackpool to be in contention.

Gera was shown a straight red card for a two-footed lunge at Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen just minutes after having come on as a substitute.

Hughes, though, remains optimistic Fulham's first such incident of the season will not have a major role to play.

"I am hopeful it won't have too much impact because it's factored over 38 games," said Hughes, who guided the Cottagers safely up the Barclays Premier League table following a difficult start to his Fulham career.

"Eighth is some achievement and European football counts as an outstanding season.

"We need to find out one way or another. We will back in three weeks once we know.

"European football can help when you try to attract players to your club, so there is an intention and will to do well in the competition."

Hungary midfielder Gera, 32, could have played his last game for Fulham as he is out of contract, but Hughes added: "Zolly may feel he will get more opportunities elsewhere, but ideally we would like him to stay.

"We would be very disappointed if his Fulham career ended on that note."

Hughes, though, accepted there would be changes to the playing staff over the summer, with men like Ghana international John Pantsil set to leave.

"We are trying to freshen up the squad and the view is that we can look at other alternatives," said the Fulham boss.

Steve Sidwell had swept Fulham in front on 26 minutes, only for Robin van Persie to quickly equalise with his ninth consecutive away goal.

Bobby Zamora nodded the Cottagers back into the lead just before the hour ahead of Gera's dismissal - but a late goal from Theo Walcott earned Arsenal a point as they finished fourth behind FA Cup winners Manchester City.

Zamora may well be in contention for another England chance in the Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland in June, but Hughes feels the striker needs more recovery having just returned from injury and going off late on yesterday.

"I don't think he is ready for any games at the end of the season," said Hughes.

"Bobby needs a full pre-season and once Premier League is starting again I would imagine he would be very much in the England manager's mind."

Fulham End of Season Report: Mark Hughes Sneaks Quietly into Top Ten

FULHAM
Finished: 8th
FA Cup: lost 5th round
Carling Cup: lost 3rd round

The highlight: The first two weeks of February in which they beat Tottenham 4-0 in the FA Cup and held Chelsea to a 0-0 draw.
The lowlight: The Michael Jackson statue unveiling before the Blackpool game. At a cost of £100,000, it looked like an oversized objet d'art from the back of a crossword magazine.

The lowdown: Expectations were high last summer after Roy Hodgson had taken Fulham all the way to the Europa League final in the 2009-10 season. Hodgson had of course moved on to his ill-fated and brief spell at Liverpool, with Mark Hughes having arrived as manager at Craven Cottage.

They were relatively quiet in the summer transfer market, with Mexican fullback Carlos Salcido and Belgian Mousa Dembele the major Hughes acquisitions. After all, the team Hodgson left behind had made it to the club's first-ever European final as well as ending the Premier League season in mid-table comfort.

Hughes said from the beginning that he thought his side to be worthy of a top ten place – but those aspirations took a severe blow on September 11, in just the fourth game of the season, when Bobby Zamora, the previous campaign's top scorer broke his leg in a tackle from Wolves' Karl Henry.

Adding Zamora's injury to one for playmaker Dembele and soon the goals dried up – and Fulham began tumbling down the league. They only spent the briefest of spells in the bottom three, during the Christmas period, but many wondered whether they would be caught up in a relegation battle in the second half of the season.

Spirits were lifted with the prospect of a run in the FA Cup, a competition which Hughes had targeted and treated seriously, with strong line-ups from their first match, against League One Peterborough. An impressive 4-0 win over Tottenham followed, but their dreams of a Wembley final were ended by Bolton in the fifth round. In between the Tottenham and Bolton games, Fulham's league form had improved as they went on a run of just one loss in six matches.

Even so, safety was not secured until the end of April – and such was the league this term that Fulham continued on to make good on Hughes' pre-season claims that they did in fact have the personnel worthy of a top ten finish.

Three pros:
Salcido - slotted into Premier League life almost instantly, despite homesickness.
Dembele - creativity was key to many goals. But will he stay?
Brede Hangeland - unflappable defender kept the best in the league quiet.

Three cons:
Andy Johnson - yet to get back to top form following long lay-off.
Zamora - suffered broken leg with season barely underway.
Eddie Johnson - clearly not up to Premier League standard.

By the numbers:
0 - number of red cards received by Fulham players.
2 - most goals conceded in one away game by Fulham.
11 - 2011-12 will be Fulham's 11th consecutive Premier League season.
12 - number of league goals scored by Clint Dempsey.
14 - clean sheets in the league - five of which were 0-0 draws.

By our numbers (marks out of ten):
Manager's job: 8
Entertainment: 7
Team spirit: 8
Fans' satisfaction: 8
Overall campaign: 7.5

Hughes eyes Cottage DJ

Fulham are just one of several clubs reportedly interested in Blackpool striker DJ Campbell, who could be on the move this summer.
Cottagers boss Mark Hughes revealed on Sunday that he is planning to make changes to his squad ahead of next season as players such as Ghana international John Pantsil and Hungarian winger Zoltan Gera look set to depart.

"We are trying to freshen up the squad and the view is that we can look at other alternatives," he said.

However, Hughes is in the market for a new forward player and 29-year-old Campbell could be on his radar after Blackpool were relegated from the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Campbell, who has taken to top-flight football with 13 goals to his name during the past season, reportedly has a release clause in his contract which will allow him to move on for as little as £1.25million now Blackpool have been relegated. And, it seems this has alerted Fulham and Sunderland to his services as their boss Steve Bruce looks to be reunited with the player he signed from Brentford during his time in charge at Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Hughes has confirmed that he would like 32-year-old Gera to stay at Craven Cottage, despite his reluctance to sign a new deal.

