Senior Supporter

A real football man. He played for West Ham for sixteen years, and is fondly remembered in the Bournemouth area where I live, because he started his managerial career with the Cherries and got them promoted from the old fourth division.

RIP

In last Saturday's Guardian there was an obituary. Link to it is http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/sep/26/john-bond?INTCMP=SRCH
It was illustrated by an old photo taken at the Cottage of JB defending a Johnny Haynes shot in the late 50s.

I showed it to my 6 year old daughter the other day to illustrate how packed the Cottage was in those days, including near where we have our seats in the Johnny Haynes stand. I asked her if she recognised anything about the photo and, instead of saying 'it's Craven Cottage' she said - 'that's Johnny Haynes'. I was:
a) gob-smacked
b) pleased that my indoctrination is working
c) proud.

I'm taking her to her first away game on Sunday. Let's hope that doesn't put her off our great club.

Congratulations to you, Shredhead. A good Fulham education (not indoctrination, surely!) just indicates that parents can bring up their children the proper way these days.

The obituary for John Bond was also a very interesting read for us oldies.

.....and notice that old glue-pot pitch that characterised football until the high-tech approach to grass and pitch-laying of later years !

In fact the kind of surfaces upon which Johnny Haynes made his name!
