It's either "over," meaning I have finished and am awaiting a reply, or "out" meaning I have finished and expect no reply.

It is one of those small, totally irrelevant details which let many a film about the military down (others being (in no particualr order) pretending T-34 tanks are Panzers, or somebody having a bazooka or equivalent long before they were developed, or films of the Battle of the Bulge with lots of Brits retreating amongst the Yanks, because we can't have it as just a US defeat, can we, or the latest crime in an otherwise very good film, a US P-51 Mustang fighter destroying a German warship with machine gun and cannon fire).
