Non league opposition

We've faced a few non-league Clubs over the years. Some great memories. I just wondered what everyone's favourite non-league match was?

Kettering was a cracker in the FA Cup recently. And of course there was that defeat to Brentford Hayes FC. THe heroics of the keeper v Leigh RMI. That last minute defeat at Yeovil many moons ago.

My favourite? THe 2-2 draw at Ashford during the great flood of 94  yee-haw!.

Ashford FC Club records:

Record attendance at The Homelands: 3,363 v Fulham, FA Cup first round, 1994–95
English by birth, Fulham by the grace of God.

The Enclosurite

For me the Ashford Town game is the most significant game in the clubs recent history as a certain future manager became a legend that day and we all know what happened after that.  I personally see this game as the turning point in the clubs fortunes, we would not be where we are today without it.
¡COYW!

That was the first Fulham game I ever went to. Not the best of starts, but I was pleased for Hayes, as they were my local side at the time.

I remember walking out of the Ashford game when we were 2 down and got on the Bus to take us to the Car park.I went upstairs where i could see the game.It was a horrible wet day, but,as i sat there trying to get warm and dry,we were awarded a penalty.Up steps Mickey,One all. Then, moments later,Two each.I agree with the Enclosurite, that was when it all changed.

There used to be an old saying about us. Any true Fulham fan could tell you when he first saw a match, who the opposition were and how much we lost by.
I'm not sure you would qualify if you turned up rooting for the opposition, but never mind.

Ashford at home in the replay was a very entertaining affair, they just wouldn't roll over, would they? I remember we gave their players a very generous round of applause when we finally overcame them, after extra time, and they fully deserved it.
Kettering was good, a real ramshackle old ground (they've moved to Rushden and Diamonds' ground now), with one portaloo for a couple of thousand of us. I saw a couple of Fulham fans with blood on their faces, I think they had been fighting eachother, I never found out why, maybe they were both desperate for the toilet.
Any fool can criticise, condemn and complain, and most fools do.

Leigh RMI  at home.... what a goalkeeping display

. Leigh goalkeeper David Felgate, who was then 38 years old, received widespread plaudits for his sparkling performance in the Fulham match, which prompted then-Fulham boss Kevin Keegan to declare that Felgate's goalkeeping was "the best I've ever seen at any level.

The Kettering Away fixture was a cracking game...  but it did get abit punchy with the Kettering fans.  Leading to an escort out of the town about 7pm

I wouldn't say I was exactly rooting for the opposition. It was a rare opportunity to watch a game where my two local clubs (one league, one non-league) were playing each other. I'd have preferred Fulham to win, but I couldn't begrudge Hayes their one moment of fame.
