I'm trying to compile a list of sights in and around Craven Cottage -- places/streets/stores/pubs/newsagents/greens etc. the very nature of which when heard or seen in print will cause the reader/listener to think FULHAM FOOTBALL CLUB.

Can y'all get such a thing going for an old yank down on his luck?

If you like books than I recommend Hurlingham Books - really close to Putney Bridge station, and is on the way between the station and the club. Hundreds and hundreds of books stacked up in the window, is a familiar reassuring sight on walking to matches (sadly I come from Hammersmith way, so I miss out on this and the famous Bishops Park walk these days).

Walking through Bishops Park, on the path furthest from the river, is the remains of the moat that surrounded Fulham Palace. They are currently working to re-introduce the moat and it is hoped that just like the original, it will be fed from the Thames. Apparently it was taken out of service in the 1920' in an effort to save money by the then Bishop.

The walled garden in the Bishops Palace. Better in the summer though. :003:

And that church that starred in the Omen.

MJG

The Thames...with a grand old football ground on the banks of it, the university boat race taking place as they row by the Miller..sorry riverside stand.

The Doctor

The view along Finlay Street from Fulham Palace Road.  Whenever you get over here, have a look

I've a mate who emigrated to Aus a few years back and whenever he's back over he makes a point of taking in said view

thanks guys and gals.  065.gif 065.gif 065.gif

and K'Cat, while the missus and I are both familiar with London, we're already planning to take in the stuff that changed after we left in 1992, which includes many things on your list. I hadn't realized how much had changed in London until I realized I was 2/3rds the way through the 2nd episode of Luther before I recognized something in London. It could have been filmed in Norwich for all I could recognize prior to that. Anyhow, those things on your list that are fairly new -- Globe Theater -- are in our plans.

More names please -- specifically of places very near the ground!

The river walk from the Crabtree pub direct to the ground.

The view of Craven Cottage from the other side of the river by the boat houses it is great in the winter for a night game with all the lights blazing, stiring stuff

HD you could take a ride on the London Duck (an amphibious landing craft from the Normandy Landings. It does the road bit, then suddenly goes out onto the Thames. It is a bit expensive but a pleasant experience. You can pick it up on the South Bank, near Waterloo Station. You will need to pre-book though.

How about a Fuller's brewery tour?

Another local thing is the image of Jerry Abershawe, who was, back in the 1790's our own local highwayman, there is a tribute to him at the top of Putney Hill at Tibbetts Corner. Couple of decent local pubs close by, The Green Man and The Telegraph. Having said that perhaps its better to read up on Mr Abershawe on Google, interesting read.

beauty one, Mr. Peabody. This is some great stuff.

Don't forget fish and chip shops...

Fishers. The best in town.

Not sure if it has re-opened yet following the fire a few months ago.

...The Telegraph is a decent pub for food and drink, rather up-market clientele these days, but it is a little better during the weekdays. Bobby Morre used to live just around the corner from there, and used to enjoy the odd sherbert in said hostelry

BTW, the official 'blurb' says it is only 5 minutes from Putney High Street - only if you have a car and the lights are all green, you would not want to walk it!

And this is how it got it's name (to help us defend ourselves from Bonaparte - alors)...

Actually, the nature reserve in Barnes - directly across the river from the cottage - is worth a stroll through. If you're into that sort of thing.

...the Fullers tour is great fun, of course the best bit is where you go to the tunnel that used to lead to the wharf on the Thames, full of memoribilia and a bar where you can try out the different brands, well worth a visit...