Speaking after watching Gera receive a red card as goals from Steve Sidwell and Bobby Zamora were cancelled out by Arsenal duo Robin Van Persie and Theo Walcott in the 2-2 final day draw on Sunday, Hughes said: "Zolly may feel he will get more opportunities elsewhere, but ideally we would like him to stay.

"We would be very disappointed if his Fulham career ended on that note."

England Calling!

Fulham Football Club is delighted to confirm that both Bobby Zamora and David Stockdale have been called-up by Fabio Capello for England's forthcoming Euro 2012 Championship Qualifier against Switzerland. The match will be played at Wembley Stadium on the 4th June (KO 4:45pm).

Zamora received his first international call-up in August 2010 and earned his first cap at Wembley during England's 2-1 friendly win over Hungary.

Zamora's 2010/11 campaign was cruelly interrupted by injury in September and after a five month spell on the sidelines the striker returned to help fire Fulham to an eighth place finish in the Barclays Premier League.

Since his return to action Zamora has kept up his impressive strike rate for Fulham. Following last season's impressive 19 goal haul, the striker has added six goals to his tally this year in just 12 appearances, including the Club's final goal of the season against Arsenal on Sunday.

Goalkeeper Stockdale really came to the fore at the start of the 2010/11 campaign and produced a stunning display against Manchester United at the Cottage, which included a late penalty save, to help earn the Whites a 2-2 draw. His performances in August against Bolton, Manchester United, Port Vale and Blackpool earned the keeper the Club's official Player of the Month award.

Mark Schwarzer's participation in the 2011 Asian Cup handed Stockdale further game time at the start of the New Year, with the keeper playing six successive games as Fulham recorded an impressive run of four victories, one draw and one defeat, including a 4-0 rout over Spurs in the FA Cup.

Stockdale received his first England call-up on the 5th February ahead of England's international friendly against Denmark in Copenhagen on the 9th February and now returns to the international fold for England's forthcoming Euro 2012 Qualifier against Switzerland.

Fabio Capello's 26-man England squad:
Goalkeepers:

Scott Carson, Joe Hart, David Stockdale

Defenders:

Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Joleon Lescott, John Terry, Kyle Walker

Midfielders:

Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Stewart Downing, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Ashley Young

Strikers:

Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Bobby Zamora

Fabio Capello plucks David Stockdale off Fulham's bench for England• Ben Foster's absence restricts goalkeeping options

England's difficulty with goalkeepers has driven the manager, Fabio Capello, to name David Stockdale, a substitute for Fulham, in the party for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland at Wembley on 4 June. Joe Hart will start, with Scott Carson as back-up, but in the long term the manager has not ruled out recalling Birmingham City's Ben Foster, who has stood down from England duty at present, or Robert Green, the West Ham United player who has reservations about it.

It is not only goalkeepers who are uneasy. Jack Wilshere, at his own request and at the urging of the Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, has been spared duty for England at the European Under‑21 Championship in Denmark this summer. Instead, the 19-year-old will, at most, have just a part to play against Switzerland. He has made 31 starts for his club in the Premier League alone this season.

Andy Carroll, the Liverpool forward, has been left out. Knee problems have hindered him and he has been confined to two appearances since the middle of last month. It is too late for surprise or risk-taking by Capello. In early summer the aim for England is simply to complete their work for the season with a win.

The manager has therefore shown no real appetite for experiment. Kyle Walker, the uncapped right-back, has been included but he would probably have featured in the friendly with Ghana in March had he been fit. The 20-year-old, who went on loan to Aston Villa from Tottenham Hotspur in January, occupies a position for which the competition for places is not particularly intense.

Liverpool's Glen Johnson started against Ghana and the right-back is likely to start against Switzerland. There can be little interest in experimentation from Capello when his team leads Group G only on goal difference ahead of Montenegro. With nine goals from their four matches to date England's firepower has been significant.

In September, Switzerland themselves were defeated 3-1 in Basle. Wayne Rooney, who scored the opener then, is suspended for the return, so Bobby Zamora, whose England debut came as a substitute against Hungary at the start of the season, is one of the forwards in the party, along with Peter Crouch, Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe. Zamora scored for Fulham against Arsenal on Sunday and must have convinced Capello even if his club manager, Mark Hughes, doubts whether he has completely recovered from a broken leg.

All the same, it has not been Capello's purpose to take risks. The Tottenham centre-half Michael Dawson has been passed over despite there being 26 players in the squad. That reflects Rio Ferdinand's availability. The Manchester United centre-half had not been fit to play for England since turning out against France in the November friendly. His Old Trafford colleague Michael Carrick has also been recalled.

England squad Carson (West Bromwich), Hart (Man City), Stockdale (Fulham); Baines (Everton), Cahill (Bolton), Cole (Chelsea), Ferdinand (Man Utd), Jagielka (Everton), G Johnson (Liverpool), Lescott (Man City), Terry (Chelsea), Walker (Tottenham); Barry (Man City), Carrick (Man Utd), Downing (Aston Villa), A Johnson (Man City), Lampard (Chelsea), Milner (Man City), Parker (West Ham), Walcott, Wilshere (both Arsenal), A Young; Bent (both Aston Villa), Crouch, Defoe (both Tottenham), Zamora (Fulham).
