Great Fulham Goals

#1 – Clint Dempsey V Juventus

There was no doubt that Clint's chip against Juventus would go down as one of Fulham's Greatest Goals, the only question was how highly would it rank?

It's no surprise that the goal is deemed by Fulham fans to be the best we've scored in 11 years of football. With hundreds of strikes to choose from, Dempsey's goal against the Italian giants topped the lot, and by a considerable margin too.

The goal in question was scored on the evening of March 18th 2010, when Fulham welcomed The Old Lady to the Cottage, hoping to overturn a 3-1 lead Juventus held after the first leg of our Europa League tie.

Things got off to an abysmal start when David Trezeguet scored for Juve with less than two minutes on the clock. Fulham were 4-1 down on aggregate against one of the tournament favourites but nevertheless, we refused to admit defeat.

Before long Bobby Zamora had levelled the score on the night, shrugging off former World Player of the Year Fabio Cannavaro with ease before slamming home inside the area.

Things soon got worse for Cannavaro when he was sent off after 27 minutes for bringing down Zoltan Gera when he was through on goal. We sensed that if we could nick another goal then the tie would be ours for the taking.

That goal came six minutes before half-time when Gera turned the ball home. Craven Cottage was rocking, as it had been throughout the European campaign, and there was a frenzy in the stands when Gera levelled the aggregate score from the penalty spot early in the second period following a handball by Diego.

Juventus were unable to cope with our attacking waves as we continued to bombard the 10 men, with Manager Roy Hodgson signalling his intent to win the tie in normal time when he replaced right-back Stephen Kelly with Dempsey on 70 minutes.

We were enjoying all the possession in the build-up to Dempsey's goal; patiently waiting for the opening as we exchanged pass after pass in Juve's half.

There didn't appear to be a huge threat to the goal in front of the Hammersmith End when Clint received Dickson Etuhu's pass with his back to goal, but as many defences have learnt the hard way, the Texan is very adept at creating a chance out of nothing.

He took two touches to move the ball to the right before dinking the most elegant of chips towards goal. For anyone in the stadium, the ball seemed to hang in the air for ages before dipping just inside the far post. Even when the net rippled there seemed to be a split second of silence, as if Fulham fans wanted to make certain what they had just witnessed was real.

The goalkeeper stood no chance, but that was not his fault. The perfection of the effort by Clint can never be underestimated. He knew exactly where the goal was – replays show that he didn't indulge in as much as a goalwards glance before he struck it – and he couldn't have executed it better.

The technique of the goal was sublime, but when you couple it with the drama of that night, and what it meant to everyone involved with Fulham Football Club, few would disagree that it deserves the tag of Fulham's Greatest Goal.

There was still time for Juventus to be reduced to nine men when Jonathan Zebina was sent off in stoppage time for kicking out at Damien Duff. It was a frustrating evening for the Italians, but one of glory and fame for the Whites as we advanced into the Quarter Finals after securing an aggregate score of 5-4.

It had to be did'nt it. Have to say I am hugely disappointed with the fitness levels of the crowd behind the goal. We were already jumping up and down in P2 as the ball left his boot.
No Saha and no McBride. The goal at Pompey was important sure enough but a great goal?

Technically brilliant, and one of the most important goals in our history...

The key to that goal is the fact that Dempsey, according to one of his national team coaches, "tries poo." You can't succeed if you're afraid to fail. Deuce is fearless and, if there's no better option, he'll take his shot.
